Title: Where can you get phenolic blocks for a riser?
Post by: beachbowhunter on April 15, 2015, 01:22:00 PM
I searched but couldnt find a post about where you guys get phenolic riser blocks. Dale Stahl only has pieces up to 1.5" wide. I dont know of another source.

Thanks Kenny. Already checked with Dale and his max thickness is 1.5". Sent an email to Rosewood and a plastics place here in San Diego someone mentioned. Have to wait and see what shakes loose.

I glued these several pcs with smooth-on, no probs, and you can't see the glue lines between any of it....

I believe it was 2- 1/4" black in center, then 1/16" red , then 1/8" black, then 1/4" walnut on outside scales....

I have received a quote on a sheet of the stuff. If I get a couple people to pre order it, I'll have the sheet made up.

1 3/4" paper phenolic (mikarta is a trade name).

Pricing would be $1.5 per square inch at 1 3/4" thick, ie. 2" x `1 3/4" x 18" =(2 x 18) = 36 x $1.5= $54 plus shipping of course.

Paper is plenty strong for a riser block and will give you the blackest look without as much pattern in it. It is what Bear is using on their black beauty super Kodiak.
P.M. me if you are interested.
thanks, bigjim

Wow, I have a lot of 1 3/4" phenolic left.

It turned out real nice so I had to build a new recurve for my self. I used a solid phenolic riser block and put in a marketry stripe like the rest of my recurves. I overlayed belly and back with Asian ebony and black and white ebony and then I polished it...my first "personal" polished bow. It turned out beautiful if I must say myself. I even resisted the urge to sell it to the many people who asked the price last weekend.

I know, pictures...but even if I had them, I couldn't post them...maybe after I get back from Mississippi.
Thanks, bigjim

McMaster-Carr is a good supplier.

Also, a phenolic wheel of 8-10" from a material- handler supplier, could also be a good source, too!
