Title: Wheel paint test.(update)
Post by: Buemaker on March 25, 2017, 10:08:00 AM
A while ago Ben told us about this wheel paint, so I wanted to give it a try. I could not get the same brand he used, but found another. Yesterday I sprayed a strip of sanded aboo a couple of times and an hour later It was hard and I flexed it severly without any cracking. Today I hit it with a hammer to see If the finish would crack in the dents, but it did not, se picture.
Today I wanted to see if this stuff would adhere to bowglass so after sanding with 180 grit I sprayed the glass strip 5 times within two hours, it dries fast. The last coat I sprayed lightly from a bit larger distance to get a bit of textured finish, se pics.
After a couple of days I will put the glass strip in the freezer and bend it cold to see If it can take that. This looks very promising, but how it will keep after a year, well who knows.
I am posting a few pics.

I will keep you posted how it work out, now just a few hours after spraying it is hard and can be flexed severly. If you enlarge the pics you should see the texture clearly.

Very cool Bue and man I hope it passes the cold test

After 12 hours in the freezer at -18 Celsius 0 Fahrenheit I flexed both the bamboo and glassfiber strip severly and repeatedly. Nothing happened to the wheel finish, no cracking. So I guess it is okay, as Roy would say.
Let us hope it stays that way.

Good to hear bue.

I used the wheel finish on my bow.  Seams like a very hard finish. But I'm not taking any rocks or hammers to it.

I can't believe that you guys paint your bows with high tech paint. 1 million Indians just rolled over in their graves...  What ever happened to bear or beaver fat?   :)

Roy I can't get near them to kill one due to the smell of my bow. $8.95 for the VHT I think

The bald ones have to get fat to stay warm in winter.    ;)

Do you know if it can be sprayed over wipe on poly and what preparations do you have to do?
Title: Re: Wheel paint test.(update)
Post by: BenBow on April 01, 2017, 03:36:00 PM
Yes but the poly is the weak link as far as adhesion but you should sand it with 220 first to help adhesion benbow ie wTk

I just sprayed a glass bow with  VHT. I am very impressed with the results . I have always used Fullerplast, the VHT was a lot  easier operation. I'm hooked no cleaning spray gun or messing with a compressor!

What I am seeing with this stuff is it seems to chip very easy.

Chips, interesting, I've not seen that problem on anything I've used it on but I'll keep watching.

Mike, VHT or Duplicolor wheel finish?

The latter chipped on my bow, but thought it was because I sprayed over Automotive clearcoat

I have used both brands and haven't had any chipping problems.

Thanks I'll keep watching and do some more tests. Also what happened to cause the chipping?

Not sure what happened. But I can now catch a fingernail on it and it scrapes right off

Has anyone tried the rustolium wheel paint? i cant seem to find the vht around here.  Can it be used to fill the grain?

I've only seen the VHT and Duplicolor.  They seem to be exactly the same stuff.  Probably come off the same line and packaged for different resellers.  Maybe the Rust-Oleum is the same also.

The giveaway Is the exact word for word instructions on the cans.

So far I've used it on some oak chairs with good results and no chipping.

Last week I used it on these arrows and so far no problems.  The arrows were done with water based acrylics on bare wood, 320 sanded and sprayed.

Beautiful arrows!  I'll have to give that a shot the next time I finish some arrows (along with using it to finish a bow).

So far the chipping on my last years hunting bow seems to be from lack of prep when I sprayed over the gloss clearcoat. The latest bow I sprayed with it seems good.

So, just to be sure on the order of operations you uses, you painted the shafts first, then sanded with 320 grit, then applied the wheel paint?

Yes, the acrylic is wiped on except the silver accent rings.  It penetrates the bare wood.  My usual process is three or four coats of wipe on water based poly but decided to experiment with the wheel coating and am very happy with it.

I have a bow here that I used the VHT on and it took a bounce on the concrete floor.  :knothead:  Anyhow I had to sand it back down. The stuff is a real pain to get off. I had to end up using a stripper to loosen it up. It just gets too hard for my liking.

This vht is too high tech for me. Whatever happened to bear fat, possum fat, or good ole Beaver grease?
Title: Re: Wheel paint test.(update)
Post by: Bvas on May 19, 2017, 07:06:00 PM
I was gonna try using possum fat to finish a bow.
But man that possum got ticked when I tried squeezing it out of him.

That sucks Mike it sure is hard.  But it's not as bad as trying to suck fat from a possum.

Was wondering how the vht is holding up after being on a bow for awhile?       Any pros, cons?
Any  crackling, peeling ,etc???
And how many  coats are you using???  :dunno:

Mine has been on for almost six months. Have shot the bow quite a bit and carried it during turkey season. No cracking or peeling. Did acquire three or four small chips on the sharper corners of the riser.
This is mostly my fault, as I'm def not the most gentle with my equipment.
