Title: #2(Clays bow) finished!!
Post by: Bvas on April 08, 2017, 07:16:00 PM
Finally finished up the bow for my boy!!!
60" N/N and 44#@28". I wasn't sure how this one was gonna turn out, as it has quite a bit of reflex, but I think it will be fine.
He's happy. And that's the most important part

Nice bend, I like a smooth arc to the limbs . You got it goin on, should be a sweet shooter.

Very nice looking bow Bvas!

I see you glued a full length glass on the belly  and built the handle on top of it. Is it any easier to do it like that instead of a full size riser block (like Kenny's build)?

How long is the power-lam (the thick piece sandwiched between the glass)?

How thick is it?

Did you make it flat on the belly side or

did you leave a shallow radius?

How long is the handle build up (I guess it's shorter then the power-lam)?

What stack did you use to get to this draw weight?

Sorry for all the questions, it just look so damn cool and a hack of a lot easier... I want to try it myself.

Arachnid, let me see if I can answer all those questions.
This method was no easier. Some aspects were even a little trickier.
The thick piece(maple), for the most part is the riser. It is 18" long and about 1" thick. There is a powerlam. But you can't really see it. The belly glass is double stacked for 20".  The bocote is more or less just to form the grip and add some strength to the riser.
The maple has radius for about the first 3" to get the fades correct thickness then runs flat thru the center.
The handle build up is about 12" so that it does not interfere with the working fades.
Stack is .320 with .003 total taper.
I think that was everything  ;)

I don't think I do the overlays any different then anyone else. I will say though that the maple is pretty thick(about .180) and the bocote is really thin(about .020).  And I pre tapered the ends of  maple before glueing on.

Thanks Bvas.
I just didn`t understand where did you put the power lam and how long is it.
Plus, what did you mean by "The belly glass is double stacked for 20"." Did you pur 2 layers of glass over the whole belly?

The power lam is a 20" piece of glass. It is located directly under the full length belly glass.

Thanks guys!!! I really enjoyed building this one, especially with Clay helping me out where he could.
I hope he enjoys it. It's his first trad bow.

It's very accurate but just a little "twangy". Gonna have to spend a little time playing with the brace height and the fur balls.

Unlike Kenny, we prefer to keep a little hair on the beaver.    :biglaugh:
