Hi fellas, I've jus made one of my recurves with a .020 woven carbon back and a 0.040 woven carbon core. I also used a foam core.
Anyway this is a proven design, made with 0.040 glass back and belly, bamboo cores this design shoots at around 190fps @ 10gpp. It is generally easy to get rid of any vibration during tillering and this design is very nicely mannered once tillered BUT this new one with the carbon is definitely a bit 'twangy' upon shooting....it has a buzz which lasts a second or two...even with heavy arrows.
Any ideas anyone?
Do any of you get similar issues with using carbon?

I'm no bowyer but there have been a couple of threads in the PowWow section with shooters noticing the same phenomenon. Either way, very nice performance from that bow!

I've only used the woven carbon on one bow (R/D design and like your's a proven design) and have found it louder and slower than the uni carbon I normally use. As I have no need of extra lateral stability with these bows I don't see me using it again.

My layup with a carbon back is a little different but the bow is scary fast,I got rid of the slight twang with those rubber (wishbone string silencers),at first thought it would reduce speed a bit but not much if any and now it has a low thump sound which is as quite as most others.

I build wood bows, and have shot bows made by Bear, PSE etc, and have witnessed others. Most have that annoying twang after shooting an arrow.
My final verdict, wood is quiet. Others have told told me this shooting side by side.
Is woven carbon any good. I thought Uni directional was best..?

They have different properties to be used in different applications. Unidirectional has the main stiffnes along the length with little lateral stiffness, it also looks just like plain old black glass and a lot of people want the 'look' of woven carbon. If you make most of your stack out of unidirectional then add a thin facing woven later you get the look and the performance. If the full stack is made of woven carbon then it won't have any real resistance to stretching or the strength to take it. However a fully woven stack is perfect for a core lam in that it is pretty stiff laterally and only feels sheer forces. It all depends on how you orientate the fibers during layup and the desired set of properties.
I'm still experimenting and these things take time :)
