After gaining permission, I called my good friend Rob W. And we headed to the field. He hadn't seen my score yet, but soon after arriving he this is what he seen.....

Nice and straight tree. Other than that I know zero about cutting Osage. Good for you.
-
Nice!
-
Safe to say Rob was happy!!!

nice

Nice haul. I'd take the small rounds(2" to 4") you halved and bind them back together with spacers between to allow air flow. If you don't they will warp and twist. You can always add reflex later with heat while building a bow.
-
Thanks Pat, we will do that. We have a lot to learn.
-
Fun but exhausting day. Hopefully it will make some good bows.
-
Very nice. They weren't heavy were they? LOL
-
Yes Roy...... They were plenty heavy
-
Now that's a good days work! :)
-
We didn't attempt to tackle this one. Waiting until the ground freezes to get truck closer.

Great photos. I think most of the time I like harvesting and splitting the wood more than actually making a bow from it.
-
My osage cutting days are over, partially because of back problems and partially because I cut so much I have a lifetime supply stockpiled.
I still get a giddy feeling looking at pictures of osage cutting, what an adventure!
-
I was talking to my Aunt last weekend at our Christmas get together and she was telling us how she was wanting some Hedge Apple (Osage Orange) trees removed. I have not seen them yet but she said they were big. What size chain saw did you use Perry?
I told her I would come back out in the spring to take a look at the trees. I want to make sure they are not too close to the house or power lines.
-
Looks to be some nice staves. The Osage fruits are they used for something?
-
Yup, to make baby Osage trees.. :)
-
Squirrels love eating the osage fruit. The deer will eat them once they get all mushy.
-
Some really nice trees there. That tree in the 3rd pic of the post is the straightest hedge I've ever seen.
Once the log is cut and staves split, how long does it take to dry? Does it need to be in a temperature controlled environment?
-
Thanks for the comments guys. My buddy Rob and I are new at this. I used a husqavarna 455 rancher with a 20" bar, but that wasn't required. We are looking forward to this adventure.

Those are some nice wide growth rings in the first end grain picture!
