I pick up some really nice bubinga this spring and recently a couple of pieces of green glass. Since I haven't built myself a bow for a few years I thought I'd put one together. Here's what I have to work with- bubinga for the riser, bamboo core and the green glass.

-
That combo will look spectacular! The green glass will really set off the bubinga, great choice.
-
That's gonna have a classically good look to it. Where'd you get that green glass?
-
Thanks- I think it will look good with that combo- I'm shooting for a bow in the mid 50# range. I got the limbs ready for glue up- while I have the glue out I'll probably start on some mosaics for the riser.
-
Dave that's going to look great. Really looking forward to seeing this finished.
-
:bigsmyl:
Can't wait
-
That is going to look good! Can't wait to see the finished product.
-
It is going to look great Dave, just like all your others. What length are you building?
-
Looks awesome!
Nice piece of bubinga, good choice with green glass!
-
Jess it's going to be 63"s.
-
Here's the first limb ready to go:

Into the form and than the hot box

-
Here's my hot box right now- we are having 100 degree days right now so I use the solar power...

The parts for the mosaic go in there too.

:bigsmyl:
-
I use solar power too! Please show how you layout the mosaic.
-
yea, a pitcher's worth a thousand words
-
There are a couple of ways to do them- when I have short scraps do them this way...
I choose random widths of wood with contrasting colors- the blank above has bubinga, bamboo and chechem and is about 6" long and 2.25" wide after they are glued up I'll clean up the blank.
This is how it looks from the end before ripping the blanks on the table saw.

-
Once I've ripped the strips I cut the pieces to fit the glass or lam that will go on the out side of the mosaic.
-
Here's a more complete step by step from a different build.
Parts:
Ripped:
Cut to width:
Pieces with the backer lam- in this case some core tuff:
-
When I rip the pieces out I get them close on the thickness-then they are glued to the backer lam:
This is why I don't worry too much about the thickness- they get run through the drum sander which evens everything out:
The other side of the backer will be glued on at the same time the mosaic is glued into the riser. I think the backer lam helps keep the mosaic from cracking when it is glued on the riser if there are curves.
-
Another way to do your mosaics is to glue up an entire strip and then you don't have to piece it together- I"m usually working with left over short scraps so use the method above- here's a picture I got from my buddy Martin that show the other way..

Cool stuff David!

I made some progress on the riser. The limb pad angles are cut on my table saw:

Second mosaic done:

Using the good old Bingham's jig- I remarked the center lines and have had good luck with it since then:
My fancy tapping jig helps me get a 90 degree cut with the tap- after a few threads have been cut I remove it and finish the process:

Thanks Trux!!
Backer lam... :banghead: should have been able to figure that one out..

Overlays going on the riser:

My redneck overlay press- there is a pressure strip between the hose and riser- it works well:

Here it is looking like a bow- everything still needs shaping but its getting there:

-
Very nice David, great job!
-
I'am ripping that firehose leather strap thing e off.
How much air pressure do you use?
Me like
-
Thanks-I only use 25-30 psi- works on all styles of bows.
-
man that is good looking bow. I am always amazed at the talent of people building laminated bows you guys make it look easy maybe one of these days I will try it. what thickness is your laminations if you dont mind me asking?
-
Stretch its got 1 .080 parallel and 1 .115 taper (.002)
I glued on the tip overlays and a thumb rest on the riser today-
-
Cant wait to see more :)
:campfire:

-
Very nice!!
-
Thanks- I'm chipping away at it. Got a string on it and checked the weight, tiller and limb twist. It's right on track for weight- 56@28 And should finish around 53#s once I adjust the tiller. The alignment was pretty good too-I had to deepen one string nock with a few strokes of the file to get it tracking straight.

Lookin good David! Neat little trick with the 2 files to get the nocks the same!
-
Yea Kenny that works well for me- I made some progress on the riser today...

Awesome Trux!

Well I had some time today and got everything sanded and sprayed. It finished 52@28" and seems to smoke an arrow. Here's a couple of pictures of the riser with some finish-

Thanks all- the bubinga riser was a good match for the green glass. I'll put it together later and get some pictures of the whole bow.
