Here ya go Cantaloupe-boy wonder.. 2015 :)
Yesterday a buddy and I was shooting the latest tri lam I posted the build about a month or so ago. Shipped it out to it's new owner today.. Hope he likes it.. It's a little heavy for my old arse to shoot.
This is my buddy Kenny, I gotta learn him how to shoot soon. He shoots decent groups, but if he would stand up straight and flex those back muscles, he would improve drastically.
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/shooting1.png) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/shooting1.png.html)
This is one group he shot, not bad at 10 yards.
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/shooting3.png) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/shooting3.png.html)
This is me.. LOL
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/shooting2.png) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/shooting2.png.html)
And my group at 10 yards... :)

:biglaugh: :biglaugh:
\\i'll buy that for a dollar!
-
ya must be short drawing- ol fella- with such poor penetration!
-
sh#!.. that dont sound quite like it was what i meant to say :o :o
-
What's ya mean, they are in there 2 inches at least.. LOL
-
Lol!!!!! I had 2 boxes delivered to my house today. Hummm, I wonder what that could be?!
-

I'm guessing you've been saying that your whole life.
-
I got 2 boxes too. olive ash burl and Santos rosewood for veneers.. I just need some good clear glass..later today I might have time to start a one piece recurve for a friend, not sure of woods right now..
-
How soon you gonna stop and visit, boy? :)
-
Finishing up my latest Hill bow. Yew under clear glass with cocobolo riser. Had to go with a wipe on poly because the spray kind just gummed up and never harden even after two coats of sanding sealer on the cocobolo. Got two coats of high gloss on it right now. Will put another one on tomorrow. Let it dry and then sign the bow. Clear spray of satin spar over that and then put the leather handle wrap on it. Will post pictures once I finish it hopefully next week.
-
Bobby, how about a picture of those two woods?
-
Sounds like a sweet bow Justin. Can't wait to see it.
-
Man you're consistent Roy. I swear I've seen you shoot similar groups in the past ;)
-
LOL, John. That picture has started a few arguments with guys who are too serious.. :)
-
And wif mismatched arras too
-
Anyone ever use spray on spar urethane over wipe on Polly. I put 3 coats of sealer on my bow again and put a new first layer of wipe on poly but hate using wipe on... I wanna put 5 coats on and this wipe on stinks... Any thoughts?
-
Finally got my spray finish on "Snowy Day". Also started on a new bow. It's gonna be a beaut. 64" NTN, 1-1/4" wide for the first 6" tapering down o 1/2" nocks. It's rounded all over and sexy as hell. Still too heavy but looking good so far.
I'll take some pics and post in a bit. But my wife and 2 teenage daughters are starting a Downton Abbey marathon and I'm going back to the shop :) Too much girl stuff in here!
-
Here's the bow I made yesterday. I called it "One Day..." since it was started and finished all in one day. The only thing I had to do today was to wrap the handle. It still needs a couple coats of spray poly since I ran out.
It's 64" total length. 1-1/4" for 6" tapering to 3/8" nocks. Basically it's a Torges style with a rounded belly except I did not make a bulbous handle. Ended up 50# @ 27".
As I was working on it, my 17 year old son came into the shop and asked who the bow was for. I didn't have a destination in mind but as he kiddingly said "Me!", I knew who would get it. I haven't made him a bow for many years and this one will serve him well if he gets into trad hunting,"One Day...".
-
Those all wood bows you guys make are sure impressive. I'm working on a laminated one now with a bocote riser, worked on the tips today. A good way to spend a snowy day.

I put this little baby together!!! -
Shoveled out animal pens all day ... Not the way to spend a snowy day or any other.
Now it's just waiting for the food .... Wings, guacamole, and homemade pizza ....
-
Sweet bow John!!
Randy, ya got some blocks to put under that easy chair? It's too low to set and saw!!
Better'n TV for sure!!
-
Nice bow and a nice saw too !
-
Very nice, John.
Saw is ok I guess

Looking good and no gloves? Man that guy is tough. :scared:

Congrats Randy. There's nothing quite the same as enjoying a new power tool.

good job on the students too!!
-
Y'all's a Buncha danged rebels!!! :knothead:
But your bows are "ok" I guess!!
-
At Doctors office now.. Fixin to get a shot and some antibiotics. Hope I can work in shop some tonight..I made a ILF recurve form last week and I need to made some wedges and glue up some limbs.
-
Another coat of clear on the bow... Got two great workouts in as well as a 6 mile run. Gonna be in top top shape this spring hunting season
-
I started a long overdue project today.............I started cleaning up the shop area................wife said shes had enough and I dont blame her. I let it get way out of control. Should be done in about three days to start my trade bow.
Robert hope you feel better bud. Get Helens new ILF bow up when you can
-
Glued up another riser, that is 3 sitting ready..have 2 sets of limbs just have to make a third when I get around to it.. :biglaugh:
-
Shawn, I've been there. If I let it get bad I start to hear about it.
-
Went out to clean up the bench but before it was done there was suddenly this oak board bow blank in the vice??!! Not sure how that happened. Wife came out to the garage and pointing at the bench says "are you going to clean that up?". With a perfectly straight face I answered "I already did, that's a whole new mess!".
Weather is so nice today. Took a few pics of the project and will try to put them up...eventually.
-
Here are a few pics of this oak pyramid.
Pyramid is a design I like to play with and boards are so dang inexpensive that it makes for a dandy experimentation medium.
Not classy like so many of you all build, but kinda fun.
This is the board with a walnut block glued up for the riser. Did this months ago.
A look at the board. You can see it is not ideal and will probably need a back.
Lay out at the tips.

rough riser shape.

starting to look like a bow.

Elm tip overlay glued up with TBIII. Wonder if it will stay on? In the past these have been attached with epoxy or super glue.

Roughed out string nocks.
on the tillering stick. I have yet to build one like Roy and Bowjunkie showed us, but it's in the works.
Thats as far as it will be drawn until it is backed. Could be tomorrow or next month!
-
Looking good, Monterey. I'm sure not trying to talk you out of backing your bow, but that grain looks pretty straight to me. Also makes me want to make a pyramid bow one of these days.
I have to check out this thread more often 'cuz you guys are posting great bows on here.
Kinda disappointed in Roy, though. I thought for sure he was going to claim that his group was from 30 yards. :)
-
Mike, I agree with your wife, that work bench is a mess.... But I am the boss in "MY" bow shop. Until the door opens.. LOL
Now Greg I tell the truth one time and ya gotta mess with me.. :)
-
Take five, it does look pretty good in the pics but there is a little jiggle in the grain on one limb about 8 inches from the fade. I like a little jiggle but not in a bow limb. Went grocery shopping yesterday but forgot to ask for paper bags. Might be something else around the house for backing.
Roy, it's never going to get clean. I keep adding projects and leaving them sitting half finished.
Nice day coming up tomorrow but the wife says she wants to go for a drive to Rocky Mountain National Park. At least will vet a chance to shoot a few elk with the camera but probably no bow fun.
-
Got a sweet little 58" osage shorty just about ready to string. It's got a 3-1/2" rigid handle, 1-1/2" fades. 1-1/4" wide for half the limbs. Gonna make a 50# at 27" bow out of her. Debating whether or not to sinew and recurve...
Also got to play with my bees. This was the first day since the day after Christmas they were flying good.

-
Pretty cool, John..
-
they look happy to me John. I see some mead or beer in your future :campfire:
-
You know, I saw a couple of honey bees flying around yesterday. It was warm for sure, I was in a t-shirt working around the house. Put in some concrete footers for one of those inexpensive car canopies that blew away in the wind a week ago. Turns out the ground was still frozen though, the auger didn't like that much.
Then I hit the range with a friend. Weather here was just perfect.
-
Put a bow in oven yesterday afternoon..shedua riser, amberboo taper, Santos rosewood under clear glass. This glass is some I had in storage since 2011 and might be fairly streak free??. Early this morning I went into the shop for a few minutes..I had 65 psi in fire hose..I pulled bow blank out of the form and it looked good. I will Grind it to shape and add limb overlays later today.
-
ordered some bow making materials...
little hickory, some maple, bit of osage, some glue..
also pledged not to tease my Wife about her luck with her new van anymore...it is her birthday today.
Bought a new van for her Jan 30th.
She smacked a deer in a bad snowstorm Feb 2nd.. :knothead:
..she and all passengers were just fine. :)
Shoulda heard the words coming outta her sweet self...lol it was pretty impressive even to me.
Tell ya what though, there was some talk from her about getting better with her bow so she could thin the herd a bit..though the way she put it was a lot more fun...lol
-
Hah! That reminds me of the way my wife started giving me a hard time this season. The words coming out of her were aimed at the time I wasted in the woods hunting with no venison to show for it. She figured she would just start running some deer over for the freezer and I'd have more free time for her honey-do list. Of course, her van is old and she probably figured she could kill two birds with that stone and end up with a new van to boot.
-
She must be watching as you practice.. LOL
-
started working on a tri tonight.
Basically just got things sanded down to thickness and tapered the core.
It was nice to see some bright yellow dust again!
-
Atta boy...
-
Cut some billets out of some Ohio Osage today. Awesome growth rings on this wood.
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/friday1.png) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/friday1.png.html)
Got the second coat of tung oil on a Tri Lam we are making for an 11 year old boy we don't even know. My buddy from Ohio who gave us the Osage knows a young fellow that could use a bow. So we were happy to help the boy out.
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/friday2.png) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/friday2.png.html)
Bottled up the wine tonight too..
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/friday4.png) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/friday4.png.html)
And the puppy is getting big, 3 months old and is 19 pounds. Gonna be a big girl I think.. :)
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/friday3.png) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/friday3.png.html)
-
cool pup. mate.
-
What kind of wine?
-
Concord is the dark stuff and Chardonnay is the light stuff..
Wayne lets see a recent picture of your pup..
-
gonna be doing some more blood trails tomorrow- will try and get my daughter to catch some short video or at least some pics- he is all nose- literally and figuratively !!!
well that wine has to be a step up from that stuff in cans (http://yoursmiles.org/tsmile/disgust/t9409.gif) (http://yoursmiles.org/t-disgust.php) :D :D
-
Dang Roy, you make the purtiest bows! One of these days I'll give boo another try. Just broke my heart for all that work and when I tried to long string it....C R A C K!!!! :banghead: :banghead:
-
Nice puppy! I'll throw in my guess now of 60lbs at 1.5yrs.
-
Crit, I had my share of failures in the early years. That taught me a lot.. Biggest thing is a nice even tiller. And I have leaned towards a longer bow the past few years. 64 to 66 is my standard now ah days. Lot less stress on that boo. I love boo backed bows, but it can break your heart at times...
Ya prolly Ben, I'm betting 80 to 85 when she is full grown. We had a black lab female that went about 80#. I'm thinking Annie is going to be a bit heavier.. She is very well built for a puppy. And so smart, 3 months old and she goes to the door and sits there and cries to go out when she has to potty. That impresses the heck out of me... Bad news is, she is a bed hog, LOL... She sleeps right between the wife and I. I wake up and her nose is under my chin, or her feet are pressed against my back. Or her head is across my legs.. But I just smile cause I love dogs...
Had her down at the pond the other day, ice is pretty thick so I left her walk out. Momma freaked out though. But where she was is only about 3 foot deep. Can't wait to have her retrieving sticks and decoys once the water warms up. Nothing like a lab jumping off the bank into the water.. :)
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/anniepond.png) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/anniepond.png.html)
-
Roy, it's been so long not even sure I remember what length that bow was. I do know I tend to like the longer bows best. My favorite was a 68". Finally hit the aspirin at 20 yds. No joke, I've even got a witness. She thought I had shot myself 'cause of all the whooping and jumping up and down! My pug, cookie, is a bed hog also. How can something so small need so much room? Bows, dogs, a good woman, ain't life grand?
-
LOL on aspirin whoppen. Dogs, women, and bows.. Ya baby.
-
They grow so fast! Our yellow lab hogs my daughter's bed, too. When he knows that she's going to bed, he'll run upstairs and lay down right in the middle of her bed and won't move. She literally has to push him off the bed. Then he'll jump back up and curl up at the foot of the bed. :)
-
nice pic Roy!
-
Just finished up this one...66" ntn 43# @31" Curly Hickory veneers - Sugar berry core wood - Cocobolo overlays - Cocobolo and hickory riser.

Very nice, Cameron.
-
Wow, that's a beauty!!
-
Now ya know what they look like getterboy...
-
I made a jig for shaping ILF wedges on my pattern sander..I also opened up the tip of my mini hvlp touch up gun from 1.00mm to 1.40mm. I am going to use it to spray Krystal gloss and dull. edit..took Helen to Outback for dinner, then we boxed up a recurve bow I made to send to California.
-
Beautiful bow there bother Cameron! Makes me want to give a takedown a try. :) :clapper:
-
Got the osage shorty all tillered out. She's 45 at 28" just as targeted. 57-1/2" NTN, flipped tips, slender little rigid handle, sweet as can be. Wish it wasn't so danged cold so I could stand to shoot her outside. I'll try and get some pics up tomorrow.
Also worked on a static recurve BBO I started about 12 years ago :) I am struggling with the tip alignment but am getting close. Might put her back on the shelf for another 10 years while I think it through!
-
been doing trail work with my new tracking pup most evenings- did an awesome part blood, part scent trail this evening. this pup is amazing- i have never seen a scent dog work like this before :) :) extremely happy!
edit- hey i have just learnt how to post vids here- some ol chap in pa, helped out- thanks Roy :D
my daughter was videoing, its a bit shakey- always trying to slow this pup down- need to make the trails more difficult!!- things are just too easy for him!

going out to prep a stand site that I scoped out last year. Just a little limb trimming today... -30 outside.
Maybe do a little ice fishing.
-
Very cool, Wayne.... Great dog..
-
My wife and I ground and vacuum packed about 80 lbs of venison chop meat.
-
Wayne....I really enjoyed your pup video, makes me want to go out and get one.
-
I was having a hard time figuring out which one was the dog, then I seen rope and collar... LOL
-
:biglaugh:
we used tracking dogs in s. africa- when we were hunting there- and they were excellent- but i have never seen a dog "lock onto' a scent trail like these dogs do- you could throw a grenade next to him- and it wouldnt stop him.
if you ever want to get one Al- call me- i will give you the right place to go- i did a lot of research on these dogs- very good breeders are few and far between.
-
Called in and eliminated a yote today. Normally I use my bow for all hunting, but these need thinned, they ate a deer last fall before the hunter got out of stand and looked for it....
-
Atta boy.
-
Nice bow Cunruhshoot and the dog video was great, them noses are amazing. Bue--.
-
Went to my Son's 5th grade "Science Night" at the school.
Basic physics..forces, friction, gravity, Newton's laws..etc
He was a bit of a star as he kept answering the questions shot out to the crowd.
I was/am a proud Dad!
Then we made gravity cars from cardboard, wood skewers, straws, milk caps, and tape.
Raced them down a ramp for time.
We didn't win the races but it was a good time nonetheless.
-
Don't know how to act.. It's 30 degrees here. Snowing like heck but at least it's above zero for a change.. :) Took the puppy to the vet for more shots. 13 weeks old, 25.9 pounds.. Wholly crap.. :)
-
30 degrees :scared:
It's still only 19 here. I just came in from flinging a few. My fingers hurt from the cold. At least I didn't have to search for any in the snow.
-
Pushin 50 here, Zwickey and I took a walk on the home place and found a matched set of sheds bout 8 feet apart in the clover patch. Saw em from a hundred yards! Easiest ones ever!

-
Nice find Kenny.
It ain't fair that you don't have any snow on the ground.
-
Purty cool ole boy.. Neat pup... Bout the only way you can get horns is when Zwickey finds em.. :)
-
It sure helps!! :D
-
Cloudy and 65 here in south Ms. Started to wear shorts today. Don't smile yet, it'll be 100+ with 98% humidity before you know it! Still like the heat better than the cold thought. :saywhat:
-
Ouch...
-
Yep, makes unsealed wood act like a wet noodle. Ever try and tiller a wet noodle? When it bends it seems to stay that way. Just saying......
-
I've been playing with the oak pyramid a bit. Had a few days of decent weather, but now we're back to the deep freeze.
Was bending and examining the glue joint at the riser and discovered this!
Squeezed some super glue into the opening but decided it may not be enough. Since I was paper backing the bow with grocery bag, thought maybe four layers of bag on the joint might solve the problem so on they went with TBIII.
The grocery bag backing.
A crisis of faith had me peel the bag off the fade with the intent of applying some automitive fiberglass mat, so off it came.
and on went the fiberglass.
It's too dang cold to do any more right now. For some reason the wife does not want me sanding in the house!
Any thoughts on how this is going to hold together?
-
dont know if any amount of backing will help this- the handle may still try and pop off. you need a different transition from the handle to the limb
-
If the fade extended further onto the limb it would be less likely to pop off. The fade you have is ending abruptly where the limb is doing some bending and causing the glue joint to separate. New handle with longer fades should take care of that problem. Good luck.
-
Thanks for the comments. My hopes aren't high for this bow's survival, but I'll see it through to the end, whatever that might be.
Fujimo, the backing is just a bit of insurance because there was one little squiggle in the edge grain. It probably did not need backing but many of my bows end up with the grand kids so a bit of extra safety is in order.
mwosborn, I had to think what you said through a couple times and now get it. That would be the way to go. If I thought I could pull that handle off I would and replace it but it's not likely to come off clean.
-
Do you have a bandsaw?
-
And a belt sander?
-
Yes, have both the band saw and sander. The band saw is useless but the Rigid oscillating belt is great. I see what you two are driving at and may succumb. OTOH, am inclined to see this through and start another employing lessons learned.
-
hear you on the backing, mike- good idea- its cheap insurance anyway :D especially with precious cargo!
i was reticent to explain the theory earlier- purely because i have the idea in my head- but its a little more difficult to put down on paper -so to speak!
but the board the bow is built out of needs to be thicker than the actual finished thickness of the bow- at the handle area- so in other words- some of that ramp that goes up the handle- actually needs to be part of the same board as the limbs- and then the handle is glued atop that- that minimizes flex in the handle area- so that glue line is not unduly stressed.
now i have seen some folk use multiple thin lams-1/4" or so to build up the handle- and that seems to really make a difference- but as MW said a longer handle- with more gradual ramps will also help a lot, especially with the lighter poundage bows.
but i sure like to build "bend thru the handle" bows- so that is also an option- but you still need thicker wood in the handle area- ('cos one narrows it for the handle usually)- to get the correct bend overall.
good luck- its all bow building- in all its forms!!
cheers mate
wayne
-
Cut the handle off and then glue on another full width handle piece and then make it look like this.
Thin the limbs outside of the handle about 1/16" and then tiller.
-
Wayne, that is what I plan to do with the next one. 4est trekker does it that way with a band saw. Mine was cut to 1/2" thick on a table saw. My band saw is not up to the task, but ill try cutting most of the way with the table saw and finish the balance by hand. If I had any class, I'd do it all with hand tools!
The other choice is to avoid the saw altogether and remove all excess wood with the Rigid.
John, your fix makes perfect sense and as much as I appreciate the value of your advice, I'm going ahead as is if only to satisfy my curiosity.
-
Perhaps the easiest way if you don't wanna do a lot of cutting, scraping etc on the belly, is this:
Decide on limb thickness, say 1/2", then cut a 1/8" strip and a 3/8" strip, and laminate them together with a thin (1/8") "power lam" in between in the handle area.
That should stiffen the handle area enough that when you glue on a block it won't pop off.

thers the answer mike.
ben knows!!- i have never tried that- but i do know it works

Ben, that's a dandy idea. :clapper:

I'm finishing up a dozen surewood shafts and whittling on a hunk of hedge that I hope to make into a bow. It's got some twists and turns and a couple of knots so it ain't exactly been an easy build.

Crittercrapper, don't make me come out there, boy.
LMAO

Worked on a wood carving yesterday. This will be my first ... Been pondering it for a while. Finally made a sketch a couple months back, and finally bust out the carving tools. Going to be a scene of a lone wolf on a ridge in the forest .... If I dont bugger it up too badly.
Pics to come soon.

Sounds cool Ben.
What kind of wood ya carving?

Wood carver 2 made this for me..

Looks good Ben!
-
Very nice, Ben.
-
HEY ! Looks pretty dang nice thus far
-
Ben, if you hadn't said it's your first carving, I would never have guessed. It's coming along nicely.
Basswood can be really fuzzy and hard to sand. Before you varnish, seal with a sanding sealer and you should have an easy time getting rid of the fuzz.
Dave.

Watched snow fall all day. This is Jasper, AL and we have at least 8" on the ground and it's still falling. Kept me from shipping my swap bow, since the county is shut down.
-
Snowing here too. Wife and I went out for lunch and by the time we started home the streets are covered and slick. Does not bother me cause I grew up a Yooper. Gotta keep an eye on some of the goofballs out there though!
Those folks in your neck of the woods are probably having a bit of a time adapting!
-
Something I rarely get a chance to do, took a walk in the snow behind house. No squirrel or rabbits but did see some deer, go figure. Really enjoyed it though.Full draw picture of latest osage self bow finished December 2014, 68" 47#@28"a little slow at posting pictures. fresh out of the oven and edge sanded a little.., still has some tape and smooth on on edges. Attemting to make a drill jig for these ILF limbs..I might have to buy one from woodcraft store this weekend.. veneer is Olive Ash Burl, it has some dark knots in it. Very nice indeed!!!

Lovely!

I glued this one up weeks agp..Its for a local guy in my home town, it will be his first bow. I need this one to really look good soooo..I am upgrading to Krystal finish from the Spar Urethane Ive been using since 2009. Big Jim is shipping me Dull and Gloss Krystal tomorrow. Veneers are Santos Rosewood, riser is Shedua. This afternoon I cut veneers and glass for a set of ILF limbs. I already had the morado wedges made up. I'm using Red Elm tapers from Troy Breeding. back veneers will be Figured Sapele and Belly veneers will be Curly KOA. I might glue up the limbs tomorrow, too tired tonight..***update***got a second wind..got another limb glued up and in oven.
-
Pretty stuff Robert.
Just got done profiling a backing ,tapering some lams, and setting up the jig. Need to do some more tapering when a sled comes in.
Shot an old BBO I made a while back..hadn't shot it in a while. Liked shooting it so much I decided to change my jig to something a tad more similar to the bbo's setup rather than what I initially intended...prolly for the better...lol
I'm hoping that switching from beer to bourbon helps the build too..seems to be working fine so far..
-
Robert, I'm hoping for a report and some pics on the Krystal application. So far I've used try oil, wipe on poly and helmsman. They have worked well but there is always something better.

Thanks guys, I'm not sure if she'll make a shed dog or just a biscuit hound, but she gets me out there!! LOL

Kinda quiet here. Guessing that many of us are cooped up by cold weather. As for me, my shp is party the driveway, partly the patio and a tiny corner of the garage. It did creep up to 24 deg today so I did a bit on the oak pyramid.
Rounded the edges and did a bit of sanding on the fiberglass patches. Dang, they are ugly!
Put it on the long string and checked the tiller. Looks pretty good so put the short string on and picked a lower limb. It's still a bit stiff but should come down with sandpaper.
Drew it to about 20" 100 times with no ill effects. It drew 32# @23" on the scale with the long string. Looks like it's headed for 40 to 45.
It scares me to draw it! Can't take my mind off that riser joint.
-
looks great robert

Managed to rip off the tip of my finger using the bandsaw while making arrow footings. Bue--. :knothead:
-
(http://yoursmiles.org/tsmile/tears/t2333.gif) (http://yoursmiles.org/t-tears.php) sorry bud!!
man those things bite- ouch!
how bad is it- at least its not your string hand!
-
ouch..glad it was only the tip.. I goofed around in the shop today, mostly cleaning up and some sanding on the Rosewood bow. I deboned a wild hog ham last night..I injected most of it with a smoked applewood flavored marinade. Put the injected meat into our crockpot..tenderized and flattened the rest with my meat hammer, mixed a little Tony Chasere seasoning into the flour and fried it in Coconut oil..Made some white pepper gravy, sweet corn and gold mashed potatoes..it was awesome..today I pulled the crockpot meat apart and added Cattlemans Gold BBQ sauce, while that was warming up on the stove I sliced up some sour dough bread, buttered it up and grilled/toasted it in a frying pan.. yes I'm a fat boy.. I will not have access to my hog place till after Turkey season end of April, Then I will be looking for some fresh meat..
-
Oh man I hope you didn't get it too badly. Those bandsaws are a dangerous bunch.
-
Been making some Asian archery supplies for myself and for St. Jude's auction. Still trying to figure out how to make tsurumaki, but I have some ideas.

Robert, I gladly gains five pounds just reading your post! :)
Bue, you OTOH, made me cringe.

This was a good weekend. Turned out that I got some R&R, a few things accomplished, and time with DU2 (Daughter Unit #2).
Saturday morning I went to the range to measure up where I need to build storage for all the educational bows. (I'm tired of shuttling them from my house to the club.) They had cancelled the shoot that morning because of conditions (snow.) But I had a great time shooting the 3D course anyway. I passed a group of 8 wheelie guys on Target 3 and then had virgin snow to stomp through the rest of the way. When I finished the course, I could see that they had made it all the way to Target 7. They must have been out there until dinner! Anyhow, I shot better than I expected to. I only had to search for arrows on one target where I went over the back. (All my shots seemed high.) But overall it was a peaceful and enjoyable morning!
Saturday afternoon and Sunday I spent working in the shop. I needed to clean some stuff up, so I found a new place to store my laminations and glass which should make a difference. I also decided to finish up a spine tester I started to build probably 2 years ago:
It seemed like a great idea for precision when I dreamed it up back then. But the dial indicator has a spring on the plunger that counteracts the 2# weight. Now the spring force is small and is a linear function of the deflection that can be corrected for, so it can all still work out just fine. But that combined with needing to subtract the two readings on the indicator means I need to run a laptop or the like next to me. So turned out to be very precise, but a pain. But now it's done. Most importantly I even put up a spot on the wall to hang it out of the way when not using it.
DU2 spent a good chunk of the day out in the shop with me, mainly turning firewood into a mess on the lathe:
She's worked on the lathe before, but yesterday was her first time learning to properly use the skew chisel. She also learned how to use the chop saw, drill press, and nail gun. Then I made her design and build a paper towel rack for my shop. I think she's got potential.
-
David...you a had a great day :notworthy: Enjoy those daughters of yours, they grow so quick. I miss those days with my daughter's,but now I get to pick on my grandkids.Thats a bunch of fun too. :)
-
Good day ya had, David and nice shooting...
-
David, you are clearly a great dad.
My two girls are grown and have their own families. But, they live very close by and have given up five grandsons and two granddaughters, so life is good.
I got thinking about that dang pyramid oak some more and how at 20" it seems very heavy but on the scale it was 32# @ 23" on the long string. Then it dawned on me; the long string!!
It's not going to a full 23", so it's going to be heavier than 32# on the normal string. Gotta put it back on the scale with a normal string and see what it does. Really cold and snowing right now so maybe later. :)
-
Definately good times David! My middle daughter ( I say middle because I have 3) helped me glue up my swap bow today. Like I said, good times!
-
Braved the cold and put the pyramid on the scale with the short string. Came in at 33# @23" so apparently the long string is not long enough to make a difference.
Wife prohibits filing string nocks at the kitchen table!
-
Shot a new 64" static recurve today. It's somewhere around 75-80 at my DL, but 45-50 for a regular draw at 28". Won't be keeping it, it's not easy to use from the wheelchair. Shoots rather well, though.
-
? What is your draw length, 35"?
-
Robert, we are heading your way tomorrow and hope I get a chance Sat. to leave some finger prints on that fancy lammed bow you posted.
-
Greg, I left part of a finger(skin) on a tip overlay..when I super glued the end of my finger to it. should have one set of limbs spray finished thursday night. the olive ash burl limbs came out 36#s @ 28". weather will be good this weekend. low of 50 and high up to 77 degrees(above zero)
-
steam bent some wood for the 1st time.
Was kinda fun.
Just some little riser pieces..used a microwave and damp towels.
...I didn't come up with the idea but it worked.
-
Dave, when I built my spine tester I had a similar problem. Just wouldn't read accurately. It was extremely precise, just not accurate. So I just printed out a chart by using a linear correction factor that related the reading on my spine tester to AMO spine. Then you can put down the laptop.
-
I built my own spine checker/reducer machine. It's all automatic. I connect it up to the lap top and punch in what I need and walk away. It checks the spine, then turns on the lath and grinds off the precise amount of wood while checking for correct spine every 1/100th of a nano second. I haven't got the software figured out yet to do a taper cause I keep ending up with a 14" arrow and the end that's still locked in the lath just keeps flipping around till it goes flying out and sticks in the ceiling. But someday I'll get er done.. :)
-
you just can't help but make somethin that shoots an arrow can ya..
-
Snow day today, office is closed. Need to finish up DU2's yarn organizer and then glue up a bunch of riser blocks. Luckily mine are all simple, none of that crazy curved stuff...
-
Ordered a set of Manchu arrowshafts in leopardwood. They ought to be a sight-Manchu arrows aren't weighed in grains, they're weighed in ounces.

Last night I trimmed up and cleaned up the rawhide job I did on a Grumley replica I built. Love the looks of blotchy rawhide. Especially over osage.

Thanks Roybert. The grip is just a shoot-in grip, taped on! Overlays are pre-civil war Steiner ivory piano keys.

Nice.

x2 what ben said- look how cool that bow of pearly's looks :D
building those damn tri lams all the time
-
Don't make me come up there boy... :)
-
You keep saying that Roy, but when was the last time you went anywhere? If Wayne hears you've travelled more than 10 miles from home some day, he might start to get scared and shape up. Then again, maybe not...
:smileystooges:
-
Never got those risers glued up, but I did spray some stuff with high gloss Krystal out of my new gun. Much better than the last time I tried it, the previous tip was too small. Still didn't lay down quite perfect as I had trouble getting the shop above 60 degrees. But overall I really like that stuff. Time to put it on my own bow so I can see how it handles serious abuse.
-
-
Candyboy, the beer store is 11 miles away.. :)
-
Nice work on that!

I figured they offered free delivery to customers like you.

That would be another inexcusable use of materials. Heartbroken here. Saw a pre civil war Steiner for $35,000 fully restored ....
It is a really nice bow, and I am highly envious of your ivory source though
-
Benny the piano, I'm told, was junk. The keys where a gift, I wasn't the actual scavenger. I question how long they might last, they are very brittle. Easy enough to replace in any event.
-
Can't remember how many old pianos I've cut up and burnt in the wood burner... Never thought about saving the ivory..
-
I'm surprised Roy. Guy born in your day would be thinkin of using em for new teeth :bigsmyl:
-
LMFAO :clapper:
-
I saved some osage from a pile of firewood today... about a dozen short logs. It was tough to pick through because they were all pushed into a big pile with an excavator, frozen together, and buried in snow, but I was able to get some drug out of there. Walked the property too and looked over a bunch of trees, nothing jumped out at me as exceptional but I didnt see them all and might go back when the weather breaks and look again.
-
I was finally able to warm the garage up to 60 and varnish a pedestal I've been working on. Now that it's done I can finally get some bow building going. :archer:
Dave.
-
Saturday was the rescheduled first shoot of the season at the club. Only one other trad guy showed up to beat a path through the snow with me, but we had a great time. Sun was out, snow was still light and powdery, and I was shooting well. Later in the day it warmed up and started to melt. I'm sure the course would have been a slippery mess.
I got some good shop time in. Among other things I got some risers finally started. Nothing that special, but together with that big stack of lams from Troy it means there will hopefully be bows soon.
More importantly, DU3 joined me in the shop for a significant amount of time. She wanted to make a jewelry box out of a log. By bedtime last night, she was carving her name in the lid and putting the finishing touches on her sanding job.

Good times!

good looking kids mate- even better that they spend some time with you in the shop.

Well Wayne, I've got a 16, 14, and 11. Taken from a perspective outside my household, they are beautiful, smart, responsible, well-adjusted young ladies. But at home, there seems to be just too much estrogen in one house for any of the above to apply to more than one of the four females at a time!
Last night DU1 and DU2 chose to skip dinner and go to bed early after the unreasonable demands of their parents. (Emailing a coach and rinsing the dogs' feet off before bringing in the house.) I've noticed my wife is drinking wine almost every day now that we're into teenage years. And I've also noticed that the recycling bin also seems to have more empty bourbon bottles than before; we won't name names on that one.
I've decided that instead of threatening boyfriends, I plan to offer each of them a beer. They'll need it to deal with my daughters.
Personally, I hope my liver lasts long enough to see them off happily married and trying to raise my teenage granddaughters!
-
I remember them years.. :)
-
I've had great success threatening boyfriends. Don't underestimate it.
-
I plan to maim the 1st one...figure the word will spread and be easier goin from then on...
-
I can't remember where I heard the story, forgive me if it was here on the bench:
Big burly dad walks out like a lumberjack and puts an axe through the hood of the boyfriend's car. Cost him a new hood to stay out of jail, but word got around crazy fast and he never had any more problems.

Yunno..that's a better idea...no medical bills.

that's a true story Dave, a good friend of mine called Kevin , is the badassed guy. hes easily 6'6" and just huge and broad( hes a faller- by trade), and he put the double bitted axe through the hood of the young suitors car- the kid left in a hurry - word spread like wildfire at school- and it only cost him a "new" hood from the wreckers for the kids beater-
whenever I think about the story, I 'bout pee my pants
-
that is rich...lol
-
think I might just erect a shrine to Kevin, at my house- a nice picture on the wall, of him holding the axe!!!
man ... how do we all live through this   I live on an island- I thought that was smart- that I could keep a handle on things- now I think it was the dumbest idea- 'cos now I think not one of the little blighters is good enough for my daughter, the little pimple infested, testosterone soaked little bantam roosters!!
now I think she needs more choice's, better options- there has gotta be a guy out there, good enough in my books to even look at her-
hmmm...maybe someone kinda more like me :D :D :D   yea right!!! that's how we all got ourselves in this mess in the first place!
-
Well..there's hope bud.
Most/ a lot of girls seem to be happy when they choose someone with similarities to their Dad.
I just hope mine find someone a helluva lot better than I was..or am.

Well Wayne, the problem is that we were just like them back then. That's why we worry. Of course, I was more prepared to deal with crazy fathers than the crazy women they were worried about. Hence I'm just as wiling to buy them a drink as threaten their lives. Although if they accept at this age it'll be both!

My two girls are married and raising their own kids. Each has a daughter. I got each of the son in laws a black t-shirt with the following emblazoned across the front
"Guns don't kill people. Dads with pretty daughters do!"
Each of them has it neatly folded in a drawer waiting for the daughters first date to come to the door. :biglaugh: Hope I live long enough to see it.
I had to manhandle one young man who was pursueing one of the girls. It resulted in me having an interview with a cop (lady cop) who told me "well, I understand, but try not to do it again".
Made me my wife's hero for at least a week. :D
-
Between the second wife and I, we have 2 kids each to the previous X spouse. We have 12 grandkids and 1 great grand son from that mix.
I just laugh and send them home now ah days... One of the best days was we had two grandsons fishing at our pond. Well being Me, I sent the one home with about 6 night crawlers in his pocket. He loved it, so did I, but my daughter called me an hour later a little IRATE.. LMAO...
I said this is called pay back... She hung up on me.. LOL
-
Forgive my ignorance Roy, but what the heck is a night crawler- sounds like something out of a zombie movie!!!
Ain't no night crawlers where I come from
-
They're earthworms. At night, especially after a rain, they will come up to the surface and worm around. Hence the name nightcrawlers.
-
When I was with my first wife, when prospective suitors came in they saw the extensive amount of computer systems I used for work. I would hand each one a satellite pic of their house with their parents' names an phone number, etc. I then told them if I could find all that out from a name, imagine what I could do if I got angry.
She got mad when her suitors stopped calling. I never hurt anyone, never damaged anything. I never threatened with a weapon. I simply reminded them I could essentially remove them from the world's systems. I thought it was a riot.
-
Well I think I just pulled the trigger on a bandsaw... The cutting capacity is 30x16!!! Yep one of those dimensions are in inches and the other in FEET!!! Now , where to put the dang thing. I will post some pics when I pick it up this weekend.

a horizontal band mill???
you guys got cactus 16 feet long?? :D

where did you get that, and what didja pay- it exactly what i have been looking for- been considering building one- i dont need a big band mill- just a small one!
-
Found her on craigslist for a good to me price 1k. I think getting a trailer big enough to make her mobile will cost me more, but I think it will give me a few more options for bow wood.
-
Holy smokes! That's awesome and makes my Alaska Mills look pretty lame. And $1k is phenomenal as well. I've got some serious jealousy going on right now.
-
X2 !!!!!!
-
You're jealous! The only way to have a bigger saw than that is to buy a saw mill...... Oh yeah! there's one for sale on the other side of town.

What's a Qing style quiver look like?
-
Nevermind, Google came through. Cool.
-
This isn't recovery, to the contrary I'm worse. But I can get myself feeling as good as possible even though there's no cure or treatment.
Yeah, they're neat aren't they? My 'glass Qing bow should make it in soon. Then I have to build a bow case and archer's belt.
-
Ralph, that is freakin AWESOME! I left eye has started to twitch.....
-
Pictures Ed pictures! :readit:
I hope your new regimen works for you.
Dave.

DU3 came down to the shop because she wanted to help me spread epoxy today. So we had a whole lesson on what epoxy is and how it works compared to regular glue. 4 hours later, she came back down and we took the 5 risers out of the oven. Then we cleaned the glue off of one, squared it up and cut it out on the bandsaw so she could see how it would look. Pretty cool.
Best part of the day is my wife wanting to buy me some new tools from Grizzly for the shop. She's a CPA, so tax season means she's flush with cash and feeling guilty about leaving me in charge of the home front on my own. I think I might be the only guy around who loves tax season!
Also got some other projects moved forward in the shop. Plan is to go hunting tomorrow morning for the first time since January. Can you believe it's still deer season here? Doesn't make 'em any easier to get. They're all nocturnal and smarter than me.
-
Well I drove 5 hours to go pay for and pick up my new saw, there was too many problems no blade guards, tensioner broken, track bent, guides and log dogs missing along with a list of other problems. I was fairly disappointed to have to turn down the offer and turn around and drive home empty handed.
-
Don't blame you. I don't know the saw you wish for very well, but I understand the parts missing or damaged are vital to its operation.
If you acquired such a saw, would you be able to supply green wood for composite cores?
-
Green as in fresh cut and milled?
-
Yup. Green wood bends and hide glues better. I love working green wood anyway. It cuts so beautifully.
-
Got together with a "harl" who I met on this site.
Harl, a friend of his, and myself went out to an indoor range that is just up the road from me... I had no idea it was even their. I thought I was the only one around these parts that even shoots trad.
Had a great time, meeting, and shooting with my new friends, learned a thing or two as well.
-

Here's the quiver build. Green wood would benefit me here-I could bend the frames rather than laminating them.
-
Dang Ralph to bad because I have a trailer that would have worked for you and cheap too. Keep that in mind if you find a better one.
-
Not going to get too excited but I found another sawmill up in farmington for about the same price. Good thing I am headed up there tonight like I do every week for school. Will let you all know if this one is in better shape and if I get it.
-
Good luck rmorris! I just cut 10 olive ash burl veneers, same as the ones in this ILF limb I built earlier this month..Now I'm taking a little break to cut up a wild hog ham for the crock pot and am gonna hammer some flat to fry later tonite.. (http://i596.photobucket.com/albums/tt46/Robertfishes/plive%20ash%20burl_zpslyfzaep8.jpg) (http://s596.photobucket.com/user/Robertfishes/media/plive%20ash%20burl_zpslyfzaep8.jpg.html)
-
beautiful
-
oh man, I gotta full belly..fried wild hog, mashed potatos and gravy, sweet corn for supper tonite...and I have the rest of the ham in my crock pot slow cooking for supper tomorrow night. I got a stack of veneers cut too, 20 Olive Ash Burl, 8 or 10 Rosewood veneers, 6 curly koa, 4 quilted sapele..that should keep me busy for a while.
-
Wow that burl veneers look great!
-
Sounds good! I bent the last veneer in a complex curve with a heavy cut of hide glue and now I have to wait till morning to remove all the yards of string keeping it curved right. I pre-sized it with a couple of coats like a composite bow.
The more I use hide glue the more I love it. The bottle of TBIII will be my last, I feel. Gonna cook up some moose sinew glue too. Hard to have enough on hand, says the man with a pound and a half of hide glue. Fish bladder glue is my next stop.
-
where you get all the fish bladders from?
-
From fish...
-
The big auction site, when I order them. There's also premade there, but I just want to do it myself.
-
listen here smarty pants.... :biglaugh:
wonder if those bladders could be dried and shipped through the post?
we catch a lot of fish here during the summer- i could collect them for you Ed!
-
finally got some horn glued to the tips of a bow.
..taking a looong time to finish this one.
15-20mins here and there kinda stinks.
-
Yes they can, and I'd pay you for the privilege and split the glue. This stuff starts at over $150/kg on the big auction site for just bladders, and the premade glue is probably adulterated with hide/sinew glue.
Fish skins are good for backing, too. Just remember when pulling bladders to get all the fat off. It ruins the glue.
-
so the bladders we have here are mostly salmon, never noticed much fat on the float bladder before- but i will look for it now, should i leave the air in, while i dry them, and then deflate afterwards, or is the membrane thin enough- that i can just dry them flat.
-
Just dry em flat.
Got my sirdan points in today, only to find they have a narrow shoulder. Makes me wonder about arrow longevity with them. I need to get someone to make me real points, but that takes money I spent on a new bow.

She is all mine! More capacity , 40' of track, and I was able to call the manufacturer and get a quote on replacing all the worn out parts.
-
Nice score!!
-
very cool, now we all gotta buy one! :D
-
sweet man!
-
I learnt something t-nite.....
maple makes for a darn stiff core...
...may have to narrow the profile a touch...sheesh
:dunno:
-
Nice Ralph. I'm jealous.
-
I just finished gluing up my bow. It went really well, I only dropped 2 glued lams on the floor. :knothead:
depending on how it turns out, it may or may not become my swap bow.
Dave.
-
Got my band saw all taken apart! Need a few parts to get her fully functional but did two oil changes on her today and replaced all the fule and oil accessories. She starts up and runs like a champ.
-
Went scouting for turkey today with my daughter. We didn't see any turkey signs but still had a great day.
-
ya gotta stop talking about yer mill, its driving me insane with envy :D
-
I pulled my bow out of the clamps this morning and discovered that one belly lam split open along the fade ramp. I don't think it's critical, but it's not too pretty.
I'll find a way to fix it though. In the meantime, I have another bow to prepare and glue up today- after I fix a leaky pipe in the basement.
Dave.
-
lol you and me both..
I'm replacing a shower drain today.
I swear...who ever decided to put the drain directly over a basement wall is having a chuckle today..
-
One thing I have found to be useful when shopping for a house. If the seller tells you that he/she is a handy person, run!
Dave.
-
lol
-
well....to be honest the guy thought he was a real do it yourselfer...
..his example of why was changing his own oil....he was quite serious.. :readit:
-
Leak's fixed, now it's playtime! :archer:
One bow to cut to profile, and some bamboo to plane and toast for my next bow. Maybe I'll get the second one glued up tonight.
Dave.
-
well ya beat me....still waiting for the glue to dry...lol
-
Well, so much for playtime. I had the bow shaped and the edges radiused and I was stringing it up when a belly lam blew off.
Does padauk need to be wiped down with acetone before gluing? I've never had a problem with it before.
Dave.

Was that a brown trout in the first set of photos?

I need some fly fishing soon. It's been awhile. Thanks for sharing!
This afternoon DU2 and I got her new bow in the oven. Her second set of hands definitely made the glue-up thing easier. Unfortunately we won't get a chance to pull it out and look at it until tomorrow evening.
Here she is tightening up the form before inflation:

Real nice fly rod.Trying to build a boo rod is one of my next things to learn ,if I ever get halfway decent at building bows.
David...that is a heck of a form, did you build it? Enjoy that daughter, they grow up fast.

x2!
As for the form yes, I built it. I quickly realized that a form that stays straight and true and is easy to work with was worth the investment. I have longer tie straps so that I can put in wood inserts with more curvature if I want to make a recurve or something. The wood inserts are easy to make when the metal is taking all the load and swap in and out quickly.
-
(http://i.imgur.com/Wl8E2JV.jpg)
Bow out of the form. Looks like my swap bow will be colored glass. DU2 stole my last clear glass.
-
More good memories David! Man, That form is super impressive!!!!
-
Really neat looking form, more details please.
-
My first air hose form was made out of laminated plywood, but had a couple of problems. The biggest was that the bolt holes for the tie straps would deform under load (1.5" x 72" x 80 psi = 8600 lbs). Which made it tough to keep the form nicely aligned. Second, it took a lot of wood to make the form and then that form took up a lot of space. So messing with multiple forms became problematic.
Being an engineer with ADD who sits in a lot of boring meetings gave me time to overthink this. What I came up with was a single form frame out of metal that could have various wood inserts swapped in and out.
All of the load is assumed to be carried through the metal components, the wood is just there for shape. Since the air in my hose expands in the oven and my pressure often goes over 90 psi while cooking, I ran the calcs for minimal deflection at 10,000 lbs of load. I decided to go with 1530 extrusions from 80/20. (1.5" x 3.0") 80/20 extrusions are anodized aluminum and very straight. Steel tube would have worked as well and been a bit cheaper. However, 80/20 also lets you add moveable feet to stand it up and clips for attaching the wood inserts.
The tie-straps are also aluminum (6061-T6) and sized to carry the load. (Note they actually carry 20,000 lbs combined.) I think the cross sections are 3/4 x 1/2. They bow out from the form in order to allow room for the air hose or wood inserts wider than 1.5". These straps are through bolted to the extrusions at four fixed locations with 5/16" grade 8 bolts. These through holes were drilled carefully and precisely to make sure everything stays square and true. If not all drilled the same, you could end up with some of the straps not carrying their share of the load. If not drilled true and square, the top of your form will cock over slightly relative to the bottom.
The straps in the picture are sized for 6" wood inserts which works well for longbow forms. I also made a set of tie straps that allow for 12" wood inserts when I want to make bows with more curvature in the limbs.
I've found the form bolts together very quickly and easily. It weighs about 60# with a bow in it going into the oven, which isn't that much heavier than my all plywood form. My glue-ups have all come out of it nice and straight and trouble free. I think it was definitely worth the investment in materials and construction.
If y'all have more specific questions I can try to answer them. I can probably also take some more pictures if you have certain areas you want to see in more detail.
-
well done!

Pretty cool David..
Took the puppy for a walk down to the pond today. She is a real lab now, she went in the water... 4 months old and is 35 #'s and strong as hell...

Can't wait 'til they come in and get some arrows fletched up!

Spent a good while talking to the maker of my next bow. It's great being able to talk with someone and explain your needs, and them pay attention.
-
This weekend my dad visited for the first time in 2.5 yrs. He made blow guns and darts with his granddaughters and spent time shooting with DU2 - even following her around the local range yesterday. He seemed to enjoy reading Traditional Bowhunter Magazine in the evenings with his whiskey and talking about when he was a kid and my grandfather was big into archery. Yesterday morning he helped me glue up a reverse handle bow that I didn't have a solid purpose for yet. He seemed to enjoy shooting my longbow, and kept asking questions about the design. I had been thinking about making him a bow someday, but was planning a d/r design with some nice veneers - something a cabinet maker would appreciate. But I wasn't sure he'd ever shoot it much. Now I'm thinking something different. The bow he helped glue up would probably be perfect for him. I'm going out to see him at the end of April, I'd like to send it out ahead of me. Need to have a set of arrows to go with it as well. He also wants me to get one of the big toms that hang out on his property. (He was reading turkey articles in TBM.) I think they'll be in season when I get there. Makes for a good reason to be shipping a bow and some arrows without raising suspicions.
:saywhat:

Finish sanded 2 sets of ILF limbs..spraying finishing later today. I Deboned a wild hog ham, cut some up and flattened with hammer for frying in coconut oil.. the rest I kept whole and put in crock pot for BBQ.. We made mashed potatoes, sweet corn and I made some red and black pepper gravy..it was gooooood..looks like crock pot bbq wraps for the next couple of days..

not retired, I put in 40 hrs at my day job..and 0 to 30 hours in my bow shop..

9600 lol I've still got 40,000 hrs to work and that's if I only work 1,600 hours a year!!!

Forcibly retired, but retired.

My son is putting the finishing touches on his first bow build! Three piece take-down...no matter how hard I tried I could not talk him out of building a 75# beast of a bow. The bow is 62" ntn and fast.

Not counting weekends, I'm planning on 3600. But aiming for 2500 if I can swing it early.

I only have 15,750 more hours to go. Looked at another way, that's just under a million minutes. Or 57,000,000 seconds. tic toc.....
Good news is I will have 662,256,000 seconds of expected life span afterwards :)

I have a feeling my retirement home will look something like this........ :dunno:

Well, I pretty much retired three years ago. Not so much by choice but rather as a result of hitting a tree on a snowmobile :scared:
I still take on some short term jobs every now and then. Just finished one last Saturday.
I could not afford this bow building problem without the bit of extra pocket money. If this bow building and archery affliction could pay for itself, that would be ideal.

Paul, sorry about the cut, but that is funny.
Been working on the oak pyramid. It's tillered and pretty much shot in. Put some finish on but now I'm going to back up and reshape the grip. Looks like it will end up in the hands of a 12 year old grandson.

Got my Mongolian bow in. Broke my thumb ring and punched myself in the kisser at @ 95#. Dislocated my jaw, but it's easy for me to reduce, so all it means is a sore jaw.

Geeze, cut finger, messed up jaw.. I'm staying out of the shop tonight..... Don't wanna fall and not be able to reach my beer.. :)

I was going to plane some bamboo, but I'm not sure if I should run any power equipment today.
I tried to file my tax return and the system wouldn't let me. Then I went to glue up some taxidermy panels and the biscuit joiner messed up so the holes don't line up. I think I should keep my fingers away from the big machine today. :readit:
One thing I did seemed to turn out ok though. I tested some home made wood stain on some samples to see what I'd get. This stuff is simple, made from vinegar and steel wool. Well, pine goes brown to red-brown, white oak goes nearly black, red oak goes a kind of ugly gray-red-black, natural bamboo and maple darken some, cherry darkens a lot and walnut looks like blackwood with the end grain going coal black, and black limba goes dark and looks real nice.
I have to give it more time for the reaction to finish, but I think this stain might find it's way onto some bows soon.
Dave.
-
Loading up the Yucon for a trip out east to PA for a weeks vacation.... Oh and to pick up a boat :bigsmyl:
-
Dave I believe what you're talking about (iron acetate solution) is one of the classic ways to ebonite wood!
I've been reading into doing exactly that lately. I was thinking of turning some oak shafts jet black.
They say it works because the iron acetate reacts with wood tannins to cause the black color. Woods that are high in tannins like oak and walnut get really black. They also say you can wipe really strong tea ... Yeah like earl grey ... Onto the wood before or even after the iron acetate to make low tannin woods get really black too.
-
John, my first thought was that beer would get warm, but then, probably not for Roy
-
lol

Had a big chunk of osage on two saw horses that I was cutting with a hand saw as my band saw objected to it.Probably weighted about 20 -30lb and of course one end dropped off onto my bare toe. Compound fracture and a stern warning from my doctor to keep out of my work shop for a while. Was going away to a trad shoot couple hours from here now I'm keeping the cat company here at home. Luck sure mores in strange ways.
-
Ouch Bobby. Hope ya heal up quickly.
-
I did a bunch of hinge cutting on a buddies hunting property yesterday. Not sure there is anything better a person can do to invite critters in.
Started sealing Sixby's bow as well. He and I are swapping work and Im excited!
-
Very cool Pearl...I'd be excited too.
Bob..OUCH! Sorry..jeesh..Hope you get healed up fast.
-
thanks Roy and Zradix, healing ok. just grumpy can't get into workshop.
-
Been sinewing a splice on my Manchu bow I made out of a Mongolian-should end up in the neighborhood of 100#@36". Still have to smooth the sinew, wrap with cherry bark and make some nocks. I don't have any horn to hand so I'll probably splice in some kind of hardwood. Still need some birch bark to finish it up.
-
Yesterday was the customer appreciation 3D shoot and feed at Wildhorse Creek Bows. Mike Dunnaway and his wife Susan put this on every year for folks who have bought bows from him. Good food and a great time had by all.
Sorry to hear about your toe bigbob2.Hope it heals up OK.
-
The heck with what the doc said! Hop on over to the shop and build more of those gorgeous bows of yours Bob!
Seriously though, I hope you heal up quickly.
Dave.

It's been a good day today. Watched Mr. turkey go into the sauna, dug some Jerusalem artichokes out of the garden to go with Mr. turkey tonight, then I glued up a longbow and started tillering one that I replaced the messed up belly lams on last night. It looks like it may be a shooter, but it's too heavy to become my swap bow.
Now all that's left is to get cleaned up and wait for family that's coming over for dinner.
Happy Easter All!
Dave.

That's good though Kenny, congrats on the new contract!

Congrats Kenny. Sorry about your dog, Randy.

Update on the oak board pyramid;
Long story short; she broke! :(
But, no bow is without it's lessons and for this one I'll say that my attempt to glue the riser block down to the limb was a failure.
You may recall that I discovered that the riser block was not adequately glued to the limb. Photos are earlier in this thread. I attempted to patch it with super glue and an overlay of automotive fiberglass and epoxy. here is what it looked like after that repair.
No problems during tillering nor in shooting in at a short draw. Several days ago I let about ten arrows go at full draw with no problems. Today I put it on the scale and it drew 36# at 28".
Decided to run it over the chrono with a 525 grain arrow. The first shot went across at 139.6 fps. On the second shot it broke! :scared:
So, here it is after the break. It might be repairable, but I'm not going to risk it since the bow was going to go to a grandson. Time to start hunting for a new board.
Here is how it broke.

Sorry to hear that. It's even tougher for kids.

Bummer Mike.
I have in my possession a very nice oak board stave that's extremely dense, very wide ringed. Doesn't make much sense to spend money to ship a $6 board though ....
-
Monterey,
Sorry about the bow. But the lessons learned should be not to narrow the handle like that. Also don't cut in a shelf like that. You have to make sure you have enough wood left to keep the handle rigid. You don't and that's why it popped the glue on riser and cracked where it did. The grain looks kinda questionable in that area too but it might be a photo issue. Better luck on the next one.
-
Ben, thanks for the thought. I'll make the rounds tomorrow. Have four of the big box home improvement stores nearby so chances are good.
John, grain was pretty good. That bad glue joint between the walnut and the oak seemed to initiate the break. Grandson will be disappointed
-
Ouch, sorry Mike..

worked on a recurve today, got tips glued on, filed and rough shaped..and shaped grip and shelf. It looks like I will make the 52# draw weight roo..birdseye maple riser with olive ash burl veneer.. Robert and Trux, I always enjoy seeing your projects!

Worked a bit on a pair of matching all bocote w/clear glass TD longbows. Will end up about 53@28 and 64"
will take a couple pics when all finished up.
The plan is for bro and I to bloody them up for a couple years, then give em to my 2 boys.....

uggh...trying to spray finish a bow, been really humid and light rain this afternoon..I have had the dehumidifier on in the 8 x 10 room since 3:45pm. Im gonna go for it since its gonna rain all week..we will see how good my $15 yard sale dehumidifier is, it was likely $300 new..gotta love those yard sale bargins.
-
The bow came out perfect, the Krystal dull dried nicely. I used the new Gordons glass and it also looks streak free..
-
While I have been waiting to hear that the clear glass issues are improving I decided to venture into the black glass world for a bit. I still have some sanding and then it is time to spray on a finish.

I put a few arrows through a new longbow I built for a good friend in Ohio.

It's a sweet shooter and silent as a ghost.
64" tip to tip, bamboo back and belly, walnut core and a pretty piece of walnut for the riser. It draws 46# @ 28", but it will likely lose a little weight by the time it's fully shot in.
After shooting the new bow, I strung up a couple of hunting bows for some practice before turkey season.

I dunno, I guess it's ok.
-
this is the bow i finished last night. I strung it up and shot a few arrows thru it. It shot super nice , very quiet and dead in the hand at the shot. I delivered it to my hunting buddy and he shot it a bunch before dark... He is going to put a selway slipon quiver on it. Nice! I love those veneers.
Sorry about the double post. I was having trouble with photo bucket.
Now, if I can get a real tom to hold still like my target..... :knothead:
Dave.
-
Woodcarver - do you glue up your bamboo back and belly bow on similar form to the tri-lam process or a glass bow process? And then I would also assume that your ability to tiller is limited to the kind of tillering done on a glass bow. Is my thinking correct?
-
-
I use a form similar to, but not as OK as the one Roy uses. Tillering is limited to sanding the edges and trapping the back and or belly.
Dave.

Settled up with Uncle Sam this morning. It always hurts but when you stop paying the taxes I guess ....... absent from the body, present with the Lord.

Broke a bow I was working on. Gonna have to use a fishtail splice on both ends to save it, if I can at all. Wouldn't be so bad if I didn't do it while stringing it, and fell on top of the broken bow.
I'll live, I learned and I just have to keep going.
-
Glad your ok halfseminole, keep at it. Really that's all any of us can do. I got caught up on a few archery related things today myself. Finally got around to planting about 113 osage seeds and about 102 persimmon seeds in starter pots, my daughter Jacey and 2 of my son's Creek and Ledge helped with that. Afterwards they all shot bows and bragged on who was the best shot. Oldest son Briar wasn't there to shoot his new Mad Dog Machete bow so they were all better than him today, according to them. Afterwards defeathered about 10 sets of wings that by the smell of them were way past due. Finally cut, tapered ends and stained 24 shafts. Wife's working tonight hope she don't read this cause none of us touched the 2 baskets of laundry on the table, oops. That's a bad thing when there's 6 of you. Will do better tomorrow, maybe.
-
Put the final textured coat on a late 50's Kodiak I've been refinishing. It was a white glass and maple bow (at least I think the riser is maple). I figured out how to stain glass, so that was kinda fun.
-
Well dang, are you going to explain how to stain the glass!
What are you refinishing with? I have several older bows that I'd like to re-do but not sure what to use.
-
It was pretty easy really.
Just sanded it down smooth to the glass.
Then mixed up some black aniline dye with methanol and wiped it on.
The Glass on this one was white. The dye actually worked too well the 1st time and made the limbs black as night. Didn't look so black till I wiped on the poly. So I sanded it back down a touch to achieve the grey color I wanted.
Then wiped on some more poly.
That's really it.
I probably should have left it alone right there.
..but I've always gotta mess with things..for better or worse.
So I mixed up some green dye and used the black I already had to put the "camo" lines on the limbs.
After putting the lines on it I just wiped on a few more coats of poly.
Then did a few coats of rattle can spar from enough distance to give the textured look I prefer.
I'm sure the collectors will frown on this..and how much value was lost from removing all the silk screening, staining, etc.
I have no plans to sell this one..ever.. for my own reasons.
So I figured I may as well make it something different.
I dunno how much I like the way it turned out..but it's kinda camoed up at least.
Not a good photographer and my camera sucks..but here's a peek...

This will be much faster than my home made one.

You folks need to check out the post on powwow section.
A little show n' tell from you great crafty folks is needed!
Eric has a very fine Osage static posted.

Picked up a used drum sander, router, spindle sander and tons of clamps off of CL yesterday. Also got most of the materials for my bow oven piled up and ready for when I have enough free time to build.
-
Hit the gym for strength training for both bows and general physical fitness. Some stuff I did very easily and some was very, very hard due to deformities and the chair. Still feels rewarding.
I even made it ten whole minutes on the treadmill.

That's great, Ed. Keep up the good work.

glued up a ILF short limb.. I used Ash burl that I lightly dyed for back veneer and Chestnut burl for belly veneer. Amberboo tapers. This is the First short limb on this form..hoping for 42# at 28" on Helens 25" Olympic style riser.

Got board. Made a new riser for a straight limb. Had some zebra laying around.

cool looking bows

Joe - I really like those. Rarely do you see a glass r/d with a straight grip. I like straight grips the best and those are really unique looking.

today I walked and scouted the hunt club I joined between Gainesville and Cedar Key Florida. It is really thick and mostly pines.palmettos and gall berry with plenty of cypress heads, It can get pretty wet and floods at times. I found this area of oaks between some large wetlands, I took the picture from a 16 ft ladder stand. I should have a few deer and hogs feeding here when the acorns start dropping. I got home around 5 and glued all the overlays onto a set of ILF limbs I am building for Helen. I spent the day putting new plumping in my house. PEX is really slick and much faster than soldering copper.
I did get to fling a few arrows after I cleaned everything up, but the bow just felt kind of heavy tonight.

Down to Durango area to hunt turkeys with the grandson. He killed a big beauty last night. Blew my only opportunity so far. Took a break to fish for pike and the kid got a nice one I'm skunked. Should I leave him home next time?

You hunt and fish like a girl... LOL

Walked a few steps today. They're looking at discharging me to rehab.

Good news Ed, keep up the good work.

10 hours at work, half hour each way to get there and back.
Put wipers on my car to prepare for rain the last 5 days of turkey season. LOL

Nice Roy. You could probably get a two or three bow grips out of that if you're careful...
I don't usually benefit when my wife starts cleaning out.

Made it to walking with a walker today. Gtetting ready to turf me out. TPA is a wonder drug.

That's awesome Ed!

Roy you should make some Tarzan shorty shorts with that tanned deer hide..
Halfseminole sounds like you are making good progress. I used a Walker for a few months after breaking my back 22 years ago.
-
Haha that's funny Dave. I was wondering what you were doing in a reasonably sized pickup truck.
Kept looking at the pic saying .... That's not a suburban !?
Sawed up some Osage today into lams. Need to grind me still .... 1/4hp bandsaw is a sick joke. Takes 6min to saw one lam 1.5" wide and 36" long from Osage .... I'm dreading cutting any Ipe.

Glad you're back home Ed, continue to heal brother!

Keep at it Ed! Looking forward to a pic of you drawing back to about three feet!
-
Nice mosaic Cody!!
-
Tried to draw a bow for the first time since the stroke. Got about 35-40 pound and arm collapsed.
Draw length should remain the same, just weight went down. Makes the manchubows.com bow perfect for me now.
-
Keep at it Ed! You've got more heart than many people I've met. You'll get there yet.
Dave.

Still have some work to do with that kid. He always outfishes me! Has something to do with being willing to stand in the rain.
We had a great time down there, despites some major rain. Good camp, good food and good company. Lots of turkeys too.

How do you guys so mosaic stips? I glued up a 16" long set of blocks and sliced off some strips. They broke apart when I flexed them just a tiny bit. How do you make it work with the smaller pieces

Fletched a sirdan arrow to play with when I get a bit stronger. Also, got a good chapter on the new novel, maybe have one or two more in me.
-
When I do my curved mosaic i use a heat gun and warm the wood up then mist with a bit of water as I very slowly clamp my curved sections in. Pm me if you want beachbow and we can chat

Got my new beaver balls and judo tips today! Stumping here I come!
-
Just ground 4 sets of bocote lams for St. Judes.

I woke up today feeling like death. I think maybe I got a little sun sick this weekend with this whole crop-fit exercise thing my wife has me working on. You know, rototilling, weedeating, planting, mowing, fixing, etc. Anyhow, I felt better early afternoon so I went to my shop where things are shady. My trip to Grizzly a couple weeks ago was still sitting there waiting for assembly. So, I cleaned up my shop and got to work.
The dust collector wouldn't fit where the old one did, but man, does it pull some CFMs compared to the old one! I think I still want to re-think my setup with perhaps a rigid duct system (or at least partial.)
The sander comes with a stupid little base, but I needed it to roll and I figured a place to store sandpaper wouldn't hurt. So I made a base with locking casters for it. Turned it on, ran a board through a couple times with my daughter and the paper came loose on the drum. I know Grizzly says to tape the one end down (and that's how it came from the factory,) but that seems stupid. Growing up in the cabinet shop we use large hose clamps for the end opposite the spring tensioner. I'm also not sure about their whole felt on the second roller idea. I think I'm just going to pull that off while I'm at it and adjust the drum heights to suit.
But, don't get me wrong. It's frickin' awesome. I can't wait to build my first bow with home grown, home harvested, and home ground lams!
And just to make sure the day was complete, I finally pulled the last bow out of the form that I had glued up at the beginning of April. Still had 20psi on the hose. Man, life gets away from you sometimes...

looking awesome David.
what wood do you grow and harvest?

Looks great. :) Bue--.

Well, I should say locally grown and home harvested. Nature grows it either on my property or nearby, and so far I've been able to locally harvest cherry, walnut, and black locust for lams that have made some good shooting bows. There are also a few ERCs I have my eye on. Plenty of hickory as well, but haven't used for lams. Plus oak and spalted maple for furniture projects.
-
wow- you guys are pretty lucky
very neat!
-
That rocks Dave. I bet you were grinning like a kid running the board through that!
-
Nice, David.. I have to tape both ends of my sand paper as the roller doesn't have the spring clamp assy. But the tape works well.
-
That seems odd not to have a clamp to hold the paper. I have the other Grizzly drum sander with the open end. It has clamps. They can be a bear to use but at least it has them.
-
Some of the grizzly drum sanders have no clamps, which I don't really care for. Instead, they have Velcro on the drum roller, so you need to purchase paper with Velcro on the back, it's called hook and loop. It actually adheres very well, however with the way the strips need to be cut for install onto the drum, coming to a point, they suggest wrapping the ends of the drum with a strong strapping tape. Trust me here, you must tape it down, cause if you forget too, and turn on the sander, it sounds like an M50 machine gun going off inside. LMAO
Some old coot from Linneus, Mo sent me a sweet 36" x 2" x 2" block of pristine Osage for my birthday. So last night I made it into 5 awesome 5/16" thick lams and have them stickered up for this falls bow making season.. :) Thanks Kenny..

Finally finished a 42# @ 28" set of ILF short limbs for Helen..these are the 2nd set of limbs off of the new form..she didn't like the first set..they were only 65# ..so after some new calculations I somehow nailed the target weight. She has been shooting carbon wood Sebastion Flute 42# limbs..I told her she will need stiffer arrows with my super awesome redneck bowshop limbs. If they are to radical for her Olympic style bow then I have a 15" Aluminum Morrison riser that will make a 48# bow for me.

Walked 400 or so feet with PT today. Waiting for my leg braces so I can move better. Should be here in a few weeks.

Made some progress on the trade bow as well as a few other projects. Got a new form made for a kids recurve (thanks James!) And a couple risers and limb blanks for three other bows.

Last night I had time to play with the new thickness sander. I had ordered some hose clamps earlier in the week to take care of the one end of the sandpaper on the drum. I drilled some small holes in the other end so that I could insert a bolt after twisting the tension disc back, freeing up a hand for installation. I pulled the felt off the second drum and then lowered to make up the difference. I worked back and forth until I had sticks running on both sides of the machine and coming out within 0.001" of each other. Feeling pretty good, I put the lid back to run a couple final scraps through and check out the dust collection on a bigger board.
BAM!
Apparently there is not enough room between the dust collection shroud and rear roller to accommodate a hose clamp. The hose clamp was broken and embedded in the shroud. D'oh!
I walked up to the house in disgust and called it a night. Sometimes it's tough to be a guy who needs to mess with everything. Looks like I'll have to figure out how to make tape work for me after all.
-
Told ya so, Mr Engineer.. LOL
-
Got a new form done to start making kids bows. Waiting on an air hose and then I've got one to glue up!
-
Used smooth-on MT-13 to epoxy a bow sleeve for the first time yesterday.
-
build a new shroud with more clearance? :)
but would that clamp, with the adjuster on one side, not effect the balance of those rollers? :dunno:
-
Wayne,
You could feel a very slight increase in machine vibration with the clamps on due to the imbalance. But the rpms aren't that high and didn't seem to line up with any natural modes so I was ok with it. Didn't seem to make much difference in the results. Things were coming out perfect before I put the shroud back on to test the dust collection.
Looking online in woodworking forums, etc there are a lot of people who are unhappy with the tape solution. One guy did mod his shroud where the clamp came past for clearance. (He did not note whether it was foresight or reactionary.) The best solution was a guy who put double-sided tape down before putting the paper down to keep it from spinning on the drum under load and then used the reinforced strapping tape to wrap the outside as described in the manual. I think I'm going to try the tape, but start the tape on the drum under the paper and then lap the paper over the tape before finishing a final wrap over the top. We'll see.

Oh, and why I checked in: Stopped and taunted Sweka over a beer or two last night. We even threw a few arrows downrange in the fading light. The boy is finally learning to shoot proper like!
-
dave i have a delta drum sander- would have loved a grizzly- but i got the delta for the right price....free!
mine jas a red coloured tack coat on the drum- really holds the paper well- and easy to change grit's, but the delta has a spring clamp on either end. i will find out about the tack coat, from my mate who has it- who i got the sander from.

Thanks Dave. I've been working on getting rid of target panic. If any of you have target panic and want to get rid of it, check out Joel Turner's (clickerman) video. It's the only method that has worked for me and right now is the first I can actually hold at full draw without releasing the arrow in about 8 years.

I had some leather from previous projects and decided to make a new armguard. Been using the same one for years and it is well worn.
Also came across my side quiver patterns and had enough leather to make two, sooo.. Probably put them on fleabay.
-
@ Hose clamp vibration...
If tape doesn't work for ya, use another hose clamp and put the screws for each clamp on opposite sides.
...or if you don't have width to spare, make a double long clamp by putting two clamps together and adjust the fit so the screws are on opposite sides.
-
Packed duffel....packed arrows...packed bow...packed cooler...put passport, vouchers, boarding passes, book, camera and jacket in backpack....about to get up in 7 hours and fly to Saskatoon then drive north about 5 hours and hunt black bears the next 8 days. :)
Taking my Robertson Wolfer...some recently made douglas fir shafts tipped with 3 ribtek 190s and 3 grizzly kodiaks....turkey fletching on all but one that has goose fletching for rainy days...bastard file, knife, extra string for bow.
Think I am all set...hunted with my longbow for past two years but got Wolfer and started shooting and eager to baptize her in blood.

Attached boy! I used to live up in that neck of the woods, your going to have fun!

Guess it was bound to happen sooner or later.

Nuff outta you boy. That bow is older than you..

Now that's funny right there -- Roy working on a glass bow.

What a difference Roy!
Looks like it's yellow glass before.

Looks good Roy.
Did ya save the lettering on the limbs?
I thought about saving it on my old Bear..but decided just to clean it all off.

I sanded them off, doesn't make it shoot any better.. :)

NUTS!

ya know...you could stain those limbs.... :bigsmyl:

John it's unreal how accurate that bow shoots. I'm thinking about orange shellac for an Osage look.. LMAO :)

LMAO...
yunno...they have those woodgrain pattern tools that work with gell stains and such.
not sure if gell stains work well with glass.
aniline dyes and methanol work pretty well though...

Heading out for the Pa longbow shoot at Marsh hill, Pa this morning. See ya all Sunday.

Have fun Roy.

heading off 7 Am for Aussie longbow and recurve muster about 5 hours from my place, should be great few days.Hey Fujimo if you read this still no sign of those sample pieces even getting to Australia yet, getting worried as it's almost 1 month.

Don't be too worried Bob, there have been some cuts at Canada Post. It's a fair distance to row you know!

So, last night DU2 asked if we could get her new bow cut out. Yes, the one we glued up back in March. :dunno:
We ground the boogers off all five bows I had glued up and then she helped me layout each of the bows. It was much faster with a second set of hands.

We didn't have much time before bed last night, so the cutting process will have to happen tonight.

I am getting the props together to shoot a Gizmo video when my son comes for a visit next week.
I floor tillered a bow blank I made of mismatched billets and found one limb was really good, strong wood and the other was like a noodle, mushy and weak. It will do for demonstrating floor tillering and using the gizmo on the long string.
I had my shoulder worked on 4 months ago, recovery hasn't been going well. I am shooting a 38# bow and didn't have anything to move up to that would be a few pounds heavier.
I was digging in my failure bow pile and found a BBO that came out way under poundage and was a real poor performer. I had heat treated the limbs and put it back in the pile.
I strung it up to check it and found he heat treating had really gotten the tiller off. I retillered it and gave it a test run. Dang, it was now a rocket launcher, a #45 rocket launcher, just what I needed for my rehab.
Yep, heat treating works wonders on a wimpy bow.

I used some Turquoise to fill a hole in the back of a osage bow
So I thought I would try some tip nocks
Turquoise was corse so I pounded it with a hammer and got a mixture of corseness.

I made a form, rectangular hole and mixed smooth-on and the powder
I had a rectangular block of wood to push the mixture in the hole to push everything down.
So In the oven in the house 180*.
we will see what happens :) :jumper:

had to work 3 1/2 hours early this morning at my "day" job..got home and after lunch I started planning a bow build. I turned the A/C down in the shop and Picked out a nice board for a black glass build.. I think the board is Black Limba, I cut out and shaped a 19 inch riser..At 6:30 I cut some pork chops out of a wild hog backstrap and cooked then in an oven bag, I used my serrated potato peeler to thin slice 2 sweet potatoes into planks/chips, I fried them crisp in coconut oil...Helen seemed to enjoy the meal I made us. Managed to get two rounds of shooting in today on my new boo backed tri-lam. The mor I shoot it the more I like it. After not much more than just test shooting a bow or two for over a year I can sure tell it. Got muscles telling me they don't like it.

i just plain like the look of those boo backed bows. Nice!
-
Robert, I'm hungry all over again now.
This weekend DU2 helped me in the shop and we got her new longbow all done and a temporary coat of finish on it so we could hit the range Sunday morning. She's able to shoot it fine for a few shots, but it tires her out after a bit; she'll need to work up to it while continuing to use her old bow as well to practice form with. But she wanted a stronger bow and this one is about 32@25 and really zips an arrow. She wanted it full length, so it draws smooth out to 30 inches or so.
Turns out she's an awesome string maker too. I'm now paying her to make my strings. I should have thought of this sooner. She's a natural with knots and rope and taught herself to knit years ago. Her attention to detail is better than mine. And since she can look at something once and figure out how to knit it without a pattern, teaching her what to do took about 30 seconds. After her first string she was already improving on my process.
-
the sign of a good teacher, is when the student surpasses the teacher!
you are a lucky man!
good job-
not on the bow- but on raising a great family.
-
But when the student surpasses the teacher in 30 minutes, it might have more to do with inate ability and a low bar. :dunno:
Thanks Wayne. They're starting to look like they might just make it after all.
-
She may have the inate ability, but it sure looks like you have the dad thing down. :notworthy:
-
That's awesome Dave!!!
And a reverse handle too....Sweet!

Very nice. I can't wait to my son's older.
My 4 year old just told me "he wants a bow like daddy's "

arrived home from Rock Ridge Outfitters in Carrot River, SASK from bear hunt. Got a nice black bear..perfect coat....206+ lbs with no fat on it so would likely go over 300# for Fall before hibernation.... Quick caliper score of skull without final cleaning and drying was 19". So thinking should be slightly over 18" after all is said and done...
Shot it with my new wolfer bow from Dick R....and a surewood shafted arrow with a Grizzly Kodiak on the front. Blood trail that Ray Charles could follow... :)
Just finished deboning two shoulders and two hams and cleaning them and the backstraps up and put in freezzer vacuum bags. I think one will be a spicy bear stew but sure one or two will make it into my smoker! :)

Nice Bear- way to go!

Congrats Brock, awesome bear.
Very nice bow, Troy.
Very cool, David.
-
That's an awesome bear Ron. Congrats on a successful hunt!
Well, last night I sanded the remaining 4 bows to profile, put some string nocks in and threw 'em up on the tree. Somehow there was a math error when I did the lam stacks for three of them. (I did all three at the same time, and I can't swear that it wasn't after a tasty beverage or two.) The two twin bows that should have ended up in the upper 50's @28 will probably finish in the low 70's. The one that was supposed to be about 70 looks like it may finish up in the upper 80s. Ooops! Since the 70# bow was for me, I can just take one of the twins for myself. The other will probably sit on the shelf until I find some other fool who wants a Hill bow that heavy. The other bow will be my elephant bow I guess in case I ever go to Africa...
The good news is the fourth bow is just fine and should drop into perfect weight for my swap recipient. Hopefully trap and round the limbs and finish final tillering tonight.
-
Way to go Mr. Engineer.. :)
-
Uh oh! Time to hand in your engineer card. I think you've been a manager too long ... Time to get back in the trenches.
Back in my day we used slide rules so now one ever forgot how to calculate ...............
On the plus side, you've got more data, and a reason to build a few more :-)
-
Uh oh! Time to hand in your engineer card.
ROFLMAO....
Ben, I'm thinking he bought his engineers card off the big auction site... Maybe his daughter should lay out the next bow.. :)
-
I thought you guys would appreciate. Funny thing is that my Virginia Dept of Professional and Occupational Regulation license renewal is sitting right here in front of me on my desk.
It turns out it wasn't just a simple math/beer error. Rather it was over-thinking things, making it too complicated and ignoring my initial stack calculations (which would have only been over by a couple of pounds and could have been sanded away.) That'll learn me. Like Ben said, I have more data now that covers the full range.
I'm slowly learning to simplify. Maybe someday when I reach his age I'll be as simple as ole Roybert...
-
Yer right about slowly learning.. LOL
-
No reason to rush these things.

Well today while attempting to repair an old pair of glasses, I super glued my thumb and fore finger together... Took about 10 minutes of soaking in finger nail polish remover to break them apart.. LMAO...

Lmao and then some. Thanks for sharing that you're human too.

That's OK I guess Roy..... LOL
Went to a 3D with Bro John and got within 7 points of him. He was getting nervous. Not really, we don't worry much about score on anything. Had a great time, didn't have to wait on anyone with chairquivers, umbrellas, binocs,or rangefinders! :bigsmyl:

Probably been a long time since you scored, Kenny. LOL

Worked on a new tri-lam today. I was maybe fifteen minutes away from be satisfied with the tiller when I hear s small pop. Took me afew minutes to find what made the noise. Riser had cracked on the upper limb in the fade.
Took it to the bandsaw and cut off. Looks like I'll have my work cut out tomorrow grinding the rest off and fitting on a new handle.

I went and checked on my food plots that I finally got planted last Sunday.

Last night I spent the evening shaping the riser on another long bow. I think that shaping the risers is my favorite part. I'll have to try one of them fancy recurve take down risers some day, they look like a lot of fun.
I've now got four of them that just need final sanding and it'll be time to spray. One is a re-finish of my own bow. One is DU2's new bow. One is the swap bow. And one is for some guy way up north. The fifth bow is my elephant bow that's roughed out to about 99# at the moment. Not sure when I'll get around to finishing that oops up.

Walked through Bass Pro Shop's new store in the Memphis pyramid today. Can't believe the prices on their archery equipment and tackle!
Just finished watching fireworks in the Auto Zone Park from our hotel window... (Wife wouldn't let me go to the game. Had to do Beale St, instead!)
Been a long day. :o
-
This was the first day in some time I got to work on something for myself. With the rain we're having, it's too humid to put the last bit of finish on my swap bow, so I worked on a little something to send along with it when it does finally go.
Then I worked on a bow that I started a few months ago but set aside because it was way too heavy. I guess the quiet rainy weather put me in the right frame of mind and I carefully scraped and checked and exercised the bow until it came down to something in the 50 + pound range with a nice even tiller. I borrowed a string from another bow and shot some test arrows through it. Boy does it shoot! I was so happy with it that I spent the rest of the day shaping the riser and adding tip overlays.
Tomorrow I'll make a string for it and post some pictures.
Dave.

Waitin' for it!

I used a bamboo back and belly with padauk for the core and black limba for the riser. The tips are padauk and limba with walnut tip wedges. It's 70" tip to tip and 69" NTN and draws 50# at 28". When I glued up this bow I went too heavy on the core and it was a beast, so I set it aside for a few months until I had time to play with it. It really smokes an arrow!
Unfortunately, it popped a long splinter in the backing this afternoon. I don't think it's fatal though and I really like this bow, so I'll sand off the back and glue on a new lam
Dave.
-
That is a seriously nice bow! Hope the splinter issue works out.
-
Thanks Bob. If I'm careful with sanding, it should work out.
Dave.

Just got some packages in the mail. Ordered up some new tires, drive belt, and carter bearing system for my band saw in hopes that my cuts will be smoother.
Also received some awesome material for a new R/D 64 inch bow off of my Kenny M form. Materials area cocobolo and Madagascar ebony riser with maple accent stripes. Cocobolo veneers under clear glass. Can't wait to get this bow started.
Also have been trying to get a new shorty recurve finally glued up but have had some hick ups along the way. The top of my form broke under the pressure of the air hose so I got a new LVL beam to make a thicker top. Hope to have it all squared away in the next week.
That's how my week has gone so far. Have a happy and safe 4th everyone.
-
Went back to work today... :banghead: :banghead:

Today I was able to upgrade parts to my bandsaw and boy did they make a difference. I rebuilt my swing jig and it works well now. I am pleased with it so I think I will be now stepping up my game with building my longbows. I can't wait for my next bow which is for myself.
Here are some pics from the day...

I started a 66" D/R longbow..zebrawood riser, amberboo tapers and parallels, East Indian Rosewood veneers under clear glass. I got out my swing jig and added some black and white glass to the riser. I'm hoping to get it glued up friday afternoon.
-
I re tillered the longbow that I posted earlier after it pulled a long splinter in the backing.
After grinding off the damaged bamboo, I glued on a new piece along with a thin power lam, and now it is a shooter again and drawing 53# @ 28". 3 pounds heavier than before.
Dave.

I'm working on a couple more side quivers.
Then I'm going to mow the lawn! :(

At least you are walking.I would be on a stretcher crying. :)

You and me both! The only way I'd finish is if the EMT's pushed the gurney over the line. :)

I got one glued up and in the oven! I am building this for a friend's wife and I had her browse through Troy's web site for the veneers she wanted. Here is what she choose.

^^Nice. But your shop is too clean. :D
Mine is so dusty the kids have taken to making mountains and hot wheel tracks through the piles of dust.
-
I gave a bamboo tri lam to a co worker who wants to get into trad archery.
He shot a wheel bow for the first time a while ago and has been asking questions about shooting longbows, so I offered to give him one.

Started hauling water to one of my tucked away food plots today. Had the wettest spring in a LONG time this year. Now it's so dang hot and dry my plots are burning up! Gonna be a lot of trips with this 250 gallon tank but there isn't any way to get a bigger truck or trailer to this plot. (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-07/57887A07-D498-4E65-BA6F-6685D0705ECA_zps9rcsr3co.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-07/57887A07-D498-4E65-BA6F-6685D0705ECA_zps9rcsr3co.jpg.html)
A buddy is loaning me a 2000 gallon tank to put on my trailer to do my other plot that I can get to with it this weekend. Gotta try! Come On Rain!!!

Got the first two coats of finish sprayed on the limbs of my first takedown recurve, I will bring it by the local archery shop get a final weight on it and put the last coat of finish on it.
Also got a dozen arrows stained, and painted. Gonna do a marbled cresting on them once everything dries and I get time.
Here is a previous batch I made up, not really sure what color fletching to do on them yet... Maybe chartreuse and blue??? What do you all think?

Nice looking arrows.
Finished the two side quivers and put a new cover on the target bag.

Needless to say I was a happy daddy when these guys showed up!
-
Awesome Joe! Those should serve you well!
-
Congrats Joe! I'm highly jealous of the drum sander. It's on my list!
I opened up a new trail to one of my plots today. Now I have access from both sides so now I can hunt no matter which way the wind is blowing from!
-
that is some awesome machinery. Envious!
-
Congrats on the toys.. :) Very nice..
-
hiya all, been away for a long while- but back in business- was back in my shop today
fixed my bandsaw- new bearings all round- gonna make me some dust!
-
Didn't even notice you were gone.... It sure was quiet while you were away...
-
Finally got a functioning sander so I'm back to making wood dust. Got 3 bows that need to be finished. I'm sure thankful for how the people at Home Depot were willing to help get me back up and running.
-
now i know what i was missin'- not the bow building expertize- but all the love and effection :D
-
We're here for you Wayne. Anytime!
-
If you love something set it free, if it returns it was meant to be!! Lol. Or something like that!
-
wondered where you was at Wayne!lol
-
I was supposed to be working on an outdoor privacy screen project to be installed on a friend's deck, but the wood I was able to get was rain soaked, so, while I waited for it to dry out, I pulled a longbow out of the failed corner and re-built it. I ground off the backing and thinned the core before gluing on a thin power lam and new backing. I'm finding that a long, thin power lam extending 2 inches past the fades helps prevent any tendency for the bow to hinge there.
By late evening I was pounding arrows into my target with a new hunting weight bow. :archer:
I'll post pictures when it's done. Today I have some dry boards to get sawing on.
Dave.
-
Good man posting again Wayne. Now mark can stop bugging me thinking your mad at him ;) ;)
Oh and don't worry we will make sure to turn big pieces of wood into little pieces of wood on the band saw when I get there on sat lol.
-
lifes to short, and way too many good people to waste time getting mad.
thats what 2x4's and dark alleys are for :D
gonna be a great time"re-processing " pretty wood!
-
This morning I went out and bought some bow woods. I got some small pieces of blackwood, a nice piece of pau ferro and a straight grained piece of osage for lams.
Dave.
-
Just getting ready for my flight to Waynes. Week of fishing and bow building. Yay!
-
What a day of bow building I had today!
I took that nice board of pau ferro and cut out two risers from it. Then I cut them both in half and laminated them with two thin walnut spacers and an I beam of padauk for one and an I beam of purpleheart for the other. Then I cut out core lams of padauk and purpleheart for them.
These are going to be Christmas presents for my Niece and Nephew.
Things were moving along nicely and a couple of friends dropped by to tell me that we're invited to a good buddy's milestone birthday party next weekend. After they left, I thought what am I going to give him? So I grabbed a riser from a pile of half finished ones I have, cut out a core lam, got it tapered...etc. And three and a half hours later, I have a longbow all glued up.
I can't believe I got it done so fast. ( I sure hope it turns out right, it looked good after clamping ). Luckily, I had a riser and belly lams ready to go. These parts take the longest to make and I need to get this bow shooting by Monday in order to finish it and shoot it in some before Saturday.
Happy, happy, happy. :archer:
Dave.

Cut probably a lifetime supply of Osage today! My buddy let me go onto his land and take whatever I wanted. Came out with seven 5.5 to 6ft. logs. 4 of the we're 7 to 9" dia. one 10", and a 12". Split them all but the 12",,,only halved him and will work on him tomorrow. Lot's of staves and it is an impressive sight to see. Can email a pic to someone, if you'd like to post it for me. Going back next Monday for a few small maple and black locust!
-
Ken, I love you man. LOL
I replied to your pm.

Popping the static tip recurve out of the oven today and I think we will be done the quiver today to.

Stopped by to bother Sweka tonight. We examined my swap bow, a new Miller bow, and an old Herter's. Then we did a little shootin'. Johnny was breaking not only the nocks, but the whole back of his arrows. So we put one up in front of his bag to see if we could finish the job.
I have to say I was impressed with how many times we hit it from distances up to a bit past 20 yards. I guess the aim small, hit small thing works. Towards the end we started aiming for the crest and JohnBoy hit it perfectly:
We rotated it 90 degress and tried to see if we could snap it still. And then in an effort not to be outdone, yours truly evened the score:
About then we figured we'd better call it a night before we started feeling bad about ourselves and went inside to have a fresh beer and play with his new puppy. Good times...
-
Sure stop and see Johnny boy and snub the ole man! That's ok I'll get even.. :)
Nice shooting though...
-
yup great shooting guys.
-
Roy, I'm hoping to have a reason to head farther west next month. I'll be sure to stop when the time comes. Would love to break some of your arrows too. Plus, I need to check on how big the pup has gotten.
-
Sounds like a plan, Dave.
Pup is now 65 pounds and 9 months old today.. :)
And she loves to retrieve sticks thrown out into the pond..

Made some Santos Rosewood Wedges and picked out some clear glass for a set of ILF limbs I need to build. Using Bamboo tapers with Santos rosewood veneers. I have some black and white ebony veneers that will go in a set of hunting weight limbs if I can find the time before hunting season starts Sept 19th. I may be forced to hunt with some ugly olive ash burl limbs I made back in April..

Got 2 limbs glued up, started grinding squeezed out smooth on off of limb edges with my grizzly 6x80... Sander wouldn't shut off, unplunged it, cleaned switch..still wouldn't shut off. Ordered 2 new switch's and a graphite pad from Grizzly. I sold my 6x48" sander a few months sgo but I still have my little Rigid Sander for a back up if needed.. Going to drill holes for ILF detents and add overlays later today.
-
You sound busy Rob. I need to start making progress in the shop again. Made a few yellow shavings last night, trying to drop a few pounds from a osage bow someone gave me that developed negative tiller after a few shots. I have a young lady who's grandpa wants to introduce her to something without wheels.
Mike, I like that a lot. Nice job.

Mike, nice riser, what is that modeled after, looks familiar.

here's the unstrung profile--the static section starts about an inch off the table--I'm super happy with the shot characteristics on this one!
tony--its just my interpretation of a late 50's recurve-with influences from all over!

-
nice looking bow! I like the 50's look too. put in 8 1/2 hours at the job got home at 3:45, changed into my shop clothes..I was grinding on my limbs and my "on call" phone rings..got called out for a few hours..got home and cut up a wild hog ham, got the tenderizer hammer out and made a small pile of fry meat..Helen came in and we used dry tempura mix with Tony Chasere seasoning sprinkled in to fry the hog meat in coconut oil. Next I made some pepper gravy..and some black eye peas. had a quick dinner..then I washed up and went back to the shop. I got my overlays glued on and made some tip overlays from red and black phenolic..got them glued on too. Made it back in the house at 11:15..its 11:45pm and I have to start my regular work day in 6 1/2 hours, unless the on call phone starts ringing again

Another nice haul for Ken..
I'll take those short ones in the right front off your hands, Ken.. :)

i am envious, all that yellow gold! Very hard to get over here, it's possible but not easy.
-
I'm jealous too Bob. Not quite as hard here, but it doesn't grow in peoples' backyards generally either. Tuesday night I had my first real experience tillering a osage selfbow. I've worked with it in trilams and risers before. But I quickly fell in love with those yellow shavings and how well the things shoots. I need to figure out how to get more! Maybe a trip to the midwest?
-
Today has been a good day. Weather is aweseome after last night's storm and cold front. After sleeping in til 0630 (on purpose), I saw a giant rafter of turkeys crossing my neighborhood driveway. Looked like four adult birds and about a dozen large chicks. I hunt deer around my house, but have never seen a turkey or even sign in the 12 years I've lived there. I hope this means that they're moving in!
Then I stopped by a hardwood store on the way back from a site visit instead of lunch today to see if they had any myrtle. I did find a nice block of figured myrtle that should make about six longbow risers. But before I stumbled across that, I found some giant yew slabs. They called it rustic yew, and it had a lot of character due to the rotted/spalted areas. I figure there will be a lot of waste. But it also had a ton of very tight grain, totally clean, knot-free wood to pull lams out of. The board is 1-3/4 thick and 8' long, I took home the one on the right.
It's not a huge haul of osage, but I'm still stoked and finishing the full day at work is gonna be tough.

That store looks familiar. Bastards never had yew anytimes I stopped I there. Fortunately I've had my auction trigger finger working and have been building up my supply whenever I see undervaluation of yew.
Bought me two live edge slabs of yew recently that I think should yield some good lams. Both are around 2.5" thick x 4" x 40". Very tight ringed. Counted 150 rings on one and 160+ on the other. Pretty cool to think those trees were growing while the civil war was fought. Plan is to take one of the slabs and slice off the live edge, rip it into 2 billets and build a super gnarly ELB. I'm talking branches sticking out and everything.

I finished these ILF long limbs this afternoon. 52# on a 15 inch riser. Veneers are Santos rosewood with bamboo tapers. I only got three arrows shot when it started raining..I am very happy with the limbs, very quiet and dead in the hand at the shot..too bad I made these for one of my friends, I would like to keep them for myself.. (http://i596.photobucket.com/albums/tt46/Robertfishes/shanesbow_zpspovnrcwd.jpg) (http://s596.photobucket.com/user/Robertfishes/media/shanesbow_zpspovnrcwd.jpg.html)

Fine veneers on those limbs. I think it's awesome you're building IlF limbs.
-
1.Roughed out 5 Osage staves and a set of billets to speed drying time.
2. Cut (almost) to length 4 additional sets of billets.
3. Glued a hickory backing, which the edges lifted on,to a maple board. Going the try and cut it out anyhow.
4. Glued a hickory handle and hick tip overlays onto a hickory board
5. Cut out and sanded a hickory backed maple board flat bow,,,,made from scrap wood. Probably tiller and blow it up today!!!

LOL, Ken...

Saturday my daughter and I went to a shoot, quite a turnout. I had trouble finding parking -- even down the road. No warmup, my first arrow was center of the 11 ring. And we went downhill from there. After taunting my daughter about how she better not miss that giant bedded elk target, guess who put his arrow in the ground a few inches in front? Yep, that was a lot farther away than it looked. But the weather was beautiful. Later in the day I confessed to my wife about buying the yew board and the block of myrtle. To my surprise, she wasn't upset except that she thought she could have found me the myrtle for cheaper online...
Yesterday I got some work done in the shop and cleaned a bunch of stuff up which always feels good. A little buddy and his dad stopped by and after splitting and stacking firewood for a few hours we relaxed and got his son shooting. It's always fun to see how quickly they go from arrows all over the place to all their arrows in the target.

I finished out the night by wet sanding out my daughter's bow and putting on a few coats of wax. It's been done for months except for dealing with a touch of orange peel in the finish and wrapping the handle. Hasn't stopped her from shooting it, but realized at Saturday's shoot I needed to get 'er done.

Nice!

Boiled up a full pan of my favorite black giriko and worked on quieting the knee of my right brace. Still down with some kind of adjustment issue, gonna see the doc if it won't heal. Tracking a blade I commissioned, waiting on it to cross the Pacific. Just a holding pattern generally.

Tonight I shot bows with Mark Chronister (grouse11). Mark is actually a seasonal employee where I work for the US Fish & Wildlife Service and I happen to be his supervisor. He's also an aspiring bowyer and although he hasn't built an entire bow yet, he has made a couple ILF risers which turned out very nice. I told him that if he can build an ILF riser, he'll have no problem building limbs or a one-piece bow.
Anyway I got to shoot his ILF and it was very smooth. He also brought along a short recurve Turx Turning built for him and that is a cool little bow. Totally different from what I'm use to shooting, but fun. And Trux's craftsmanship was as excellent on that bow as on the one he made for me during the swap a couple years back. So Mark got to shoot another bow from Trux.
Good time and Mark and I will be shooting together more often. (He also shot better than me).
-
John- did Mark show you a picture of the deer he shot with that short bow? It was a bruiser.
-
Yes, I have seen the pic and it was a bruiser.
And Mark was really impressed with the speed out of the bow you made for me.
You got a fan club for your bows here in central PA
-
I glued up a ILF recurve limb at 4 pm, its in the oven baking. I went with Santos Rosewood veneers back and belly. I'll get the other limb glued up tomorrow afternoon.. I found a nice roast in my freezer from a doe I got in Ohio last year, it will be part of our dinner tonight or tomorrow. Getting more Steroid shots in my lipoma tumor tomorrow, Doc thinks it will shrink it..sure hope so, hunting season starts in 11 days and i havnt shot a bow in 2 weeks.
-
Good luck Bob. I hope they do the trick and you're back to full speed quickly. Would love to see what those limbs look like when they're ready to have their picture taken.
-
Got more steroid shots today.. I pulled a limb out of the ILF form , prepped form and glued up #2 limb.. took #1 limb over to the edge sander and cleaned the excess glue off of the edges. Pulled belly tape off just to get a peek..the back veneers are flatter cut and have more black/ brown to them. Nice, Robert

Started cutting myself a new practice area after a tree fell on my old one. That DR is excellent physical therapy.
-
I just finished building this set of ILF limbs. specs are 54# on a 15" VPA riser, Santos Rosewood wedges and veneers, amberboo tapers, black and red phenolic tip overlays.. I started getting packed for this year's moose hunt. Boy, the year has flown by! I hope the fall goes by nice and slow... :archer:
Dave.
-
Best of luck, David. .
-
Robert, that is a real nice looking curve!
Do you make limbs for others?
-
Tonight I got my broadheads sharpened up for opening day in a couple weeks. A couple swipes on a strop was all it took. (It's easy sharpening when you never got a shot at anything last season).

Unfortunately I can relate only too well.
-
Starting to reduce the limbs on an all hickory poor man's horn bow. Belly is toasted, rawhide is soaking. Give it a week and I should have a bow.
-
Got back from moose hunting this morning. We did the 22 hour drive in 19 hours. 3 trucks with trailers, and 7 guys. We saw plenty of moose and eagles and a couple of adult wolves.
My partner and I had a 40 minute stare down with a 60 inch bull that caught us in the open, but wouldn't come closer than about 45 to 50 yards.
Another buddy of mine had two cows and a calf in front of him, but we had no cow tags and the dumb a$$e$ who make the rules put calves out of bounds for archers this year.
Another buddy got this year's trophy for the best miss.
We did have a great time though!
My re-set button has been pushed and I'm ready to go back to work tomorrow. Of course I'll have to explain to those non hunters that we were after non suicidal creatures and not shopping for meat. ;)
Dave.
-
Finished a 58" D/R and shot it a bit. My arrows aren't spined high enough for it tho.
-
I just looked at my signature line and I think I'm becoming a vegetarian. :scared: :knothead:
I need to bring in some game with my bow!

Your brace height is a little low old timer.
I wont say nuthin about that there glass bow
-
Put the last coats of finish on three one-piece recurves this morning. One set up nice, the other two are still tacky on the risers. They are bocote and cocobolo. Anyone have similar troubles? I was finishing them in the garage but brought them into the house where it's a little more temp and humidity controlled. Right now they're hanging from a ceiling fan in the living room  Hope the kids leave them alone. Really need to ship them out in the next couple days.
-
Hey cabbage you wanna hope no one turns the fan on!!! :bigsmyl:
hey Roy that's a big porch hanging over the tool shed! :bigsmyl:
-
I guess it,s okay. :)

Had an interesting shift tonight. Got a call for a moose in the downtown area of my city. Found a nice bull moose in a persons back yard. Got out of my cruiser in an attempt to move him in a certain direction... I dunno if he felt cornered or the reflective lettering on my police coat caught his attention but he hunched up and full on charged me. Good thing I got quick feet because that's the fastest I've done a 20 yard dash to get to the other side of my cruiser. Here is a pic of the moose I snapped.

Figured yall get a laugh out of that... Hope I can post it here... On a side note my most recent longbow is ready for the clear to be added tomorrow after I return from helping my buddy track his first archery kill.

If that's not a nice haul for the day I don't know what is. I've only heard rumors of Osage up here in NY ... Consider yourself blessed to have much of it.
Just found out the other day that last year or so ago my father in law had a huge mulberry limb fall at his place .... Cut it up and burned it before I even knew it happened .... Now I give him a list of woods I'm looking for ....
-
Since I've been doing a bit of scraping, figured I'd take the time to file the cabinet scrapers. It doesn't take all that long and the long ribbons of osage are the result. Now back to the task, eventually well, hopefully, a bow will result.
-
Glued up a RD trilam, Hickory, Merbau, White Oak and a Bubinga power lam. Handle will be glued on later. The three full lenght lams are each tapered .0015/inch. It is the first time I use this wood combo in a trilam RD bow so we have to see if it will work. I am also useing a brand of epoxy that is new to me(fingers crossed)

That is quite the shop.

Bought a new snow machine today, Ariens made in USA.
The old one on the right, it have served me well since 1987 and that speaks for American quality. It was time to buy a new one even if the old one still works. :)

That picture was cracking me up too .... "Look inside" is way too close to "place head here".

I keep thinking about the wet paint signs that a lot of folks have to touch.. Just hope Bue is a little brighter than the average bear.. :)
-
So what, I need a haircut anyway. Could be an American navy cut. :bigsmyl:

What really makes me cringe is the little paddle that's usually included with the snow blower to be used for clearing jams!
Dave.

Sipping a touch of WT101 after a long weekend that followed a longer week. I did successfully make it through almost 200 Girl Scouts this weekend teaching beginning and advanced archery. Before leaving the club yesterday, I paper tuned for the first time in years. That was quite enlightening. I think I need some new arrows for this bow I've been shooting.
Typical of my luck, as I drove out to the range just after daybreak Saturday morning, I saw some deer at the end of my pasture along the drive making their way toward my favorite blind. After receiving the call from my wife to run back and get something, I saw them feeding right next to the dang thing. I hope to be out there next weekend. Well see if they come back next weekend.
-
I took three shots at game today. All inside 20 yards. clean missed all three! Went home and shot 4 arrows inside the bottom of a beer can at 20 yards....Just one of those days I guess.

Sounds like a waste of good beer...

Unless it was like that rot gut you drink.. :)

That's it, you're gonna be drinking some imperial IPA when I show up next. Seems like a possible waste, but it'll be worth the look on your shaggy face.
:bigsmyl:

startin to like you Dave !
bustin a gut just thinkin of the many faces of Roy after an REAL beer!

If that's the crap that tastes like tar, then you can leave it in Virginia. :)
-
I assume Roy drinks that crap beer because they don't sell Genesee down in PA ..... I guess that's only funny for those of us who have had the unfortunate pleasure of drinking Genesee beer.
-
I used to drink that, was my Dads favorite beer.
-
My dad's favorite was Schlitz. Probably gave him the Schlitz and that's why he never gained any weight until switching to Miller
-
You boys need some good Canadian beer.
The good thing about Coors is you can drink it all day with no effect.
;)

Dave.
I remember having a good laugh when I first moved to VA and some Canadian beers were sold as premium beers. I chuckled knowing in upstate NY it's close to the cheapest crap you can buy.
-
Now, now! Be nice. After all, I'm happy to drink Coors, and Rolling Rock and various other American beers when I visit the U.S.
Besides, I'm not talking about some of the export swill they send over the border. They're just getting rid of that stuff. The good brews are kept here.
:)
Dave.

Thought you fell off the face of the Earth John. Good to see you back. Now go build something lol.

I really do have to glue something up soon.
I have a couple ideas brewing for my next mistake.

nothing crazy.

Just gotta wait for the cork strip I'm stabilizing with epoxy thinned with acetone to come out of the vacuum chamber for the core.

Haha that's hilarious.
Save yourself the heartbreak and just follow Roy's build along. A lot of people are saying he knows what he's doing.
-
What will you do with the cork strip?
-
it's like gasket material.
I'll use it for a light weight "natural" core.
Kinda like a natural version of today's foam core.
-
wont the epoxy add a lot of weight? :dunno:
-
Interesting! Like fuji, I'm curious about the weight?

Guys...I'm sorry.
This was a failed attempt at humor. :knothead:
Didn't mean for it too sound serious.
...though it does sound interesting if one had time and $$$ to waste....lol
Guess I'll have to come up with something more outlandish next time. ;)

I would not have put it past you engineers.. LOL :)

goodonya mate- had me going!

Working on another short static recurve. Profiled limbs and go it strung up today. Man these statics are much harder for me to build than longbows.

I'd be interested in how she stacks up in performance against the TD longbows! Curves are harder for me too! Lookin good man!

Kenny we will have two of my curves and a longbow at your place next week. Lets do some testing. Do you have a chronograph?

Yes Sir !!

off to hospital in the morning [6.15!] to have double knee replacement.Sure hope it all goes well. Maybe I'll be able to get about easier then.
-
Wish you the best, Bobby.
-
best of luck bob!! you'll be skipping around the shop in no time!!

Good luck Bob! I had one done, not as bad as I expected. Do the therapy for sure , the pain relief was immense when healed up!
-
Hang in there Bob. I had one done last November. Like Kenny said, do the therapy.
-
thank you one and all! Heading off now to get it done!
-
Good luck Bob.
-
Another vote for do the therapy. I got ahead of myself on the braces and ripped my hip out. Sidelined me for a while. Be good and you'll be out there sooner.

Well, had a nice clear shot at a doe last week. Got the bow up, drew back, clean releas, perfect arrow flight ... Thwap! The arrow sticks right in the ground where I was aiming. Unfortunately the doe heard the bow and turned away hard. Clean Miss, pun intended. Anyway, not 20 minutes later I had a nice 8pt come through, even at 15 yards I couldn't sneak an arrow through to him. Let him walk.
After all that fun I decided I needed to cut better shooting lanes (new stand location) which I did Sunday.
Also decided I needed to go to a MUCH faster bow. I was shooting a hickory hickory Ipe tri-lam longbow 62" 47# with a 575gr carbon. It was probably struggling to see 140fps, and the tips are a bit big so it's a bit loud.
Put that down in favor of my favorite recurve. 58" 62# hickory walnut ipe. I had sidelined the recurve due to poor arrow tune. So I've been making up a nice set of new arrows, bare shaft tuning, fletching etc.
Ended up having to cut some 50-55# Doug fir shafts down to 25.5BOP with 125s to get it to tune and had to shim the strike plate a bit also. Always shocked how much effect center shot has on spine needs.
Got to do some shooting today to confirm broad head flight. Arrows came in 470gr +- 15 gr. man does that bow smoke them. The tune was great. Decided I would fling a broad head at the target at 30yds with a field point arrow already in the bullseye ... What's the chance anyway? Turns out the chance was good enough because I already ruined one of my brand new arrows. The broad head tune was just awesome and the blade ran right up the other arrow and scrapped it. Bittersweet.
No substitute for bare shaft tuning.
Figure it must be pushing close to 175fps, granted that's at like <8gpp but I think 475gr-500gr should do the trick. Point on distance also jumped to close to 50yds from the previous setup's 30ish yds. That should help me reach out a bit if need be.
Now i just wait for Veterans Day when I can get back into that stand. Rut should be on so it might be time to try some rattling and some scents ....
Arrows: sunburst rit dyed, 4" 'highback' shield cut. Masking tape and scissors to cut them. They came out like 20mm high, a little excessive but they seem to fly really well so what the heck.

Burned up my work computer's power supply and have been working on getting it talking right again. That and scraping hammertone paint off a riser. Got to have it clean to repaint it.
-
LittleBen I like the style of your fletching I think I'll copy it. I built a feather burner out of a $5 goodwill toaster and used the flat wire from one side to make the shape I wanted. Won't take much to modify the one I have to match yours. :)
-
Nice lookin arrows Ben.
Sounds like you're having a good time.
Keep goin at it.
I hope to connect before work in the morn...gotta be at work by 11:30am...so it'll be a short hunt...but every hour in the woods ups your chances.

Mentioned to my parents about my need to get back to the shop and work on an ash bow for my uncle from the ash tree he gave me a section of off of his property, and that I would like to make my dad a bow for his birthday next October. Got on the discussion of wanting to get my hands on a nice piece of Osage to make dad a bow and described the fruit and the names of "Bois De Arc", "Osage Orange" and "Horse Apple" and said it would be nice to find a local source.
Mom spoke up and said she had seen some horse apples right down a local road and in an area that I am familiar with and drive by ever so often (more-so to go to my traditional 3D shoots I go to every year). It peaked my interest so we took a drive today to look at it after work, and sure enough! Right at the very edge of the state road along the fence row where the two major state roads intersect not 5 miles from the house there was a long row of Osage Orange! Some of their fruit had fallen into the road and some was hanging on the leafless branches!
However its on the fence row to a local farmer's field so I am going to have to find out who owns that land and see if I can't get permission to harvest 2 or 3 (ok maybe all! :biglaugh: :nono: :p )
-
Tried out my new lamination dust blower. Don't want any wood dust on them nice lams before glueup. ;)

Yee Haw!
-
I've seen it all now.. LOL

Masking tape and scissors to cut them.
Ben, I like the fletching. I'm curious how you employ the masking tape to cut them by hand. They look as good as anything that's ever come off the burner.

Thanks, I must admit, in person they are not as perfect as a burner produces, but they're consistent enough the flight is unaffected and they look good ... but just not perfect.
I apply masks tape to one side of a full length feather, then just hold my template (card stock or thin plastic or w/e) over the taped feather and cut it with scissors. The tape holds the quills from flopping around while you cut. Good scissors are a must. Mine are crap and I sharpened them 3x for 3 dozen fletchings. I'm sure good fabric scissors would be perfect.
-
I'm going to try that.
-
Got me an order of boo.. Madake it's called, very nice stuff.

Dang Roy!
Looks smooth, clean, and great node spacing.
Think you can get 3 backs outta one?
-
4 maybe 5... Time will tell...
-
no kidding?
Must be bigger in dia than I can tell from the pics.
SWEET!
-
It's close to 4"..
-
Can't wait to try it out.. Buddy in Ohio says it's far superior to moso..
-
awesome!
-
Oh yes, some nice bamboo there. Have you got one of them splitters?
http://www.hidatool.com/bamboo/splitters
-
Where can I get some bamboo like that? I've been thinking about buying some more. I'm running a bit low.
Dave.

Yesterday I started making my first set of lams. I got the big drum sander last April. I got the board of yew a couple of months ago. But this year has been crazy and so it's taken until now to get started. I never even made a test run in all that time! First up was trying to rip accurate lams on the bandsaw. Check. Tonight I plan to run them through the sander. Tomorrow I hope to splice all of the lams and prep the riser blocks. With any luck I can glue up two bows on Saturday and get them cut out and rough tillered on Sunday.
One bow is for my Dad's 70th birthday next month and the other is the belated bow for the swap. Since they are both almost identical, I'm hoping I can knock out both in almost the same time as it takes me to do one. (Setup is always so much of the time.) Luckily for my poor swap recipient, my wife thinks the bow for my dad is worthy of priority in the house. Because of travel, I only have two weekends to get it done. I want to spray both at the same time so I only have to clean the shop and gun once. Therefore my recipient's bow should be shipped right behind my dad's. Wish him luck!
-
Looking good my friend!
Clear glass or black for the bows? That yew looks nice as far as I can see.
-
Green back, clear belly. Riser on top of the lams.
I bought a block of figured myrtle for the risers, but after cutting it open last night and seeing behind the wax I'm not sure it's myrtle. At least I've never seen red myrtle before. Grain is about right though, so maybe?
-
Couple buddy's came over last night.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTHc0BKCL0s&feature=youtu.be
-
Ya sure that's yew, David? I hain't never seen yew that clean..
-
Those guys seem to be some eager raspers, your newly sharpened ones? :)
-

Yup. Someone told me it is likely English yew. Don't know what difference that really makes. Little samples seem to perform well in the flex test. Very tight-ringed and dense.
Second from right. Overall board was 8ft long (1-3/4" thick). Lots of clean 3' long sections in it. A little swirl in the grain, but not bad. Not selfbow stuff, but I think it's going to make some sweet lams.
-
Ok cool...
-
That yew looks like it could make some nice bamboo backed bows Dave. It does look pretty clean.
-
Ya would think he would give you and me some, huh Ben? :)
-
No one has asked...
-
CAN I PLEASE HAVE A COUPLE LAMS OF THAT YEW, KIND SIR.. :)
-
Oops, just used the last piece.
-
LMAO, smarty pants... You are getting as bad as McKenzie.. :)

Especially after I gave the old man a lifetime supply of osage :goldtooth: ... Well maybe not lifetime, but it could be with how slow he's building these days .... Lol
-
Yup, I think he's skeered to get them new fancy smancy power tools dusty.. :)
-
Watch that yew dust, gives me a blasting headache!!
-
Some nice lams there. Yew dust gives me a headache too. I worked with Yew for several years without feeling anything, but it comes sneaking up on yew.Now I get a headache, feel strange in the chest and see pink half naked dancing girls. I try to sand it outside. Bue--.
-
OMG...
-
"Now I get a headache, feel strange in the chest and see pink half naked dancing girls."
Can yew send me enough to sand on?
-

-
LMAO.. :)
-
While time in the shop was limited this weekend, progress finally exceeded expectations. Saturday I as able to grind all of the lams, splice, prep riser blocks, and glue up one of the bows. Sunday I got the second one in the oven and then got the first one shooting; just needs final sanding now.
First time grinding my own lams. Well, I'm not counting pretending to while drinking at Roy's house last winter. Was a little frustrated at first with the inconsistency on the thickness. So I cranked it all the up and started sanding the conveyor belt. After that the lams were dead on in the middle, but still seemed to get a touch or snipe at the very ends (maybe 0.003" max?) I can't see how to fix that as it's a function of the hold down roller spacing. But I can't imagine .003 being that big of a deal at the tips or in the riser area, so I called it victory.
Yew dust doesn't give me as much enjoyment as Bue apparently. I am better about wearing at least a dust mask if not a respirator these days. The skin around my eyes was a bit irritated though as I went to bed Saturday, so I got up and washed my face and that seemed to do the trick.
-
Well, it's been a couple years since my last bow. Moved, started new job, new house, new workshop full of wife's furniture "projects".
Finally got it "cleaned" up, and made a tillering tree this weekend. Cut a few hickry' sticks out of a 1x6 that only took me an hour to find in the big box hardware store. Only decent one in the bunch, but it'll make a few nice shooters.
Considering trying a white oak backed hickory, any thoughts on that?
Anyway here's the shop

For some of you I'm sure this looks like a tornado hit, but for now I'm just happy to have enough room to do some playing.
-
Shop looks good to me.
I can't see the point of backing hickory with anything as it makes such a great backing itself.
-
That makes sense, I'll save the backings for the woods that actually need it
-
Think I wasted time with this hard maple, found what looks like thin bug trails under bark. Anyone know if this is still worth salvaging or use it for firewood?

My thoughts exactly. Canopyboy is the one who convinced me once and for all to abandon any wood other than PERFECT hickory for backing, and I've never looked back. I've also never had a backing failure since.

Decrowning mot be the ticket there. That will get you under the bug holes.
-
That is my thought as well. I have several cherry staves with the same problem and plan to drown and put rawhide backing on them.

Sitting in my buds camp in Warren county, Pa. About 5 miles from Tidoute, Pa on 337. 29 degrees outside and bear season opens tomorrow. Nothing like being away at camp in the mountains. Brought my 15 year old nephew along, this is his third bear hunting trip up here with me. The wood burner is the only heat for the camp. Purty cool stuff...
-
Nice part of the state Roy. Good luck with the bears and the nephew.
-
keep up with the woodstove and those decreasing resistance 12oz curls Roy. :campfire:
-
Called physical therapy gooberson... :)
-
I'm jealous Roy. You are old enough to be my uncle, right? :bigsmyl:
-
Ah Ben, knock it off... LMAO :)

Got one roughed out, gonna be my dad's Christmas gift this year. Hickory with maple riser and bubinga tip overlays. Family isn't doing Thanksgiving until Saturday, so gonna tiller it tomorrow. Planning to temper the belly and heat in a bit of reflex. Shooting for around 50#.

Ate, then ate some more, but it's Thanksgiving!
-
Had 4 adults, 7 grand kids, and 4 extra dogs here today for dinner. They are gone now... I'm winding down now, with my 5th beer... LOL
-
Sanded from 120-1000 grit. First bow in 2 1/2 years. 54#@28", 1.25" of follow. Plan to temper belly and put a slight reflex in.

Looks very nice..
This morning I had the pleasure of removing a tick from my belly. Was playing in the woods yesterday in the 65 degree weather.
-
Lol, I might not mind some ticks if I had weather like that, it was °5 and windy here yesterday morning
-
man , just seeing those wood bows, at extended draw on a tillering stick- while a photo is being taken- makes my heart stop every time! :scared: :scared:
nice looking bow though!

Any tick removal north of the waistline is no biggie. It's the southern ticks you gotta worry about. Growing up on LI, I've pulled more than my share of ticks .... Fortunately they've all been Yankees and no Confederates. I've heard some terrible stories ... Nuff said.

Heading up to the mountains this morning for the Pa buck season opener tomorrow.. Staying in another buds camp.. Taking my 15 year old nephew along, hoping to watch him kill his first deer. I've killed enough, it's his turn.. :)
-
Good luck to your nephew Roy. Have fun up in the mountains.
-
Good luck Roy (to the nephew of course.)
Drinking foreign beer and looking forward to my flight home tomorrow. Can't wait to finish those two yew bows. One in time for my Dad's 70th in two weeks and one to my poor swap recipient hopefully even sooner.
-
Good luck and enjoy sharing your passion

Buddy is making a bow for his niece for xmas. Maple backed Osage. First time on the tree.
I started another tri lam. Need to make the core lams next.

Is that your new boo Roy?
The node spacing looks fantastic!
-
Wait, did I miss something? Was the other trilam ever finished?
-
Yes that is the new boo, and the node spacing is great.
Cantalopeboy, no it needs shot in and I can't pull it, well I could but it would hurt like hell. See the orthopedic Dr again tomorrow. My guess is an MRI then surgery, because something just isn't right in the shoulder, and I don't want to aggravate it further.
-
Send it my way, I'll have my daughter shoot it in for you. Just make sure you include safety glasses.
-
Remind me to smack ya twice the next time you visit.. :)
-
I don't think you'll forget. But I should hurry I suppose to get there before the doc fixes you up, that way the smack is more like a pat.
-
Hi guys, I finally finished my kennym bow form and my digitally controlled owen. It is powered by 6x75w ligtbulbs and gets to 80°C (aprox. 180°F) in 20 minutes and stays within 2°C the whole time. I have small PC fan to help air circulation. The form is just hung on 3 eyelets. Here is few pics.

I've been making turkey calls for Christmas gifts. Never made one before so it's kind of a fun new experience. Maybe some pics later. Depends on how photogenic they are! :bigsmyl:

Took my dad to get some POC arrows today. Was able to get a few shots off with him in the rain and snow. All his arrows hit the target at 15 yds, I guess he still has muscle memory left!
https://youtu.be/9Pl5-GJSOPI
This is the first bow he has owned since he was a kid. His draw is somewhere between 26.5 and 27 when we measured. In the video I'm thinking 26.5 as the arrows were cut 28.5 BOP. Bow is 40@28. He can shoot more, but I'd like him to be able to keep shooting it for awhile. I was happy with how quiet it was. For those of you following the swap, this is the sister bow to Ralph's.
My sister and I (along with my wife and niece) surprised the snot out of him at a surprise party for his 70th birthday on Saturday his friends threw him. He's still recovering.
-
Nice!!!!
-
That's what I call making memories!! Good on ya David!
-
Nice David.
He shoots a heck of a lot better than you do.. :)
-
Just a hunch I have but I bet he loves the bow! Thanks for sharing.

This afternoon I finally got to something that's been lagging a long time: handle wraps for four bows that were otherwise finished this summer.
I got them cut and shaped to each riser with wetted veg-tan leather and stitched up tight:
Then I let them dry next to the fire:
Tomorrow I'll remove them from the bows, dye them, hit them with some finish/conditioner, and then stitch them back on with some barge cement to finish the deal. Three of them are due to go out in the mail once finished, although I might wait until the Christmas rush at the post office is over.
-
Very nice David.
-
classy
-
Very nice bows :)
-
Nice wraps.
What material did you lace with?
-
Very nice! Gonna be some happy people receiving those!

Today I got a bow heat tempered on the caul. I'm going to back it with sinew.

Dave, that looks like an osage bow, what's the deal?
Clint that's a mighty short bow ... One of those 100#@ 15" bows?
-
It's a 24" bow just for fun. Going to see what kind of distance I can get out of it.
-
Well Ben, I enjoy the selfbow thing too. That bow is a sweet shooter, going to make someone's teenage granddaughter happy I hope.
Mike, that's just temporary lacing. I think it's the stuff you buy to go with a stitch-awl. I have a big roll of it. When I put them back on after dying and finishing, I use a dark brown, waxed, linen thread. Looks like this:

Sinew backed, osage crossbow Clint? Suhwheet!

Wow - David those are beautiful bows love the full osage.

Releasing a Bobcat caught in a leghold trap, sounds like fun.

Ya the dude said it was a trip.. :)

Cool cat.
My brother had to release a fisher he caught at Moraine State Park in Butler county recently because they're not in season on this side of the road. He wasn't happy to be detained.

I found myself being stalked by one while turkey hunting in Ohio last spring.
Dave.
-
Dave, bet you was the biggest turkey he ever seen. LOL
-
The ugliest for sure! :knothead:
He must have seen me move through a tiny opening in the blind. You should have seen him go over the fence.
Have the docs figured out what's wrong with your shoulder?
Dave.

Haven't been in contact with them yet. Figured I'd give them a couple days.

One lucky grandson!

Bow is looking nice - does he know you are making it or is it a surprise?
-
He knows I'm going to make him one, but he hasn't seen it yet. I won't show him till it's all done.. :)
-
Every time you show a new build it sorta carries me away!
One day I'll build one of those TRL thingies. Right now I am being pestered to do two ASLs for family friends and two of my choice for grandkids. They all expect their wood to be encased in glass.

Not the first time he brought a bird in the shop, I have a doggy door, and he likes to bring in birds and eat them. This one got away, but once in a while I come in and find feathers all over
-
I did my yearly total shop cleansing. Only 140 gallons of chips, dust, curls and shavings. Slow year I guess. But the shop is squeaky clean and feels 50 square feet bigger. Today I'm taking my air filtration unit down and blowing it out backwards with my air compressor, hope it starts running better. I've abused that poor unit.

Monterey, there is no screws. The baseboard is placed on two (I don't know what you call it in English) sawhorse like things and the posts are just fastened with small clamps. Piece of cake. :)

looks solid Bue.
I haven't made many bows, but a base with flex got old real quick.

Nice Bue! That's the kind of overkill I like to see. Yu could probably glue up 3 at once and not get any flex in that beast.
