Title: Help to Make a short recurve
Post by: ozwoody on January 01, 2016, 08:58:00 AM
Hi all it has been a long time since I was last here.
I would like to know if someone could give me some help, I would like to make a short recurve much like the great Bear Kodiac super mag 48"
A good friend of mine is in a wheelchair and has asked to make one for him, I have mad a few longbows and have the charts from Binghams. I have a side profile of the bow but do not know limb wides or where to start with core thickness for a bow anywhere from 40#to 50#.
I was thinking of making the core out of bamboo and the riser is 10.5" long with an unstrung length of 43.5".
Any thoughts?

Why not just build a replica of the bear super mag? The design works and that would remove a lot of guessing. Just a thought.

Touch base with Bjansen and Trux Turning.  They both built replicas of the Herters little 46" recurve.  They could give you a place to start as far as stack goes. What draw length does your friend have.  I build a 48" and 50" takedown if you would like to go that route, let me know and I will try to help you out.

Hi all, I have made a start on a bow thanks to peanut39350.
Form is made, laminations underway and the riser made.
I would like to put some pics of them but not sure how to.

Put your pix on Photoshop or something similar, then get the URLs from there.  Use the Full Reply Form, and you'll see where to add things.

Thank KenH but what do you mean put the pix on Photoshop then get the URL's? I edit the size of my photos with photoshop but do not see anything about URL's on there.
Thanks

I glued up one of these short curves today but I think I may of done something wrong to the form as I could not get it to come down onto the riser, no problems I worked around it by just gluing the lams and glass and I will glue the riser in later.
I used 2 0.050" by 0.001/1" vertical bamboo lams and 1.75" wide 0.050" black glass.

I've had success adding wedges (in this case dowels) to put additional pressure onto the ramps of the riser.

Ok I see that would help. But I think I cut out to much where the riser is. Think I will have to make a new form or see if I can fix this one.

Can you change the riser?

I might be able to have to sit down and have a good look and do some thinking.

if you still have the piece you cut out- you could glue it back in and re cut.

or
cut out a square area- in the offending part of the form, and glue in a new chunk- then re cut- that top side doesnt need to be as perfect as the bottom side
easy fix- dont toss the old form

I did think of that but was not sure if I could do that. I was not going to toss it.

Here's what I'd do after looking at your pictures. I'd shape the riser to fit the limb profile you have glued up already. Put the limbs and riser into the form and shim any gaps between the riser and the form and you should be good to go.
