Title: Help with an occasional problem
Post by: Sharp Shooter on March 06, 2017, 10:13:00 PM
Hello guys it's been a while since I've been on. Sometimes, not often, I'll have a set of limbs that turn out flimsy. Most of the time it's when I'm trying to build a light poundage bow. I build 3 piece take-down recurves. My risers are 15" and I only build a 60, 62 and 64" bow. The limbs are 29.5 on a 64" bow. I've been using an 8.25" wedges. Most of the time I use bamboo for my cores. Most of my limb will have clear glass over 2 veneers and 1 core. A .001 taper, no parrallel. Do any of you ever have this problem. When strung I can colaspe the limbs to the string with 2 fingers and it's a 50# bow. I've bee eliminating the parrallel to get the stack thin enought. Do you think that the wedges are to short?

Yes
I make Static recurves with a good bit of reflex sometimes one limb want to bend a lot and the other not so much at brace.
You just have to tiller it out.
Mine were 15" riser and 64" so I know what you are saying.
I make 1 piece bows now, and I have to make sure the lams and power lams are centered on the form.
good luck

I appreciate your comment Max. But my problem is after tiller is finished. Each limb bending the same.

Whippy tips is usually from to much taper rate, but that's hard to figure with only one .001 taper. Like Max said , post some pics. braced and unbraced.

I think on the light weight bows , the whole limb is kind of whippey and shows up much easier than on a stiffer bow.

Being light weight and the more taper rate will cause it. A buddy's bow was like that but it shot fine.

Kennym is a little whippey too..    :)

Tony, after re reading, you say it is a 50# bow so not real light weight. So the taper or the limb profile might be the culprit. Seems like some of the old recurves only tapered the sides of limbs about 8" at most.

You could drop the taper completely and make a parallel limb, and side taper less of it to see what it does.

Or maybe a long thin tip wedge to make the midlimb where its wider do more work.

This is from a mostly D/R longbow guy so only worth .01     :p
