Title: critique and advice/flipped tips new pics
Post by: ffdiggs on January 21, 2015, 01:32:00 PM
first off its been awhile since I've been on. Everyone was very helpful on the last bow I posted. Good news its still alive and I'm actually hunting with it this season. Work and family issues have kept me from making sawdust for awhile, but my daughter recently got me out of my slump and motivated again. So I have a few pics to post and could use some advice.. here is my roughed out stave pre-floor tiller   (http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad129/wdigby71/osage%20bow%202/rough%20stave/IMG_1266_zps01898000.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/wdigby71/media/osage%20bow%202/rough%20stave/IMG_1266_zps01898000.jpg.html)    (http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad129/wdigby71/osage%20bow%202/rough%20stave/IMG_1265_zps6bee134c.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/wdigby71/media/osage%20bow%202/rough%20stave/IMG_1265_zps6bee134c.jpg.html)    (http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad129/wdigby71/osage%20bow%202/rough%20stave/IMG_1264_zpse9a09ffa.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/wdigby71/media/osage%20bow%202/rough%20stave/IMG_1264_zpse9a09ffa.jpg.html)    (http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad129/wdigby71/osage%20bow%202/rough%20stave/IMG_1272_zps55387652.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/wdigby71/media/osage%20bow%202/rough%20stave/IMG_1272_zps55387652.jpg.html)
and here it is straightened and tillered with 3" of reflex

does the string run down center of the handle it might be just the picture but to me the handle looks like it might be jack knifed off to the left when looking at the first picture but the tiller looks great at full draw.

I don't know if that was one of the issues

arrowhead, actually that was a problem, in the first picture that is actually the center line drawn on the back. As I tillered it the bow kinda went back to its original shape. I ended up heat bending it at least half a dozen times. Which caused me another issue that I'm hoping to get help with. I apparently got a little over zealous while clamping and it left an indent in the belly. hoping maybe to steam this section and see if the fibers will swell back up.  (http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad129/wdigby71/osage%20bow%202/issues/IMG_1299_zps9f117d1e.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/wdigby71/media/osage%20bow%202/issues/IMG_1299_zps9f117d1e.jpg.html)   (http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad129/wdigby71/osage%20bow%202/issues/IMG_1288_zps6fbafffe.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/wdigby71/media/osage%20bow%202/issues/IMG_1288_zps6fbafffe.jpg.html)
the pictures make it look worse than it is. right now the bow is in a holding pattern until the rawhide i ordered gets here. Very thin rings on this one

Nice work on what looks like a challenging stave.  Hope the dent comes out for you.

Yes a bit of steam will bring it back out.
Tiller looks dead nuts on to me. Good work  :)

The bow looks very nice. The outer top limb looks a tad bit stiff but other than that it looks fine. How doe it shoot?
Sight down the string with the bow braced and that will tell you if the string lines up.

thanks everyone, gonna try a little steam tonight maybe. A buddy of mine just gave me a lead on a downed osage this morning so I may be on a scavenger hunt later. the limb with the stiff spot is actually the lower limb, I like to get pics at full draw with limbs swapped. It sometimes looks different. Gonna take a little more off to get it bending, but not to much don't want to lose my positive tiller. stay tuned. Still have to rawhide back it yet.

If the handle is still off center try blocks just past the fade outs then with dry heat clamp riser down you don't have to go much to get tips to line up make sure to use some cooking oil on riser before heating that way wood shouldn't scorch I've had to do it to a couple of stubborn bows the blocks are a couple of short pieces of 2x4 with v cut out hope that helps

Arrowhead, thats the course i ended up taking, it seemed to do the trick. The string runs down the center now. Have not put to many arrows through it yet, wanna wait until its backed since the rings are so thin. don't wanna push my luck.

Well turns out the rumor I heard about a whole row of osage trees turned out to be true. Looks like I might get to take out the ones the wind has pushed over and up rooted.

Looking nice man. I will have a mostly finished pyramid bow that I need to do final tillering on. Been nervous though about pulling it full draw with it being so dry right now up here in the north.

Dave i understand completely, really dry here too, plus i've heated mine alt least 6-7 times. Got one small knot right on an edge I keep waiting for it to go "BOOM". I thought about steaming it and give it one final tweeking, but I think I will leave well enough alone.Get some pics of yours up, I always love seeing other peoples work.

well I went and did it, I flipped the tips. was a nervous wreck the whole time, I was worried it would break. Thanks, everyone. I was pleased with the way they turned out.

Pat B, it was easier than I was expecting, heck I had a harder time trying to make the form and get the curve I wanted. I was pretty nervous the whole time, kept waiting for it to crack. never did, not evan any splinters.
Still got to back it yet. Stay tuned.
