Title: Bamboo Backed Massaranduba --- Roy inspired
Post by: wcdurand on February 24, 2015, 06:53:00 AM
Man was I negative when Fuji said he build his Tri-lam in two days. This bow took me weeks -- but then I am stil a beginner. Luckily he saved me from depression. We'll here it is .

Starting out and getting the form ready.

Did it a little bit different than Roy.. Maybe I should listen to him more...
Bamboo, Rosewood powerlam and massarandaba.

First glued up .050 parallel massarandaba to the bamboo

Then readied the cherry tapered lamination and the powerlam for next glue up

Started the riser. Laminations of cherry "Patryshout" and "tambotie"

Getting ready for last glue up. Massaranduba belly lams, 1/8 inch thick but tapered to easily bend up the riser fades when glue up is done.

Nice bow and some good shooting too!
So, now I'm curious, what happens if you burn tambootie?    :dunno:

tambootie is a beautiful wood- dark brown heartwood, with a beautiful creamy sapwood.
and it is super hard- burns beautifully- makes lovely coals- however its pretty toxic. the smoke will make you sick- bad headaches and if you get enough of it it will get you puking.
the sawdust will kill dogs- and i believe there have been human fatalities.
those of us from the area- will pick it up the instant it takes light on a fire- it has a very distinctive smell.
makes great fence posts, as even the termites wont eat it!
i believe you can cook on the coals, just dont get the smoke on the food, but i would never take the chance- when there is enough other firewood around   :)
cheers

Wood is really beautiful and make incredible furniture knive handles etc.Wood is oily so need some clean-up before gluing. The smoke can keep you reading a stack of magazines in the outhouse.have you ever heard of jumping beans? Certain times of year when the tree sheds its seed a small little worm stays in this seed and they can jump a few feet into the air. Keep the children playing with the seed
