Title: riser depth
Post by: rockkiller on January 25, 2017, 06:59:00 PM
I haven't been able to log in for awhile but now that I can I have a question about what is to little of depth on a riser.
Its a Kennym longbow and the riser is a flared tiger wood/mertle wood with two 1/16 phenolic accent strips.
Mainly because I have the brains of a chicken   :banghead:   the  riser came out 1 in. 3/8 wide and 1 in. 3/8 deep.Usually it should be 1 3/4 to 2" deep I think.
Its supposed to come out at 50 to 55 lbs @28.
So,do you guys think it will a safety issue and blow or do think it will be ok???????

Thanks for any help.

Usually the grip is around 1.75" deep and 1" wide, rounded of course.

I just had the same scenario on a bow I was helping a guy build 3 years ago. He never came back and he had no money in it yet so I decided to finish it. I think I handled it....

I can text you some pics if you pm me your number....

Heck , add 5/8" to the belly of riser and carry on!! Only needs to be long enough to catch the ramps. Got any sorta matching wood left?

Thank you Robert and Kenny
I do have some more wood that matches. Do you think it will be very noticeable going wood to wood?

If you have another pc of the black accent, lay it in there with the wood and look at it with and without.  You can get the look you prefer before gluing it on there.

Actually by the time you get your laminations and glass and some overlays on it you will be good to go.

God bless, Steve

Agreed. I would consider building up the belly side over the glass just to have a little more material to work with to shape the grip and style the sight window.

How thick you want it depends on how you want the grip to be shaped, for me it would be put more wood on the belly.

I somehow thought you had already glued the bow up..With my skill set I agree with KennyM and would add wood and phenolic to the belly side of the riser..But the width at 1 3/8" would make me start over and build a new riser..

I dont know how it got double posted ,but yep its the same picture. I didn't think of posting one after I glued a piece on the belly side.
Bow is in the oven right now but I will post a picture when it comes out and is cleaned up.

Well it dont look too goofy.I added 5/8 to the belly side.
But I'm still wondering how shallow you can go before it goes boom???

Quite shallow...
You would have been good without adding that 5/8" piece though the riser might have been too thin for a comfortable grip.
