Title: Hog Hunts In/Around Michigan ?
Post by: MichiganMike08 on March 04, 2008, 09:29:00 PM
I was wanting to see if anyone here has had experience with hog hunting in or around Michigan because it looks like a lot of fun. I have heard about " Ranch Hunts" ,but it seems like they are all high fence operations. I have nothing against these, but I have always hunted fair chase and prefer that.

Mike, the MI DNR website has a map of the counties with free ranging feral swine. There are only 21 counties in the lower penninsula that DON'T have hogs. They are all over the place including Bath MI. A buddy of mine shot one a few weeks ago in Jackson while he was coyote hunting. You can hunt them year round, as long as you have some kind of hunting license. The only thing the DNR asks is for you to check it in, because they are testing for diseases. That is why they want to irradicate them. Good luck, I hope to see some during turkey season. Jim

Thanks Jim. I heard there were feral swine in MI, but I didn't know there were so many. Hopefully between the DNR and listening around I can gain access to some hog hunting.

Finding the free ranging hogs is very diffacult. I've been trying every other weekend since the start of the new year and have not cut a track. The snow has been pretty deep in the areas I've been hunting with snowmobiles buzzing around everywhere so I am looking forward to have bare earth under my feet and better hunting. I honestly think there are fewer hogs out there then what the DNR says but I figure if I put the time in I'll find some. Hunting the ranches is what it is, meat in the freezer not heads on the wall. It's a good time with friends and a lot of fun Also, it's not as easy as some think as you still have to get close to make a killing shot and those hogs don't really want to die.
