-
Sweet. Glue up on sat!
-
Awesome I have my victims name. Now time to plan it out.
-
I'm fired up..
I have a stash of materials ready to go..
They tell me there is some amazing figure in these rare, imported hardwood planks.
I just need to have patience.. I read somewhere on the internet to "follow the grain"..
Might work out...

Well, at least one piece is bug free...
Dave.
-
Got to stripping word off cherry stave tonight. Will decrown the stave tomorrow and get it ready for backing with rawhide and tillering.
-
Pathfinder - have you been at my wood stash!?!
-
I am thinking of doing something a bit different for this year. How does a glass laminated selfbow style sound? I.E. clear glass, lams and riser cut from the same wood, and horn or antler tips. What do y'all think?
-
Mikkekeswick..
I guess we have similar taste in scrounging and scrap collecting!
-
Sounds awesome Dave, send it my way!
-
Delongyboy, you back a selfbow with glass and you will be banned from my bow shop,BOY....
-
Jeez Roy...a little bit of glass never killed anybody. You'll still let me in if I bring some refreshments right???
-
Oh I suppose.. :)
-
Fwiw, whoever got my name, I'm not picky. Mine doesn't have to be a self bow. I just thought something other than glass would be cool. Build whatever your comfortable with!
I'm still stalking my victim and trying to come up with a plan!!
-
Thanks in advance to my builder. Please remember to mark package as gift when you eventually ship.
I'm still in planning stage for my recipient.
-
I just finished ordering some goodies from Big Jim for my swap bow. Now back to planning the bow. What looks good with osage in a riser and as a core in a tri-lam?
I saw some punky spruce at work yesterday... ;)
Dave.
-
Got 4 staves ready to floor tiller, 1 osage, 1 hackberry, 1 hophornbeam, and an elm. I'm leaning toward the hackberry, it has about 4 inches of natural reflex. Thinking about heating in some deflex and adding sinew to help hold the deflex. Never used much sinew though so we'll see.
-
Laid out some of my materials today, trying to put my plan together.
I think I'm gonna do a 2-pc for my recipient. I've been wanting one for awhile, but it's probably best I try it out on some sucker first...
Going to try the fiberglass sleeve method. I think I'm going to make my first attempt with just a mocked up riser out of crap wood. Then move to a real bow after working through the bugs.
-
Got mine ready for limb tip overlays and the short string this morning.
-
since we (me) have long time i start with ash tree this year. i know it is very strong wood and can make a good bow... this will be self bow.
any tips would be nice if you have experience with it.
it this does not work out, i will use maple. :D
roy: what is wrong with a glass backing? i did it before and works perfect...
best.
-
Nothing really Inksoup. Glass works just fine. It's just friendly joking between wood and glass builders. No harm intended.
-
Ill be cutting lams this weekend and running them through the sander.
-
One thing folks if you are a veteran at this let me know if you are building for someone you have built for. I will do a switch for that.
Looks like folks are pumped up and ready to go.
-
Got some figured purpleheart planed for a riser and lams this morning before work.
-
...and inksoup, don't let Roy fool ya...he likes glass too :-D
-
Heck Roy already makes glass bows he just for gets to add it. I am fortune enough to have one of his BBO.
-
Got the hackberry bow floor tillered, hope to get the nocks filed in tomorrow and on the long string. Once I get it bending evenly on the tree I plan to heat in some deflex to off set all the natural reflex.
-
Spent some time shooting in my recipients bow today! Kinda sad to see this one go.
-
Darn it ....looks like i missed the signup :readit:
-
Wow ewokarcher. Your on the ball.
-
Are we posting the pictures of them in this forum? What's the plan? I guess I need to set up a photo bucket or something

Yes, post some pics up as you go.
Man I better get on the ball. I just need to order me some more smooth on and decide if my victim would like a r/d longbow or my new recurve.
-
Yep pictures are highly encouraged. Just don't post the finished showing who it is for.
-
I'm waiting on the mail for some supplies. :(
Dave.
-
This swap reminds me of the time I was stalking a good eatin size hog when all of a sudden a boar about 400 lbs stood up and faced me at 25 yrds. I suddenly felt small and inadequate!! Well, I've stalked my victim and I feel completely inadequate! But I'm gonna let er rip and see what happens!!

Ain't no one gonna believe you otherwise...

Got to take some pics of the bow at robbers cave state park, Oklahoma this weekend.
64 inches ttt, about 65# here at 28 with me drawing it (Im struggling if you can't tell)
(http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w466/tyrelljrutledge/Mobile%20Uploads/20160205_155035_zpsto7ysgv1.jpg) (http://s1077.photobucket.com/user/tyrelljrutledge/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20160205_155035_zpsto7ysgv1.jpg.html)
This is my first FG bow so it is really hard to let this go. I've been shooting it daily the last 2 weeks and im loving it.
-
-
I had originally planned on making an osage recurve for my recipient, however I got his stats shortly after this was complete and they matched this bow perfectly, I felt like it was bow fate.

-
your recipient should be stoked with that bow, very nice. I can understand your reluctance to let it go!
-
Very nice! Great job!
-
Thanks guys, Im excited to see what everyone cones up with next.
Kelly I'll pm you to confirm when I have shipped, it's gonna be next week. I've gotta make the rounds at our local range with this before I can give it up.
-
Nice bow, but is it allowed to be done so quickly. ;) ;)
-
Very nice..
-
-
Nice looking stick Ewok!!!
-
Ewok,
That is one fine looking bow, think I would love it if it comes my direction.
That said, I don't know that if it was me, that I could part with my first one. I still have my first selfbow, BBO, and glass recurve and longbow.
-
Beautiful work Ewok! Love that red!
Haven't even started planning mine yet. Garage has been too cold. I have the next couple days off work but the high is forcasted to be around 15, so probably wait another week. Need to look through my wood and glass stack and see what I have.
-
Just finished gluing mine up on the stat long weekend we just had. Wenge riser with a mosaic (African ebony, bloodwood and maple). Limbs are Shedua Ovangkol with a hickory core. I'm going to do a overlay of bloodwood over my lam seams. I used clear glass. For the tips I'm thinking of using more African ebony and some kind of contrast.
I'll get some pics up once I'm a little further alo ng. :)
-
EwokArcher ship to your bowyer anytime you want just PM me the tracking number and I will mark you as shipped.
-
got my material in this week, this bow is going to be a shedua riser with padauk and black glass accents with bocote limbs, got a little done this evening I plan to glue up this weekend if all goes well
(http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j28/Peanut39350/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_1250_zps0cpnksfu.jpg) (http://s76.photobucket.com/user/Peanut39350/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_1250_zps0cpnksfu.jpg.html)
-
I got most all my material in for my victims bow. I am going with zebra wood riser with a Macassar Ebony I beam, cedar veneers with actionboo core and red accent stripe in limbs. The only thing I got left to find is what material I want to use for the tips. Hopefully my victim likes this combo.
-
Well the glass folks are off and running for sure. there is some sweet bows in the mix. I like it.
-
Been working on several, will see which is the best to send to my recipient. The hackberry came in at the bottom end of the desired weight, but seems to shoot fairly well. I think I'll take an inch or so off of the limbs to gain a little of the weight back. The osage is tillered to 22" so far and looking good, still holding around 2" of reflex. Hope to get both bows shooting next week sometime. I also have an elm and a hophornbeam roughed out as a plan C & D just in case.
-
Any recommendations on shipping a 64" bow within the states?
-
I have used carpet tube (free at most carpet places) , wrap bow in saran wrap, then bubble wrap or newspapers. Ship USPS Priority. If you go to USPS site and make an account, you can print your label and save a few bucks on shipping.
I have shipped this way for as little as 10-12 bucks in nearby zones, plus a bit of insurance.
-
Like Kenny, for years when shipping longbows I used the carpet tubes with round plywood inserts screwed and taped into place, they worked fine until...............the USPS crushed the carpet tube and broke a bow. Of course the USPS said it was packaged wrong and refused to pay the $900 it was insured for. There went 30 hours of my time and $150 in materials to make the customer another bow. Now the shipping cost is include as part of the original sales price. It hurts to send out a 1K item and not have it protected as much as reasonably possible.
For longbows I now use schedule 40 PVC with a glued and taped end cap on one end, and a screw in cap with a holding screw and tape on the other end. In addition, I take several pictures of it with my cell phone while it is on the USPS or UPS scale to prove how it was packaged. All total, with the PVC tube, PVC parts, shipping, and insurance, it usually costs between $40-50 every time I sell and ship a longbow. Take down longbows are shipped the same way.
For one piece and take down recurves I build a box out of 1 ½’ x 2” fir, 3/8” plywood, and torx wood crews. The inside is padded with bubble wrap/foam and the bow is inside of a bow sock. The plywood box actually cost less to make but takes more time to make. All said, the cost is about a wash with the PVC.
-
Ouch Walt, never had any trouble but I'm taking notes!!
-
I've had two broken in shipping with card board tubes. PVC all the time now plus insurance..
-

They probably would have broke anyways!!!
-
PVC for me too. I work with UPS and USPS a lot in my business. Trust me you need all the protection you can get!
-
Wrap her up well and pray!
I've had 'issues' in the past as well. If you start thinking I wonder if this bow is protected well enough....it isn't!

I was thinking the same thing!

Worked on the osage bow today, got it pulling to 25". I'm right on target weight at 25". I also shot a few arrows through it at about 22" or so and it seems to be a smooth shooting bow so far. Hope to finish tillering this week, then start shooting it in before it gets all fancied up.
-
Said I would get a pic up.
(After photo)Just finished cutting my taper on the limbs. Next sanding to my final lines :)
-
That bow is looking good Krasus.
I finally got to do a little work on the riser block for my victims bow. glued up today. I glued up the Zebrawood with a strip of Macassar Ebony on the inside. Tomorrow I can work on cutting the riser out.
-
Got my riser glued up and cut out hadn't had a chance to glue my bow yet been out of town hope to do it this weekend
-
Krasus, really like the wood combo on that one, can't wait to see it finished.
-
Thanks! I'm really trying to bring my A game to the swap. Skipping out of work tomorrow. Gonna work ib it some more. Lol love sick days
-
I've decided to switch gears...might build my first Hill style for the swap. I have some nice double tapered bamboo lams that will be perfect. Can't seem to decide which way to go....
-
Who knew Roy was gonna spend the entire time of his recovery torturing people
-
Have the osage bow tillered to 27",still holding an inch or so of natural reflex so far, only a few to go. Hope to finish tillering tomorrow.
I'll throw this out there to see if my recipient replies. How should I finish the bow??? Timber Rattler (no matched pieces), cherry bark, or a good stain job?
-
Dan if it's was up to me I would go with a good stain job.
-
Cherry bark sounds cool. So does rattler skins.
Dave.
-
Well it is coming along nicely.
-
Rattler backed with accent stains.
-
Something just sounds sexy about Osage backed with snake skins! But I'd be happy with any of the above!
-

Well, you know ... retirement hasn't been kind to old Roybert and it's hard to be a top notch greeter these days with a bum shoulder. So I figure he's just burning off a little frustration.

-
That hat is funky too, he needs to turn it bout a quarter turn....
-
LOL
-
I've seen that pic somewhere before. ;)
-
You go cowgirl.. :)
-
Yeeee Haaaaa!
-
Glued on my overlay and tip overlays today. I'll post pic once I sand extra epoxy off. Want to see if my math was right or if the poundage is way out to lunch.
-
Well at least this time Roy had his walmart vest on in that one.
Man I like cherry bark my self. I have snake backed bows but Cherry that is rare and looks great.
But any snake looks good on Osage. From black snake to boa.
I think my favorite is corn then bull on it though. The lighter colors really pop on that orange wood. Copperheads are just to short most of the time.
-
I can't tell if he's trying to hold his pants up or if he's flexing!
-
Don't make me post the hog picture.. :)
-
I picked up some Pvc pipe today, should be shipping in the next few days
-
got mine glued up this past weekend and roughed out this evening after work

And the first bow is one its way. so let the front porch watching begin.
-
Thats great. Things seem to be moving faster this year.
I better get my butt in gear. Got my woods picked out, and my lams ground, so i guess it wont be long now.
Ill be watching my front door closely.
-
finished up with my build it turned out pretty good I hope the recipient is pleased with it

That's a great looking bow!!
-
That looks great! I love the woods.
Dave.
-
Very nice looking bow.
-
x2 what others have said, great wood combo and nice looking bow.
-
Ill take that any day.
Nice work.
-
Getting ready to put tip overlays on the osage bow that I've been working on. Will be trying black mesquite to see how that looks. If I don't like it I'll grind off and use some bocote or cocco.
-
Ugghhh. Poundage way under. Time to start over. :(
-
use that stack calculator- now that you have a starting point.
-
Lol right! Good thing I keep a diary of each bow I make. Which stack calculator would you recommend using Wayne?

-
Looks good Peanut
-
Sweet thanks Wayne! Buying new glass tommorow!
-
good luck mate- up side is you now have an extra bow around the house!
-
Came home to a nice mild r/d longbow today. Black glass with a nice reddish orange riser...maybe jatoba or padauk??? Didn't have any daylight left to test it out...but I'm sure it will perform as good as it looks. Hopefully I will get off work before dark tomorrow so I can shoot! Thanks Ty!!!!!
-
You are welcome! It is padauk. I love that bow, I hope it serves you well! I dragged my feet for about 2 weeks before finally shipping it lol.
-
And like that we have our first one complete we are 4.55% complete.
-
The black mesquite tip overlays turned out well, got them all shaped and sanded out.
Put about 40 arrows through it this morning, and put some backings on it to dress it up a little. Should be ready to start finish sometime next week.
-
Finished up bow for my victim a couple weeks ago, have been shooting it in, haven't got finished pics yet, but here are a couple roughed pics.
(http://i1075.photobucket.com/albums/w439/jomohr84/Mobile%20Uploads/20160209_085426.jpg) (http://s1075.photobucket.com/user/jomohr84/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20160209_085426.jpg.html)

First time laminating curved accent into a riser, didn't quite turn out how I was picturing, but I learned from it. 50#@28", and shoots sweet for me, very little hand shock. Heat treated this one before tillering, I usually heat treat near final tiller. Didnt really notice any difference. Spar urethane over Massey finish, leather arrow strike plate, B55 string. Will try to get final pics soon and get materials for shipping. Think I'm gonna ship it in pvc. I have a cardboard tube, but think I remember a few ppl saying bows got damaged in cardboard tubes.
-
Here are a few finished pics

-
wow... that's good bow... thank you doing it for me :D
-
Not so fast ink, looks perfect for me too.
-
:clapper: That is SWEET looking, CONGRATS :shaka:
-
Well some nice work going on for sure.
And just because it is 50#@28 does not mean it is not for a 45#@27 or a 55#@29
-
Nice looking bow Jonathan, looks like a real sweet shooter.
A few more coats of finish, a handle wrap, and shoot it some more, then I'll be ready to ship.
-
I have been fighting some bad sinus and allergies this past week. Finally felt like getting out to the shop today and getting my bow glued up. Now hopefully I calculated the stack right and the bow will be in the weight range my victim wanted. This is only the second bow on my new design so we shall see.
-
Went to the shop today and got my bow out of the form. I cleaned the bow buggers off it and got the limbs cut to length. Now to relay the lines back on the bow and start shaping the limbs out. I think this bow will be at the max weight my victim wants possibly a little over their weight they specified. Here is a pic of where I am at right now on the bow.
-
Just saying I'd happily get stronger for a bow like that lol
-
I wouldent have a problem with that either.
-
I could handle a little more weight also for that one.
-
I never really care too much about the weight, my bows range from 32# to 60#, they're all fun.
Just ordered some tri-lam supplies, will update when its glued up.
-
KennyM might be able to draw back that 32 pounder... :) Send me the 60 pounder...
-
Roy I bet your PT would love that lol
-
LOL....
-

I can draw a hunnert pounder, just not very far.
Bet Roy can too!
-
LOL, Roy better not even lift that bow
-
How's the shoulder coming along Roy, haven't heard any updates lately?
Finish is almost complete on mine, need a coat of spray on poly to take the shine off and a handle wrap yet to finish it up. Will get some pics up as soon as I get it done.
-
Surgery was 6 weeks ago this past Wednesday, seen doctor Tuesday and had PT same day. Doctor said I'm doing well and I now am allowed to raise my arm up as to draw a bow back. I gave it a shot and my arm came right up with no pain or problems. That's the first time I could raise my arm since last August. Put a smile on my face... But I have to be careful not to lift anything heavy for at least 6 weeks yet. Then I can begin lifting a little weight to regain strength. Looking at 3 more months till I can shoot.
-
Well, Roy, I'd be happy to whip up a poplar bow for you it would get you started! :biglaugh:
-
Roy does your wife hold your beer for you? LOL Am glad you're healing well, prayer continue
-
My ex-girlfriend had shoulder surgery from a climbing accident it took a lot of rehab but she got back all her strength and mobility. Stick with it Roy and do physio exercises until you are sick of them and don't push anything too soon. Good luck to ya!
-
Thanks guys..
Monterey, make it 20#. :)
-
Roy, Glad to hear you're getting some movement and strength back, always a good sign.
-
You'll be swinging that ole thumpin stick pretty soon it think.
Dave.
-
Thanks Dave, I think. LOL :)
-
Made up a new string and put the writing on mine tonight, tomorrow I'll cut some silencers from a mink I tanned last year, shoot it some more then it's ready to ship.
-
Mink makes great silencers.
-
Wow, haven't tuned in for awhile and things are moving. I've got a bow for my victim glued up and roughed. Time to cut it in half and see if I can put it back together again.
-
Roy it use to be mink silenced women or something like that or thats what men thought
-
Now it's diamonds and gold jewelry, Ben... :)
-
Horn chaser looks like a great start I bet a bit heavy is fine for most.
Roy glad to hear you are getting well. Heck requesting your hunting weight bows this early might not be good. I mean 20# that was the top of your request if I remember right.
:biglaugh:
-
Last year my uncle gave me a 25 inch drum sander. Today was the firt time i used it. Grinding lams. All i could think was... Where has this thing been my whole life. I love it.
So, i got my lams finished up, and my riser glued, and cut out. Wont be long now before i have a bow for my guy.
-
Finally got the pics of my bow uploaded, lots of problems with photobucket. So here we go, it's osage, 65" ttt, somewhere between 40 an 80# at 28", timber rattler skins, with black mesquite tip overlays. I'll let the recipient do the full draw shot.

Wow.. Dan made a great looking stick for someone!..
-
Well It's right handed, so there's a chance It could be mine! :biglaugh:
Very very nice bow!!! Well done sir! Your recipient will be proud!!
-
I finally got my riser cut out and sanded. Osage and pau ferro. I hope my victim will like it. It's the first time I used smooth on and a glass I beam. The bandsaw blade screamed like a banshee going through that stuff.
Dave.
-
Very nice, Dan..
-
Nice job Dan!!
Dave, that was a death cry from the blade....
-
Yeah, I'm now the proud owner of a fiberglass only blade. :) It was a dull one anyway. I have another for wood cutting only.
Nice looking bow Dan! I got called away earlier and hit post before I was really done.
Dave.
-
WOW... I love that bow, praying it finds its way to me.
-
Thanks guys for all the good comments, hope my recipient likes it also. Will most likely ship sometime this week.
-
That's a great looking bow Dan.
-
Dan... this is lovely...
-
Dan I love it. I think I sent you the wrong Address. I think I drew your name for me LOL.
-
Thanks again for the comments guys.
Kelly, You wouldn't want to get a bow this early on, and spoil all that anticipation would you?
-
Very nice bow Dan.
I just finally got another day off work and able to work on my victims bow. It was 15 lbs over what they requested so I put the bow on a diet :) . I narrowed the bows width from 1.5 inches wide to its now 1.25 width. After that the bow is about 5 lbs to heavy still but after final sanding it won't be much over the requested weight. I was worried about losing stability in the limbs narrowing them that much on the recurve design but it is still pretty stable. In fact I think it helped boost the performance in the design. Going to sand on it some more and take it out to the shop tomorrow and see how it performs on the chronograph.
-
Got some more work done sanding the bow and got it to my victims specs on weight today. After getting the weight on the bow took it out and tested it on the chrono . I was shooting a 502 grain arrow and getting 175 fps out of the bow.
I need to do a little more sanding and shaping on the riser as it continues to come along nicely now. When I get the bow finished sanding I will be using some of this rat rod auto urethane to protect the bow.

Had to start over. My # was way under. Just finished shaping the new riser and have taper ground the new limbs. Almost ready for new glue up. New bow is a solid paduk riser with vg clear maple for the limbs. Prob going to put black glass on it to help contrast the color.
-
Ok I got word that another one hit the mail. Pics are slow this year but they are getting shipped.
Oh and that means you have a7% chance of getting a bow very soon.
-

Spalted Maple.

My wife just called and said "what did you order this time?"
I quickly ran a list of possibilities thru my mind and said "nothin I can think of, why?"
Apparently there's a long tube with my name on it sitting in my garage! :bigsmyl:
-
So what.... LOL
-
So What did he get?
Also I know another bow went out today.
-

-
You lucky critter you! That things a beaut!
-
I need to get some practice in so I can join in next year!
-
Very nice...
-
Congrats, that's a nice one.
-
well that is 2 happy folks 2 still in the mail. so we are just under 10% done.
-
I love the excitement of a new bow! Congrats and great job Dan!
-
Randy, glad it arrived in one piece. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did making it.
-
Well I've been pretty absent from this swap so far, but I'm getting ready to start on my recipient's bow. I have some nice coco and bocote, and one riser blank glued up already but I'm not sure if I'll use it. Its a flared riser with paduk and maple. I also have some green glass that I may use.
Whats ya'll take on a bocote riser with green glass limbs? Or maybe ebony and bocote under clear? I can't decide. I also have a couple pieces of purple heart I can use for accents. Whats your opinion? (I'm not so secretly hoping my victim will chime in) :coffee:
-
I'm a wood guy, so if I'm given a choice, it's veneer under clear glass. :)
Ebony and bocate.... oh yeah! :archer:
Dave.
-
I agree with Dave, clear glass & veneers, then again I wouldn't be disappointed with green glass either.
-
I am with the other guys clear glass and veneers
-
The clear sounds best to me
-
as long as you are happy i am happy :D
-
Bocote and green would look sick! Nice Look.
-
Thanks for the feedback guys! Still mulling around ideas though. I wonder if the coco and green would look good?
At any rate, I need to finish up this dining table first, and it'll be another week before I put the last coat on that. Then I can start making sawdust again :)
-
I've got some ideas forming now....
Bocote and ebony would be v.nice. Coco and bocote gives a great contrast too. I've made a couple with that combo before :)
-
Joe,
I don't know about cocobolo first-hand, but I believe it would look great. I do know it looks good with bocate.

-
Wow you changed my mind that does look awesome. I wouldn't have guessed it.
-
Either way would look good but the green glass looks retro cool.
-
I'm leaning toward green glass and bocote. Maybe a red/black accent? Or maybe throw in some of this ebony. Idk. I've done bocote with coco before - that really pops too. I found a piece of paduk I can use for an accent too. Too many options. I still have to wait till I finish this table before I can make any sawdust in the shop anyway, so I've still got time to decide :)
-
Got a package waiting at the post office from Minnesota. Think it's a bow!. I'll know tommorow by 1pm pst.
-
Please post us some pics asap!
-
Well what was it?
-
Got a new bow! Thanks Johnathan! !

-
I like the white glass look!
-
Nice work thus far on the white beauty!
-
WOW!!! That white glass looks great. Where are you getting that from mate?
Dan
-
I get it from OMC Bowyer supplies out of the state's. They got the best selection of colored glass I've come across. It's all Gordons glass too. There website doesn't show it but you can get red from them too.
-
i have started to play with my acacia woods... shaped and joined the limbs. make interesting nocks as well :D
probably i will back it with glass just to be stay in safe side.
i will post the pictures when take any...
-
That white glass is sexy.
-
Thanks Krasus, I'll definately check them out.

best.

Sorry guys, have been missing for a long time. Bow is in the works, another hickory backed trilam. Will have the limbs evened up tonight and then have to make some decisions about adding weight. Working with a bow that needed to be lightened up and so will add a new backing to it or belly lams. Have done this before and bow came out real nice. Need to get working on it as I'm currently looking for a new job and a relocation to probably an apartment and will have limited access to my workshop.
-
Ink I don't see any pictures. It's has seemed to slow some.
-
Ink I'm not seeing pics either.

I'm excited to see what that turns into sir
-
well i hope it will turn into a bow :D
-
Wow, I've been feeling bad that I've been largely absent this swap. But logging in to check on progress, it looks like almost everyone is in the same boat. Not much happening, and we're getting closer to the end now than the beginning.
My bow is still glued up and shaped, but not much else has happened to it. I was hoping to make it a two piece; but just in case life doesn't ease up soon, my back up plan is to not to.
-
I'm in the same boat. Been slammed with work. But things are begining to slow down. I just finished up one for my buddy so I'm putting together a plan for my swap bow. I'm pretty sure I'll make the deadline!
-
I've been crawling along too. I finally have all the parts for mine ready for glue up. I'm hoping to tiller it this weekend.
Dave.
-
What is the 'close date' again?
-
I've got my victim's bow all glued up and managed to get the overlays on yesterday. Gonna get her shooting tomorrow. I tried a little different recipie from what I normally use and came in a few pounds under weight and had to pike it a bit, which I suppose is okay. I'm still a couple pounds under my recipient's low weight, so I just want to check and see if my guy chimes in -- does anyone care if it's a couple pounds under? I personally don't, but some guys might.
If that's the case I'll build another and keep this for myself.
I haven't taken any pictures yet, but will tomorrow after I get her rough shaped. For anyone that's wondering, I went with bocote and purple heart riser, green glass, and action-boo limb cores with osage tip wedge. I'm really hoping she'll shoot as well as I think she will!
-
I have no problems if a bow was a bit under, or over my weight.
Sounds like a nice bow. I can't wait to see pictures.
Dave.
-
Same here no problems if its a little under
-
Okay, as promised, here's pictures.

As you can see I still have quite a bit of sanding and some fine tuning on the shaping. Hopefully be ready for finish by tomorrow. I have the day off and all the honey-do's are done for the week, so I should have all day to spend in the shop.
-
Doesn't matter to me if it comes in light, light bows are still fun to shoot :archer2:
-
Light is good. Looks nice, green is my favorite glass.
-
-
Light bows are definitely fun to shoot!
-
no problem for me too...
-
Looks good Joe.
-
Wouldnt bother me any... Lokks good.
-
That's awesome
-
Ok remember new folks and late shippers last year the deadline is the end of next month.
vets in good standing is the month after.
Light is good so I would take it.
-
Lighter is ok with me. Looks good!
-
Swap bow's all glued up. Fingers crossed, first time using smooth on.
That stuff is a lot harder to use than TB3.
I hope that there's a bow under all those clamps tomorrow!
Dave.
-
Note To My Bow Maker:
i will be moving from my address like in 1 or 1 and a half month time.
so if you finished the bow please ship in this week, or wait until i get moved and give you my new address...
shipping from US to TR takes little less than 3 weeks, so i do not want to miss this bow or look custom to custom.
if you have read this notice, please knock the table 3 times :D or Kelly please be sure that he/she has read this...
thanks in advance...
further note: i have applied a finish on my victim's bow and waiting for it to dry out. before that i have shot nearly 50 arrows with it. when it is dry, i will make final touches and ship it this week or next.
-
I got my swap bow out of the clamps and cleaned off the glue booggers, tape and plastic wrap. What a mess. The bow looks really good, though and now I've started tillering. Some epoxy got past the painters tape, but I found that it doesn't stick too well to bamboo rind. :)
Dave.
-
finally i got some pictures...

Very unique design on the handle Ink, how is two piece handle made, and what are the limb laminations made from? Looks nice!!!
-
here is the latest image from my swap bow...
i do not people around here to take a picture with full draw sorry...
re: Dan:
thx...
from back to belly
thin layer of fiber glass (which is just cross hatched fibers)
thin layer of maple
and acacia at belly.
you can say, acacia is backed with maple and glass.
to make it 2 piece long bow i cut it half with diagonal shape.
only on upper limp i have wrapped the plastic (not to let epoxy stick on handle wood) and after that i wrapped with epoxy and fiber glass (again with cross hatched) several times. after a curing the epoxy i filed it, sanded it and wrapped with hemp robe then apply the finish.
i will ship this tomorrow to its new owner. i hope you like it owner :D

-
Oh Ink PM me your new address.
-
I shipped mine back in February.
-
Yes I have you down as shipped I just sorted my spread sheet by the date need to be shipped. Then copied it on over to here. So I have you, Peanut and Jomahr84 as shipped. Just putting a reminder out.
-
Hey all. Got back from our first family vacation the other day and getting back at it. Started spraying the final coats on today. I've got a couple hazy spots I may need to sand out and re-do, but hopefully I'll still be done and get her shipped by Tuesday. I gotta say, I love the green glass! I'll get some pics up when she's done. How's everyone else doing? Not a whole lotta updates here lately.
-
Had a few issues. 1st bow came out way under but I was able to give it to my sister in law when her dad died. The second attempt ended up being bought as a retirement gift for a friend of mine. Started number 3 lol. A footed riser of lace wood with blood wood accents. Limbs will be maple but not sure about glass color. But it will ship by the dead line! :)
-
I'm about 85% done now, I have the bow done just have to sand and add some coats of clear and it will be ready to ship.
Dan
-
Bow is glued up will be tillering tomorrow.
-
Sorry it as been a while since I updated my progress. I needed to take a little break from bow building. I have my victims bows almost finished. All I like is spraying the finish and she will be ready to go out. I will post some pictures after spraying the finish.
-
I'm havnt even started yet. Been working on a buddy's bow. I'll be ordering a riser block next week for my victims bow. I've got everything else I need. I'm confident I'll make the deadline. I've got some AWESOME veneers from Big Jim I was saving for me a bow but I figured id quit being selfish and let my victim have them!!
-
Glued up yesterday. I'll pop it out of the form tonight.
-
I've been working on my swap bow. Trying to reduce weight. It came in too heavy.
Dave.
-
Hi all....
Worked on my bow this weekend, but it delaminated at the fade. I will have to start again.
Thanks
Peter
-
Built a new hot box, materials ready to go, going to glue up soon.
-
I got off work early today so I put my swap bow on a severe diet. I sharpened up my scraper and worked the edges until it lost most of the excess weight. It still needs to lose some more weight, but I'm getting close. I got it to brace height and it looks good to my eye. One more major step in this build, and if I don't mess it up, I'll be happy with it.
Dave.
-
I'd be happy with a heavier or lightweight bow.
-
i said before, my specs are not sharp. it can be heavier or lighter.
as long as maker is happy i am happy.
best.
-
A little heavier is fine with me also.
-
Weight is not important to me. No worries here if it is lighter or heavier.
-
actually i really would like to have too heavy bow for fun.
wood carver: if it is not mine, can you please consult to kellyg for if it is possible to switch the victims? :D
btw: kelly: i was not able to ship the bow yet. it is still in fethiye that is my previous town. i will be shipping in a week, since i will back in old town next week. sorry for delay but it was not my hand.
best.
-
I've been having trouble with finish curing on this bocote in the riser. Haven't had this much trouble before. I'm using a spray poly now, but I just put in an order with Big Jim for some Krystal. Hopefully that will work a bit better. I think having it catalyze versus having to cure over the oily wood should help.
Does anyone have experience with Krystal finish? Mind giving me some pointers before I start? The bow is all done -- I've just been waiting for about 4 weeks for this poly to "set", but nothing is changing, so I am. Sorry to my victim. You should've had your bow by now. I'll make sure I shoot it a bunch for you before I ship :)
-
If I'm working with oily wood I put on a base coat of shellac as it isn't affected by oily wood. It dries quick then I can use whatever finish I want.
-
I use shellac as a base coat as well. Krystal will go over it with no problem and is a fast drying durable finish.
-
I use krystal that i got from big jim look on page 7 of this topic and you can see my victims bow that was sprayed with krystal
-
Shellac is your best friend. :)
-
sounds like a lot of bows getting worked on. 10 days folks till the first dead.
-
Sounds like I need some shellac. Thanks a bunch guys! I appreciate the help.
-
Like everyone else, life is crazy at the moment but will have a bow in the mail by the end of the week.
-
Kelly, how many bows are still not sent?
-
I'm doing final shaping on riser tomore after work then final sand hopefully on wed. Then spray finish and should be done!
-
Here is a look at my trade bow I just finished. Hope my victim likes it. Southern red cedar veneers, zebra wood riser with Macassar ebony ibeam. I plan to ship this one out next week. I have family coming in for a wedding this weekend and plan to show it off before sending it out.

-
Talkingcabbage, I have used Zinsser "bullseye" dewaxed shellac in the spray can from Lowe's over cocobolo and Rosewoods then Spar urethane on top.. But now I spray Krystal Dull or Gloss over oily woods, so far no problems, finish is dry in 30 minutes..but best to give it an hour before touching it.
-
Horn chaser that is a good looking bow i hope its coming to Mississippi
-
Sorry Peanut, I think it's coming to PA, good looking bow!!
-
That is a sick looking static recurve, someone is going to very happy with that one
-
Very nice recurve!
-
hmmm... do not get so jelaous about my bow please :D hahahha
-
Finished shaping the riser and did my first sanding to remove tool marks. Final sanding tonight. Then into the spray booth!. :)
-
Nice curve! Hope it's Iowa bound!
I just got a shipping notice on the Krystal from Big Jim so hopefully the bow should be finished by the weekend and I'll ship it beginning of next week. Ready to get her done and out to her new owner.
-
Just put the snake skin on my recipients bow. will put finsh on this weekend.

The bows look great guys.

Shot the bow 200 times over last 2 days. Sanding it down today to start putting finish on and found this. Bloodwwod on Osage makes things stand out when you start sanding. My bow will not be ready to ship by June 30. Let me know what you want me to do Kelly.
-
That sucks. It's hard to see that after you put so much work into a bow.
If it was for me, I could wait. I'm in no rush.
Dave.
-
That will be up to Kelly and my recipient.
-
Don't mind waiting if it's for me.
-
I need to know if other don't mind waiting just in case you were the one rainman was suppose to send to he said he could get one done by August.
-
this is the list of who needs to ship by tomorrow.
talkingcabbage
Wood carver 2
Krasus
SportHunter
inksoup
ianpc

I am only tracking 3 bows received and this is who I am tacking as receive.
Krasus
delongbows
crittergetter
And 1 shipped and this is who shipped it.
peanut39350
I am pretty sure it should be at its new home.
I need updates folks.
The rest of you have to the end of July.
-
I don't mind waiting.
-
Shipped as of 830 this morning! :)
-
I don't mind waiting myself.I am trying to find something to ship this recurve in. The pvc pipe won't work for this bow.
-
Horn Cjhaser - If I'm sending a recurve I make a quicky box out of mdf. You just can't trust delivery companies......
I wouldn't mind waiting.
I'm making my first ever three piece for the trade. Riser glued and ready to be cut. New limbs have cured overnight on my new form.
How it's going to turn out......nobody knows! Once I get her strung and see whats going on i'll post some pictures. I'm going to be working on it today so we'll see.
-
no problem for me too... since i will change my posting address late august so i will wait anyway :D
shipping my bow today or tomorrow morning.
-
Ok, I sent a very nice bow off to my recipient today. Had some family mental health issues plus moving cities and a new job. So got some help this year and ended up with a better bow than I would have done on my own. Hope my recipient likes what I sent. Was determined to get a bow out on time this year.
Thank you to everyone who has participated and supported this swap over the years. It has been a real pleasure to have been in it from the start. I have gotten the Sergio Leonne spectrum over the years, the good the bad and the ugly, however I have treasured all the bows I have received and look forward to the bow I will get this year.
A special thank you again to Kelly for the work he has done and his service to the country. You are a great guy and a credit to your parents.
-
Kelly,
i have shipped the bow a few minutes ago. if you send me a PM i can reply you back the tracking information.
best.
hope the recipent will like the bow.
-
Im ready for glue up in the morning.
Wont be long now.probably shipping it out within a week if all goes well.
-
So I got my new 3 piece shooting....but as always the first set of limbs off new forms were a bit of a guess regarding stack height....83lb limbs are a bit over the desired weight of 55#!
I'll get a new pair glued up tomorrow.
-
"83# limbs are a bit over the desired weight-" Been down that road couple times myself Mike, admittedly by a smaller margin but overweight is overweight I guess.Hope your new limbs make the cut!
-
Ok, I'm finally making progress on bow no2. This one will be out by the end of July. As I said, the 1st one delaminated at the top fade. Oh well, I think I will prefer this one in any case.
Look forward to seeing all the bows.
-
My plan A bow was over 80# as well. I got it down to 70# and it will go down a bit more, but it was supposed to be a two piece, but it doesn't want to play nice.
Instead of fighting with it, I started plan B. I'll be on it all day today.
Dave.
-
Kelly, I'm fine with waiting and will be happy with what ever I am lucky enough to get.
-
Im ok with waiting Kelly.
-
Kelly, I see I'm on the early ship list -- I don't believe that's correct? This isn't my first trade and I've been on time every year. If it is correct, I'm sorry. I'm going to be finishing the bow this week and will be able to ship by next weekend. I've had some setbacks with finishing.
-
X2 for me. If I remember correctly, I have shipped on time in the past.
Dave.
-
According to the usps tracker my recipient will have his by this Thursday :)
-
My new limbs are now glued up and i'll be doing a bit on them today. Weight should be good this time ;)
-
I don't mind waiting for whatever I get. I'm just glad to be a part of the swap. All going well I will be shipping out next week. All these heavy bows being made by mistake can come to me if you want to get rid of them guys :D
Dan
-
X3 for me, I shipped on time last year. I think Kelly may have posted the list backwards.
I should be wrapped up by the end of this month, took on several new clients this year that played havoc with my schedule.
Here are the two I'll be gluing up soon. The first is a BBO with walnut tapered mid lam. The second is a very old bow blank that will get a boo back. Not sure which one will be the final bow.
-
New limbs are 3# over my finished weight :) Perfect :)
I'm off to my exotic wood suppliers today but will get them finished off this week.
I finally got around to making one of those cable 'strings' with some aluminium hooks at the ends that I saw on South Cox's video on youtube. they allow you to string a bow and check string tracking/limb twist before the limbs are cut to width It's a good job I did because one limb did not want to pull straight when pulled on the measured centreline. I had to offset that limbs 'center' by about 2mm to get it to track true. Gluing/shaping the nocks has never gone so quickly because I was super eager to see the outcome once the limbs were cut and it was actually strung.....perfectly straight pulling limbs with zero twist.
I'm very glad I took the time to make one of these set ups and would highly recommend it. I've already worked out some improvements or Mk11
-
Mike,
Do you have any designs for MK2 please, if you don't mind.
Thanks
Pete
-
I got my bow in the mail from krausus today, thanks man it turned out really pretty
-
I recieved a really great Hill Style Longbow, built by Razorback..
This thing is definitely well made, and even I can shoot it!..lol
The riser appears to be Zebra with long thin fadeouts, and hard maple core lams..
Thanks Very Much, Tony.. You do good work, bud.!

Glad you like it. :)
-
Pzee - they are just in my head! I'll post some pictures when I get my bow done.
-
Thanks Mike
-
Mike where can i find that video on YouTube that shows the jig you mentioned for checking limb alignment
-
Been awhile again. Work has just been sucking the life out of me lately. No energy left to even surf TG.
If anyone is going to be late on mine, it's all good. I'm in no hurry (although always anxious.)
As for my recipient, I better get on cutting this bow in half to get it to him by the end of the month. Time's a-wastin'.
-
It was a video by Stalker Stick bows. I think South Cox the owner of that company posts on here?
When I saw his method it was like a light going on....of course that's how to do it!
-
Im ready to ship on Monday.
Their is a looming strike for Canada Post. Hopfuly they get things settled and dont strike.
The bow is in its shipping tube ready to go. My recipient should be happy. Its pretty quick, and very quiet. The weight fell in the range my recipient asked for thank godness.
-
My bow is ready for finishing. It's 8 pounds overweight and I'll reduce that a bit more with final sanding, but boy can it spit out a heavy arrow! Eat your Wheaties victim!! ;)
Dave.
-
Dave, I love cereal for breakfast. But honestly, I can wait for my bow. We are in the process of months vying, very complicated, and I don't know when I will get to shoot it. Shipping address stays the same.
-
Well someone should be getting a tube in the mail in a week or so. Shipped today.
-
OK, started the ball rolling again! The bow had been roughed out months ago. Looks like it might be a few pounds over, but I'll let my recipient send it back to me for a new bow if he doesn't like this one. Most people on here don't seem to mind when the question is asked.
I don't necessarily have to cut this thing in half, so I've considered just finishing it up and sending it to be done. But I really wanted to make a 2 piece finally, and what better person to practice on than my poor victim?
Planning to build it Big Jim style. I don't usually put handle overlays on my bows (or tip overlays for that matter.) But it seems I'll need to for this. Otherwise my fiberglass sleeve will be protruding awkwardly or I'll have to grind through the back glass in way of the sleeve which would seem to be a bad choice for bow strength/longevity.
So, today I ground some more wood down to make cherry and walnut overlays (handle and tip) to match the lams. Things are glued up and I'll start roughing out the handle later this week in preparation for the big cut this weekend if all goes as planned. I might just make the end of the month after all. Well, that'll be a miracle, but I'll be close.

Hey David, that take down sleeve ain't so bad. -
-
Since I couldn't find a tube to ship my trade bow I built a crate for the bow to ship in. Just hope my victim has a crowbar to get the bow out. :biglaugh: I will be shipping the bow out tomorrow to my victim. C
-
I'm pretty sure I'll be able to whittle my way into any box containing a bow from anyone on this site. Can't wait to see what I end up with, though I know I have to.
-
I am officially shipped!!! My victim should have a delivery on Monday if the delivery date is right.I just hope my victim likes this design I have been working on.
-
Pictures Please!!!!! I'd like to see what I'm waiting for. :goldtooth:

Pics are good. Lol.

Ground down some moose antler for overlays today. I'll be cutting it close but should come in just under the wire!
-
Ahh, the thread is coming alive!
-
Mine is done. :) I twisted up a string for it this afternoon. I just need to get the packaging ready and I can ship, as soon as Kelly gives me the go ahead. Of course, I'll shoot it a bunch and show it off a bit first.
Dave.
-
Thanks Tom. that's one worth waiting for. I'd be happy to give it a good home and put it to work this fall.
-
I just checked the tracking on the bow and it looks like it is waiting at my victims door today.
-
You must have put the wrong address I didn't see it outside my door

Spent some time in the shop this afternoon, I might just come to close to the deadline after all. Of course, cutting this perfectly good bow in half was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do in the shop. Dear ******, here's your bow:

I just hope the band-aid holds:
-
Glad you like it Sport. It is only the second bow I have made on that design I drew out. If you see anything you think I should change let me know.
Canopy can't wait to see how that takedown comes along I want to try that on a bow myself sometime but haven't had the guts to do it yet.
-
Pretty 'curve you built, Mr Horn!
Good shooting too ya Sporthunter!
-
very cool shape there, horn man! awesome execution too  :clapper:
watching your take down David- i really want to do one of those-if i ever get back to my bow shop again!!! did you profile the limbs before the cut- or will you do that after the handle is done?
-
Wayne -- I've been wanting to this myself for a long time. If it wasn't for this swap and my streak of trying something new with each swap I'd still be waiting. Now I can't wait to start one for me. As for the limbs, it was roughed out and floor tillered months ago. There's still about 10# to come off for final string alignment, etc. Things looked good this morning. Hope to get back to the shop this evening and have it shooting before bed. Then the big test -- will it come apart?
-
Oh, and Paul: that is a fine looking bow. You did just fine on the receiving end of this swap, Tom is a heck of bowyer it looks like. That thing has a clean, simple beauty that I really enjoy looking at over and over.
-
"Then the big test -- will it come apart?"
I'm sayin- nope, if you can thread an insert in wood and glue it in and it stays on a 3 pc... nope on yours failing.
Let us know....
-
You'll know when you first string and draw it.....tick!
-
Don't worry too much about it coming apart Dave. I thought mine was a one piece again, then I took it across my knee and pulled until it gave, then I turned it 1/4 turn and pulled again until I saw a gap. A big flat screwdriver got it the rest of the way. If you gave it enough release wax and the locator dowels are thin enough, it should give easily.
Dave.
-
OOPS, thought you were talkin later, when you shoot it... :D
-
Here are a few pics of my swap bow.

Bamboo/ osage/ bamboo with osage, pau ferro and a bit of yew for accent, and walnut for a power lam.
I hope my victim likes it.
Dave.
-
ooooo!!!!! :)
-
I think your victim will like it Dave. Beautiful bow.

Thanks guys. :)
There have been a bunch of nice bows so far this year.
Wayne, I'm so jealous of your shop! I can't wait till I find a place in the country where I can have a real shop.
Dave.
-
Shooters report---> this bow rocks, quiet, fast, smoother than my '62 Kodiak. Thanks again!
-
Dave, if it's for me, I like it a lot. :bigsmyl:
-
Thanks. :) It will be a few more days before it gets to it's new home. I still want to shoot it in some more.
Dave.
-
Dear *******,
I will be late delivering your bow. Apologies, but I don't think you want this one.
Once the hangover from this bottle of rye wears off, I'll start the next one. It may just be a one piece unless you want to wait even longer.
-Dave
-
Dang Dave thats no good. If I remember right Big Jim always used phenolic in the riser on the 2 piece designs and now I can see why. If you are making it for me I am in no hurry.
Paul thanks for the compliment on the bow. I hope it serves you well.
-
How did you manage to do that?!?
-
Well thats no fun Dave, I feel for you. Was a good looking bow. Better now than when your recipient gets it. I'm in no hurry so if its for me don't sweat it.
Good luck with the hangover.
-
Dang.. Sorry, Dave
-
holy smokes mate! :scared: bad luck- sorry fella!
-
If you're building for me Dave, I'm in no hurry. Get over the hangover and take your time.
-
Sorry it didn't work out Dave, it was looking great.

I pulled on it? :banghead: Although he was working on a 90# bow and I thought he was just being extra cautious. This one was a bit less poundage and being the great forward thinker that I am, I built the bow before I watched the videos. Obviously my future attempts will have phenolic or fiberglass.
No problems with it coming apart though, it popped good when I first strung it and a little tug in the vise and I had a nice two piece. I was pretty excited when it went up on the board to try out full draw. String lined up perfectly and tiller was still right on at brace. The sleeve itself seemed more than strong enough, it shows no signs of distortion or damage. But the tenon needs to be made of stiffer stuff obviously.
So decisions: Do I knock out a one piece to replace this and get the bow out sooner, or try again with the two piece? Wonder which my recipient would prefer?
-
Big Jim actually uses a 1/4" piece of woven fiberglass. The stuff is amazingly strong. Don't feel to bad Dave, my second 2 piece wouldn't come apart so I had to grind it all down and start over. I had the taper going the wrong way. :readit:
Oops!
You know what they say, "if you ain't breakin you ain't building",
Sorry for the bad luck bro. Now rub that head of yours and start again!
-
That sucks. I feel for you Dave. All that work and materials.
I'm in no rush if it was for me.
Dave.
-
OUCH..!
I feel your pain.. You had that pretty far into the build..
Could be grain orientation?
-
Ok I have some catching up to do. Sorry about my mix up in the shipping dates I figured yall did not have enough stress in your lives so I should add some.
I will try and get a new list out of what I am tracking I am just on PG 23 so Bare with me.
Some great bows sent and received.
-
I went to the post office this afternoon and I had a nice little surprise waiting for me at the post office. I was expecting some supplies for a couple more bows I have to build but I had a long tube with a
Pretty little Ipe and cherry bow with black glass. Thanks Steve, hopefully I can test her out on one of our little whitetail deer or some pigs this fall. Since my computer is acting up I will have Chackworth post some pics for me late .
-
Dave, maybe you can repurpose the limbs to a TD?
-
You know what Mike? I told my kids I'm going to repurpose the upper one for a whoopin' stick. It's gotta handle and everything now! I'm also thinking of garden stakes.
Didn't make it as far as I wanted tonight, but take two is coming along. This one has a 0.40 center section made up of 6 pieces of UL and ULS with one .06 red phenolic accent strip down the middle. Ran all the glass and phenolic through the sander to rough it up nice.
In the future I will just buy some Jim's 1/4" black woven glass. But to get this going, I figured I'd use up what I have around that was never going to make a bow anyway. I think it's going to look pretty sweet even if it does take a lot of glue to put together. Sides are clean osage. This sucker oughta hold. I'm feeling good enough that I'm making two, one for me.
Everything is cleaned and ready for glue up tomorrow night. But then I won't be able to touch it until next week. And then there is my first time going to ETAR. Uhg. Glad y'all are a patient bunch.
-
Your welcome Tom. Hope you like the way it shoots.
Dan, if that was for me im ok with waiting. That sucks.
-
Went in to work a bit late this morning to get the riser blocks glued up and in the oven. Ordered some more glass. (I like that OMC offers "Crystal Clear" for an extra buck.) Plan to cut and grind the lams tonight so I'm all ready to glue up next week when I get back to the shop.
Sticking with the plan to make twins. If all works out, I get to keep the second one. If not, well, my recipient gets the second one as a one piece.
-
Wish you the best, David.
-
I admire your tenacity
-
Sorry to see that Dave, wish I could have been there though ... We've only seen my bows explode at full draw so this would have been a nice change! Lol. You'll get it, just get some glass in that tenon.
-
Fired up the bow oven for the first time, worked like a champ. Glued a bamboo back on the English longbow blank and induced some slight reflex.
This blank has some history, it came from the original Lake Club locally that opened in 1935. The man that gave it to me and told me he bought it with a group of very old bows and never knew what to do with it until he met me. I suspect this blank is easily over 60 years old. Hopefully I can do it some justice. I've had it indoors for about three years so it should be acclimated well.
Also plan to glue up the tri-lam BBO shortly. Already did the z splice and glued the mid lams together. We'll be cutting it close this year and will probably go into the grace period a bit.
-
That really sucks, Dave! Would have been a really nice bow.
Bring it to ETAR and we'll have a pair of the nicest fire pokers in Potter County, PA.
-
Wow, a lot of catching up to do. That really stinks about that two piece. If its for me I can take a one or two piece -- whichever you feel like building. I'm in no hurry!
If the weather cooperates I'll finally be spraying this weekend. We haven't gotten a day withot rain or high humidity (when I'm not working) for the past month. And I'm not fancy enough to have an actual spray booth, so I have to wait and do it in the garage. But as soon as it's done she's ready to go! Sorry to *(!&!/@* -- I'll get her out as soon as I can!
-
yesterday in Turkey, "State of Emergency" was declared.
i am not sure that i will be able to receive the bow that you will send. please do not do any shipment to TR before i make this situation clear. if it is classified as "weapon", then i am doomed in custom.
:(
may the force be with TR.
hope to see you again...
best.
-
I've been thinking of you Ink. Hard to believe all that's happened in Turkey since I was there in November. Take care of yourself.
-
Be safe Ink.
-
Just got back from wedding in California and my bow from Inksoup was waiting for me. Haven't got a chance to shoot it yet, but i will this weekend while I am working on a new bow for my recipient.
-
Glad to hear you're ok Ink, been thinking about you. Hope things get better soon for you and TR.
-
thanks to you all for all good wishes... me and my family are safe for now.
i hope you like it rainman.
best.
-
Wishing you and the family well, Ink.
-
Hope everything will work out for you and yours ink.
-
Ink, I hope everything is well with you and yours!
-
I had to go out of town for work this week so I'm a little behind. I'll have the bow completed this week end but gotta go back outta town next week so I won't be able to spray the bow till I get back. Sorry #%€#*%, I'm gonna be a few days late!
-
I just have to get mine packaged up for shipping.
Kelly, can you let me know if I have a green light to ship?
Dave.
-
I'm ready for final sanding and spraying. Should ship within a week.
-
Since the plan is to build two identical bows by not needing a spare this time, I'm choosing what I want and hope my recipient likes my taste. Green back, clear belly, yew limbs, laminated i-beam riser with alternating glass and osage sides.
Back a little earlier today from family vacation after driving through the night to get home. Had time to pull the risers out of the oven and cut and grind lams. Glass showed up while I was gone too. Won't be too long until ***** gets his bow I hope.
-
Looking good!
Dave.
-
Looks great canopyboy. I finally posted on Monday to #########, I hope you like it. I went with something simply cause it was my first time using green glass and I wanted to see how it went. Then I decided to cut it in half to save myself some postage, overall I think it's nice and it shoots nice too.
Danny
-
Second one out of the oven last night. I'm kinda digging the racing stripe look.
-
I also really like that racing stripe glue up. Very cool. Is that the osage I gave you a while back? If so I'm glad to see you're cutting into it! Good luck .... Don't screw up, lol.
-
David, those risers are really cool looking. Hope one of them is coming my way.
-
Looks very sharp, David.
-
 :archer:
Dave.

Making some headway with the English style longbow, very old cedar belly/boo back. I've been wanting to try this true D bow style for a while. Going slow on this one, letting it sweat the string right now. I have to work on this one inside since our humidity is near 95% lately.
Left limb is a bit stiff mid limb, working on that slowly, trying to keep it stout. 69" NTN, black n red micarta tips.

Good looking stuff guys! I finally got mine sprayed yesterday, then buffed and waxed today. Got a string made and pre-stretching. May need to make another though. I'm a little out of practice as of late. Also got a piece of leather drying on the bow to get the shape of the grip, and will stitch it up tomorrow, kids willing. Momma is out of town all weekend, so I'm here trying to play Ring-leader to this three-ring circus solo. I'll try to get pictures up tomorrow. I'm totally sold on this Krystal finish. Sprays super nice, and finishes nice and smooth and hard. Looks good buffed out with #0000 steel wool too. Sorry to my victim. Looks like I'll be a day late shipping for the first time since I've started this swap! She will go out Monday.

Pulled to 18" on tree, stiff at fades.

Nice Paul!! You have an understanding wife to be doing that on the kitchen counter. Dang!
Need pictures Joe...
Just back from ETAR and all excited to get back to business. Talked to Big Jim for a little bit about his takedown process and got to examine one up close during the discussion. He's one heck of a guy, very generous with his time and knowledge.
-
Not a chance she'd let me do that in the kitchen, just lucky to have a finished walk-out basement, humidity has been way to high to do much work in the garage. Getting real close now, should be finished by the end of the week.
-
Got mine all done. Had to adjust the tiller a little. One more final sanding and I'll be ready for spray.
-
Okay canopyboy, here ya go.
Just shipped out today, so for the first time ever I'm late. Oh well. Try again next year, right?
She's 60" and 47# @28". Sorry to my victim for coming in a few pounds under. I hope it doesn't break the deal :)
She's got bocote and purple heart riser with bamboo core limbs under green glass. Osage tip wedges.

Looks nice
-
Very nice..
-
Like the green glass, nice profile.
-
Sweet looking bow, I like the green glass also.
-
Very nice!
-
Just received a beauty of a bow from Talkingcabbage! Very sweet looking bow, love the woods and the glass, the length and profile, well... Everything!
Outstanding work, I will get some pics up when I can, have been under the weather for a few months, so havent been on here much, also taking care of my 4mo old baby girl, life's been busy.
Thanks so much for the beautiful bow Joe!
-
Wow! Got a chance to take a few shots, and this bow is a sweet shooter. Fast, quiet, and no hand shock. Grip fills my hand nicely. Thanks again Joe, this is one hell of a nice bow.
-
Awesome, I'm glad you got her okay. Sorry for being a bit light. I wasnt expecting you to get it till tomorrow! Very glad you're happy with her.
I do have a request -- if or when you get to shoot something with it, I'd like a picture. If you don't take it hunting, that's okay. But I enjoy seeing my bows get used and see what people are taking with them.
Happy trails my friend!
-
Nice bow...congrats.
Still waiting on mine...not complaining, just excited.
-
Jomohr, I am very jealous. I saw that bow and hoped it was mine. The lines look great and it just seemed it would be shooter. Enjoy it and your 4 month old, congratulations.
-
Still waiting on mine too Breazyears. Also not complaining -- the wait just makes the excitement grow! It seems there's quite a few builders working on bows. I wonder how far along we are at this point?
-
This went into the mail to "********" today..
Please pardon me for being a week late, but I had a mishap with my first try at shipping!..
I included one of Michael Harbisons fine 3 bundle, Fury strings, with beaver fur silencers. The bow is pretty quiet without those, but they look pretty cool!
I hope they enjoy it.. Its definitely a shooter!..

WOW!!! What a beautiful bow.
-
Very nice looking t/d bow Jeff.
Just finished this boo backed cedar English style longbow with micarta tips, 69" NTN. Packed and ready to ship out Monday. This is my first of this style but it won't be the last, really fun build. Hits like a hammer and very quiet.

Nice bow! Just got done rebuilding my trailer wiring so that pool looks nice too. :)
-
Very nice! I got out with my daughter and shot my trade bow from Talking Cabbage a little bit. It was her first time seeing a me shooting a bow, and she laughed so hard. Gonna be a good little archer, figure I gotta start her young.

Some nice bows there people!
-
Well, I'm sanding the finish off my bow today and starting over. I used some "older" buffalo hide I had trying to finish the last of it. Sprayed a couple coats and let her set a couple days to dry. Started sanding this morning to remove a few dust specks and a small run and it's a little gummy. So I'm starting over with some fresh. That stuff was old and I new better but tried anyways. :banghead:
-
Jeff -- WOW!! That bow sure is a looker!!
Paul -- beautiful tiller on that longbow!
I hope one of those is showing up on my doorstep soon! I keep checking the mail a couple times every day, but sometimes I think maybe the postman forgot where I live!!
-
Shipped yesterday, should be there Friday. Keep your eyes peeled for a long tube, happy hunting! :archer2:
-
I just got back from the post office. My bow is on it's way. My apologies to my victim for taking so long.
Dave.
-
Went to the post office today and their was a tube waiting for me their. Got it home and found that it had a beautiful two piece take down in it.
THANK YOU goes out to Dan76 for this awesome bow. Shoots very nice, i love it.
Thanks again Dan.

Hey, we've got some stuff moving!! I'm excited. If my bowyer hasn't shipped yet, don't rush. I'm excited to get a bow, but I can wait -- maybe :)
I'd rather it take a bit than have you rush and hurt the bow or yourself trying to get it done quickly. But if you have shipped ---- :bigsmyl:
-
Some lovely bows being posted. fingers crossed one of them is coming this way ;)
I've been too busy to get much done on mine, it still needs final sanding and finishing....
-
sporthunter... really liked your bow...
this year is going little low but very nicely... i would like to know more about it. how it is build, thickness, length, etc..etc.. i really want to own one for myself.
re: kellyg: still hanging here and trying to solve my movement to Ankara issue. i will let you know my address soon.
-
Got a beautiful bamboo backed bow in the mail today, thanks sport hunter i like it i will post some pics later
-
Great to hear Jason! Always good to see bows survive shipping. Hope you enjoy the bow. Now I want to make another, it turned out great. Making bows for others always pushes my attention to detail and I think the bow probably turned out better than if I did it for myself and that very old stave deserved my best effort.
-
Ink - The finished dimensions were 7/8" wide at the handle and either 1/2" or 3/8" at the nocks, maybe Jason can confirm accurate dimensions as I no longer have the bow. The bow is 69" nock to nock and probably 70 to 70.5" long total. I started with a 72" blank.
The back was bamboo that was tapered from the handle thinning towards the tips, the belly wood was what I think is cedar, at least it smelled like cedar, the grain was rift sawn and the rings were very thin. The back was glued up with smooth-on with about 1" of backset, it finished with about 1/2" of string follow.
The bow followed the 5/8 rule for the most part meaning the belly thickness is about 62.5% of the limb width. The belly is D shaped, basically flat back and half moon belly. Here is a link to some old school longbow plans to give you a better idea.

thank you for your informative reply...
but cedar? makes a bow? seems like made it already :D
good work mate..
best.

Ink, Its 1/2" at the nocks

Came home Friday night and saw a few packages had been delivered. A couple hours later I saw a long tube someone had placed in the corner and I about flipped! I asked daughter unit 2 why she hadn't told me about it and she just shrugged. I got all excited to tear it open and then I noticed that my builder packaged things like I did, with some 18ga brads holding the wooden plug in the end. And then my world deflated. It was DU2's bow, just sent back from when she was in Oregon with grandpa earlier this summer. She said, "Oh cool." then took it and walked off. Little stinker.
-
In other news, life has been crazy but managed to have the day to myself today. So I went to the range this morning and spent the afternoon in the shop. Attempt #2 has been cut in half and put back together again:
With a little luck, this one will make a bow.
On Friday, I stopped by my distributor to pick up a gallon of Krystal satin and had a great conversation with a guy there who really seemed to know his stuff. No matter how hard I try, I'm never 100% happy with the finish on my bows. Left with some great advice and flow enhancer which I hope will get me that last little bit.
-
Canopyboy, I used Krystal for the first time on this year's trade bow, and I loved it. I just used it straight till the last coat, and for that I added a bit of lacquer thinner and it worked great. Not sure if that's the right thing to do, but it worked lol.
-
Joe,
According to the manufacturer, you can thin it up to 10% which can help. I only see the problems with the gloss finish, and even then they are very subtle. Looking forward to using a little retarder on this bow to see how it goes, although the last coat will be satin and likely cover everything up anyhow.
-
I'm down to 2 final coats on my swap. Yea, I've been dragging this out. Sorry to my recipient. I'm off work tomorrow so I'll get one coat done then the final on Saturday. I let each coat cure for 24 hours then a light sand before the next. Only way I can get a decent finish without a dust free shop. Plan to ship on Monday.
-
Folks I apologize I was out of town for a bit. I will get caught up here to see were we are at.
Looks like I have my work cut out for me, I am way behind. But I enjoy this work compared to what I came back to at work.
Sorry for not being on it this year.
-
Its all good Kelly! Your awesome.
-
Kelly, thanks for your service.
-
Good news. Had it up on the wall and out to 30" with nothing exciting to report. Hope to finish it up next weekend. Looks like it might finish up a couple pounds light, we'll see. I'm trying to figure out what I missed in my stack calc, I think I forgot to add the yew factor. My recipient can send it back if they're not happy...
-
kellyg pm me please... i will give you my new address...
best.
-
I didn't get shipped today. I had to put some finishing touches on the bow when I got home. I'll get it in a tube tomorrow and ship it out. Sorry for dragging this out guys.
-
Someone is getting a package on Friday!

You better wait a few days Randy, I won't be home till Sunday!
That's me praying that it's coming my way. Beautiful bow by the way.
-
Nice bow Randy!! My fingers are crossed.
Got ********'s bow shooting tonight. All good, although the pop as I drew back for the 6th shot as the mold release did its job caused my heart to skip a beat. But all good. Came apart with bare hands upon unstringing, but nice and tight when back together. High hopes of shipping early next week. If so, I'll at least beat the grace period on take two.
-
Beautiful bow Critter! Here's hoping its coming my way!! I keep thinking of making a three-piece longbow like that but just never get it done.
Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how many more bows need to get shipped out?
-
Mine will be in the post tomorrow....finally!
-
Dang Randy.... After looking at that bow, Im wishing I was in the swap....
Very nice buddy!
-
Thx guys!!! Tracking shows it was delivered today. Hope it went to the right place! :dunno:
-
Read 'em and weep boys! Check out what came in the mail today! Well, actually, I missed the delivery and literally chased down the mail truck all day till I got him! Lol

This bow is awesome all around! Excellent finish, weight, and feel. The only thing I wish it had was a signature! Critter, do you have specs for the guys? I'd guess but I'd probably be way off. I did get to shoot it a little bit today and it shoots very smooth and deadly quiet. I love it. This will definitely be my go-to bow this season! Thanks so much!
-
I got a package yesterday from Pathfinder22 :)
Thank you so much it is a lovely bow. I'll try and get some pictures of it in its new home soon.
Again many thanks for making me this bow - I'm very happy with it :)
-
Joe, glad it made it to you safe and sound. My wife helped me package it up and when it was all ready to go she asked "did you sign it"? I said, CRAP!!!!! I forgot to put specs and sign the last 2 bows I made. I'll chalk it up to old age. :dunno:
It's all walnut with moose antler overlays and tips. 60" ntn, my scale shows 57#@28" but I don't completely trust my scale. It's give me some weird readings before but it's close to that.
Glad you like it. I'm pm'ing you some more info!
-
Oh, black glass and Koa accent
-
Randy that's a fantastic bow.
-
Thank you sir!!
-
Joe, you sure are a lucky guy, I was really hoping that one was coming my way.
Randy, sweet looking bow!
-
Mine is finally finished....lots of stuff has been happening to slow me down but I got there in the end :)
I'll be packing it up and sending tomorrow. Kenny i'll let you know the tracking number asap.
-
As far as I can tell from communications within this thread, 14 have shipped, 12 have received out of 24 participants so that means ~10 to go.
-
Well, close, but no ceeegar. I will not be ready to ship on time or within the grace period for the first time since the swap started. But like I said, I'm close:
This bow broke my first nock at 20 yds or more in almost 2 years. While my shooting has improved over the same period, I seem to have managed to keep my nocks intact. Boy, I had a lot of fun shooting it in. I can't wait to finish its twin.
It's sanded down to 180 grit. I was hoping to finish it Sunday, but my time was reprioritized for me and I ended up painting my daughter's room a slightly less hideous color than the one she chose 5 years ago. Now I leave on a quick trip only to return to my outlaws in town. This poor pair of sticks will have to wait a week before I'll be able to get back to it and get it sprayed.
-
Very nice David!
-
Looking good!
Dave.
-
lovely bow canopyboy... it is kind of hill style, isn't it?
-
Sweet dude.
-
That bow is looking great David.
-
Nice Dave.
No fire poker there
-
You know John, you have one heck of a nice fire poker now. Heck, you kept both halves, right? Part of me wanted to keep one, the bigger part didn't want to see either half again.
Yes sir Ink! It is most definitely a Hill style.
Y'all know what? I'm waiting to get home to recheck that bow. The picture makes the overlays look lopsided. Kinda bothering me, hope it is just the camera angle. If not, I've still got some sandpaper left.
-
Yup they are crooked as a dog's hind leg.. :)
-
re: canopyboy... then thank you making me a hill style bow... i always wanted one :D
-
sweet Dave!
-
is anybody know that kelly still alive?
-
This is awesome, I'll be participating in the swap next year!
-
Kelly is in the military and has obligations that keeps him away at times.
-
You can mark me received. I got a beautiful mild r&d with clear glass over bocoate, I believe. In the process of packing so just had a quick look and then put it back in the tube.
My bowyer was unable to get one done so he followed the rules and passed his bow along and very difficult that must have been. I've had to do that in the past with an excellent bow, so I know how he feels. It is another testament to the character of the people who are on this site and participate in this swap.
-
re: roy
ok got it... so who is looking after the swap thing.. . i need to post / give my new shipping address to deliver to my bowyer...
best.
-
I suggest sending Kelly a PM. He will eventually read it.
-
If you guys are ok with this. Ink, pm me your new address and the bowyer who is making / sending you a bow can pm me and I will forward him your address.
-
Ok with me Roy.
-
Thanks for stepping in and helping out Roy. looks like Kelly has an assistant for next year. :readit: :bigsmyl:
-
This is an attempt to show who has shipped and who has received based upon information in the thread to date. Feel free to copy/edit and repost with correct data if you see a mistake. Just trying to help out a bit while Kelly is serving our country.

Hope you like it when it arrives :)
-
Well done, Paul.
-
I shipped on the 10th of August. I'm still trying to find out where the bow went.
I haven't received one.
Dave.
-
I'm on the list twice, the information is correct. Shipped/Not Received.

List updated, thanks!

i do not have any pm privileges but in the page i have emailed you my address.

I received it, Ink.
So whomever is making Ink a bow, PM me and I'll forward you his address.
-
Roy,
Thanks for stepping in, it is appreciated.
If you go back a few years several of us were asked to help with the bow swap, when needed. Roy is doing what was asked of him back then. Kelly seems to be occupied with work. If you need something, and Kelly is not available, let us know and we will try to do what we can.
I am in Alaska for the better part of the next three weeks, after that don't hesitate to contact me if Kelly is swamped.
-
Not a problem, Walt..
SportHunter, check your PM..
-
Swap status updated, if you see any errors or have any updates let us know.

Quick update from me. I had left the bow with my parents to be collected from there as I've been away for the past few days. I got back to find out there had been a problem with the collection...eg. they didn't turn up...anyway I've rearranged the collection and it should be picked up today....
Sorry to £%^&*%$£"* but your bow is coming! Patience!
-
Thanks Paul, that's helpful. If you're tracking when they're going to ship, mine should ship out next week.
If I balanced out the shipped vs received correctly, there are three in the mail?
-
Ok folks I am truly sorry for the slack I have caused Sport and Roy thanks you both and any other that picked up my slack.
Ok if Sports post is correct and I have no reason to second guess it I am only tracking though
that wood carver and Sporthunter have both shipped.
That leaves
Canopyboy, rainman, PZee Walt, Delongbows and mikkekeswick needing to ship.
Not received is
Wood Carver
camopyboy
Walt
Inksoup
Dan76
Dan Landis
Let me know if this is not correct. I will hop on here at lunch to get this wrapped up.
I need to check my emails just to ensure I did not get any shipped or receives in there.
Again Sorry for being AWOL.
Oh and I did not enter it myself his year so sport you can take me off the ship and receive. I knew I would be pressed to make a bow this year so I opted out. I did not think I would not be able to keep up the easy part.
-
and 2 in the mail that I am tracking
-
Ok I read back through the Tread and got all caught up. just to prove it Mikkekeswick called me Kenny. :jumper:
-
No problem Kelly, just chipping in. Good to see u back.
-
Kelly, your service to our country is more important than this bow swap. Thank You for stepping up for our freedom.
Roy
Holly crap, that post was number 10,000 for me. How did ya all put up wif me?
Shut up McKenzie...
-
Cuz you're ok Roy. :)
Dave.
-
Happy 10000 post, you long winded, opinionated old fart. Keep em coming.
Kelly, thanks for all the work you do on this swap and for the country.
-
10,000 posts proves Roy is retired.
-
Kelly, thank you for your service to our nation. We really need heros like you that will still stand up for the National Anthem .
Thanks again!
I used to like you, (I think)
-
Unfortunately job is only a problem 12 or 14 hours of the day. the other is I am living in my RV at this location and I don't have internet when I get off. So it is all done on here. So I am going to make sure I get on at least at lunch Mon-fri weekends I don't plan on coming in.
PZee did your bow make it to ya? I heard that it had or did I just miss the post?
-

What he said, on both counts!

Oh, and the not only has this bow not broken, it's a lot of fun to shoot! I really like this bow, and will be sorry to see it go. If the recipient finds it subpar or not his style, I'll be happy to pay return shipping.
That said, I did stop shooting it and got it sprayed this weekend. Finish came out fairly well, the flow enhancer and a bit more air pressure was the ticket. I do need to come up with a way to make a small dust free paint booth though, life would be easier. Some day I'm going spray the perfect final coat on a bow. (While I got closer, it just wasn't yesterday.)
I'll get a wrap and string on it this week and get it in the mail no later than Monday, maybe even before the weekend.
Some teaser pictures between coats (before the pressure was turned up a little more):

-
Sure is purty! What is the handle wrap made from, looks quite different?
-
David, that is awesome dude...
-
Very striking bow, the green glass and osage are perfect together.
-
No wrap yet Dan. That's the fiberglass and carbon socket. It'll have a leather wrap when all is said and done that should hide it.
-
:clapper:
-
She's a beauty Dave! And she'll only get prettier as the osage darkens.
Dave.
-
I thought it might have been rawhide or something similar, don't look too bad the way it is. I'm sure a handle wrap will make it look even better.
-
David that is spectacular work! Just amazing!!!
-
Lookin good David!!
-
WOW! That IS pretty! :jumper:
-
Thanks all.
Just as long as my recipient likes it. Will be in the mail shortly.
-
:clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
Well done Dave!
-
Nice bow Dave! That finish looks legit.
-
Dave, that is awesome! I am going to go home and try to pull that bow you made last year apart.
-
Let me know how that works out for you...
-
Geeze Ralph, I'm surprised it's still together.
LOL
-
I must say, Dave (woodcarver) sent me an unbelievable bow. I would like to thank him for an awesome bow. I will get pics up of it this weekend, however there are pics on pg 25.
Thanks
Pete
-
Dan76....
Are you still reading this thread?
Anyone know Dan?
His bow was shipped a while back, I know the bowyer who shipped it..
-
Roy did they get a tracking number?
-
He has the customs paperwork, but is at work now. He will send it to me tonight.
-
Ok, Kelly. The bow for Dan76 was delivered August the 3rd. Dave Lint, Delongbows, forwarded the bow he received in the swap.
-
I think it's great that bows are still shipping, but i gotta say it kinda pisses me off that I had to hump my ass to make the " newbies" deadline. What was the point.
-
Thanks roy.
And Krasus to keep you from have to be on the newbie list next year. :)
That has cut down on folks entering with no intention on shipping a bow. There are some out there who will do just that. It does not stop it but since we started that; no new person has flaked on us.
I am tracking one should go in the mail this weekend.
-
Salvaged the bow that had the chrysal and it shipped today.
-
canopyboy that's an awesome looking bow, great job. You are making somebody very happy.
__________
Andy
-
Dropped the bow at the PO this morning. It's nice shipping a short tube! Forgot to check when it was supposed to arrive. Hopefully before too long.
I hope my recipient is ok with me working out all of the bugs on his bow. I can't wait to make v2 for me now...
-
Some pics. It looks a lot better in the sunlight, but that may have to wait for my recipient.

What a fantastic looking bow, nice job Dave!
-
Yes! Very well done Dave!
-
Yea, that thing is just awesome.
-
canopyboy... is it coming overseas? hahahah... lovely bow mate... and lucky recipent...
best....
-
Well that one is a sweet looking bow for sure.
-
That is one pretty bow! Nice work Dave!!
Dave.
-
So I'm hoping someone has a package in the next couple of days, but I forgot to check on the delivery time before I left.
-
Very nice, Dave.
-
Good looking bow I didn't think I would like the green glass but it looks good
-
I heard there's a bow waiting for me when I get home. Can't wait.
-
well I cant wait to see pic of it.
-
After a long hard day at work it sure is nice to get home and find a mailing tube waiting for me.
Inside I found the beautiful longbow that Dave ( canopyboy ) built.
Dave, you really blew me away! The bow looks great in your pictures, but in my hands it is a knockout! I can't believe how light it is in the hand. Tired as I am, I still shot about 60 arrows to try it out. It draws as smooth as silk and hits right where I'm looking. I can't wait to show it off to my friends.
Thank you Dave!
-
Tonight I made it home and finally got to check out the package that awaited. Inside was a fine trilam backed with snakeskin from rainman. Unfortunately, it's late, I'm exhausted, it's raining, and we are running on generator at the moment. So ... shooting will have to wait until tomorrow.
More to come!!
-
So... the bow from rainman came in with the rain?
-
Got mine late yesterday, a beautiful creation by Mikkekewick. At least I think that's who it's from, going by the shipping information on the package. It's a beautiful 3 pcs. with yew belly lams under clear glass, black glass on back of limbs. Riser is a combo of yew and marble wood I believe, with accent stripes. Will try to get some pics up soon. we're getting pounded by rain today and calling for more the next few days, hope to get a few shots through it between showers.
Thanks Mike for a beautiful bow, one worth waiting for!
-
Three bows received and no pics, come one guys, lets see those bows.
-

Not really, it was sunny when it came I think.
Funny story -- Dan shipped it and it came while I was on the west coast visiting family. It was showing undelivered when he first checked and then someone ended up signing for it. However, no word came to him from me or posted up here so he began to worry. Turns out my wife got the missed delivery notice and went and picked it up for me. But for some reason she saw no reason to tell me about it. If Dan hadn't eventually reached out to make sure everything was alright, I might still not know it was there as it was hidden (accidently I've been assured) behind the coat rack.

So another funny story -- Dave had my name in the swap last year. He built a beautiful bow for my wife as I figured I already had enough.
Then it gets better. I had posted this year that I was going to challenge myself to make a 2 piece. So Dave reached out via PM or email (I can't remember which) and asked if I wanted to collaborate remotely as he was going to try the same thing. It always felt funny talking to him about how I was building his bow. Luckily, he was a step or two ahead and able to feed me a few hints so that I could avoid a few pitfalls. Except about how strong the tenon had to be. He failed to mention that...
:smileystooges:
-
I am tracking we are down to 2 bows needing to go out. one was waiting on info from me and the bowyer to get back to town. I believe.
The other I was told was almost done.
-
Gee Dave, I thought that you would have listened to Big Jim in his videos about the glass reinforced tenon... ;) If it makes you feel better, you did a way better job than I did. And I like the racing stripes.
I think I'll go shoot my new bow now. :archer:
Dave.
-
Ok here we go, sorry for the poor quality, cell phone, poor lighting, etc. Will get some better one if this rain ever stops.

The pics don't do it justice, hopefully Mike will chime in and give us a little on this build.
-
Nice! We're wrapping this thing up in style.
-
this is lovely bow... i really like the design...
did you receive it or will you be shipping it dan?
best.
-
Dan received that one. From Mike in the UK.
I am tracking only Ink and Walt need to get their bows.
Please let me know if I am mistaken on this point.
Mike you do great work. Man every year I think man I could stack the deck and get me on for X or Z but I just cant do that for you never know what the hat will get you.
I sat this one out and will next year too. Only because of work. But I will drop my retirement On Monday. That means 1 Oct 2017 I will be on the retirement rolls and no longer on the Active roles.
So I bet I can get one done for our 18 Swap. :)
-
Yeah Ink I'll be hanging on to this one for sure. Mike did an excellent job, love the wood combo, the lines, everything about it.
Kelly does that mean you are retiring or just retiring from active service?
-
Active duty; I was not smart enough to invest when I was younger so I still have to work but I don't think it will be as hard.
-
Been there & Done that Kelly. LOL I highly recommend retirement though. I retired in June and am loving it!
-
Well heck you should go over and pester Roy ole Boy.
-
Nice bow there Dan/ Mike. I like that riser profile and the look of the parallel to tapered limb wedges.
-
Might just show up on his door step some day, still getting things caught up around here for now.
Thanks Ralph, it's pretty nice, rates right up there with the one I received from you a few years ago. Are you still building?
-
Dan, with the new job and kids I have the time to build about 1 bow a year. I do more shootin than building what has been fun.
-
I understand, enjoy the kids while you can, they grow up way too fast.
I did manage to kill a big gobbler this spring with the bow you made me. Took me long enough.
-
ttt
-
Let's see the final bows, post some pics.
-
There is a bow in the mail. headed out.
-
So we finally all done?
-
Nope one more. I am tracking Walt Francis has not gotten his bow.
-
Oh and I am tracking the bow shipped was delivered but and Ink Soup will post pics tomorrow.
-
yesterday after work, i went home and there was a package waiting for me...
seems like putting $25 price on and saying "not for trade" worked in Turkish custom.
here is the beauty...

btw walt:
in the note inside the package, says not for shooting. is this for real or just a diversion to custom? can i shoot with it?
thanks...
best.
-
He had to put that Ink it is a decoration as far as the shipping company is concerned. But it is a working decoration.
-
thanks kelly...
i get it in the first place, but i wanted to double check.
well then in couple days i can (i hope) post some full draw pics.
best.
-
Where is that full draw date
-
re: kellyG
i had a surgical tooth operation last week on my very back tooth (i do not know the english word for it - but it is last tooth that came out even when you are an adult).
i was able to eat/sleep/survive barely.
so possibly this week i will post some pics...
best.
-
Ink here is the US we call those Wisdom teeth. Well I hope the surgery went well and you heal fast. As long as you don't smoke or suck through a straw they tend to heal up quick. I have soldiers every week getting those removed and I do mean every week.
-
There should be a topic with just the finished products. Going through all forty pages takes forever and I wanna see the pretty pictures
-
+1 Kohlqez
maybe 2016 bow swap showcase
best.
-
Isn't it about time to start the 2017 swap? :)
I might do it again this time around.
-
x2 for the showcase.
-
Well start it.
-
I will try and get the sign up for next years swap up on Monday. We are still down a bow from last year. I am waiting on the bowyer to give me an update. He was supposed to have been close to shipping.
