Title: Osage with Sturgeon skins - 55# @ 29"

I just finished up this custom bow for a customer across the pond. It is an osage take-down. Stiff/narrow lever tips, backed with sturgeon skin.
Ray skin handle and buffalo rib bone overlays. Finished with shellac, followed by linseed oil and beeswax alternating coats of.

55# @ 29" 66" nock to nock.

How are the shooting characteristics of this design as compared to a well made osage flatbow or longbow? Does any design stand out as the top performer or do you find it is not the design so much as it is the quality of wood and the execution of proper building technique?

Sport hunter, I would say that execution of a particular design is more important than the design itself and performance. Of course that is a pretty general statement, and designs vary in characteristics other than arrow speed. This is my first in this lever tip design. I noticed that it was very dead in the hand (no handshock or jump). It also seemed to me that this design prefers medium to light weight arrows.

The desire to start building bows has been growing for the past few months.  This bow is just fantastic and is just what I needed to help take the plunge and just start.  What a beautiful bow!  Having a 30" draw, this is the style I've been contemplating building.  Thanks for sharing.

Glad I could help inspire you to get started. I made that plunge 4 years ago now making bows is just about all that I do.
Nothing sweeter shooting than a bow you made yourself.
