Title: 2 piece build
Post by: Wolftrail on July 28, 2016, 12:12:00 PM
I'm in the process of building a two peice bow having a hinge.  I have #10 machine screws 4 in total, so 2 on each hinge half. What kind of inserts should I use..?  Somewhat of a dilema because the hinge is 6" long, the outside screw would be going into the ramp portion of the handle.
This is a laminated maple bow with a 4 1/2" handle.

I would look for brass inserts and use bolts, not screws.

Can you cut off the hole and drill a hole where you want it?

#10-24 and 10-32 Machine screw are bolts pearly   :)

I would never use #10 screws on a 3 piece, I use 5/16" bolts but I think it would suffice on the hinge.

"Can you cut off the hole and drill a hole where you want it?"
Dont get your drift on that statement Mark.?

My other option would be to use wood screws on the outside holes.

Other question where would more pressure be exerted on the screws,  the ones near the hinge or the outers.

Correct Mark, 10-24 and 10-32 are fine thread bolts, he mentioned using #10 screws. I said I would use bolts, not screws. I don't trust screws for much of anything except holding deck boards down on my patio  :)

Cut the hinge shorter so It's not 6" long, then drill a new hole in the hinge where you want it.
10-24 and 10-32 (machine) screws ARE BOLTS

For the record in Canada anything smaller than 1/4" we call SCREWS.  I will not drill new holes in these hinges they are stainless marine grade heavy duty cost $15 ea. and the pre-drilled holes in the hinge are tapered.   No sweat I'll just fill in the holes on the belly side with wood plugs and Bob's your uncle.
