Title: Natural wood Arrow Shafts in South Florida
Post by: Rowdy Yates on December 26, 2016, 07:36:00 PM
Hi, new here.
Just moved to Fort Myers Florida area and am wondering if anyone know of any sources for natural wood shoots for arrows (besides river cane)
Hoping to find something I can harvest in the area. Not sure what's here yet.

Thanks !
Rowdy

I think ink berry(Ilex glabra) or yaupon(Ilex vomitoria) both native hollies and both used for arrow shafting.

There's a bunch of stuff I haven't identified yet.  There are a ton of bamboo patches in the area, some of which may be Japanese Arrow Bamboo or even Tonkin.  Keep your eyes open.

Inkberry of SOUTH Florida is   scaevola taccada  which does not have straight shoots.

Yaupon again does not grow naturally this far south, but you may find the occasional yard tree.  River Cane does not grow this far south, either -- but as I said above there are LOTS of plantings of dozens of species.

Where are you in Fort Myers?  I live part time downtown in the Fort Myers Yacht Basin, and part time at my Lady's house near the The Bell Tower shopping center
