Title: spliced veneers
Post by: Crooked Stic on May 24, 2017, 07:58:00 PM
Tried some with maple and walnut. Resawed and ground nicely down to .030. Did not take flexing at all. I realize once they are glued up in a limb they will be fine. But very fragile. Any thoughts ? used smooth on and 30% cut.

Bummer
I think maybe
if you would have put some stripes in there it would help.
spread the load out?
I have done 45* cut with 3 stripes.

Here's my theory.  And take it for the 2 cents it's worth.
You are basically inducing twist in the veneers at the splice. Although both are good bow woods, they come from opposite ends of the flexibility range.
Once encased in glass it would probably not be noticed. But a V splice would eliminate the twist.
The better question is.....which wood goes to the tips?  Walnut to keep them lighter or maple to keep them stiffer?

Brad brings up a good point on inducing twist . That can be countered by making sure the back and belly lams are opposite , forming an x with the splices. I would lengthen the splice. I have a long lazy s splice I've used, they are pretty strong that way .

Yeah a flatter angle would give more surface.

Yes make the splice longer.
how did you prep the glued surfaces of the splice?

I think you need to lengthen the splice for sure. Thinner the veneer the better too. Good start Mike!!

Got some curing now with longer splice and a different glue.

These seem to be a lot better.

Looks good Mike, I measured mine and it is 4" on the diagonal on a 1.5" wide limb

Thanks. Here is a shot of the finished riser. Trying a different finish. I will see how it holds up and talk about it later. Most satins look more glossy to me and this one actually looks satin.
