Came out of a pile of exotic wood blocks in a woodcraft store, it's 2x2x24", any idea what it is? It was a bargin.

is it pretty heavy? I bought a truck load of wood last year and have a few boards of wood that looks similar
-
Off the top of my head, I'd say it's jatoba (Brazilian Cherry).

I'd have to agree- it does finish nice too.
-
I'm with Dave... Possibly jatoba.
-
Just bought it, sanded the wax coating off for the picture. It is a very heavy wood. Thought I might use it in a riser but would like to know something more about it first.
-
Looks like ipe to me???
-
Can you show the end grain?
-
If it was covered in wax, it isn't likely jatoba.
They can Kiln dry Jatoba so there is no need in a complete wax coating. Same goes for Ipe ...and it's definitely not Ipe.

I'll try to take a couple of pics of my boards including end pics. The pieces I have that look similar are pretty heavy, like Verawood.. The wood I bought came from a guy who buys storage lockers and other large auction lots. From looking at the wood, veneer and scrap pieces I think my wood came from a shop that built high end furniture. But I still don't know what wood it is..

Thought the same thing when I saw it.
But ... If it's hard and heavy and you like the look, just decide what to call it and use it! Doesn't really matter what the name is long as it looks good!

I'm with Ben on that score! If it's hard and strong and it looks good, use it!

Been busy today and didn't get a chance to cut off an end to see what it looked like. It's covered with so much wax that I can't tell anything.
-
Cut a small piece off to see if I could get an idea, I'm more confused now. Looks almost Orange; notice the dust. Even inside feels like it's wax. Two sides have wild grain and the others almost none.

Top to bottom: Rosewood, walnut, Osage, Mystery wood, and cherry. For color comparison.

Closeup between Osage and cherry and in the side that is straight grained.

I'd put Cumaru (Brazilian Teak) into the hat of possibilities.

Sapele is my guess.
-
My guess at first look was arizona desert ironwood.
-
Here is a knife I put the handle on with ironwood.

A friend that came by also guessed ironwood, if I thought it would look anything like that knife handle I would sure use it in my next bow build for the riser.

Man ... I say you need to calculate the density, try some UV light, you could also do an extractive UV test to rule out the rosewoods. Also maybe take a good picture of well sanded end grain, that might help.

End before sanding off wax...

After sanding some. Stops up sandpaper fast, it's like it is impregnated with wax.

As Littleben says a density test would really help as well.
It looks like it could be Desert Ironwood to me as well.
