Title: Hill style stacks question
Post by: Krasus on October 07, 2016, 12:20:00 AM
My wife wants a bow. Lol I usually make r/d glass backed and have no clue what the stack would be on a hill style for her.  I still want to back with glass.  Any help would be much appreciated.   :archer2:

How long NTN?  How long in the riser?  How wide at the fades?  How wide at the nocks?  Reflexed, flat or string follow?

I was thinking a 35# at 28" and 66" ntn. 14" riser. 1 1/2 " at the fades to 1/2" at the nocks. I can do any taper but I prefer. 001.  Just a flat style no reflex.
I was letting her play around with one of mine and she was loving it. Figure If I made her one I can get away with spending more money on wood lol

I use an 0.005 taper in my 'Hill' bow. I will check the stack for you.

Just my opinion, but I think at 1.5" at the fades, the .001 taper is not enough and .005 too much.

Need to fiddle with my records to come up with anything more.

My last hill had this for a recipe:

The limbs were 1.25 wide at the fade straight taper to .5 tips. I will have to find my copy of the lam stack calculator to do a conversion on what you wanted. But this is a good start. I would think that you would have to be in the .300 range for the poundage your looking for.

Justin, what was your riser length?

with mine with a 16'' riser, and 4 x .001 tapers, limbs 1.125 tapering to .5'' and 66 NTN., wood stack would be around .320 plus
glass add 2 x .030 will give about what you want, if this helps.

Trust me 0.005 is perfect for my hill bow  ;)  I wouldn't have said so otherwise. I've made about 15 or bows off that from. It shoots great with 0.005 taper.
I haven't had a chance to check my stack info yet.

I absolutely don't doubt that at all, but was considering In the context of his 1.5" width at the fades.  A true "hill style" is going to be about 1.125 at the fades and about .5  at the tips which would work pretty well with your .005, IMO.  But, just my opinion.  I have not built any true Hill style bows so my opinion should be considered carefully.   :)

When I build an ASL it has a riser 14" to 18" long, is a full 1.5" at the fades (not so much as.05 under) 66" to 70" NTN, tips at .3 to .35 wide, limb remaining a full 1.5" for two inches beyond the fades and from there following an ever of a circle to the tips.  No tip wedge.  That formula uses a total thickness taper of .002.

Explaining that just to clarify where I'm coming from with my thoughts on this.

His thoughts on the dimensions with .001 taper and .5" tips seems like it might need more taper.

OTOH, if he used his planned dimensions altering his tips to narrow points he would be headed towards a pyramid.  The .001 taper would provide protection from set at the fades but would probably benefit from a tip wedge.

I'm probably way over thinking this!

So I was able to get another copy of the stack calculator and based on my previous post you should need a stack at .430 total. That would be for 35#@28 inch draw.

Depending on what you wanted to run you could do somthing like this:

.05 glass x 2
.025 veneer x2
.100 taper core at .002 x 2 sets
.08 taper core at .001 1 set

This would be a taper rate of .005

That would be a ball park if you made it the way that I have made my bows in the past.

Hope this helped ya.
