Finally received my feathers from Josh and I have a mix of primaries and secondary feathers to glue up. Usually making some arrows gets me back into practicing and ultimately back to hunting with my bow. I've been building guns and night hunting mostly have wanted to get back into shooting to get my son started. What profile is easy and effective? I've been a 5" shield guy forever but thought natural feathers, natural profile, why not?
Recommendations? My feathers are all full length.

I don't have a die cutter here at the house in my home shop. That was why I thought I would try straight fletchings.

I've only made a handful of self arrows. I cut a thin piece of wood to the shape of a parabolic feather for a template and trimmed the turkey feathers with a scissors. I singed the edge with a wood burning tool.
I'll bet straight would work fine, too.

You can make a feather burner very easily and make any shape you want. I made a burner out of a scrap of wood and some carriage bolts. I bought the ribbon from 3rivers. I used an old battery charger for the power source. I have used jumper cables and a car battery before. I traded for a young feather burner and gave my home made one away. I actually liked my home made one better. The Young burner is just more convenient because of the built in power source.

I've cut out shield cut feather with a good sharp poultry sheer scissor just using a factory cut one as a template, and they come out accurate enough for good flight.
That's definately the way to bubba-Ize it. Lol.
