Bout time son, its been 2017 for darn near 2 weeks! LOL
I tested generators ahead of the big ice storm that starts as early as 9 in the morning.
I'm hoping to bowhunt tomorrow so hope it waits a bit!!
-
I burnt feathers on 37 arrows into a shield cut pattern. I couldn't keep the garage doors open much because of the rain.
Roy, is that top limb just a tad stiff coming out of the fade?
-
Roy,
If you feed me, gimme a cot n some sticks of wood for heat, Ill come up and you can teach me about trilams. Ill even clean the shop afterwards.
-
Finished another set of limbs for a 3 piece I've been designing for a while now. So far I really like it. Lol. I'm betting the tiller looks just fine

I started a red oak board bow for my 4 year old, following a build along on this site.
Oh and i worked on a bamboo arrow, trying to get my technique down. Other than sanding the nodes, I cant get much straighter than this. Its still very long, like 39", so I have some room to play. It seems pretty stiff, like a 7595 Goldtip Traditional almost. I dont have a spine tester yet.

Me too
I'll be the beer assistant

working on a static recurve and cut a dead osage log
-
Roy,
Max said he's buyin the beer...
-
yea
-
Cut the grips into 3 bows I got on my bench right now. Two r/d s for me, and a hill style for wife. Just fished stitching her arm guard. Died the leather pink ;)
-
Very nice, Randy..
Clint it does look a tad flat there. He shoots 3 under also. He took it home to put a 100 shots through it, then when he comes back we will fine tune the tiller.
Those are 7 up cans on the floor:)
-
7 up cans, yeah right! :biglaugh: split a big osage log got 4 staves off half split and chased a ring on 3 of them. got them steamed and put away to season. Started on light weight takedown 'curve and also a 45# deflex/ reflex.Busy start to year.
-
I have to get two TD LBs done by early Feb. I have them all the way to the riser shaping and finishing stage. Had to order new 50 grit spindle sanding sleeves. The marblewood and cocobolo are gumming up the works!
-
Received my first ever package from Binghams.
Guess the only thing holding me back on my first build is me (and my three kids basketball schedules).
-
Made myself a bow sock out of an old wool blanket I found in a dumpster! Cleaned up as good as new - waste not, want not - yes, I'm a cheap so-and-so!
Got my tri lam ready for final tillering with the short string.
-
Got my tri lam ready for final tillering with the short string.
Pictures? :)
-
I've made 9 bows so far.
I have 5 shooters of varying weight.
The ones that broke are the ones I tried to document the making of in pictures.
If I post pics of this one and it breaks, I'll blame you, Roy!
-
Ok, never mind. LOL
-
This morning I got a ring chased and front profile roughed out for an EWB black cherry bomb. Depending on whether or not I make it to work tonight I'll get the side profile shaped and round it out.
Kyle
-
Finished the tri lam.
Decided against letting Roy jinx me, so no in-progress photos!
Will post photos once I have the finish on it and I have a photographic assistant for full draw pic.
Came in exactly the same weight as my maple backed ipe - #47 @ 28
Looking forward to shooting it.
I'll likely twist up a string for it tomorrow, if all goes to plan.
-
Awesome!! I'm sure you'll give details wen you show it off. but what layers did you go with?
It's been very slow at the store, so I got the cherry warbow roughed out and ready to start bending with the long string. The goal is 100-110# and it flexes on the floor like its about 150-200#. So I've got room to play.
Kyle
-
Hickory back
maple core
ipe belly
zebra wood riser and tip overlays
100-110 would be a tad heavy for me!
My heaviest bow is #60
The ones I've made are #30 - #42 - #51 - #54 - #47 - #47 in order of construction.
-
Shaped my grips on the three bows I got on my bench right now.
-
Got the finish done on the tri lam.
I'll post more bow photos on the original thread for this bow.

I finally committed to getting some bows made. I think I made 2 bows last year. I hope to at least double that this year. I have a sweet little osage selfbow ready for finishing. It might be my swap bow depending on who I draw. It's currently pulling 43# at 28". I have some skins picked out for it.
I also got a hickory selfbow ready to tiller. Spent a couple hours on it today. I forgot how nice hickory is to work with. Like butter. It's been at least 10 years since my last hickory bow.
-
Got the shop all cleaned out from the last two months of projects. Pulled out some old arrows to re-fletch for a guy at work, and started on a knife for him as well. Got some spiral-wrap flu-flu feathers in so I can make some up for small game blunts. So far, been really slacking on the projects. It's just too dang cold in the garage! With any luck, I'll be able to insulate it this year so it'll be more comfortable next year.
Been doing a lot of bunny hunting with my beagles this year. Every time I go out I'm on the lookout for osage trees. Found some decent ones on my sister's place that I think I'm gonna cut down. I haven't built an osage bow for a few years, but I'm down to one stave, so I suppose I could use some more. Maybe cut some shorter pieces and mill them down for lams and risers on the glass bows too.
-
Got the hickory bending pretty good last night. 47# @ 28". Got some finessing to do and then I am going to toast the belly. I'll post some pics tonight.
-
Looking forward to seeing the pictures, John. My first selfbow was hickory. I may try another one soon. I have a good bit of hickory here in the shop, and some nice shagbark hickory trees growing on the property.
-
My first bow was hickory also. It sure tried but my rookie mistakes killed it eventually. The best part about hickory is lighting a few scrapers wisps and making the shop smell like a BBQ pit :)
-
LOL, gonna have to try that....

Photobucket (or as I sometimes call it Boto**ucket) is dog ash slow right now for some reason. Here's a video. Let's do tiller along. What do you see?

both outer 3rd's need scraping

I just about finished up chasing my first ring. One knot left.

OK, I'll be back in a minute.
-
15 scrapes on the outer thirds:
Tilleralong (https://youtu.be/RlCoazYoRjk)
-
John -
What does it look like unstrung? Parallel limbed?
-
Specs:
69" NTN, 1-3/4" for half the limb tapering to 1/2". Looking for 40-45 at 28".
It is straight-limbed after resting now. Maybe 1" of follow right off the string. It started with 1-1/2" of reflex. It's decent hickory, cut as a small tree last year, taken to near bow dimensions and been drying in a reflex form since. It seems dry.
Don't think I mentioned that I am going to toast the belly after tillering.
-
Worked on the basement, in other words my sons 5 year bday present. Red oak, 46" nock to nock. This is at 16", from about 5.5" brace. The tips deflect within 1/8" of each other.
Hows it look guys? Those black spots are tape for my reference and stop points.
-
John,
I agree with Mad Max - outer thirds a bit stiff. The left more than the right.
-
I'll get back to it tomorrow.
-
Finished filing riser and did first sanding pass. The two opposite R/D's are for me and the hill is for my wife. :)

Looking nice, John, RJ, and Krasus..
-
Krausus I love the handle materials there. What is that pink and black?
-
Today I made a 4 piece take down. Never liked that bow from the start. I attribute it to operator error... But I learned a bit....
-
Thanks!.the pink and black is just the pink camo super action. (Maple). Other ones are wenge and futurewood (acrylic impregnated maple)

I figured out how to post photo images in the TradGang forum messages. Now I am ready to ask questions with illustrations.
(https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobbies/Longbows/i-CmQtR5v/0/M/2017011009264025-IMG_2053-M.jpg) (https://yanasakt.smugmug.com/Hobbies/Longbows/i-CmQtR5v/A)
Any way it was a stumbling block for me but I did "get it" after a few failed attempts.
I went back to the Photography and Video forum and wrote up a step by step description of how photo images are posted from "SmugMug.com". I hope that this will make it easier for other new members to share their images.
-
Dang Roy, that stinks.
Most people wait for a bow to fail then cut it up. But I don't see any break lines, those all look like clean cuts. What gives?
-
Didn't care for the tiller and it wasn't getting any better. Bottom limb seemed to be getting weaker all the time..
-
Was the wood a little if e when you picked it out?
or do you need glasses?
-
I gave it 20 scrapes on the lower limb (left) and 10 on the right. There's also a slight stiff spot just short of midlimb that I scraped 10 times also.
Hickory Selfbow Tilleralong - 3 (https://youtu.be/zOHVavy2o_w)
-
still looks like the outer 3rd's
The camera not staying focused
-
I think it's just shadows but the lighting isn't that great.
-
20 Scrapes outer third on lower limb, 10 scrapes outer third on upper. I do a faceted scrape a la Dean Torges. Slight angle on each side and then scrape the ridge.
Hickory Selfbow Tilleralong - 4 (https://youtu.be/ie4KMY6oNyE)
-
20 Bends.
Hickory Selfbow Tilleralong - 5 (https://youtu.be/CN5xZEtSAew)
I think the focus is going in and out because of me moving into and out of the frame. I'll work on that.
-
Hard to tell
need more light john
I scrape mine the same way
John you were at MoJam last year for the bow building?
-
I will see about more light. I was not at MOJam last year. It's been 10+ years since I attended. I need to get back there.
-
I think it looks very nice, John.
-
well, come on over this year
-
Just got back from shooting my new tri lam for the first time - putting more than 50% into a 12in square from 30 yards after the first couple of dozen arrows.
The ones that missed were pretty close too. Only a few real outliers.
Smooth and quiet.
I'm a happy fellow!
-
Moose beware, David.. LOL
Good shooting..
-
Sanded some more on my form and triple checking it for straight and square.
-
Just about to do my final sanding then time to clear my new babies. :)
-
Got my sons birthday present closer to finished. Shaped the fades, handle, and shallow shelf. Did a good whole bow sanding. The top limb is still a bit stiff, Ill just sand it out so I dont take too much off.

Nice RJ and Cody.
Ah Cody, what type of glue is that in the brown bottle?
-
Krasus... Nice job... What did yous to detail it with and how did you do it??

X2. I love it. My wife is jealous lol.
-
Lol that's the 7% amber ale kinda glue lol. No weak American beer up here ;) .
I cut a stencil out of adhesive vynal and then applied it to the limb and taped everything off. Then 2 coats of pink.
-
10-4...
-
Ah so you are into pink? LOL
-
Nice job Krasus
Cleaned the bow shop and worked on a bow
-
Picked up some supplies - a whole bunch of spring clamps and materials for a simple bow form. 2x4 for clamping support blocks to make a mild D/R
Sanded some bamboo - ran some ipe through the thickness planer - sanded the aforementioned ipe - did a test run for a power lam for the next bow.
-

Pretty sure that "weak" American beer is designed to wash down bourbon, lol.
-
Working on a leaner stronger riser for my next bow. It will be made with 5/16" hickory laminated together with 3 pieces of fiberglass as a beam. The rest will be 5/16" locust laminated with a 3 piece fiberglass beam. These two will be epoxied together with a curved joint with .030 glass and 1/16" phenolic to add additional strength. To keep the profile slim the limbs will be mounted into the riser. It's been labor intensive but I like how it's coming along.
-
I want to see this Ben
I have been thinking the same thing
-
I'll post pictures as I get more done and know it will hold up.
-
I have worked some on finessing this tiller. The lower limb (left in the vid) looks good to me but I still think it's a bit stiff midlimb on the right. It's pulling 45# at 28" which is the high side of my target and it will gain some weight after toasting so I have room to work.
Hickory Selfbow Tilleralong 6 (https://youtu.be/7VgOgezfYu0)
-
After 10 more scrapes on the midlimb on the upper (right) limb.
Hickory Selfbow Tilleralong 7 (https://youtu.be/6otxPXV1n3c)
-
That's about as close as I can get it on the tree. I'm going to pull it by hand and see how she feels. I actually shot it a few times. It has decent cast for still being in the rough. Heavy tips make for nasty handshock but I'll fix that after toasting.
-
look's good john
-
If you feel like sitting thorough a 5 minute video, here is how I toasted the belly. Marc St Louis wrote about this in Traditional Bowyer's Bible Vol 4. It's been a while since I read it so I doubt I did it to instructions but he deserves credit nonetheless.
Toasting a Hickory Bow (https://youtu.be/27y_u6nsNfA)

Got out and put a few dozen more arrows through my most recent bow this morning
Built the form for my next bow, tapered the ipe and bamboo ready for glue up this afternoon.
Enjoying a beer now.
Not a bad Saturday!
-
Yea I like the way he does it.
I did a ash selfbow like that and it turned out real nice.
Takes a lot of time
-
I went to a 3D shoot today.. This property is just 5 miles from my house. It's an old limerock mine thats now a ZipLine facility, the owners let us use it once a year for the TBOF annual Charity shoot.. -
Bow is looking sweet, John.
Robert, that's a great picture.
I'm heading out to a 3D shoot this morning. Suppose to be near 60 degrees today, unreal for January in Pa.
-
Reduced the tips and shaped the handle today. I'll give it a few days and then see what the tiller looks like now. Then on to finish. I'm pondering a black dye job, super dark and a beeswax finish.
-
sound's good John
-
Today I finished remodeling my workshop walls. I had them insulated with 2" thick pressed fiberglass insulation but nothing covering it. I put up 7/16" OSB all the way around. This project gave me a good opportunity to reorganize and hang up some of my tools. I caulked any open seams on the OSB. This should really cut down on my fire wood usage in the cold months. I found several big gaps along the ceiling that were open to my unheated garage. I decided to make a new frame for my work bench and cut it down in length so it will fit between the posts. I'm wasting 5" of room behind it with the way it is now. That doesn't sound like much but my shop is narrow. Moving my work bench back 5" will make a big difference.
These first two pictures were taken mid project

Nice collection of hatchets, axes, and draw knives.
-
Nice job, Clint.
-
Some white Kilz paint over that new OSB would really brighten up your shop.
-
Thats a lot of cuttin tools.
Put some more wipe-on poly on my sons little bow. I did a vinegaroon stain, but it kinda bled into the handle. Been trying to sand that out of the handle, the limbs looks fine, and the tips need work. Might find some regular stain to darken up the tips.
-

I thought about painting it but I don't think I want a white workshop. I kind of like the look of the wood. I've got plenty of lights in there so its bright enough for me.
-

I've got a pile of hatchet and ax heads that need handles. I left the wall space open on the other side of the window to hang them once I get them fixed.

So I got it back on the string. She gained 7# after heat treating. Here's the tiller now pulled by hand. It feels pretty good. I need to shoot it some and see for sure but it's kinda dark right now :)
I was afraid she might blow on video.

Wired up some new lighting in my basement shop. Garage shop has been abandoned after my new bandsaw got surface rust on the table after only 3 days. Basement is a lot better in temperature anyway.
Put up 5 8' 4 lamp fluorescent fixtures. Shop is only 13x25ish so it's pretty bright now. It might be overkill but I got the deal of the century on the lights so what the heck.
Every time I do something in this house I find some disaster left by previous owners. Today it was that the lighting circuit was not grounded and had a 20amp breaker with 14ga wiring. Idiots .... that's all I can say. So several hours later all the wiring is replaced, breaker is properly sized at 15amps .
Next step is to get the bandsaw down the stairs ... it's already taken apart, so just the frame needs to get down there still, but it's pretty big so I'm not looking forward to hauling it down there.
Next up is more wiring, need to put in a 220v circuit for the saw and 2 20amp circuits for other tools. Electrical is much less fun that bowyery.
-
Little Ben. .........Next step is to get the bandsaw down the stairs ... it's already taken apart, so just the frame needs to get down there still, but it's pretty big so I'm not looking forward to hauling it down there.
Be carefull getting that downstairs.I have that same saw and had to do the same as you.It is 352 lbs So unless you ars done having kids make sure you get some help.
-
Will do Al. I wouldn't dream of doing it alone.
After getting everything taken apart I think the frame with motor is around 200lbs. I couldn't believe the weight of that table and the wheels. That table must have been over 50lbs and each wheel had to be 25lbs.
I may take the motor off also, that should take another 50lbs or so off.
-
Glued up my latest.
Bamboo backed ipe.
As for moving large objects on stairs, quite a few years ago I was involved in moving a piano (upright of course) up to the second floor of a building via the fire escape. I'm lucky to be alive! ;-)

When I worked in my Ironworks shop I had to use different glasses.
My bow shop has white wall and now I can see.
It makes a big difference Clint.
-
Thanks for the nice comments. I got the hickory all sanded and smooth and put the black dye job on her. I think she'll look pretty cool.
Then I grabbed an osage stave and got most of a ring chased out. Interesting stave. It might make a bow...might not.
Visuals tomorrow. Battery's dead :)
-
Cleaned the shelves off in the bow shop.
I found lot's of stuff
:scared: :)
-
Unclamped my ipe/maple power lam/bamboo from the form - cleaned up the edges - scraped the rind off the 'boo and glued up the pieces for the riser block.
Making a large batch of chilli for dinner & the freezer.
Too early for a beer yet.
-
Told myself to take a day off from the shop so I snuck out and drilled the locater pins (BMA) then got a haircut, went grocery shopping, and took a nap. Now I look good, fat, and sleepy eyed.
-
Got the new sage laid out and almost floor tillered. Got some more cleaning up and then on to the tree. It's 62" NTN, just a touch over 1" wide. Going for 45# @ 27". I'll probably recurve the tips.
-
You are knocking them out John
Keep us posted
Are you going to Marshall Mo. Selfbow Jamboree this year?
-
I don't really know yet. I am thinking about it.
-
Well I got the final couple coats of poly on the hickory and have the osage tillered pretty well to 48# @ 25". Got a couple inches to fine tune. Cool little bow!
-
Yesterday I had some friends over for a day of bow building. We had a lot of fun catching up and even got some work done.

-
Lunch looks great, Clint. LOL on eyebrows. Three of us in my shop today. Hot Venison chili cooken in the crock pot and it smells great.
-
I will be there in a min. Roy
-
Waited on ya M & M, but ya never showed up!
I ate about a quart of it.
And I paid for it the next morning.. :)
-
Roy, if a meal's spicy enough, it burns twice!
-
I've been on a roll. All down hill. I have broken 4 bows in a row.
All BBI. All were just about ready for finish.
Starting to think my IPE was too dry or bad. All from one board. They all broke near the arrow pass out to the fade.
Sudden complete failure.
Haven't been using a power lam may have to rethink.
-
So have I Mac...
-
Sanded my lams to width. Cut and sanded riser template to fit the form. And shredded one tire tube.
-
Got a batch of snapping turtle skins started into the tanning process... for bow grips if all goes well.
Anybody have experience turning turtles into soft leather? I'd welcome your input as I've endured limited success up to this point.
-
I've only made 10 bows - 6 shooters.
Fortunately I've had a success between each fail and have had two successes in a row, twice.
If I'd had 4 in a row fail I might have given up.
I think that I could probably cope now, but hopefully I won't have to.
Good luck with your next.

Sprayed a second coat of buffalo hide on this bow I'm making for a guy in Arkansas. Not really my "cup of tea" but it's what he wanted. Going to have a black beaver tail handle wrap. I definetly have depressed fealing after 4 failures.
I don't keep track of how many I have made somewhere between 75 and 100.
Mostly light weight short draw bows, the easy ones.
This one is a long draw for me, 29",.
Realy think my wood is bad.
Time to order more step back and then get back on the horse.
-
Realy think my wood is bad.
Oh Mac, lmao.. :)
-
Little bit more and this one is done. Osage belly, red elm core, boo backed. 64 tip to tip.
Have it to a 6 1/4 inch brace height.
Pulled to 21 inches on the tree.

Got the riser block for my boo backed ipe glued on and started a project I'd left alone for a while - 3 piece takedown, totally experimental, but it will give me something to work on as a project I can do to occupy the glue setting downtime that bows lead to.
If it works, great, if it doesn't I'll at least learn something.
-
She be purty Roy
-
Mac, Roy,
I don't like ipe because I've found that you can get a flaw in the wood that's all but impossible to see until the bow is done. I think when they fall those giant trees, the uneven ground or other trees they land on can cause fret-like damage that's all but invisible. If you get one in your board, every bow you make from that board will break in the same place.
Of course if you get a good ipe board, the material is flipping awesome. If I ever build with ipe again, I plan to examine the wood very carefully after scraping to a glossy finish before I glue up the bow. After that, if I do get a failure, I'm throwing the whole board away and using a new board on the next bow. It's too demoralizing to have bows just keep breaking. Especially in the same spot.
-
I hate IPE. It messed me up bad years ago, so now it's forbidden in my shop.
-
Got an Osage heatbent yesterday and started on this wicked cool little snaky Osage. Got it all cut out, thinned down and ready for some heat correction. Gonna do that in a little bit.
-
Canopyboy, I think you are right on all levels.
Love the IPE whenmit works.
My problem is finding affordable osage.
And I am no longer capable of harvesting my own.
-
Let is see the snakey bow John
-
Today I cut some bow wood. This tree has been laying over for a few years. I got 2 full length logs and one billet size off the base.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20170205_131608_zpsmlzqgxfk.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20170205_131608_zpsmlzqgxfk.jpg.html)
I was happy when I saw the rings
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20170205_131639_zpsyl3gzp83.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20170205_131639_zpsyl3gzp83.jpg.html)
My redneck log sled got the job done but it was worn out by the time I got the last log to the house. It's lasted 3 or 4 years. I'll make another one before I cut anymore osage.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20170205_141052_zpsyyfafaow.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20170205_141052_zpsyyfafaow.jpg.html)
I noticed this tree a few yards away. It's been dead a long time. It's still good and solid inside. I like using dead laying wood like this. It seems to be a little harder than living osage.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20170205_145851_zpsxgielrew.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20170205_145851_zpsxgielrew.jpg.html)
There are some bows in that old log

I was happy with what I got done in a few hours by myself.

Got two bows off my bench. One for my wife and one for my buddy who does all my clear coat spraying for me. I'll post pics tommorow.
-
Very nice, Clint.
-
I hate you :D Very nice osage. For me I see a lot of riser blocks.

Glued some lams together...

Clint has all the Osage
Nice haul
John got me fired up, so
I'v been working on and off on this one, so I finished up the tiller/Tips/handle and glued on some Copperheads.
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b593/osagemark/BYOB/100_0989.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/osagemark/media/BYOB/100_0989.jpg.html)
I'v had this Billet for 2 years, It was narrow.
I did a V splice and had to add wood to the belly of the handle and I going to add to both sides.
The widest place now is 3/4"

Nice youtube John

got a molar tooth pulled this morning..
-
Ouch, Robert. Hope you are doing well. I see the man tomorrow. Broke off a tooth yesterday right to the gum line. I'm running low on teeth.. I could pass for a redneck... LOL

Pass?

The wife gets a root canal Friday.

Nice haul there, Scrub!
Envious of you Indiana fellas.

Nuff out of you too, smarty pants... :)

Roy that sounds painful, I hope they get you fixed up tomorrow..so far I am just sore, I have some meds if it gets worse. I need to work on a bow but I better stay out of the shop for now till I feel better.
-
Roy, I can carve you up a nice set of wooden choppers. I have a nice piece of zebra wood in the shop. Or maybe purpleheart! ;)
Dave.
-
why not make 'em out of Ipe, Roy likes that stuff. :bigsmyl:
-
I cut, shaped and feathered a long bow riser for a bow for my cousin. Curly maple. Lots of sanding by hand to avoid the dips between the curls.
Last trip to the dentist left me with two less teeth. On super bowl Sunday one of my daughters complained of a tooth ache and lamented that she has to chew on one side of her mouth. I told her "heck, I have a lifetime commitment to that".
-
I am healing up from getting a tooth cut out tuesday. I have a bow to finish but don't think I can spray finish on the meds.. So I made a Cigar Box 4 string Guitar yesterday and today, I still need to peel off a couple of white warning labels and cut strings... Now I need guitar lessons.. I put a Piezo disk under the bridge, I also bought a Line 6 15 watt amp. it sounds good but I can't play a lick. I'm gonna build another one after I get the bow spray finished. (http://i596.photobucket.com/albums/tt46/Robertfishes/firstguitar_zpsykep057m.jpg) (http://s596.photobucket.com/user/Robertfishes/media/firstguitar_zpsykep057m.jpg.html)
-
Feathered another riser. This one is wenge, the wood I love to hate!
Also built and tested an arrow tapering jig. Works great. Don't know why I didn't do it long ago.
Also tried to repair a 1/2 horse electric motor that wouldn't start. It started and ran for 30 seconds and then blew a cloud of stinky smoke.
-
I really like that guitar. That's on my to do list. I can't play either though.
Today I cleaned up some old snakey staves. Osage is some amazing wood. It can be laying on the ground for many years and still have solid bow wood just under the surface. This one is wide enough to get 2 bows out of it.

Took the day off from everything other than cooking.
-
You let the smoke out---- monterey, it's no good
Chased a ring on a Osage.
I have 3 going on at the same time
-
Worked on my bow oven. Got the box built with a front loading door. Got it all wired up to run 3-200watt bulbs. Still need to get the door sealed up and latches put on so I can give it a test run and see what temp it hits.
-
I was in my bow shop taking the sapwood off of some osage staves this evening. I heard the garage door open which means my wife and daughter were home. As I walked to the door of my shop I heard the engine rev up and then a big crash. The wall came flying in at me and I jumped out of the way. She stepped on the gas peddle instead of the brake. She has her learners permit. I keep my firewood in 2 barrels just outside my shop. I had a couple buckets of kindling in front of them. Luckily those barrels absorbed a lot of the impact. If those weren't there she would have gained more speed and hit the wall with more force. I'm sure I would have been injured. I was pretty angry and she was really upset. It did some damage to the car. My workshop wall wasn't to hard to fix. I was able to take a big sledge hammer and knock it back into place. It's not as straight as it was before but its good enough. My door opens and closes so that's good.

Stuff happens when they are learning.
When one of my girls was 14 we were going somewhere and she begged me to let her back the car out of the garage. I said " OK, but don't do anything before I get out there". Next thing I heard was a huge ripping sound. When I got there she had gone ahead and started without me and hooked the bumper onto the garage door frame and ripped it out to a 45 deg angle.
I couldn't find her anywhere but eventually she turned up hiding under my bed. :biglaugh:
Course it had to be 10 deg and snowing!
Many years later we laugh about it. You will too. :)
-
Robert, I like the guitar. Always wanted to build one, well more specifically an electric bass guitar, maybe soon.
Clint, that's scary. Glad no one was hurt.

Second daughter now has her driver's license, and so for we've only smashed up one car in the process. Fingers crossed they do better than I did. I took out my grandma's carport at 14 after convincing her I knew what I was doing.

Wow Clint, I just saw your post. Glad everyone is ok!!!!

Nice work, critterboy..
Glad everyone's ok, Clint. My x wife put my F-250 through the garage door one time, and I mean through it. LOL
-
Dang Clint!! That coulda been much worse!! Glad all are OK! Cars and walls can be rebuilt, people not as easy. Like Mike said, you will laugh about it someday!
Nice one Randy, love the horn. Thats a 2 pc too? For me? :D
-
Glad all is ok Clint, could have been a lot worse.
Randy, I really like the handle wrap on that one.
-
I got the snaky bow all cleaned up and floor tillered yesterday. It has a bit of a ring check that I am sorta worried about. We'll see how she does.
This is gonna be my first Torges style bow in a long time. I forgot how much I love the aesthetic of that rounded belly and bulbous handle.
Here's a quick video of my heat-bending part of the wonky limb. Of course the heat bending is more in the style of Gary Davis of Rattlesnake Bows. I just don't have my steam tube anymore.
Torges Style Snaky Osage - Heat Bending (https://youtu.be/mAow6vmOzHs)

John, after all that heat bending it's still going to be crooked. :) :p

I finished this bow on the tree yesterday, then had Kenny shoot it in. After he shot it a few times, I said do you like it, he said yes. I said that's good because it's yours... LOL

I did some work to prepare for the warm weather this weekend. I sharpened the chain on my old homelite XL-12, roughed out a few bows on the band saw, and made a new log sled.

I'll narrow the width around the knots as much as I can and I plan on making the tips very narrow and light. I'm hoping it isn't to bad. I've made holey bows before and they shot fine.

scrub-buster, if you make a nice shooter out of that stave, I'm might just hand up my bow making tools and leave this hobby to the experts.

Booked my Motel for the Tn. Classic.

Spent Saturday at the camper doing some off-season turkey and deer scouting. I found a nice smallish tree, think it's hickory, to chop down with the camp ax. Spent most of Saturday evening roughing out a bow and making a super-sexy walking stick from it. Hung my hammock and swayed in the 70 degrees temps in between chopping sessions. There might have been a cigar involved :)

Bad news in my shop, a very important tool bit the dust yesterday. The beer fridge died. No shame for it, it's 12 years old. The burial service is tomorrow morning when the garbage truck hauls it away. The new and bigger fridge will be here Friday.
RIP ole friend.

Right now I'm sitting next to the Daytona Speedway waiting on breakfast at Cracker Barrel..I am taking a DEP certification exam in an hour..

You need a keg fridge. To hell with cans.

Those half kegs weigh close to 150# full. I played that game years ago.

Found time to finish this up for my best friend's wife. 13" belly mount riser 59" N2N 29.87# @ 28"
I like how the honey locust blended with the purpleheart once it got hot. I haven't shot it through the chrono but finding that light an arrow might be an issue.
Kind of a delicate little thing. BTW I don't have the correct limb bolts in it on these pictures. (http://i.imgur.com/fq4bLms.jpg) (http://i.imgur.com/vDbDZqv.jpg) (http://i.imgur.com/xmARU6f.jpg?1)

Very nice, Ben. I've used black locust in the past, very pretty grain.
-
Roy this honey locust's grain picks up a purple cast when either heated with a heat gun or lightly burned when sanding so it really looks good with the purpleheart
-
Got my tip and riser overlays glued on and in the oven. Also got the back side of the limbs rounded off. Hopefully this weekend I can get a string on.
Sorry to hear about the fridge Roy. My beer fridge is running fine if you need a place to keep the Coors til the new one arrives. :D
Nice wood combo Galen!! What do the limb faces look like?
-
That's a nice looking bow Benbow

It is black glass. Pretty plain jane

Very nice looking lams there, Mr. Daniel!
Riser looks interesting too. What's the wood?
As for me, got my swap bow ready for the short string and worked on my back project - 3 piece takedown. Got the riser pretty much sorted, I think.
Limbs will be hickory backed ipe with either maple or walnut wedges. Riser is red oak but I'll likely do the vinegar/steel wool thing to it.
If it works, great, if not, I'll learn something!
-
The Sneak peek bow is curly maple
Good luck on your T/D
-
The veneers and riser look awesome Max.
-
Thanks Clint
-
MM,Nice veneer! I have a "two cherries" veneer saw that makes very nice clean cuts on veneers. I used to use utility knives but the saw is all I use now.I paid a little extra to have the two cherries blade sharpened an I got an extra blade sharpened too.
-
Nice saw Robert
If I get more veneer sheets I will get one
Thanks
-
Today I'm making all new sleds for taper grinding....
Last weekend cleaned shop up. :scared:
Shop is bigger than I thought after a bit of pyromania..... :D

Wet sanding a recurve..then hand polish to a super slick gloss finish...Then I'm gonna work on making a couple more Cigar Box guitars and a Whamola.

This osage has been on the ground before 1997 when we bought the place.
A good bit of osage is on the ground, cut for fence post long before I got here.
I have been trying to make table tops and walking canes and so on. Could be 40/50 years?
There may be a bow or two here?

It's probably fine Max, I don't know that I've ever seen Osage dry rotted and it's soooo hard there's only 1 or 2 bugs that can or will burrow in it.
-
I went to the pile of trees that were bulldozed back when we got the place to see what I could make out of some of it and the base of the tree looked like it could be a end table, so I was cutting some limbs out of the way and cut one log off and it looked OK so I cut it 6'.
We will see.

Got the swap bow on the short string.
#52 @ 20"
Just going to sneak up on it from here.
Won't be able to get back to it until Thursday.
It's Beer O'clock now. Got to get rid of that dust somehow!

Built another cabinet for shop, this one 30x30 wall mounted. Maybe I can keep stuff organized now.

Yup Kenny she is shiny all right. That's what camo face paint is for..
Thanks Clint.

I'd like to see them arrows when they are all finished up too. Super slick.
-
Took the EA-40 to the shop, and made a couple pair of TD wedges....
-
Is that all?
-
Ummm, cut brush around bridges for the first 8 hours... LOL
And went to bro's for last hour to look over his dirt work on a drainage ditch and tell him what I thought about it....
-
Me and my blind dog went for a ride to check out all the storm damage a few miles away. It's amazing what straight line winds can do. It flipped over a semi, snapped a telephone pole in half 10' up, tore off a lot of roofs, and broke off and uprooted a lot of trees. Spent the rest of the day splitting wood.

Thanks guys,
I was super excited when I saw them in real life. They looked good on the website, but the pictures dont do them justice. I'm planning to use them for my next bow, which will be KennyM design in 2piece takedown. I'm looking for some B/W ebony for riser and will combine it with either cocobolo or kingwood. I you are interested in some nice veneers, these were bought from shop in Germany. I'm not sure that I can post link to the website, but you can send me PM and I'll give you the link.
-
This is the last bow(my third) I finished few days ago. It is KennyM design 64" 45#@28". Black limba veneers, bocote, padouk and wenge riser with ash stripes. Sorry, no full draw picture yet.

That's about the best tillering job you ever did...

Almost completed with this bow. Need to make a new string and arrow strike plate. Just need to get the little details out of the way and shoot this thing. Couldn't tighten down the limbs cuz I didn't have the allen wrench with me but you get the point lol.

It's cocobolo, gaboon ebony, white and black accents... limbs are coco with African blackwood wedges and a boo core
-
Great looking riser...

Very nice, Justin.

Looks really good Justin!! You are really getting good at this bow thing!

MadMax you scared me for a second I thought you were making a bow out of that.

Yes it is, Clint. They started out as students and we've been getting together all winter twice a week for the past 3 years now.
Menu was a venison roast with vegetables in gravy, ham BBQ sandwiches, mac and cheese, donuts, peanut butter chocolate covered cookies, and Pepsi. :)

Nice job Monterey
Yes clint, it will be on the raffle Table
-
Very nice, Mike.
-
Finally took some time and got into the shop today.
Have barely had time to use the new saw, so I figured I would start on a nice, but rather gnarly yew stave I had sitting for several years.
Got it roughed out, floor tillering, pushed a little too hard I guess and it exploded right at the roughed out fade ... lesson learned. Round everything over before bending.
Seems obvious now. I've always done things by hand so this whole saw marks/sharp edges thing is new to me.
Like they say, the fastest way to ruin a bow is with power tools.
Took a few deep breaths and starting working on a nice ERC stave that I intend to steam into a deflex recurve shape and sinew back.
Also got a nice rosewood riser cut out and sanded for a tri-lam I'm planning. Going to be an 18" riser, nice tall sight window, probably 64" recurve, hickory back, ipe belly, undecided core. Really looking forward to that one. I've been building all my risers 12" and that really is like the bare minimum so 18" should be nice.
-
That sucks, Ben. Ya hate losing any bow but it really hurts when ya loose a yew bow.
I think 18 inches is too long, that's going to make your working limb a lot shorter. But you do have a short draw length.
-

18" is definately long. It will be a working recurve though so that should help a bit. I've tested the design I use to a draw length of nearly 120% of limb length, so for a draw of 26" I figure I need around 23" of working limb. Will be 1.5" wide also which is pretty wide for ipe, and looking for just 45#. Hope to glue up today, but we will see. I will post some pictures when things start coming together.
I almost can't believe I used to shape these riser blocks by hand. What a bear that was. With a bandsaw it's a pleasure in comparison. Speaking of which, I gave away my small benchtop saw to a friend who helped haul the big saw into my basement, which means I've kept my New Years resolution for February. Get rid of one thing every month .... trying to bring some minimalism into my life here.
-
I have something kind of similar on the go, except I'm making a 3 piece takedown. Riser is red oak that I'll likely do the vinegar-steel wool thing on.
Limbs will be hickory back, maple core, ipe belly with walnut wedges at the riser. I've got the ipe cut and the wedges thinned to nothing. Have to prepare the maple I have and pick up some hickory.
This is a kind of back project. I'm working on my swap bow and have the next build I want to do for myself pretty much figured out. Might be a while before it's done. Hoping to get in the #45 region.
-
Finished first of marble dipped arrows. The only problem Is that I didn't test if my clearcoat Is compatible with my cresting. It wrinkled slightly, but the good news is, that I only sprayed one od them. Here it is.

Hain't skeered of no Ohio or Missouri boys, dats fer sure.. :) LOL

You coulda shortened his arms a bit instead...

Looks you guys nailed it.

I was very impressed with how well a 68 inch wooden bow handled a 31 inch draw. It came out at 66 pounds. He didn't want any more weight than that. And it smokes arrows. And I was scared the whole time, once he got passed 29 inches on the tree.
But its fun now.

Heated in some curves on some yellow heart. 1st time heat bending and it was fun. Weird how you can feel the wood bending in your hand when applying pressure. Should be an interested build....

Nice Roy. I always appreciate when someone can build a nice all wood bow with a long draw length. Mine is 29.5" and it's been a struggle to build bows to say the least.

Not many riffs in a long bow!

I went to an auction today and got this truckload of wood for only $15. Most of it is white oak. It's very smooth, not rough cut. I got a handful of osage boards and one walnut.

Roy would have probably bought the poplar boards and tried to make a self bow out of them.

yep

nice Scrub Buster! I wet sanded a bow before lunch, started buffing it after lunch.. We took a 25 mile ride out to the Ocala National Forest and watched a Delta 4 rocket launch from Cape Kennedy..we were 70 miles away but it was after sun set and no clouds, we saw it pretty well..

Did some tillering on a new bow for me. Tri-lam as usual but with a long riser. I'm trying to work on getting more stability/consistency/accuracy/forgiveness in my bows. We will see. Hopefully pictures soon. Mostly side tillering and trapping the back and some preliminary sanding/rounding. Things are looking good so I think it might be time for the handle glue up. The handle will be a number of Osage lams and a rosewood accent. Mainly because it's easier to clamp lams to fit the curve of the belly side than to sand a solid block.
Started with the tips reflexes to 2.75" in front of the back of the riser, still about 2.25"'and it's been to maybe a 4" brace and drawn to around 14". Hoping to keep at least 1" reflex. I'm not adjusting weight at all, just side tillering for a nice even bend. I think it's going to end up around 45#. I was looking for anything between 40-50 so that's good for me, just something I can't hunt with and not get too tired shooting.
Please forgive the ridicules mess in my basement.
Just off the form.

... I'll try to get a picture up tomorrow of the current status.

I bet that riser looks good
-
My riser was still tacky after spraying it last night with polyurethane. So went and bought some of this stuff hoping I got the right stuff and that it works.
(http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad238/tcj59/CaptnCarp/7F004076-249E-4406-9941-D511010EC0AB_zpsi6inpnk0.jpg) (http://s939.photobucket.com/user/tcj59/media/CaptnCarp/7F004076-249E-4406-9941-D511010EC0AB_zpsi6inpnk0.jpg.html)
-
I sprayed the tips for a test, carried it back inside, and noticed it was dry already! So I hit the riser also. Now is not a good time to tell me I bought the wrong stuff!

Looks good
-
Tony, I gotta get me some of the VHT, the Dup color isn't as good I'm thinkin!!
-
That's it Tony
-
Got Clay'a bow in the oven tonight. It was quite the fight. Either I was feeling my oats or I got a weak tube. I couldn't tell ya how many times it broke on me. I think we are good though. Put a third wrap on it to be safe.
-
Looking good!! Using new bands for each bow? I bet heat is hard on em....
-
Yeah. New bands. The E40 blows out thru the plastic wrap and get on the bands as well.
They are used tubes. So hard to tell what kinda mileage they have on them.
-
LOL , ask for low mileage tubes!! Wonder if tractor or truck tubes are thicker?
-
Yes Kenny they are. I have used the same ones on my last four bows at least. I have broke some and glued a few up but they are thick! Mine come from my brothers 18 wheeler.
-
I love how fast that stuff dries. Sprayed it and it wasn't long before I was out shooting.

-
Couple good lookers Tony!!
-
Good looking! It gets much harder after a day or three.
-
These were semi tubes. I think they really did have quite a few miles on them. As I was slicing them I could tell there were thick and thin spots. I'm not gonna complain though. Free tubes are getting harder to come by. Most tires these days are tubeless.
-
Nice looking sticks carp.
I think I'm really gonna like the VHT as well. When I used it the first time, either the building was too cold, or I laid it on too thick. It didn't lay quite as flat as I'd like.
-
Haven't used tubes yet, but I get through so many mountain bike tubes I doubt I'll ever have to worry when I finally do a glass bow form. There has to be half a dozen dead tubes around the place.
Not exactly free, but at least they are not going to landfill yet.
-
Pulled Clays bow outa the oven. Now for some quality time with the grinder to find the bow in this mess.
-
Got my first self bow down to what now looks like a bow. The overall length right now is72 inches. My question is do I need to cut it to make a shorter bow or should I keep all that I have.
BTW I am having a blast with this project. It may turn out to be a bust but that's how a man learns
-
How wide is it,how straight is it?
68 or 66" is good, nock to nock
-
It is really strait and 2 inches wide
-
Made a new string and sanded off an edge that I had missed on the tip that caused it. Getting old I guess.
(http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad238/tcj59/ShadowCarp/55142C2C-7A3A-458E-9597-2F6101DEB8B3_zpspwbz4p51.jpg) (http://s939.photobucket.com/user/tcj59/media/ShadowCarp/55142C2C-7A3A-458E-9597-2F6101DEB8B3_zpspwbz4p51.jpg.html)

Got Clay's limbs profiled.
And the other half of the riser glued on.

Iv never been Very good at math. Bow came out 98 lbs at 28 inches. Big thanks to Krasus for helping sting it. I would try shooting it but im worried it is less a bow and more like a fibber glass wood bomb. but these are the joys of working out a new jig. Im trying to run the fibber glass through the middle of the bow.

If you copy the text below and remove the asterisks it will work.
I right clicked on the image in facebook, left clicked on copy image location. Then used the full reply form on this site and hit the image button and pasted the link.

I'm trying to bring back a turkey target from the dead this morning. It's about 6 years old and has been shot almost in two, so I put in a new insert, glued the worst cuts with contact cement and wrapped it in shrink wrap. maybe I'll get another year or so out of it.
Dave.

Got tip and back overlays on today. And got everything cleaned up. Starting to look like a bow now.

Cut out two wild honey bee hives and installed them in boxes.
One from an old farm house that is getting tore down. And one from a hollow tree that needed removed from a fence line.
-
Cool
Did you get some Honey?
-
No. The one in the farm house was helping a friend. He got the wax and honey. But he gave us the bees.
The one in the tree didn't have any honey stores. So we just got wax and bees.

I was shooting to get ready for turkey season in a week and a half and I was getting nice tight groups on my turkey target. Then, as I drew back for another shot, she went POP!. The back bamboo on the lower limb lifted a 10 inch splinter.
Good thing I was able to let down before it blew up. It was a 63# tri lam and shot a heavy arrow in absolute silence. Too bad...
Dave.
-
Sorry to hear that Dave, hope you have a back up.
-
Whatcha got there Bvas...
-
Good ole Black Walnut
-
Bvas
I got two fire wood logs last year right before I got to MoJam.
Storm came threw and blew it down.
I have about 4 riser and one log left.
Nice haul
-
After more failures than I care to admit, I finally learned how to make a useable Flemish twist string with adjustable string nocks. I put it on my new-to-me stringfollow ASL and went stumping. It has been a good day.
-
I got a Black Hog nose snake today (Road Kill)
They spread there head out like a cobra
non poison
Not very big but a good long handle/fade overlay.

I got my turkey gear waiting in the front room. We head out early tomorrow. :)
Dave.
-
Good Luck guys, I have to wait another week yet.
-
Didn't draw an elk tag so got my lion tag. Found a pet lion in heat youtube video and was able to get the sound track from it and edit that with audacity to remove the background noise and any hiss. Then I found an elk calf distress call from Yellowstone park which I also cleaned up and mixed with the lion call. I've got my homemade electronic call all ready to go and a bunch of calls on my old iphone 4 that I'll hook up to the caller. I'll be heading to the mountains north of here and give it a try. The max range I feel comfortable with my longbow is 25 yards so I should wear an adult diaper for scent control.
-
LOL back up against a big rock or sumpin Galen!!
-
so I should wear an adult diaper for scent control
I thought you wore those all the time? :)

Thanks Roy, it looks promising. Same salary, 10 miles closer, 4 kinds of insurance paid, uniforms, NO RESPONSIBILITIES (well , a little).
100 minutes more shop time per week just from driving distance difference. :bigsmyl:
Now if they pick me.......

Got Avery's limbs profiled and overlays glued on.

Hope the best for ya, Kenny!!

Nope, missed that one but got a good chance at one I like even better, and great pay. Haven't worked out the details, but it looks very likely.
Great haul Brad!!
I planted food plots today, at the cabin and on my place. All milo, they don't have any around for miles and they don't eat it in summer!
Wanted a pic of working the plot to prepare for planting, but didn't get it. Cat Challenger track machine with a 36 or 40 foot Eco tillage implement. 1.5 rounds and done!!

I mowed the lawn...so I could work on a bow later. ;)
-
Planted food plots Friday and mowed the clover patches today...
-
Put the final finish on my youngest daughters
bow.
-
Didn't happen without pics. :D
-
Used spar varnish for full gloss finish. Will get pics tomorrow after it hardens a little. That way I I can string it up and get full draw pics as well.
-
Planted berumuda around pond to stop soil from washing in and keeping it cloudy since we dug it last year.
Bushhogged roads and edges of field and rifle range.
Finished (nearly) building a JohnnyHouse for quail ...need to fit install the waterer and feeder systems, install quail funnel/predator guard, put in flooring and hardware cloth..and put on roof once out in field....and then paint/stain it for weather protection.
Got some new douglas fir raw shafts in mail...they are my next project.
-
Went to the exotic wood store today. im like a kid a candy store whenever I go their. so many choices to be had. Ended up with some bacote, zebra, limba, katalox, quilted maple, and jatoba. should be able to put together some nice bows with the choices I made.
-
I finally got around to making a hot box so I can finally glue up the lambs and glass I got from KennyM before he stopped selling and then started selling again.
Sure wish I could remember what I was going to make.

Kenny, what wood do you make the sleds with?
I'm seeing potential in your forward handle project.
-
Kenny you get that forward handle done and you still don't like it. ship it out here to Ohio. I will give it a go. Lol put a more recurve style grip on it and I will see if it will shoot through one of our big Ohio whitetails come sept. lol.
-
Worked on this sexy little thing :) Better get my rear in gear. Kenny is processing orders toooo fast. Got my parts and no form to put them on.
-
Mike, I make the sleds from aboo, since it is laminated, I have little probs with warpage. I do keep the sleds laying flat on a shelf.
Also keep them around 1/4" thick so the pressure rollers can press them done in case one does bow or twist a little. Lams come out great off them.
The forward handle looks lots better laying there than strung up. I guess it is the nature of the beast but I don't like the braced profile, full draw is fine and unstrung is too. LOL
Billy, I think it would run an arrow right on thru one if it shoots as hard as the last one. (I guess I didn't get any pics of it put up....)
Brad, I can't stand having work hanging over me!!
-

Have you tried putting a shorter riser in the forward handle?
I think a shorter riser would help with the "coat hanger" look at brace.

Yep I'm at 16" now. And get to work on that form! :biglaugh:

58" Recurve like this:

This is the latest bow I built on this form.
-
Had a revelation while working on my form.
Take a flashlight about an inch above your form and shine it down the length of the form. Now slowly move it along following the contours of the form. The light will cast shadows revealing even the tiniest dips and bumps.
Oh yeah.....and got the form done other than the washer guides and a good coat of wax.
-
I have a stainless steel rule 64th/32nd one side and .100/.010 on the other,
very flexible.I check belly ramps and forms, I can see all the bumps and low spots
A 1/2" wide stiff lam will do the same.
I use a lot of my machining tools for bow building

Here is what I did last night and today. Enjoy the pics.

Lots of cool stuff going on.
I'm way behind on 2017 projects.
I don't really mind having work hanging over me. :biglaugh:

And now the work really begins.

When laying up the bow both of my scarf joints on the actionboo lams popped. Getting those to butt together after getting everthing on the form was a PITA. No more superglue, longer scarf joints and smooth-on.
-
Good job getting those joints back tight! I use CA all the time , but with much longer joints.
I apply the stuff to both pcs and clamp for 5-10 minutes while I do other stuff. Haven't had one give for a long time.
Bow is looking good, keep posting! Not much building here lately.
-
Yes longer
-
Not much in the way of pictures today, this bow has to be done by next wednesday so I'm moving on. Got the limbs cut out, ground down to the lines and rough cut to length. Cut out the grip throat, narrowed the width of the sight window and put a fiberglass overlay on the back of the sight window.

Right now I am scratching my head, Doing some math for stack... Changing a few things on my design, including length, core woods, compound lam, shorten riser and trying to hit 32# target weight...

Pulled my first attempt at a Tri-lam off of the form. Osage/walnut/bamboo. Materials from Kenny and design from Roy.

Steve,
That is a one of a kind I had made at a machine shop. I can trace it out on paper and send you a copy if you like. PM me. :bigsmyl:
-
Wish I could remember who all needs to get credit for this but after copying another jig I was able to successfully cut and grind some parallels today. Once I get comfortable with that I may get me a taper sled.
And a word to the wise, that little board for keeping your work against the fence is stronger than you think, keep your fingers tips out of the way.

Got a lot done tonight. nocks rough cut, initial shaping on the tips, sight window cut, some shaping and first stringing. I am hoping she will finish out nice. My original stack was for #65, I changed from .050 glass to .040 for a target weight of #50-#55. I didn't scale the bow but it feels right in the range and super smooth draw. This bow will be donated to the rural leadership program I was accepted into last year, graduation is in a week where the bow will go in the silent auciton. I hope she raises lots of money and finds a good home.
Can't say enough good things about the supplies and service from Kenny's archery. Thanks Kenny.

Looking really good Pago, looks to preform well in the vid also. the only thing I would change if it were me is the shelf. I would like to see it drop off at the back... a nice radius along the entire shelf. But that's just me, and I am in no way trying to diss your work. like I said it looks awesome, great job.
-
Breazy,
Your observation is spot on. Some may think it silly but I like stick on rests but, I like to leave the option of shooting off the shelf as well. I seriously thought about doing what you are suggesting. Thanks for the complements, I'm not the best or most artistic bowyer but I'm happy with way my "style" has developed.

Sweet....

Nice looking bow Pago! What finish is on it, I like the texture of it.
-
I need to thank you guys, it's VHT. I followed the directions and sprayed 3 coats gloss within 10 min of each other, two light one wet. Within 10 min of that I spayed one coat Satin. It's pretty warm here and VHT dries fast, I hope not too fast. It has been 48 hrs and I'm contemplating shooting it tonight. Any thoughts?
-
I think I'd go for it after 48 hours! Heck, I shoot mine with no finish on em most of the time, then spray it later after more sanding! LOL
-
Oh I shot it before I finished it. My son and I shot it tonight. I hate to brag but I do not want to let this bow go. It shoots SWEET!
I took a picture of my son shooting it, not posting any pics on my fat keester on the interwebs.

Mark, nice stock!
Are those carriage bolts in your sander table?
-
Yes
First thing I did when I got the sander was bolt some aluminum angle Iron to the bottom to keep it from warping. 48 bolts
I can't move the table up and down, but it's nice and flat
I have angle iron running --- way and | way under there.
-
I noticed some flex in mine.....
-
When I do stripes in my risers I clam them to the Sander table.

That's what I'm worrying about.
I'm interested in your unfiltered opinions.
-
I like it, it should work well, depending on where the nocks land on it. I'd make the nocks be about 1.5" toward target ahead of back. Kids aren't gonna be too critical of bow speed, but it should at least penetrate gramps' tire, not a complete pass thru, just one sidewall.....
-
I built a similar looking 50" D/R and here are the specs...
2 -- .030 glass
.003 total taper
14" riser
.240 total stack
24#@22" and 28# @24 (max draw)
I think David Flanrey has the form now....
-
Tip wedges?
-
I don't remember doing tip wedges or power lams.
-
But I would prob use em now. At 60% size of course....
-
60% of what? your talkin to a dumbass ASL builder. :)
-
You sell those wedges don't you?
-
60 pc of a full sized bow and yep , make almost anything you want !
-
Yup Kenny always has a wedgie stuck sumplace...
LOL

I really like this one, functional art.
-
That's pretty! A lot of work went into that riser
-
Pago that is one fantastic looking bow. If it shoots half as good as it looks(I am sure it will shoot every bit as good as it looks) the critters are in big trouble.
-
Nice Pago. That worked out well in the throat area.
I got another one coming up just waiting on some buffalo hide.
Ziricote and curly riser with some birdseye veneers.

I think you guys are looking at Krasus' bow there....
Mike, love that ziricote!
-
I hope you guys are giving me credit for the bow I reposted above. That belongs to Krasus as Kenny said I just thought it deserved another look!
-
I guess it was ok... :)
-
Where is that one you just built Pago? It could use another look too!

Turning the template into a form.
I used Bondo to tune up the imperfections and didn't care for the results. Usually I use wood putty and get better results so the minor dips are not completely filled so it's back to the wood putty.

I bought some Bondo spot putty in a tube, that stuff was junk for filling on bow forms. The other in a qt. can with the little tube of hardener is much better stuff!!
-
I finished it up with the putty. Bondo is too high tech for me.
Working on a small order for the first off of this form. I'll get it off to you by Monday.
-
Over the past few days, I managed to get limbs profiled and overlays put on the shorty bow.

Man Brad, that LOOKS short, can't wait to see it done!
-
Kenny, all those Ohio guys have short ones..

Maybe so....... but the girls like them. :p

Got the riser mostly shaped today. Still needs a little work. Hopefully by the end of the week I can get a string on it and see how it bends.

Just got my lap top back from the computer hospital tonight.
It had a lot of dust inside and was running slow because it was heating up.

I got a nice R/D to post this week.

Worked on another r/d. Had to trap the back and lower the belly facets to get some weight off it. Some dummy forgot to taper the core lams and it came out too heavy.
-
Today I did a quick test run on a wall paper steamer that I picked up for a few bucks a while back. It worked great for recurving the tips on an osage bow. I'm going to build a sturdier steam box for the next one. The PVC got pretty soft. After 25 minutes of steam the tips bent very easily.

Looks good Roy. If you start making longer bows you are going to be turning the lights off and on when you exercise it on the tree.
-
LOL, took me a while to get that on the lights.. It's 65 tip to tip. Only ever made one longer and it was 68 tip to tip cause the dude had a 31 inch draw.

Brush wolf those look awesome. Can't wait to see the bow those make.

Nice lam's
-
It's been a while but I finally popped out another bow... Here are the stats for you performance Junkies...
It's a Girlie Bow @ 30#... 62" string... string tension @ 7" - 56.80#...
365 gr. - 175fps @ 29"
410 gr. - 164fps @ 29"
The bow was somewhat an experiment and I needed a lightweight bow for people that cannot handle heavier poundages... I need to get it bending a little more out on the limb for better peformance...

Nice work Shredd. Is that your own manufacture glass? Do you make it similar to the methos used by our our friend from Jakarta?
Finally got some time to work on the new RD form. It's pretty much ready for a lay up and my order from Kenny is here. Maybe before next weekend!!
First attempt with imgur
(http://i.imgur.com/FzLCwXD.jpg)
That worked. Suck it Photobucket :biglaugh:
-
LOL Mike!!
Rich, good lookin profile there! How do you measure the weight at brace, is that just whats on the string? 2 strings and a scale?
-
Monterey... Yes... Somewhat similar method... I make mine wider so I can get 6 - 38" lams at 1 1/2" out of one sheet...
Yes, Kenny exactly... It can help to fine tune performance, compare and see what is going on in the inner workings of a bow...
As a rule of thumb a fast bow (over 180fps) will have a string tension close to or over double of what the draw weight is on my R/D bows...So if you have a 40# bow and if your string tension is 80# your arrow speed should be up there...
If you have two bows at 40# and they both have the same string tension but one is a bit faster than the other it could help to narrow down why one is getting better performance, such as limb mass, taper rate or limb geometry... Just another tool to help decipher through things... Or visa versa... You may have two 40# bows with different string tensions...
-
Shredd is the 30# @ 28" or 29"?
-
30# @ 28"... If you look at the DFC chart you could see all the draw weights per inch... The speeds are at 29" because that is my draw and I am most consistent at that draw... When I get around to building that shooting machine I will be measuring my arrow speeds at 28"... I put 170fps in the the DFC chart as an estimate for a 28" draw... I did not have 300 gr. arrows to get 10gpp...
-
For some reason the pics aren't coming thru on my phone. That's why I had to ask.
-
Nice work shredd
-
I got the twins strung and tillered. Both 52 @ 28". Should be about 50 when done. :goldtooth:
-
Didn't happen without pics
-
Took a couple with my fone but haven't mastered putting them on here with it yet......
-
Send them from your fone to your pc in an email ole timer...
I need to splain it to ya?

Sad day..I had to cut down my Parson Brown Orange tree that my great grandfather planted. This was the last of the 3 trees at My house. My tree got the "greening" disease and has not put out a sweet orange for the last 3 years. I used to get about 200 sweet oranges off it every year. I saved a piece of the trunk in case I want to make something out of it..it's white with no character. I know a guy in SW Florida that had to cut and burn 200 acres of orange trees due to the greening disease.
-
Sorry to hear... Might make for some nice white accents...

I agree wif Roy

I made a selbow, once.

Shredd, I will be at the TBOF shoot next month.
-
Robert, I will be up north in Pa. Visiting family... Have fun at the shoot...
-
We don't allow Florida rednecks in Pa.
-
Yeah, Roy made a selfbow once... a long, long time ago. That was my first shop 20 years or so ago. Looking around in that picture, I still have most of the same tools, but have more grey hair now than he did then

They would not even notice one more redneck.

Looks like Roy was ready to audition for ZZ Top and hit a chord on his guitar :wavey:
-
I walked in backwards and everyone thought I was leaving..
It's that Major Scull move. :)
-
Look how young I looked. LOL
-
Roy that is all a matter of opinion!! Lol
Guess what I did today?? I missed weight on 2 bows! :banghead:
Can't figure it out. The stacks all check out but both came in 6-8 lbs light. One I can pike and pick up a few lbs but the other is for an individual. Luckily he's ok with the weight.

Today I skinned the snake that someone left in my freezer. It's long enough for a full length bow.

I also worked on cleaning up the rings around a small knot.

Making a checklist for gluing up a bow... Last time I forgot to tape my f/g lams... > :(
-
I wanna see a full draw on that naughty one. :)
-
Hmm a shoot through riser self bow???
-
No. The knots are in the working portion of the limbs. It will be a long shot on making it to a functioning bow. The heart shaped knot trails down the limb at the bottom. Almost the entire working portion of that limb will be split in half.

I can see sinew wraps in your future, Clint. Looking forward to seeing this one shooting.
If you ain't found a home for that skin, I might know where one is. :bigsmyl:
-
Me too
-
Cool stave Clint, I meant to look at it at the classic but I forgot to ask you about it!
-
I didn't take it to the Classic. I figured hole in the bow Chuck would talk me out of it.
-
Worked on the layout of the riser for the RD build. It's fitted to the form and base lams and needs to be sawed and ground for the ramps and the fades feathered.
Solid Acer saccharum. There's a bit of figure in there but not much. This bow is all basic and economical materials to create a baseline bow.
My SWAG is 45# @ 28"

Good day for glue to be put down. First fit to the riser.

Very nice, Stic.

This has been on my to-do list for quite some time now. I made a backstop for the back yard. I made it pretty large so me and my daughter can shoot without launching arrows down the wild rose covered hillside. I brought the conveyor belt pieces home from an auction. I bought 1 section of horse stall mat for $20. That's the only money I had in the project. The rest of the stuff I had on hand. I'll give it a test run tomorrow.

-
Fletched up some new shooting sticks for my new shooting stick.
I've always had troubles getting a real good bond on aluminum. So I tried something different this time.
Scuffed the shaft with some 320 emerycloth, then a couple coats of the VHT clear flat. Then glued on with gorilla blue cap. I'll do some testing tomorrow to see how they hold up ;)

Very nice, Clint and Brad.
I haven't been posting much lately, mostly because I've been to 3 different 4 day archery events the past 5 weeks. Here are some pictures.
Those 5 boys spent hours making fires with a fero rod and bow drill. Be nice to be young again..

Nice pictures Roy. What shoots were you at?
-
That's an old bear white knight take down that I bought new in 1973.
Clint, the first 2 were at Pine Hill Sportsman's club in Kennerdell, Pa. The other shoot was the UBP family camp out at Marsh Hill Pa, not far from the New York state line. Awesome mountains up there.

Worked on a 64" zebra bow to check my 40# stack on the TD . It's at 42 right now and still have to shape riser and finish sand it so think I'm on the money!
-
Beautiful country, Roy!
But really, You gonna call those mountains? :)
-
Those were little ones, but no they are not like the rockies.
-
Made a form and glued up a 48/50" x 1" wide kids bow in D/R .
Hoping for about 20@20 but have no clue what I'll get. If it comes in too light I'll send it to
Roy...
-
How did ya come up with the 1" glass?
-
How did ya come up with the 1" glass?
Cause that's all them sissy pants Ohio guys use.. :)
-
I clamped some 2" to the bench with a straightedge and cut it with a utility knife. Worked pretty good. Now if the bow will bend like I want it to starting that narrow.......

Unlike those PA guys who are scared to use glass cuz it makes them itchy.

No
I'am going back to the original design and starting over.
1 piece bow, small handle (riser) more like a selfbow handle.
Going with less thickness taper and narrow limbs.

Max... Looking forward to what you come up with...

Looks good! Cool clamp setup
-
Yeah... Nice Clamp Jig...
-
Think I need to make one of those jigs
-
Awesome jig.
-
Yeah, they are quite handy for this riser part and riser overlay gluing.
At first I was doing this with regular clamps and had many problems with parts sliding around, now it is much more precise, faster and easier.
-
Work on my form more today.
start making lams and riser parts next.
-
Cut and ground lams for 2 bows, laminated a riser, made 2 new jigs for risers, profiled a riser, glued up a set of limbs, and spliced lams for a one piece.
Wheewwwww!!!! Long day !

Drove 250 miles total to find out there was no 8/4 Zebra in store. Bought some other stuff anyway.... :D

I'm sittin in South Carolina with bow season underway and nothing in hand but a fishing rod. Oh, and the fish aren't biting. :(

Well I still got all my fingers and got about 1/3 of my walnut sawed into blanks on the old radial arm saw. Including a couple of real purty crotch pieces. Not sure how sound they are, but should make some nice overlays or handle pieces.

I cleaned up some staves this afternoon. My new pup got her first taste of osage. She would grab a curl and take off with it. When I swept it all in a pile she would jump in and scatter it all around. I'm hoping she will be a good shop dog when she grows up.

Got the first phase of glue up done on a shorty for my nephew in between morning and evening hunts.
Was almost a catastrophe. Had half the lams and the riser coated in glue. Set the riser on the form and was working on smearing up the other half of the lams. That’s when I heard something hit the floor.
That’s right, the riser slid right off the form. Broke about 1/2” off of a fade. Quickly scraped off as much glue off as I could, then wiped down with acetone. Cut the fade off evenly and cut the other to match. Then a quick sand job to thin the fades back down. Didn’t get them as thin as I would have liked, but I put a power lam in so I think I’ll be fine.
-
Yep dont put the riser on there without clamping it down. Those fades will break everytime they hit the floor :(
-
Yep.
-
Sounds like I’m not the first one to have this dumb a** attack. Lol
Got the bow out of the form and cleaned up today. Looks like it will be just fine. Got the handle section (phase two) glued up today.
-
Rookie..LOL

I let an ASL riser get out of my fingers on a belt sander. Was able to recover a 14" riser from an 18". It sits in the shop waiting on its raeson d etre

Knobs showed up for my adjustable height in feed/out feed table I put together for the band saw. Needed something to be up at about 45 inches to meet up with the table of the saw, but I didn’t want some bulky tall thing that took up a lot of space. This table will fold up with loosening of the knobs and folding the legs under the table, leaving you with just the table top to have to hide away when not in use. With the adjustable legs, it can be used for things other than the band saw.

I was getting ready to make up some arrows.
Tried the chopper on a couple and could see the blade needed sharpening again.
Those blades are a pain to sharpen...bendy and ya have to keep the whole edge on the same plane.
I've done it a couple times...just didn't feel like doing it again.
...So I whipped up a burner out of some junk I had laying around.
..didn't have to buy a single new thing.
Works pretty good.
Tried it first without the dimmer switch...wire got so hot the feathers caught fire lol.
So I wired it up so the dimmer varies the power going into the charger.
Works like a charm...but sure as heck doesn't smell like one.
WAY easier than chopping a bunch.
