Post pics and updates. Ask question and fish for what folks like. Don't post who you are building for.
Also let me know if you have built for the person in the past I will swap you out.
Let me know before you ship if it is to a new person. Unless you know they have shipped already.
Have fun let the fun begin.
-
I have a name... he he he.
-
Time for some fun to start!
Quick poll to see if my guy replies. Anyone have any objections if I make an English war bow? I'm going to be using persimmon to make an English long bow. But my staves are long enough at ~83" that I should be able to push to some pretty good weight if the wood will let me. I feel this should be a good design for such a hard compression strong wood. Plus I've been on a kick of wanting to make war bows lately.
So I'll make either a 100# warbow or an ELB of my guys preferred weight.
Kyle
-
My heaviest bow is #60.
After about 5 dozen arrows, I'd done.
The thought of pulling #100 is kinda scary.
The thing about war bows is that they were salvo weapons. A thousand archers could put 12,000 arrows a minute into the air. Accuracy was not an issue.
A completely different game to what I think most archers are doing these days.
-
Gueezz I think that would break my arms
-
Started playing with some spliced lams.
Black Walnut spliced to the paduk, with rock maple and african ebony then rock maple again in the splice as a detail.
Thoughts?

-
I love reading the bow swap threads. It's awesome to see what you guys can come up with!
-
Krasus if you make the splice more angled it makes the lams a good bit stronger and less 'temprimental' when plastered with epoxy at glue-up! Good combo though I've used it myself a few times.
-
I've had horrible luck using paduk in limbs. It must have a lot of oil in it that causes the glue joint to seperate. Be careful!
-
Having some shoulder issues lately, 100# is way too much bow for me.
Krasus, I like the wood combo, they look good together.
-
I usually shoot 150#... its not easy being me. lol
-
I'd have to cut 100#er in half to be able to pull it.
-
Thanks for the input about increasing the length of the taper on the limb splice Rob, and Galen thanks for the heads up on the oil in the paduk. Much appreciated!

I couldn't handle a war bow.
-
It sounds like so far it's unanimous, making the warbow is a no go. But it'll probably be a couple weeks until I get started. I've got one more bow to get done first. Though I may go ahead and rough it out when the other bow is on the form cooling from a heat treat.
Krasus- that's gonna look real neat with it spliced like that.

-
Going to try a hickory backed tri-lam for my trade bow. Got the hickory cut, core lams of hackberry tapered, and the osage belly lams cut. Hope to have it glued up in the next week or so. My smooth on supply is getting low, might need to order more before I can get started. Also need to splice my lams and get a handle block cut out.
-
Well sounds like some very nice bow in the wood works.
Dan I bet that combo will turnout one of the best bows ever. Osage belly, hackberry is so light and makes a good bow in its owe right. Then adds some hickory. I bet you get a narrow and light son of a bow.
-
Kelly, we shall see. I plan to do a light heat treat to the hackberry lams to help with the performance.
I reworked my form to do a straight limbed bow, with 2-3" of reflex in the outer half of the limbs.
-
well I got started on my guys bow today.
im going to have some spare time for the next couple of weeks, so my guy may get an early package in the mail.
-
This afternoon I got my bow roughed out and 90% floor tillered. I just gotta get the middle 12" moving a bit more to be happy. I'm guessing it's bending in the 80# realm right now. I'm gonna leave it in the house until this weekend to dry a bit more then I'll long string it and get it a bit closer to draw weight. I've never worked persimmon and don't know how well it'll take to a D belly. So I want it close to the full drae before I start pulling it from a full brace. I'll get it about 6" shy of weight on the long string so I have room to get it tracking right and not turn itself inside out and minimize the stress.

So quick question everyone regarding shipping and duties. What's specific to your country regarding receiving a package? Anything to know regarding value of said item? That way the recipient dosent have to pay dues to get thier bow.
I know in canada I've never had to pay to receive a bow but not sure if that's cause the shipper said it was a gift..or had a low value attached to it. When I ship to the USA I usually just go over the boarder and mail it domestic.
-
Any info on shipping rules & regs could be useful.
I've had nightmares in the past, shipping stuff.
Shipped a bunch of personal stuff from UK to Canada last year.
3 day service turned into 3 months of battling with shipping company and customs, due to the shipper messing up the paperwork.
I'm a big fan of smooth!
-
i know in canda- anything valued at over 20$ stands the chance of being opened and examined- and relevant duties applied.
in theory you can ship between us and canada- using a nafta certificate- makes it duty free' irrespective of value- we do it all the time for our products.
-
Some idiot decided that wood turning chisels constituted weapons!
I packed everything in front of them and asked if they thought anything in there could cause a problem.
They said everything was OK.
Then all hell broke loose.
Given the 5 hour time difference and dealing with customer service by phone, I was starting to lose my mind!
-
Canada, Germany, Australia, South Africa, never had a problem shipping other than if damage or disappearance there is no recourse. You are out the item with no cost recovery.

Still thinking about my victim, er, recipient. Not quite sure what to build. Guess I'll have to go trolling to see what pops up.
-
Got mine on the go.
I'm just going to build the best I can based on what I've done so far. Something I'd be happy with, and hope it doesn't disappoint.
-
Gonna start grinding my lams tonight. Hickery lams with a tiger wood veneer under clear glass. Not sure about riser yet but it's gonna be a hill style so i can figure that out later
-
I've got a start, but it'll be a lil while before I can finish. It all depends on how my eye heals up and when the doctor old me to lift more than a couple pounds. I've been okayed to move around and go for walks, though that doesn't work with a broken ankle. But I'm guessing it'll be a month or so until I can. But then I'll have another surgery and that'll reset for a bit.
But I've got the persimmon bow shaped out and almost floor tillered. I'm thinking about going a more primal knock design with the tips tapered and a bundle of thread built up to hold the string. And I might file a slight groove about the thread for a little assistance. The string design will be an idea I got from a warbow forum. One loop is a rat tail to adjustability and self tightening. The other will have a small loop where the string passes through itself to form another self tightening loop before the rat tail is hooked on. This makes for a string that tightens down and needs almost no knock to hold it in place but is still easily loosened on lighter bows. I tried ot on the last warbow attempt that was 100# at 25" when it went and it was easily loosened. I can shift gongs if there are any objections to these plans. I figured id might as well show a couple different ways of doing things to spread some ideas.

Had a set back on mine. While sanding my hickory backing strip to final thickness at a friends, his sandpaper on the roll left go and pretty much destroyed my backing strip. Need to start over on the backing strip. I thought I'd be tillering mine by now.

Tigerwood veneers with edge grain hickery core. Wood on the left is lace wood that I'm gonna use in the handle riser

Finally got a new backing strip cut and prepped, and glued the bow up today. Hope to get it unclamped and cleaned up tomorrow. Will try to get a pic up when I get that far.
-
Look's good krasus
worked on mine some this weekend
-
Worked a little bit this weekend. I am working on a new form for a recurve. I built the original form for my first recurve last summer and decided to tweak it a little bit before I make another. I guess I am using my victim as a "guinea pig". I am going to have to just guess on stack thickness for making weight.
I was also thinking it might be a good idea to say if we shoot 3 under or split. I don't think that was in the original sign up. If my guy sees this, I shoot 3 under.
Mitch
-
Re sawed the veneers today and sanded them down some.
I'm going to wait till close to glueup to sand them to .030.
-
Shaping my riser and should hopefully be glued up this weekend.
-
Out of the oven, limbs shaped, weight came in perfect.

Max, that's going to be a real beauty.
I'm going to plan B, my plan A just popped a big split on my hickory backing strip, about 8" from the tip. Had it almost to my recipient's draw length when it popped. Plan B will be an osage bend through the handle bow.
-
Maxi-son, those are real sweet....

How is everybody coming along?
-
I havnt been able to make any progress since the trade started and got the persimmon Stave roughed out. In about a month or so, I should be able to start working on bows again. I've been layed up with a broken tallus and punctured eye. I should be allowed to start placing my weight on my foot again in a few more weeks, and after the next eye surgery heals, I should be able to start lifting more and excerting more efforts to stuff., though I still won't have my full vision back yet. But the goal is an ELB design, if I can remember correctly 78" long. I plan to make pointed tips with built up silk thread wrap nocks, using tightening loops on both ends of the string. I tried that string type on a 100# Black Cherry EWB, and I liked it, though the cherry didn't too much. I was able to utilize very shallow single side nocks without the string slipping off. I'll make a black locust reflex deflex as a back up if I'm not excited with how this one turns out. I need to figure out how to post pictures from my phone, the persimmon has a near color to the wood. Sort of a lavender gray.
Kyle
-
Hope the recovery is quick and complete.
-
Get well
Sounds like a cool bow
-
This is all making me wish I'd jumped in :(
-
I got my plan B bow tillered to my recipient's draw length. Till I get it sanded out will probably come in slightly under or right on the low end of the desired weight. If it's too low I'll pike it a little. Will try to get some pics up with my phone, the camera isn't working too well anymore. Hope to get it all prettied up by the end of the week, if all goes well.
-
I haven't had time to do much work on anything yet, I got the woods sorted out and dimensioned but that is it so far.
-
Just cut my grip and sight window. Tips all shaped and finished. Now to just finish the handle shaping.
Does my victim care if the poundage is slightly under? (2 to 3 lbs). It's bang on now. But I'll lose some at final sanding.
-
For whoever a got me, I'm not picky about the poundage. if it comes in a little light, I'll be just as happy with it. Well tillered beats out a litle higher poundage.
Kyle
-
Looking good.
Kyle get better we don't need you getting splinters in your good eye just yet.
-
A little light on poundage is fine with me, if it is coming my way.
-
My plan B bow came in almost 5lbs under the low end of my recipient's desired range. I shortened each limb by 1" and checked the tiller. My pull rope was pulling straight down the line and all looked good until, POP! It cracked on the outside corner of one of the wiggles, about mid limb. Now It's on to plan "B" and a half I guess you would call it. I'm going to make a two piece out of it and make a new bottom limb. This thing is starting to be a pain in the butt. Maybe the third time will be the charm.
-
Mine came in 5# over, so I narrowed the limbs 3/16"
Awesome
I been wanting to narrow those limbs, should smoke the arrows.

Get well

Mine became a 2 piece today - not on purpose!
Oh well, it happens.
Had it to full draw a few times previously with no problem. Glad it broke on me and not my recipient!
Was 62# @ 28' last time I tested it.
I'd best get going on the next one.
-
Well if they aint breakin you aint makin.
-
I put some finish on my riser to find scratches.
I have a little tiller left to do.
-
I do most of my work at a local community centre wood shop.
When I'm tillering I always work as far away from everyone else as possible, for obvious reasons.
When this one cracked there were plenty of witnesses. One guy commented on how calm I was about it. That was number twelve. I have seven shooters, so I've had practice!

Got my 2 pc sleeve system made and fitted to the old upper limb and the new bottom limb. Have it tillered to 24" so far. I hope to make some progress tomorrow, got a few more inches to get to final draw length and hit my recipient's weight.
-
get er done
-
I'm finally free to walk and work again. So once all this rain around here slows down u can get back to it again. I have some alignment and heat treating to do before my stave is ready to start bending. There is about 3/4" of side bend over the length of the stave. Over the last couple months of aging and drying. The persimmon has darkened up a bit and gained some pigment lines under the grease I used to seal the back. Where it looks like the grease was uneven and left waves of the pigment.
Kyle

Glad to hear it Kyle

Finally I got the stuff together and can start with my bow for the swap.
Riser: Zircote
Lams: Actionboo core with Zircote/Olive veneers.

i always admire your work swissbow... sure this is going to be a shooter...

-
Cool bow Andy- someone is going to get shooter!
-
I'm loving the looks of everything!
I got mine from floor tillered to a 20" full brace draw before I decided i needed to correct some side bend with heat before moving on. I'm going to take it about 3" shy of full drae, then I'll sand it clean and shoot it in. It should get me dead on weight at length. I heard persimmon takes more set than you'd expect, I'm glad I left the stave extra long. It's 75" nock to nock and was taking about 1/2-5/8" temporary set after pulling to 20" on the tree. and is probably holding 1/4" set at the moment. I'm expecting to see about 1- 1.5" of set once it's shooting.
What's the best way to post pictures from a phone on here? I can start snapping some pictures as to coming around.

looking good fellas.
im going to apologize in advance to my guy... the glass is streaky. I really hate pulling back the tape and seeing that. I wish I had the time and funds to start again. On the bright side it did come in at weight, and its a very nice looking bow that shoots fast and quiet.
ill be shipping it out soon.
-
I got a few shots in on te bow at a slightly shorter than full draw. It still had some sideways twist that makes the strain g lay just outside the handle, which is why I didn't do a full draw yet. I'm working on correcting that and am still a few pounds over weight. So I've got room to work. But the persimmon surprised me. I was expecting it to be a bit thunky and sluggish due to how dense persimmon is and how long I made it. But it shot hard and felt like and ELB should. It is more of an elliptical tiller but you can feel the slightest bend in themiddle. As long as my guy doesn't mind a 77" bow, I think they will be happy with the feel and performance. So far it's at about 1" of set. It started with a little inder 1" of reflex and the tips are inline with te handle now. First time working with this wood and I'm happy with it. It seems to work well in an ELB design. Once I get. Aight up on everyone's projects I'll have to see what sort of weight it can handle.
Kyle
-
Finally got mine tillered and shooting. I'm going to put cherry bark backing on it as soon as I harvest some bark. It has been awhile since I did a cherry bark bow, hope my recipient likes it.
-
Harvested enough cherry bark to do 2 bows today. Can't remember how long I left it dry before, guess I'll give it a few days before backing the bow with it.
-
Mines done. Just waiting for my new hvlp gun to arrive to spray it
-
I haven't even seen it yet, but I'm already envious of whoever gets Dan's bow. I wish I had the talent and time to participate in this swap.
-
I'm looking for some opinions on how to finish out the ELB. I'm debating between traditional horn nock using either buffalo horn or deer antler. Or using overlays of the same material to save in length and tip weight. What do you all think? The bow is 75" between the nocks and about 77" overall. I plan to cut it down using a fiberglass takedown sleeve to help with both shipping and ease of transportation. What do you all think? I'm going to wait to put them on until I get it shot in so in sure I'm happy with it before it gets dolled up.
Kyle
-
Thanks for the nice comment Evan. It's not much to look at yet, just two yellow sticks with a metal handle. As soon as this cherry bark dries I'll get it all prettied up. Having a hard time shooting it in, since my recipient's draw length is longer than mine, (mine is 27" on a good day). Hope I don't loose an ear in the process, LOL.
-
Kyle, I think either the buffalo horn or the antler will look real nice with the persimmon, and not add much tip weight.
-
Mo coon
We have Persimmon down here in Mississippi.
Let's see some pictures?
-
I've ran into an issue posting pics at the moment. I tried getting the imgur app. But I need to update my phones software to get it. But I don't have enough internal memory to update it. So I need to hook up to a computer with iTunes to update. And my laptops internal wifi antenas is broke. So I've got to get either an external antenna or get ahold of a computer with iTunes on it that is hooked up to the Internet. Don't you just love technology. So I've got some ordering to do before I can get some pictures up.
But I've decided I'm going to go for an antler tip overlay and try to blend the wood into the antler tip so it'll flow smoothly. I shot it a bit yesterday with the still heavy tips. It actually surprised me. It took a total of 2" of set at this point and was pulling 60#, I expect it to settle in around 55# after sanding and some more shooting. And with a 600gr arrow I got about a 170 yard flight shot out of it. It was just one quick shot though. It has a little thump on release, but it's not bad. It should get better when cleans up. The tips are 1/2" and will be taken down to 5/16-3/8". This persimmon is dens enough that should be a good bit of mass removed.
Kyle
-
I'm debating making the ELB into a takedown with a fiberglass sleeve to help on both shipping cost and ease of transportation. Though the difference in shipping is only about $15 or so between full length and cut in half, which making the sleeve will close the gap. With the tips put on, it's running about 80" long and it does flex in the handle some. If I do, I'll make a 3" cut and make the sleeve 3.5" and have the arrow pass be ontop of the handle wrap. The glass will be sanded to have a smootg transition back into the wood so it can flex a bit. Otherwise it'll be the same, but without the extra bulk in the grip of the glass sleeve. The handle area is currently 1.25" wide by 1.125" deep. Ther sleeve will add about 1/4" to ye girth.
What do you all think?
Btw, persimmon is a beautiful wood with a few coats of tru oil, grey with streaks of greens and purple. I couldn't help myself and put a couple coats on to seal it before writing, and while debating the handle.
Thanks,
Kyle
-
Seems to me that it would be a lot of work and a possible weak link. I don't think I would do it for $15. Just my opinion though.
-
well looks like some progress going on.
-
I put the finish coat on yesterday
-
Finally got the cherry bark on mine, need to clean up the bark, apply some finish and a handle wrap yet. This thing is starting to feel like I have a job again, been at it a few hours almost every day since the beginning. I sure hope my recipient likes it.
-
I have the riser sanded. Got the limb tip over lays on. About ready for finish sanding and tiller check and shooting test. If all goes well then finish.
-
The draw weight is still a bit high but that's gonna leave me some room to adjust the tiller the way i want it.

I will be gone all week
April 30-----May 7
Don't ship
-
Nice looking bows Swissbow and MMax.
I am still here! Just not doing much bow building recently!
I have been playing around with a little bit with a couple of different recurve designs over the winter trying to find one I like. I am thinking my trade bow will be one of these designs. Not much time to work on trade bow since the first of the year - work (school) has kept me busy. May 17th is almost here and then I will have time to work on some bows. Ordered some glass and some glue from Kenny so I should be ready to go.
-
I'm a bit out of things at the moment.
Been dealing with a bunch of medical issues recently.
Haven't been near any bow work.
Waiting on test results at the moment.
Hoping to get back at it ASAP.
-
Hope all is well David, and you get back to it real soon.
-
Well looks like a few are close to completion. I have heard of another that is ready to ship.
-
Mines all shot in and ready to head out. It's only been pulled and shot to 27" where it shoots well. But after looking at it at full draw, it should be able to handle a couple more inches with no fuss. If the new owner should desire.
Are we able to ship any time, or do we need to wait for an ok? I can't remember.
Kyle
-
Kelly
I sent you a PM
I'am ready to ship
-
Pricing out my shipping costs.. :( :( 250 bucks! Cheapest
-
A few more coats of finish, write the specs on the bow, and twist up a new string and I'll be done and ready to ship also.
-

Folks I am going in for surgery Wednesday and head back to KS Thursday but plan on being back up and running on here by Monday but just in case you don't here from me over the weekend I was just letting you know.
Oh I and I have one bow as shipped. Watch your door steps and porches.
-
Mine shipped 3 day's ago
-
Wish you the best, Kelly.
-
You'd better recover quickly. We may get a little rambunctious.
But I'll be shipping after my next paycheck. I just gotta find a long skinny tube.

Looking forward to pictures. I've seen some of Al's bows - they look nice.

-
Ok, here we go. Been fighting with photobucket for awhile, finally!!!
The recurve is the bow I received from Al Dean.
The long bow is what I have built for my recipient. It is cherry bark backed osage two piece. 70" tip to tip.

Now that's what I'm talking about!!!!
A couple of beautiful bows right there.
Nice work gentlemen
-
I received a super nice bow this afternoon From Mark Daniels.
Mark, You Done Good....Really Good!
Figured I would post and let him know it has arrived. It is raining hard today and I am unable to shoot it. Hopefully it stops long enough to give it a test drive and take some pictures in good light tomorrow. If not, it will be a week before a do a follow up as I am out of town all next week.
-
Thank you Walt, It was my pleasure.
-
Awesome bows guys! I love this thread.
-
Nice looking bows!
-
Give some updates Guy's
:)
-
Finally back on the horse!
Glued up the limbs yesterday and got a couple of hours on it today.
Should get the riser sorted out and in place tomorrow.
Tillering next week.
If it goes to plan I'll be sad to see it go!
-
Okay, finally returned from my fly fishing trip and shot the bow this afternoon. It might be because I don’t usually shoot anything but selfbows, but this bow is fast! After some playing with the brace height it smoothed out and quieted down to a very low thump when shot, much better than most recurves I have shot. With all the fancy work and lines this bow has, it almost makes me feel guilty to continue with the bow I have started for the swap. This bow has great craftsmanship and is even a better shooter, I will let the pictures do most of the speaking.

sorry I have been off for a bit. I had surgery and I am working on the Army retirement so I will get caught up next weekend once I am back in KS.

Good deal Kelly
Get well first

I hope your healing well Kelly.
I'll be shipping off at the start of next week. I just have to trim the shopping pipe downs and get it stuffed in.
Kyle

About ready to ship. Need to make a new string yet. Here are a couple of pics. I apologize for not showing progress, but posting pics is too much of a pain so I do it sparingly!

Very nice looking bow and shooting Mitch!
-
Thanks guys, hope to ship tomorrow.
-
Just shipped this morning. Should be there in a couple of days - hope it makes it ok!
-
I hope mine arrives soon.
-
A quick update on the bow I am building. I have it roughed out and near floor tiller. That said, with processing the ST. Jude's payments and getting everything ready for the first Montana Selfbow Jamboree in less than two weeks, my bow probably will not ship until the middle of July.
-
A nice nimble recurve I received from Mitch Osborn today. Light and quick. What a nice surprise, thanks mitch. (http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg175/aldean_photos/100_1648_zpsgyrvgdxz.jpg) (http://s248.photobucket.com/user/aldean_photos/media/100_1648_zpsgyrvgdxz.jpg.html)
I'd do a few more photos if I could find my other camera. Does anybody know where I put it?
-
Your welcome Al. Man, it got there quick! I know it has a couple of flaws and is pretty simple! One of my first attempts at a recurve and my 4th glass bow. I learned a lot making it and look forward to making some more. I haven't seen your camera. ;)
-
That's a good looking bow.
I've got mine packaged up and ready to ship out in the morning. Someone will need to keep an eye out for an 80" white pipe.
Kyle
-
I will be watching my door step!
-
There should be a pipe on someone's doorstep. Tracking shows it delivered a couple hours ago.

Has anyone heard from Kelly lately? I sent him a message awhile back and haven't heard anything.
I received my bow today and was really bummed for a lot of reasons. One is because the reason I need to get ahold of Kelly is because I needed to drop out of the Swap this year due to some personal reasons and a surgery and the resulting recovery time afterward. So I have not been able to build in my bow for my recipient.
The other reason is because I received the boat today and was bummed out thinking that I would need to send it on. When I opened up the package it said there was a bamboo backed ipe bow inside, which is one that I have been wanting forever.
When I got the box off the porch it looked a little funny anyway so I took some pictures. But then when I opened it up I found to my disgust the bow was broken in two places on one limb. it looks like it got beat around in UPS. So now I'm not sure what to do. Do I send it back to the Bowyer, or what?

By the way Peter, the bow looked fantastic! I was really hoping to shoot it a couple of times before I sent it on. It looked like you did a really good job on it.
-
Man, that stinks!
Joe, hope your recovery goes well bud!
-
Don't pass on a broken bow. Lol that's why you can't ship in anything other then a pvc tube.
Sucks thought. Bow looked beautiful
-
Man - sorry to see that!

Received a good looking bow the other day unfortunately mine didn't survive shipping either

I'm sorry to see that it didn't make it to you safely. I sent you a PM. I want to make sure you get a good bow.
Did it break at the stringing groove on the upper nock? I hate to see it break, I really liked that bow and how it shot. And the persimmon made a pretty wood once polished up.
Kyle
-
sad to see such a good looking bow broken.
btw: i was pretty busy last couple weeks plus there was a long religious holiday in here. so i could not make some progress. hopefully next week i will make some progress. sorry to make my recipent wait little longer.
best.
-
Nice looking bows, sorry for the shipping damage.
-
Ya that sucks... Postal service does not give two @%#$s about your package. Gotta pack things so that the hulk cant break um.
-
Update on who still needs to ship?
-
I shipped...
-
I have a bow that I built to test out a form and did not intend to send for the swap, but since I can't get ahold of anyone I thought I'd send it out anyway. I need to make sure my recipient will be happy with it. It is about 5# less than their lower weight limit, but it is a very nice shooting bow. It's a 68" Hill style with almost 1" of backset built in.
Apparently I can't share photos through Photobucket, so go to this link for pictures. It should work.
https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1516194055121779&id=109720899102442
Please also comment if this would be an acceptable bow if it's 5# lighter than you're wanting.
-
5# wouldn't bother me in the least. I say send it. The way I see it, if I can shoot it, I'll play with it. If it's too heavy, I'll build up to it. In not drae weight particular.
Kyle
-
I'm just waiting on the go ahead from Kelly. Been done for several months.
-
5# less doesn't bother me at all!
-
5 lbs wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. As long as it's at least 45# min. That way I can legally kill a critter with it ;)
-
Folks Sorry for not checking in sooner. I am now going go back through and get caught up today and tomorrow.
-
Ok if a bow broke in shipping the bowyer who made it needs to make it right. I am caught up now. Again sorry for not getting on sooner. Moved back to KS settled and I have made a bit of headway on the honey due list. I will post a shipped and not shipped list later today or first thing in the AM.
-
im good with 5lbs dif.
-
here is the last update mates.
some cleaning, bolts and nuts, packaging etc are left.
as always, i do not mind +-5# or whatever.
best.
-
Looks good ink.
Finally got mine in the mail today. Someone should be receiving a bow in a few days.
-
Kelly good to see you back.
A quick update: My bow is bending good and tillered to 24". I plan on working on it tomorrow at the Traditional Bowhunter of Montana annual shoot and hope to ship it by the end of this month.
-
Oh ya,
I'm fed up with photobucket and third party hosting, therefore the number pictures I post here on Trad Gang will be limited, if any. At least until the format changes.
-
Thanks walt
-
I have been extremely absent from the board lately. My apologies. I have my bow ready to go except for the leather on the handle. It will ship next weekend at the latest.
-
Good deal - a couple more close to shipping!
-
Planning on shipping tomorrow. Hopefully no snags. She's got a ways to travel
-
mid of next week i will probably ship the bow.
Kelly: did my sender ship the bow? if so when? i may need yo chase the custom.
best.
-
haven't had to wait this long before... its killing me lol.
-
A quick update: My bow is fully tillered with almost 300 arrows through it. I think it will hold up for the recipient. Final touches and then spraying tomorrow, it should be in the mail by the end of the week.
-
Mine is shipping tomorrow or Tuesday.
-
Mine has shipped this past week. Unfortunately I had to message my recipient to get the skinny on customs since I haven't shipped overseas before. But with any luck it should arrive by the end of this week.
-
Sigh... still waiting...

I was finally able to put the finishing touches on this year's bow, . It goes out in the mail tomorrow.
This is my first attempt with Igmur, hopefully it works.

Nice selfbow Walt
There's a bow in a few of those pictures I remember.
-
Very nice looking bow Walt. Somebody is going to be happy in a few days.
-
Nice looking bow Walt, the buffalo tips really set it off.
-
My bow shows delivered yesterday. Hopefully my recipient is happy and we'll see pictures soon
-
I just got a white tube brought to the door a few minutes ago. Thanks a bunch Walt! I couldn't wait and already flung a dozen or so areows through it. It feels good and flings an arrow well. I can tell that I'm going to have to steal your handle design, it fits my hand PERFECTLY! I shoot an almost pure instinctive and snap shoot style, and I had no problems grouping it in a grapefruit at about 15 yards and on my Tshirt target at about 25. Great amount of character too, enough to make it unique without going over board. And not to worry with it, I have several years of playing with and building self bows under my belt, so it'll be treated right and shot plenty.
Thank you,
Kyle
-
Sounds like a winner Kyle - congrats. You will have to get some pics up!

That's probably a good idea.
-
I had to contact my recipient, received a tracking notice that the bow I shipped could not be delivered and was being returned to sender. When I finally got ahold of him it was too late, the last update from the postal service stated it was back in New York. Will have to re-ship I guess.
-
Hi all;
i have mailed to Kelly long ago but i did not get any response since then so i decided to write here too.
this is the mail that i have send:
-----------
i am really sorry to say this but the bow i am making for my recipient is giving me a real trouble. it seems like one limp is powerful than other although i made those limbs lams actually the same. (maybe the wood?)
i know it is a late notice but if my recipient allow me some more time would be great. if not, then if my bowyer did not send it yet you can forward his bow to my recipient.
if he already send, i do not know since sending his bow to my recipient will not be fair play.
you know, i have moved a capital city and living in apartment now. so i do not have much capability to create a proper workshop (well still working on it) plus last 2-3 weeks i was very busy with my health situation (keep back and forth to hospital) so i can not pour myself in to bow making.
if we can find a solution to this would be very nice.
waiting to hear from you mate.
-----------
basically, i am working on new limbs and and handle. here in Turkey, there is a long religious holiday and i had to take my family to somewhere to get relaxed. after that probably i will be re-construct the bow and see how it goes.
people in here...
if you think this (or any solution above) is not fair enough, please let me know.
note to my bowyer: if you did not send the bow yet, please keep it in your premises. worst case scenario will be sending the bow to my recipient.
sorry for troubling mates. i hope you can forgive me.
best and keep bowing :D

Seems like Kelly's disappeared....or lost in the woods...

From the sign up thread.....

Our vets who shipped on time last year will be Sunday, July 31st
-
i know the dead line...
so...
my bow maker please get in touch with me. i will give you my recipient details to you. so you can forward the bow to him.
thanks.
-
Ink - I did not post the reminder of the deadline for you specifically, but rather as a general reminder to all who have not shipped.
Since you have not heard from Kelly, perhaps you should PM your recipient directly and work out a solution.
-
hope I get a bow this year. sure would suck if I didn't. Hope everything is ok with Kelly???
-
I emailed him and messaged him and no answer. The swap is going to ****...
-
I just hope all is well with Kelly.
-
I sent on the bow that was sent to me as I have had some personal issues and couldn't complete in time. Tracking shows it has been delivered.
-
All the reasons above are why I stopped entering these bow swaps. Plus a couple other reasons.
-
Oh.. who got the bow I made for you robert?
-
No roy it just you are a grumpy ole man LOL.

OK I am tracking a lot of bows in the mail 6 or so.
shoot me and message if there i have made and error.

You can take me off the list.
-
Peter (DanishArcher) and I have been in contact. No worries on my end. If he gets another one made that's okay, if not I'm okay with that too. Sounds like he's busy trying to finish school and he's gonna try to get one out by the end of the year.
Also, Andy should've received his bow a week or so ago. I show it's been delivered on August 15th.
-
I have been in contact with Peter (Danish Archer) also. The bow that I made for him could not be delivered and came back to me, after being in Danish customs for quite awhile. I contacted him to get a better address and I re mailed it on Monday, should be there in a few days
-
Joe you're definitely gonna get a bow! No doubt about it! Things are getting better and school is working out so hopefully I can get in contact with my bow wood guy and work out a sweet deal on some new materials!
And Dan I've received the bow and send you a private message. but i can't say it enough... WOW that is a sweet looking bow can't wait to get some arrows through it!
-
Seeing as the deadline is in the rearview mirror just curious as to who is making the bow for me? Any teaser pics or info? :)

Good idea. Those still waiting for a bow could use a pm to update progress.
-
I just hope I get one lol.
-
If there's anyone that doesn't end up recieving anything that did shipped out. I don't mind making a couple extras that I can ship out to them. that way they Atleast get something. I'm tight on time right now due to working, BJJ, and some other projects . But I Can swing making and shipping out a couple of bows anyway. As long as you don't mind them being black locust self bows. I have lots of black locust and I can carve it out much quicker than I can hickory. It might be a week or two before I get started on them. So if we find out there are people that dissappeared, feel free to PM me and I can help out.
Kyle
-
Kyle,
If it ends up some ones does not get a bow we may take you up on your offer. I usually send pms out asking for help when it happens.
This year is the worse for deadline not being met by so many though.
Thanks,
Kelly
-
Generous offer Kyle...hopefully everyone can come through and we won't need others to step up. Any update Kelly?
-
hey there... after a long period remaking handle and refining the limbs i have completed the bow.

well, the point is communication... for me for example, i have tried to explain why i make the shipping late (this year was the first as far as i remember).
on the other hand, my first attend to this event, i had to wait for a year for my bow (well, there was some problems with various things which can happen) but for me that was not a bad thing. i trust this site, trust this the owners, and even more to people here. i feel like this community is kind of mixture of good heart people.
this is not particulary for you Roy. please do not get me wrong on this.
i just poured how i feel about being here...
best.
-
BTW: to my recipient:
i did not write the specs on the bow. but your bow is between #45-#50 @28.
i hope you like and use it.
finger cross to to have safe journey up to there...
best.
-
Hey Kelly, Can we get a list of shame on who hasn't shipped yet?
-
Ink, I did not post that towards you, sorry. Was just disgusted with the lack of communications here from those who have not shipped.
I have serious doubts that those who have not shipped yet, " 2 months late ", will never ship. The very least they could do would be update their progress thus far, as you have done!
But nothing from anyone as far as updates ??????????????
Kelly, list those guys out here who have not shipped.

I do the swap to give, not receive.
Those without a dog in the fight ought to keep their opinions to themselves lest they be thought an antagonist.

That is great John. But it is called a "bow swap" not a "bow give". I didn't get into the swap because I needed a bow. I got in for the fun of building a bow for someone else and getting to see the workmanship and style of a fellow bowyer. It is a learning process for me. I also got in understanding that I may not get a bow in the end, that is ok and I accepted that when I signed up.
I believe all the comments so far are just asking for a little communication. I don't think that is too much to ask.
As to the opinions..... this is a forum after all and most of the posts on this site deal with opinions. We are all members of the same group and are all free to give our opinion in a respectful way. Makes no difference what kind of dog you have. ;)
-
I'm with Mitch.
I didn't do the build and pay almost 300 buck to ship a bow to Europe (before the established bowyers deadline) to not receive anything.. the swap isn't a charity..
I'm really kinda disappointed that Kelly hasn't been more proactive and stay on top of things and let people know what's going on.
-
Cody if I was in your shoes, I'd be highly pissed off too. I've already been labeled an antagonist here, so I'll just keep my thoughts to myself.
-
Ya I am...
Don't worry about it Roy, we all know your a old craky bastard

Now,Now
us kid's need to play nice together.
Bummer on the bow swap!
-
Max, no one is trying to cause trouble. Just trying to bring to attention that some folks have not received a bow.
-
I'am with ya.
-
Well that Sucks... What was the dead line???
-
Yep, no trouble meant. Just respectful honesty.
-
Odds are in this bow swap you will not receive a bow, or receive one very late, or receive one not worth receiving. Anyone in this years swap should have been very well aware of this. It is just something to do for fun and a little practice. There is no glorious reward at the end.
-
What bothers me most about all of this, is nothing hardly at all from Kelly. And nothing from those who have not shipped.
Cody, I'm not in this bow swap. But give me your specs, and I will make you a trilam this winter.
-
You Da Man
-
I've done the swap every year from the beginning until this year. This year I've just been following along quietly. I understand John's post, but it is part of the bigger Bench Community, and I think people not directly in this year's swap still have an interest in seeing it turn out well and still feel the frustrations when things start to go off the rails. (That said, there is no reason to be a ornery antagonist ... not saying any names of course. )
Now on to my rambling thoughts: If you look back through all the annual threads and refresh your memories, I think you'll likely agree that the swap has devolved a little each year. There is not one single thing that has caused that IMO. Some of it is the initial excitement has worn off. Some of it is the individual experiences with prior swaps have caused alumni to drop out the next year -- whether not getting a bow, not getting a bow they thought was equivalent effort, or just the stress of trying to make the deadline with everything else in their life.
I personally did not enter this year as I knew the year would be crazy for me and that it was not worth the added stress of meeting the deadline with everything else going on. Whether I get a bow in return at all, or what the quality of the bow I get in return is doesn't really matter to me. Like many, I've always participated in the swap for the challenge of the build and the giving aspect of things. That said, I'm still very excited when a tube or box shows up on my front porch. I take it around and show it off, enjoy shooting it for a bit, love posting pics back to the Bench, etc. But then I usually revert to the same old bow I always shoot. Many of the swap bows I've found good homes for over the years, often with newer shooters. The others I still have and love to occasionally shoot a little, but will likely pass them along to a good home when one pops up.
Of course, many others who participate in the swap are counting on receiving a new bow. They may not make many bows, and the efforts they put into making one for someone else are efforts they're not putting into making one for themselves. For them, not receiving a bow is a much bigger deal. And of course there are some who if being honest are simply hoping to get that dream bow from one of the more outstanding, experienced bowyers. I don't think there's anything wrong with that as long as they're putting forth an honest effort to do the best they can for their recipient.
We all have our reasons for participating (or not), and we all have our own thoughts on how important the bow we receive (or don't) is to us. But I think most of us do get a little bent when each year the respect for the deadline seems to fade a little more. Things will always come up that cause a percentage of people to miss the deadline, hopefully by only a little. But the deadline and the other participants in the swap can still be shown respect by communicating the situation and staying focused on seeing your commitment through. I think this is where leadership comes in.
When we started this, Stiks ran it and had Kelly to help him out. I think they did a bang up job together! When he realized he simply didn't have the time or enthusiasm to keep with it, he turned the reins completely over to Kelly. I know that there have been offers made to help Kelly, but I'm thinking he always figured he had it covered. However, it seems this year has been tough for Kelly with his service to keep up, often due to the ability to get online regularly. I think if this does go forward again next year, Kelly should find someone to help him keep this thing on the rails and as a team they should be reaching out individually to those who are past the deadline on a very regular basis. That doesn't mean there won't still be the occasional Hova in the mix. But it will help keep those who are just a bit busy or overwhelmed in the fold and motivated to see it through in good time.
My initial feeling was that maybe there shouldn't be a swap next year. Maybe it's reached the end of its journey. But the more I think about it, the more I think it should go forward again next year. Even with the late bows and the few who never deliver, the swap is more positive than negative. It gets many of us talking and getting to know each other in a way that doesn't always happen in the other threads. It pushes many of the newer bowyers to challenge themselves in a way they probably wouldn't if there wasn't a deadline and a discerning bowyer that they want to impress on the receiving end. It gives the more experienced folks a chance to help mentor and feel good about sending a bow out that will likely be cherished by the recipient.
If there is an 8th swap next year, I currently plan on participating and hope many of you will join me. That said, while I realize it's a somewhat thankless job and I truly mean no disrespect to him and everything he's done over the last 7-1/2 years, I do hope that Kelly takes on an assistant to help share the load next year.

Dave , will you run for pres? Nah , you make too much sense. :D
-
"My initial feeling was that maybe there shouldn't be a swap next year. Maybe it's reached the end of its journey. "
i don't agree with you.
we all need to have some respect to each other. there can be several "can not be avoided" reasons for the bowyer to keep up with dead line.
there are people who sends their makings long time before the dead line and there can be people can not finish at the time.
at the end of the day, we are all human.
personally i have learn a lot of things from this event (also from this forum). i really like to be in if there is new bow-swap event next year (and if i am well enough i can be following years).
best.

I certainly hope this continues in the future. While I don't participate, I still really enjoy reading the bow swap threads. They were some of my favorites long before I ever joined TradGang.

Hopefully this worked. I upgraded phones and got the Imgur app. So hopefully I've got it figured out how to post pics. If so, then this is tre bow that I sent out.
As long as the trade keeps going on, I'll keep playing. I'm not too concerned about receiving anything or even if it's super nice. There's always something that can be learned from each one.
Kyle
-
Nice looking bow Kyle, I like the way you did the handle wrap.
-
Thanks Roy that's a amazing offer. I'll pm ya.
I understand that life can throw curves but I also understand that when someone makes a commitment they should honor their word. I built 3 bows because I wasn't hitting the right poundage that I was supposed to be making. I know not everyone would have that time but I said I would build and ship a bow on time and I ment what I said. My biggest piss off is that there is no comments or input from the late shippers or Kelly explaining things.
Personally after this year I can't see me participating again...
-
Roy when have you know me not to make things right in the swap. Krasus i know your bow is en route, but I know patience is not something we have now days. It sucks when you are waiting I know. I PM those who have not shipped and if I think there is an issue I PM the recipient and let them know.
And I think most late bows are some of the best, but I may be wrong for some just want send on something they feel is not their best.
-
Thanks for the update Kelly, I do appreciate it.
-
I am tracking 2 bows in the mail
-
this year is the worse it has been. ever.
That is what started all of this Kelly. All that's been asked here is some communication from the late shippers. I don't see a problem with keeping those waiting on a bow informed.
-
True enough roy. I have not been responding on here as much as in the past.
I have been PMing all the late shippers and have no real concerns if I had I would have PMed those receiving the bow.
So since 2011 to today 359 bows have been made and shipped. every state has been shipped to and every Continent. Everyone who has shipped a bow has or will get a bow. It has always been that way. Even If i have to build it myself.
I know the wait is tough I have been on the long wait myself.
But 359 bows in 7 years. I don't have the date from 2010 ( was not part of it then) But I know those numbers would push us to over 400!
It is good to be part of it. I don't get anything out of this other than the satisfaction of knowing and hear the joys from other like me. Is it perfect system no, but like the US herself show me better.
Happy building and I will keep on working to ensure all gets a bow. God Bless
-
I got nothin' but love for ya Kelly. And I have so many bows, I am in no hurry for another. But I will say, the two best bows I own, other than the ones I have made (if I do say so myself) came from the swap. Although there is that Joe Mattingly bow, oh yeah and the Bob Barnes, and the Ferret bow...
Nevermind. Some of the best bows I own, I got from the swap :)
Thanks for all you do!
-
The bows I have gotten in the swap are better than I build for myself for sure. But Ironically the best bows I ever made ended up going to others.
However none have had the mojo of my first self bow.
-
There was a moment when I was thinking maybe we should build bows for the St Jude fundraiser. The Bowyers of Tradgang donation. I don't need another bow but would make one for St Jude.
-
I think they did a pass around bow one year for that if I remember. Some one donated the stave another makes the bow. another adds skin or hide backing someone added tips . a string with silencers were added a case made arrows added. But it was mailed from 1 to the next. each adding what they signed up for. It was a cool project. It think it was for saint jude.

i agree with you.
plus, no matter what condition the swap bows are, they are still more valued for me. i feel like somebody around the world, give his time, care about making something just for me. really i do not matter the result. that feeling is enough. while joining the event i have always given my specs like "whatever / however bow you like".

Sorry to hear that Krasus. Most bows I've gotten have been at least shoot-able. Some better than others. I just try to remember that there are usually many new Bowyer's in the swap and I have to assume everyone is trying their best.
I am disappointed in the lack of communication in this year's swap though. I realize everyone has a life outside of the computer, but we all need to keep our word and take care of the things we commit to. If a man's not good on his word, he's not a good man.
-
expecting santa clouse dropping something from chimney.
best.
re: sorry to hear that krasus.
-
When we started doing bow swaps on PA many years ago the main intention was to get new bowyers to challenge themselves to build the best bow they could for their recipient and not see what bow you could get. I believe that lots of guys that would have lost interest otherwise built bows they could be proud of and learned some of the finer points of wood bow building and most are still building bows.
I guess it depends on why you get into these bow trades, to help someone else learn to build bows or to receive a bow. I've been in lots of bow trades here on TG and on PA. I've received some fine bows on both sites, some glass but mostly wood. They are all still cherished pieces in collection whether they are excellent examples of the bowyers craft or just badly bent sticks. I know they all were the best the bowyer could build and for me they are all top shelf.
If you are not willing to give without an equitable return I guess you shouldn't get into a group bow trade.
-
I hope this bow swap thing keeps going long enough for me to participate, been reading about these for along time. I agree with Pat Bs line of thinking. Some of my most prized possessions wouldn't fetch 2 bucks in a thrift store. And I get more satisfaction than you could imagine knowing that some were some guy is saying to a buddy "hey look at the finish on the wood work in the den, had some hillbilly named JW from NC do it hand rubbed every bit of it." Maybe ill make a bow one day someone can say the same about. And if I do get to participate I want my bow from a new guy.
-
I'm not in this year but I think if it's to continue this year's swap needs to be cleaned up and finished out soon. The next swap would typically kick off right after the New year.
I've been in twice and both times received better than I sent. But it did inspire me to do better work.
That's what it's supposed to be about.
I'd like to see the swap get back on track and continue into the future.
-
Pat - I couldn't agree with you more. I am in this year's swap and knew going in all the rules and guidelines. I was not expecting a top of the line bow. I was expecting someone to do the best they could and send out a bow. I and a few others are still waiting. That along with the non-communication (not a single pm to me) is a little disappointing.
Monterey nailed it - this year's swap needs to be cleaned up and finished out so a new swap can be set up.
-
I haven't been in the swap for a couple years. When I was in, I was very fortunate to receive a couple top notch bows in a very timely manner. Not that that was my goal for being in - I just got lucky.
I quit jumping in because it seemed like each year it got strung out longer and longer waiting on people to ship. For me, it wasn't the fear of not getting a bow or getting a bow I wasn't pleased with, it was more the principal of some guys (certainly not the ones that built for me) not holding up their end of the deal. I just don't feel like dealing with that sort of stuff.
I would be up for a one-on-one swap/trade if somebody wanted to do it, but I don't know that I'll ever get in a big swap again.
-
Yes the bow I received had a lot of 'issues' ;) I didn't feel right sending it on but I had a lot of family issues happening when it was time for me to build and really couldn't get something built that I would have been proud to send.
For me it seems like these swaps would work best for new comers to bowyery. They are likely to learn the most from seeing somebodyelses bow. I have made many hundreds of bows and have been dissappointed with most of the bows i've recieved in previous swaps, just unlucky or my stabndards are too high! I can tell how much or how little work/care went into them purely because I have been doing this for as long as I have. For me I have seen a lot less care exercised than I put into every bow, for me that means it just isn't worth it.
I think personal swaps are the way to go.
-
In past swaps, there were always updates from guys who were late shipping. That was fine because at least they were posting about their progress and they did indeed ship out a bow. This years swap has had none of that. No communications at all. That tells me they have no intentions of ever shipping. That just isn't right.
-
It would be nice though if Kelly would jump in here with any updates.
-
I hope that these continue. Before I even joined TradGang, the bow swap threads were my favorites. I loved reading through and seeing all the WIP pictures and the finished products. Would be a shame to see it end.
-
Unfortunately there is always at least one(usually more) that doesn't follow through or bugs out all together. In most cases others pitch in to be sure everyone gets a bow. Also, many folks wait til the last minute to get started and being that they are unfamiliar with the process they either don't complete in time or just drop out.
The cool thing about these bow trades is most are willing to help anyone that posts pics and presents problems they are having. This helps the newbie builder get his bow built and learn as he goes.
It's been a few years since I've been involved in a bow trade here or on PA. I just don't build as many bows as I used to.
Also, there is a lot of work and time involved heading up one of these trades. It's like hearding cats trying to keep everyone working on their bows so they can get it out on time. You would think 3 to 6 months would be enough time but life sometimes gets in the way.
I think Kelly has done a great job in the past but I can understand his frustration. I first got to know Kelly when he was in Iraq, trying to build a selfbow from found wood, using the exhaust from a big generator as a heat source for bending and straightening. When Kelly got back from his tour he killed a very respectable buck in his home, Kansas with a selfbow he built in Iraq.
-
Maybe there could be some system of assigning a mentor with experience to the new bowyers. Mentoring online here on the Bench is good but a behind the scenes mentor would be on top of the problems before they arise.
Maybe we should establish a volunteer mentoring program here that has nothing to do with a swap?
Just thinking out loud and typing as I go.
-
I think we should try and get this one finished so we have a clear slate for next year. Also I would like to suggest a few things that may improve the swap.
Hard deadlines. This would eliminate dragging it out too long. Maybe a target due date, one month last chance extended date then its over.
More people involved to assist with management, better communication on both sides should keep things on track better.
Require updates, frankly this has been a very boring thread with minimal pictures or updates. Hard to tell whats being done with no comments or picture posts.
Thats my 2c. I think we can do better.
-
What's the average cost of shipping a bow, inside the 48 any way?
-
$20 to $30 depending on how far. You can calculate the cost on USPS web site. I always ship USPS Priority Mail and don't add extra insurance. It comes with $50 insurance but they've never lost anything I've shipped with them over many years.
-
Thanks, that's not bad at all. Maybe I can get in on the 2019 swap.
-
I still need 3 bows is the update from my last count.
Any bowyers willing to help out shoot me a PM.
-
Sorry to those who did not get a bow yet and for not jumping on here more. I have contacted all the bowyer who were supposed to finish out and they have not responded back. So I will need help.
Roy you up for making a bow?
-
Sure Kelly, I'll volunteer the time it takes me to make a bow to help ya out. That would be between 30 to 40 hours time. If you or someone else volunteers the materials and shipping costs to cover my expenses to build a bow for a swap I was not entered in. That would amount to about $100.00.
I didn't enter this swap for a few reasons. One which is already being discussed in this thread. Another is, I have many bows I need to make already to meet my commitments to clubs and other guys I have agreed to make bows for. I'm not like the guys who backed out of this swap, I accept my responsibilities.
So sure Kelly, I will make a bow for the swap, if others pitch in to cover the materials and shipping, however it will be many months till I could do that. I still have 4 other bows to build yet.
-
Kelly, message send.
Bert
-
Ok 1 down 2 to go. Thanks roy I may contact you if I don't get another to volunteer.
-
That's fine, Kelly.
-
If Roy ends up building one I'll cover the materials.
-
Randy, you are a good dude. ^5 bud.
-
So back in October, there were 4 people on Kelly's list still waiting to receive:
Ink
John Scifres
mwosborn
talkingcabbage
Now we're down to three, I must have missed who got a bow. And more importantly who are the three AWOL bowyers?
-
i did not receive one yet but that's ok for my perspective.
to ease the pain i have an offer: (well actually we kind of like this pain, right?)
1. i can accept the raw materials
2. i can be the last one
3. if it becomes real problem, i can pass this year, which is really no problem to me.
4. i can accept used one. (which is more spiritual to me)
well Kelly, your choice mate...
best.
-
You could talk to Terry about banning anyone from TG that has not shipped the bow they promised.
-
well my intension was NOT to ban someone. just trying to be helpful here...
-
Beyaz, In every bow trade I've been in(many over the years), here and on PA there is at least one person that gets a bow but never reciprocates. IMO, these trades are to share with others and to help new bow builders build confidence in themselves and their ability to to build bows for others. I don't like the idea banning folks either. If someone in other sales or trades here doesn't come through there are repercussions. I'm just saying that there should be repercussions, whatever that may be...or just live with it.
-
Ink, any man who signs up for a bow swap, receives his bow, then bails out and doesn't ship out a bow, should be banned. Their name should be posted here also so we know who not to trust in the future.
-
Roy I would agree with you completely. It is one thing to have stuff come up and communicate that with the group, it is completely something else to bail without any communication and explanation as to what is going on.
I certainly do not "need" a bow. But it would have been nice to hear from my guy and let me know why he couldn't come through.
-
A lot can be forgiven with a little communication.
-
Well I think I have bowyers lined up to help fill the void.
-
Good job, Kelly. This has been tough on you as well as the participants who got skunked.
-
Hey Mitch, AKA mwosborn... Guess What you are gonna get? :) How does a trilam from Pennsylvania sound? I got your specs, but do you shoot split or three under?
Kelly, let it all hang out here. Post the names of those who screwed the guys in this swap. Why not I say. They had the guts to bail out after they got a their free bow, they should have the guts to take the shame...
Just a simple post of those who have not shipped would suffice.
-
Roy, a trilam from Pennsylvania would be wonderful! :) It certainly would find a special place in my bow rack and would see some field time after whitetails. I very much appreciate you stepping up. Could I help out with materials and/or shipping? I do shoot 3 under.
-
All costs have been covered by two good men on this site. I just gotta build it. Ya ok wif pink dye? I got some left over from a bow I made for KennyM.. LOL
Ok on 3 under. That's my favorite.
-
Another example of the generosity of the people on this site - thank you. :notworthy:
Roy - I will trust your judgement on the color. I guess if pink was good enough for Kenny it's good enough for me. :D
-
Hadn't checked in on this post for a bit. Roy told me when he made my bow he had some dye left over from tie dying his undies....
-
Well Having a BBO from roy myself. I bet you will no be up set in the least.
-
What are the time tables for a bow swap? Say you sign up in January ship by ???? How does that work?
-
You can look up last year’s sign up thread for the full rules, but nominally ship by June.
-
[dbl post]
-
By June?
Now that's funny:)
-
Good to see some communication on here finally. I've been away for awhile and finally had a chance to get back on. I halfway figured it was just over. Thanks to you all who is stepping up to fill the voids.
-
ttt
Kelly is still running this one to ground and I don't want to steal his thunder here, but with the 2018 signup going on I don't want the 2017 swap to be forgotten until it's truly wrapped up.
Ink, my understanding is that your replacement bowyer should be shipping in about 2 weeks. And then the long, tense wait to get through Turkish customs I guess.
-
Well I got a message from my new bowyer and it's on the way! Should see something around next Tuesday.
-

 Good to hear.
Roy stepped up and is building me one of his famous trilams. He said I had to wait a few months though! I said it would be worth the wait and it would give me time to build him one of my not so famous glass longbows. :D
Looks like all is going to work out for 2017 unless I am missing someone.
-
Stinks that you have to wait so long, but it's awesome that Roy stepped in. I'd love to have one of his trilams. I suppose if you have to wait, he's definitely one worth waiting for!
-
I got my swap bow from Bert today! It's a beauty for sure. He might have to give some details, but I think it's birch (may be hickory) and lovely! I hope the picture links work. It's my first time trying to post with imgur.
TG bow swap bow 2017 https://imgur.com/gallery/ogVNd
Thanks so much for stepping in to fill the gap Bert! Hopefully tomorrow won't be so cold and I can shoot it some.
-
That's great... Looks sweet. Also looks like a Yew Bow....
Thanks Bert.

-
Nice bow.
-
Hello gang,
Yes Roy it is a Yew bow, spliced from an almost dead branch that was cut from a tree in Oregon during one of the NALS shoots.
The top of the limb had a lot of little pin knots in it which makes it look kinda cool.
Nothing real fancy but it shoots a pretty nice arrow and hope Joe can put some meat on the table with it.
Cute little helpers by the way :clapper:
Enjoy Joe.
Regards.
Bert
-
I sorta figured it was a yew bow. I made one a few years ago and love it. My stave also came from Oregon. Guy by the name of Keenan Howard sent it to me. I would love to get ahold of another yew stave..
Thanks for stepping up, Bert. ^5
-
Can't remember who's name I got in this 2017 bow swap, but I have gotten a start on his bow. Sorry I am late... :)
However, it is still going to be a while till it's ready to ship. As I have a couple other bows that need tillered and finished yet ahead of his.
But at least it's a start.
So, here are the teaser pichers.. LOL :)
Hope ya don't mind, but I did mix a little Miller Light in with the unibond800. I've learned that a little alcohol enhances the properties of the unibond.
It also turns the color of the glue darker, which is cool with the Osage, Red Elm, and Boo.
The bow is 60 inches tip to tip. I backed off a little on the end post height, so as not to get too much reflex. Too much reflex is a bugger to tiller out.

-
That yew bow looks sweet. Well done Bert and congrats to Joe for receiving such a nice bow!
Roy - whoever gets that bow I bet they are going to like it. That osage looks cool and will only get better over time.
Not sure about the miller lite - not sure it even has any alcohol in it to enhance the unibond.

Mitch, I never did like you...
LOL
Yer gonna love it bud..

Not many people do Roy! :D LOL
I bet I will love it!
-
That's just great! Now we're going to have to live up to that bow sock.
-
Joe, those pictures were awesome. Your kids are very special.
God Bless ya brother..
-
Bert, what did you use to write on that bow? Looks nice. Is the writing over or under the finish and what did ya seal it with? Was it a Sharpie pen for the writing?
-
Ok thanks Bert for your help.
-
Heck bert not many of have a yew bow. So I would say it is special.
-
I had no idea it was yew. I figured birch or hickory. I've never even seen a yew stave or bow to know what it looks like, and now I own one! I'm tickled pink! It's supposed to finally be above zero today so hopefully I'll get a chance to get out and shoot her.
Thanks Roy. Those girls are always excited to open anything lol. Emma was being a goof
-
Joe,
glad you like it, please send me a "Hero" pic if you get a chance to take it hunting next fall.
Roy,I use a "Staedtler" permanent fine tipped marker on my self bows, I use Tru oil for my finish on them and put a couple of coats on before I do the writing and then do another coat or 2-3 over top.
I get them at an office supply store.
If you use an Epoxy finish it will dissolve the writing unless you are really careful.
Take care all.
Regards.
Bert
-
K thanks..
-
Bert - That is a phenomenal bow. Joe, you're a lucky guy.
Mitch - You're gutsy, I'll give you that commenting on the man's beer substitute while he's making your bow.
And Ink - The whole reason I scrolled down to this thread was to let you know your bow shipped. I PM'd you the tracking number. Let us know when you get it.
-
That's great on Ink.
-
Ya Canopy, I am not real smart!

Starting my 2017 swap bow part II for Roy...
Would a zebra riser with walnut veneers (thanks to Kenny) look ok?
Also, I had some maple lams ready to go before Kenny told me I lucked out and won some walnut veneers - would the light colored maple lams look ok with the other darker woods or should I get a darker colored wood for lams?
-
I'd go with the maple cores for a nice contrast.
-
Thanks Mike - I agree, think I will go with the maple for a contrast.
-
Sure, go ahead and tease me all ya want.. :)
Thanks, Mitch..
-
Hey, what's wif the Pepsi can? LOL
-
I disguise my beer in pop cans. LOL
-
Well fujimo's bow is done.
Yer up next Mitch.
Kenny, ya have any pink leather for a handle wrap? :)
(http://i.imgur.com/2Pb4qTR.jpg) (https://imgur.com/2Pb4qTR)
-
You just concentrate on the tillering and worry about the handle wrap later! :D
-
LOL ok...
-
Latest update:
"Your item was delivered in TURKEY at 12:34 pm on February 21, 2018."
Hopefully we have a happy Ink when he gets home from work today.
-
Cool beans.
Is Mitch the only one left or is John still waiting?
-
John?
I think the three were Joe, Mitch, and Beyaz. Joe got his yew a few pages back (you posted the pic for him Roy). The bow to Beyaz has been delivered, we still need to hear from him that it was delivered to the correct person. Which just leaves Mitch who knew it would be a little while.
Technically Kelly is still riding herd on the 2017 swap, so I'm sure he'll correct me when he gets a chance if I'm missing something.
-
Page 26. You posted this.
So back in October, there were 4 people on Kelly's list still waiting to receive:
Ink
John Scifres

Or did I miss John getting one?
-
I'm amazed to read this!
Good guys that stepped up to fill in for the #$%^@#*&^'s that took a free bow and ran.
If they aren't dead or darn near it there isn't an excuse at this point.
Even if they aren't dead..they could have at least sent their new bow as a replacement.
Shame on em!
-
Wow, you're going even farther back than when Kelly said he was down to three. I don't think you missed it, but it did kind of go away. My understanding from Kelly is that John worked something out with his bowyer directly and things were good as far as the swap goes.

hi guys...
i was sick for couple days and could not able to access post office.
the day before yesterday, i got this beauty on the way to my office.

-
I'm happy for you, Ink.
Did ya shoot a hole in the ceiling? LOL
-
Glad it made it. Hope it works well for you. That is definitely one of the better full draw pics that have been posted.
-
She looks nice - looks like it was worth the wait!! Is that a broadhead on the tip? Pass through on the ceiling tile! :scared:
-
Glued up the zebra wood for the riser...
Got the riser block squared up...
And Kenny sent me these wonderful looking walnut veneers!
Roy, I won't say exactly what Kenny said about using the veneers in your bow...but I am going to use them anyway. :)
Thanks again Kenny!
-
Nice Mitch.
Ya I never pay any attention to what that ole coot says.. :)
-
LOL
-
Mitch, I enter every give away he puts up. And I hain't never won nuffen. I'm thinken he doesn't even put my name in dah hat..
But ifin I ever did win something off the old fart, it would prolly be ah pair of gwass lams.
 :archer2:
-
That's funny! Unusual that my name was drawn - I usually am the last one drawn in the give away when everyone is a winner. :)
If you won some glass you would just have to build a glass bow is all.
-

thanks guys....
broadhead is from 3d printer...
i keep saying that 3d tech can be useful in archery as well...
make one for yourself and you will not regret...

Mitch, got the sides cleaned up, facets on back and belly, riser shaped, string grooves filed in, tips laid out ready to shape. That only took 8 beers, fuggered I better back away then.. :)

Will do Roy. Same with you - take your time - I am not in a hurry!
Wish you and your family the best this week.
Mitch
-
Roy - it came out of the oven in one piece! Didn't even need to use the hammer and chisel to get it out of the form. ;)
Maybe get it cleaned up and overlays on this weekend.

Have yours pulled to 27 inches. 1 more inch for your 28 draw and 1 more inch to 29 for good measures.
Kenny sent the pink leather for the grip last week.. :)

Ok, I feel better now....
-
Looks like somebody saw you were gettin a new bow and packed your bags for ya. Lol
-
Bvas - That is my hunting room - always have the pack ready to go. :biglaugh:
Ok, got her out of the tube Roy. Suppose I better give a quick review. LOL
She is super sleek and light weight. Boo is smooth as silk and almost glass like. Color and finish is gorgeous!
Wind is blowing like a son of a ******* but I went out and shot it anyway....
Very balanced, draws very nice, perfect weight for me. Very quiet and little to no shock at the shot. I even hit the target!
You did well my man! Thank you very much. It will always have spot on my bow rack. I plan to make a set of bamboo arrows for it and hunt with it next fall.
Ok a few pics...

Hey - If I am not mistaken, we can officially call the 2017 swap "finished"! It is only April of 2018. :scared: :scared:
Thanks again for stepping up Roy.

I can't hardly believe it's over so soon ... where's the crying emoji?
And Roy, while that bow you got looks good, it probably looks great if you venture outside with it instead of taking picks in a dark cave.
-
Dear Mr. Grant
You are correct.
Now please tell the weatherman to make it stop raining and snowing the past two day, and turn off the 30 mph winds:)
-
Hah! Thirty is nothing. I'm looking out the window at 50 with gusts to 75.
It's so windy here cause Texas sucks.
-
Well ya sent it this way cause there are 40 mph winds now and snowing like heck...
Where is spring time weather?
