Title: Finished my take down, not perfect but it shoots. (new pics)
Post by: ffdiggs on March 10, 2015, 02:11:00 PM
So I was killing some time between helping a buddy make a self bow and waiting for my new saw to show up, and I thought heck I should take a couple of other wise unusable pieces of osage and try to make a take down. I've had the take down sleeve lying around for quite some time now, so I figured I better put it to use. Got my limbs pretty much shaped to profile and the sleeves fitted. My question is How tight should the sleeves be when I put them on the limbs? I figured I don't want them to tight other wise the glue will just scrape off when I slide them on. So I left a little slop in them to accommodate a generous portion of MT-13. I thought I read some where that the MT-13 expands a little when it dries. will post pics as soon as I upload them.

That's a little loose.  Just make sure you get the two pieces set so they line up well enough to lay out the bow.  The epoxy should fill the gaps well enough.  I'd put tape on the ends after glue up so the epoxy doesn't run out.

I'm thinking of trying to take up some of the slop with fiberglass mesh tape. I should still be able to get a good tight fit and bond that way.

Did a little basic heating and straightening on it, next step floor tillering.  (http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad129/wdigby71/osage%20take%20down/IMG_1349_zpsldxna7ao.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/wdigby71/media/osage%20take%20down/IMG_1349_zpsldxna7ao.jpg.html)

got this small crack in the fade out while trying to take out some twists and turns. I super glued it and clamped it down. Do you think I will be ok?

That doesn't look good to me.

You might be OK. I would be sure that it doesn't bend in that area at all.

Yikes! I agree with Roy......scary looking(the crack, not Roy   :D   ). Looks like it was bent backwards too far while inducing backset?? You might be OK if you fill it with epoxy or crazy glue though.

Fill that crack with super glue and clamp it. It should be OK being that it is on the compression side.

well the crack seems to be holding, exercised it a bit on the tree. Hopefully after a few arrows down range it is still holding up.

Heres a couple of full draw picks. I like to flip the bow end for end and try to get a different perspective on it.

That'll be just fine . Looks like you may have tried to bedn it before it was hot enough, or, the same thing happens if it gets too hot. Try to get the fades more gradual next time, it'll help a lot.

I have used the Torges patches on a few bows, but even using unibond on the patch, I have found them to just lift a little around the edges over time, so I have taken to wrapping them all with silk thread and ca- any way my point is, I might just wrap that repair with something and ca.
IMHO.- not preachin' just observing!   :)

It seems to be holding for now, but I might do what you said fujimo. I got a little bit of sinew that I could wrap it with, that should do the trick.

Heres the final product. Its my first take down and the first time I put snake skins on.

The limb on the right is the top limb, its a little weaker than the bottom limb, gives me about 1/8 in positive tiller.
