I can pick up this 5hp single phase cyclone dust collector for 500.00. All it needs is the lid/adaptor for the drum and bags for the filters. The one filter is bent out of shape but still functional. Also will have to be wired direct to a switch . No remote.

A new 5hp Grizzly GO442 is $2700 shipped.. You can make the lid.. You gonna buy it? 5 HP will move alot of air!

It should be able to collect all the air you got. Good and bad air.. :)

Where does it vent the filtered air? Reason I ask is mine sucks the heat out of my shop because I have it out back so the jet noise doesn't bother me so much....

I will have to mount it out back of the shop also. Just not enough room and the noise would be to excessive.

You might better check how much power you'll need to feed the monster. That thing might need 50 amps at 240 v to run it!..

That thing will slam the door on you, hard!
As for the heat loss, if you were to recirculate the filtered air, it might help.

Shop has plenty power to run it. I believe it's 220v/30amps . But I may have to keep a couple windows open so it don't suck the walls in! Like David said!!

If 'out back'. Is an enclosed space, Just put in a baffled return running from whatever back room the collector is in to the shop. Then it's pretty much a closed system and you won't lose all your heat.
If the dust collector is outside, then yeah, all your heat is going to get sucked out.

Seems overkill to me. But I don't know how many machines you have that you're trying to collect from and how long and extensive your ducting is.
Remember, it's $500 plus the money you're going to put into it to get it up and functional again. Consider taking that money and looking at what you can buy new from Grizzly that may be more suited to your actual needs. You leave a 5HP blower running and you're going to start running up your heating/cooling bills in the shop, not to mention the actual power bill will add up. Unlike a 5hp saw which only draws full amperage under full load (never happens), a blower motor is pretty much always pulling full power. And they get left on a lot, especially if they're out back.
I got the 2hp G0548ZP so that I could keep it in the shop and not have to worry about return air. It has more than enough suction for the 15" planer, or the drum sander which are the two most demanding machines. I do shut the other blast gates so that it's only sucking from one at a time when I use those. Tablesaw and jointer I run together with no problem. Not as cool as a 5hp cyclo, but a much better fit.

Good points. Here's where I'm at. I can spend close to 500 on a new smaller machine that should handle everything I have now. I will still have the cost of hooking everything up. ( duct work) . But I may need to up grade at a later time.
Or I get this unit that will undoubtedly run anything I'll ever need . Like Robert said I can make the lid, my brother in law is an electrician and can wire it up for free. So the only cost Ill have in it is the bags which are replaceable.
But here's the real kicker.. I'm doing some concrete work for this guy and he offered to let me do some more work for him and trade the unit as part. So Ill still make some profit and acquire the unit.

I will enclose it outside the shop and put a return for the air. I have all the materials I need so no added cost on that as well.

I would make a filter for the return too Randy, my bags let a bit of dust thru, see it on my pickup out back.

hey Randy,
we run quite a few wood machines- producing all grades of residue- from super fine to coarse- and i have been down this road a fair way.
first off, those normal bag type extractors do an ok job, but not that efficient- they do put the warm air back in the shop, but the filter bags do not trap the super fine, really unhealthy dust.
those proper cyclones are the only way to go , in my opinion. you can do them in doors- most shops put them in their own insulated room- to help sound proof them, and as others have said you can put the motor, cyclone and debris bin outside- and the filters inside.
depending on your volume requirements- there are smaller options, very reasonably priced. check here

i also have access to plans for these, if you want to build one yourself- and you can build the high efficiency impeller too.
your deal does look like a very price though.
