Title: Koa Hill Style Finished
Post by: typical2 on August 05, 2016, 06:40:00 PM
I have a friend that is a knife maker.  His favorite wood (most days) is koa and I don't blame him.  He is making me a knife so I wanted to make him a bow.  I found a nice koa riser block on the big auction site and some koa veneer from veneersupplies.com.

I decided to go with walnut for the cores.  I love the way it looks and performs.

I finally got the time to glue it up last night.  Total stack - .65" with a .010"/" taper.

The bow is 69" ntn

As I peeled the tape off this morning it felt like Christmas morning and I really liked what I saw.

After rough cutting out the profile the bow was initially quite heavy.  70 some pounds at 26".  Not the low 50s at 28 like I was hoping for.

However, I started a bit wide and after slimming it down to just under 1.1" at the fades and .4 at the tips it was down to the mid 60s.  I really do like to round the limbs significantly but I thought it would still be tough to get the bow to its target weight.  This kind of pleased me though.  Maybe this means I get to keep it

I like it! I also like Koa and have a few chunks I picked up a our "Woodworkers Source" store. The wood came from Gibson Guitars. Hoping someday to have a riser made from it.

It's not perfect but I love how it turned out.  Just feel a bit silly covering up this wood with leather!

Thanks guys.

I like the look on the belly side of the shelf too and try to cut the shelf there by design

Hi Typical2, may be a stupid question but did you use glass over the back an belly of this bow?
Title: Re: Koa Hill Style Finished
Post by: typical2 on September 06, 2016, 04:44:00 PM
Yes there is clear glass on the back and the belly.
