Found an aluminum riser template for a wave riser a good bud gave me, and decided to build myself a bow with it.
Here are some pics to start this show, will try to take more as I build the bow.

And with a junk set of limbs to see how profile will be...

There is the other part of the template to mark the wave to the left of bow.....
I'm liking the looks of it so far.
-
I'm liking it too
-
It's ok.
-
I like it!!
Just hope you fixed those gaps before you glued the riser together! :biglaugh:
-
HA! Check it out, that's the sister, I haven't fitted it yet.... :D
-
So your makin yourself TWO new hunting bows
-
Well, if you finish it and don't like it, I suppose I could take it off your hands for ya.
Looks good so far!
-
Looks good so far! Maybe it will still be around in Sept. and I can shoot it a little. :)

Hahahah.... I didn't notice that part!
-
The one I glued up fit great with no extra sanding. The other one might be better if I slid it a little so the ends are even.
I looked at my edge sander a bit for a profile sander tonite. Got an idea or 2 goin....
I guess I'll have to build 2 :( , hate to throw away the other riser.... :biglaugh:
-
That looks real good.
Wish I have a spare set of limbs laying around.
-
The spare limbs are junk, they are where I learned to not crank the hold downs on the side of form tight against the bow limbs...... :p
-
Looks like zebra wood and what else?
-
Looks good, you could build one RH and one LH and I could shoot the lefty in Sept!!! LOL
-
Zebra and jatoba ( Brazilian cherry)
Left handed just don't seem right ( LOL) , I've built about three of em and was scared to death I'd cut the shelf on the wrong (right) side .

I've made myself a left handed bow once. And I shoot right handed. LOL
-
I made a lefty by accident once. Their wa s a lefty needing a bow so it worked out.
-
Here's my dilemma, do I use all zebra veneers or put this little pc of figured cherry on one side of limbs? Only enough cherry for one bow or one side of two.
Just glued up the sister riser...
Or one bow zebra and one cherry? :banghead:
-
Or cherry/zebra spliced?
-
Can't, the cherry is kind of bowed and twisted, that why it was in the scrap barrel.....
-
Do a double splice and just use a small piece of cherry in the middle.
Or just use black glass and camo paint
-
Now yer talkin!!
-
Yep need another hunting bow. :bigsmyl:
-
Put the Cherry on the deer side and the zebra on your side :)
-
Man I've messed wif some twisted cherry before..
-

I was going to say the opposite! Have the zebrawood add the "camo" effect while you get to stare at the beautiful figured cherry while you wait for that 14 pointer to stroll by.
-
LOL, all good ideas for sure. But I just remembered some Tamo Ash I have squirrelled away.
I never have a definite plan. Working on my TD form today and then we will be on to gluing up limbs. Thought about adding some reflex to it but it's fast enough and has a nice braced and full draw profile, so not today!
-
Guess I gotta come out there and help out the ole timer....
Scares me when some ole guy says I just remembered
.
-
LOL...
But I can relate to that.
Especially knowing ole Maxi Boy from down under.
-
Kenny, leave that scrap barrel alone!!! I'll be there in Sept! Lol
-
??????? Maxi Boy????????
-
Mad max from Mississippi.
-
That's only "down under" to a pennsyltuckian. :)
-
Here is what I've settled on, sister risers....
And the Tamo Ash veneers with amber boo cores and a jatoba wedge
(http://i.imgur.com/iwtzCJh.jpg)
Hoping for around 50#@28" with a recurvish grip.
Have an ILF riser I may sorta copy a bit from....
Got first limb glued up today before I went and helped another bud set trusses on a building he is putting up.
-
Man those woods sure look nice! Reckon it will be a great looking bow!
-
That's going to look sharp.
-
That will be very nice!
-
That Tamo Ash is beautiful!
-
Awfully fancy for a hunting bow.
-
Yup. If they don't shoot well, just fancy em up they say.. :)
-
Yup, that's why I'm so fancy lookin cause I don't shoot good. :D
-
I'm gonna need taller boots if I keep hanging around here!!!
-
I just ordered a pair of chest waders.. :)

A little update, it takes almost twice as long to build 2 as one... LOL
These are fresh off the rasp, so don't mind the tool marks....

I like the extra I put on left side of grip, this bow is fairly narrow, 1.450" but not sure what to do with the thumbrest.
I wanted a flatter spot where the palm meets the bow, I have an ILF riser that feels great there. It just looks too fat from the belly side , guess you can't have it all.. :)
Any input welcomed.....
-
Gonna have to be honest :scared:
I actually like less material in that area.
And I'm not sure about the grey actionwood. But then again.....I can't think of what I would use instead. Lol.
-
looking good kenny

That's what I like is honest answers!
I don't like the look of the fat grip, but man I like the way it is shootin for me. About to get arrows tuned in and even not having shot much this summer, it is working well for me. Had a bowyer explain the flat spot on the grip, it doesn't torque as easy. Time will tell.
Can you really see the actionwood( in the accent stripe)? That is phenolic on grip and thumbrest....
Thanks Mark!
-
Mentioned before I am not a big fan of 3 piece longbows but got to say Kenny this one floats my boat. :clapper:
-

Nope. Lol
Guess I should zoom in a little more on the ol phone. Thought the grip and thumb were awood.
-
Hey Kenny I like to taper the belly side fairly narrow. It gives the meat of the hand a place to go improving the palm swell. I don't really round it to give the flat spot you mentioned. When the bow is drawn it sets right in the hand. The bows are 1.4375 wide for reference. Not the best pics but thought I'd share.

Thanks Mike! I usually do pretty similar to yours(not that good) but the ILF riser feels so good in hand I'm trying to copy it somewhat. Got to get my brother to shoot it and see what he thinks.
Still much wood removal to go.....
-
Brother has both bows this weekend, he is in love with them!
He said no difference in shootability in the pair, so they will get rounded over a bit more, but still leave the flattish spot on belly of grip. Hard to explain, but I think I can get it done.....
Also will narrow riser up below grip, kind of like Mike's bow in pic above.
-
Flat, but rounded.
Makes perfect sense
-
I knew you could see it! :D
I hear voices too.....
-
If you look at Mike's, it appears from this angle to be kind of flat below center of grip, that is what I'm shooting for, told bro I'm in no hurry. You can always take more off, but you can't put it back on....
-
Kenny, could you use the scrap from the sight window cutout to build up the left side of the grip? It looks like the trim line could match up OK.
-
Got sis number 2 done, number 1 had some health issues...
Will have her done by next weekend I hope, then some family pics together.
This one is mine, bro liked the big grip on the other riser better...

-
Looking good Kenny!
-
Nice bow there Kenny. Well done.
-
:clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
Looks great Kenny!!
-
Thanks guys!
Brad, its quick enough, but it doesn't match the pro mod.
On the other hand, I shoot it much better!! Well mannered, which kind of surprised me with the limbs set forward....
-
The 2nd finish I tried was much flatter no glare, wonder if that means less water resistant??? LOL
Johns is 49 # @ 27 and mine is 49# @ 28 so we should be able to trade arrows if needed on a hunt.....
