Title: Unibond 800 problem
Post by: Elison on September 06, 2017, 08:09:00 PM
Hi guys!
I bought a pint of unibond 800 a few months ago, and used it 2 or 3 times with no problem.
But the last time I planned to use, I open the bottle and all the glue got harder! Like a kind of wax.
I think 85% of the glue was lost and I do know why.
I heard once that it doesn't go very well with UV light, so, I left it in the box and inside a drawer.
Do you guys have some problem like this before?

I store mine in the fridge and have had it for a year with no problems. I buy 1/2 gallon jugs.

Yep, I no longer use it, but when I did, it turned hard after a few months.  I now use smooth on for all wood bows as well as wood/ fiberglass bows.  Sealed tight it will last for a long time.  I had a pint kit that had to be a couple of years old and was still fine.

I keep mine in the refer as well. So far so good. But I will be starting another bamboo flyrod soon. So see what happens when I need glue for glue up.
Another option is Nyatex an epoxy that was used making bows. The company is in MI and I suspect they supplied Bear Archery at one time.

The problem is that I lived in Brazil. So I did imported the Unibond, paid three or four times the original price because of the shipping plus tax and used only in 2 bows.  :(
Bad investment.

Elison, see if you can find Weldwood Plastic Resin. It is also a urea type wood glue but it is a powder that you mix with water. As long as the powder stays dry the shelf life is probably unlimited.
I've used the Weldwood on backed bows, hickory and bamboo and on a tri-lam I made years ago and with good results with all. I found about Weldwood Plastic Resin from a guy in Italy years ago and all he built was backed and multi-lam bows.
...and it's cheap. I think I paid about $5.00 for a 1# bucket.

I had the same thing happen on my last pint of Unibond.  2 bows (2 or 3 months) and it went bad and it was stored inside.
That Weldwood looks promising.  I wonder if it works on exotics like ipe.

Looks really promising.

My last few pints Unibond set up after a couple of months, I gave up on it and switched to Smooth On. I kept the Unibond on my bench for a couple of weeks and them put it in the frig, it set up anyway.

Roy has a great place to buy Unibond at a price that is a fraction of what we paid at Nelson or other places.

I'm thinking where I buy it, they have a greater turnover, thus it must be fresher glue as I have never had a problem with it setting up, even after a year.

I ordered 1 lb. of the Weldwood resin from Amazon for under 9 bucks delivered to my door in 2 days . That's half the price that I pay for just the shipping on one pint of Unibond.

I'll give it a try and report back my findings.

Any idea how the Weldwood would work on a glass bow?

Thanks for the heads up on where to buy from Roy, I always bought from nelsons. Just gave vacuum systems a try seems like a good deal.

Yes it's a great price. Store it in a fridge and it will last a year. I use a half gallon a year.

I bought mine at the same place as Roy, still good after more than a year in the fridge.   :)

Roy, how could you have any room left in the fridge for glue!   :)
