Title: Blade selection for new Bandsaw, let me hear it.
Post by: ffdiggs on March 05, 2015, 03:52:00 PM
Well after much research and advice from you all here on another thread, I have made up mymind on a new band saw. Gonna place an order for a new Grizzly bandsaw.
 http://grizzly14-px.rtrk.ca/products/G0513X2
So it goes without saying I need new blades too. Figure I would just oder the timber wolf blades at the same time. What is every ones favorite blades or what would be a good variety for me to order. Don't know much about different tooth patterns. I can go up to 1" in size. so I figure I would get a 1" Resaw blade 3 tpi, and maybe a few 3/8" blades. Don't figure I need any smaller than that. But I could be wrong. Thats why I'm asking you all. Hope to order everything on monday. Gotta break my piggy bank open and dig the change out of the ash tray in my truck. but its gonna get done

I would go for 1/2" with 6tpi. Plus the 1". Timber wolf is good but big $$$. I get my blades locally.

Roy took the words right out of my mouth... I don't use smaller than 1/2" for bow making and most of the time there's a 3/4" 4tpi hook tooth blade on there. I too get them locally... well about halfways between me and Roy a guy makes them to order. I'm about due for some more now that you mention it.

It's not right to put cheap tires on a fast car .... I say go for it and get some fancy pants blades to go with that fancy pants saw ...

Then again I'm still using a 9" tabletop saw, so what do I really know ....

bandsawbladesinc. is less than 15 minutes from my house. they stock and sell "sterling" saw blades by Diamond Saw Works. The biggest wood I cut is 12/4 or 8/4 wood not logs like Roy. I mostly buy 1/2" 4tpi blades, I also use a swing jig to cut riser swoops. I have a 4 tpi 1/2" carbide blade for cutting fiberglass and phenolic. Buy several quality blades, you will use them..

a 3/4 3-4tpi blade will track better than a 1/2 for cutting lams. 3/8 for radius cuts in risers etc. Bi-metal m42 blades with 6/10 tooth pattern for glass.

I was buying a variety of $15-$20 blades.  A lot of them! I got tired of a blade going to crap in the middle of shaping a riser (with bo-tuff glass accents) so I dug deep and bought a 1/2" 4tpi (I believe) carbide tipped blade. It has served me well, and still going strong! Well worth the price.

Yeah, since the best blade depends on the application, we should probably say what each of us uses them for... I don't cut glass much any more. I mostly cut into big nasty osage staves, create boards, and resaw lams and boards for backed bows.... no glass.
