Title: Sunburst Finish?
Post by: Chromebuck on December 01, 2015, 08:51:00 PM
Brother Izzy has a Griffin with green limbs and he claims John called in sunburst.  He also says Dave Windauer does a sunburst finish on Silver Tips.  Does anyone know anything about this?  Is it a staining process over wood veneers prior to glass?

Any help would be appreciated.

Sunburst is a recognizable feature of some higher grade Black Walnut.  Normally it's used in upper end rifle & shotgun stocks.

I'm not aware of any staining process named "Sunburst".

I do it with dyes, quite often. Apply the light color first then dark color. Let it dry. Then rub  0000 steel wool where the colors meet. Start your strokes maybe 3" apart and gradually work the strokes to 8-10" apart. You will have a sunburst when you're done.

Don't like photosucket myself, but imgur has treated me ok.
