With deer season winding down I figured I needed another project, and what would be better than a bow!!! Got a shipment from Big Jim yesterday! (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-12/A0032EC8-2E65-4B72-BDE9-30AF747BC857_zpsfo46jrrm.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-12/A0032EC8-2E65-4B72-BDE9-30AF747BC857_zpsfo46jrrm.jpg.html) cocobolo and Tiger myrtle riser with cocobolo veneers! I'm gonna build this one for a buddy of mine. It's a surprise! Hope he likes it. Im not gonna do a build along cause everything I learned I learned from you guys. But I will post a few pics as I go!
-
Some good looking cocobolo
-
I thought it was bacote but whatever it is, it's beautiful!
-
Yeah, I thought it was bocote also.
-
I'd be buying me ah new band saw before I tackled that purty wood. :)
-
nice
-
It's actually darker than it looks here. I've got an overhead light right above it. Maybe that's why. Roy, I already got the riser pieces cut down so I'm pretty sure I can get by without it the rest of the way. I can grind down ther riser and limb profile on my big sander if I have to. But just in case I have been throwing a lot of sweet talk at my baby!! Lol.
-
That is some seriously nice timber there!
-
It's pretty stuff.
REALLY PRETTY for cocobolo.
Looks just like bocote to me...and I am a big fan of bocote.
...funny what lighting will do
-
Got my lams all skived and glued together this afternoon. But I did make a rookie mistake! Had my board clamped to my grinding table, (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/4A37D238-90A9-4B26-8B7D-AB65A9CF46A0_zpsqfjrcxkf.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/4A37D238-90A9-4B26-8B7D-AB65A9CF46A0_zpsqfjrcxkf.jpg.html) guess I didn't have it all the way to the belt and startd grinding the first joint on a set of parellels. Apparently I didn't have a good grip on them either! (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/A93AA86D-7A43-4055-92BB-25A415149D6B_zpswublwoti.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/A93AA86D-7A43-4055-92BB-25A415149D6B_zpswublwoti.jpg.html) I couldn't have lined that shot up any better if I tried!! Thank God they didn't break. Just had to touch up the ends a little!! Lesson learned!
-
better buy a lotto ticket!
-
No buy ten! You'll be rich!
-
You guys from east Texas..
LOL
-
Sorry, but that's pretty funny.
Glad you didn't ruin any materials.
-
It was pretty funny, after I stood there and looked around trying to figure out what just happened!
-
Ah heck it's only a glass bow... :)
-
Very pretty wood.
Does that qualify as a "lam Robinhood?" :)
-
Good shooting though... ;)
Dave.
-
That had to be an interesting moment... You got lucky all around.!
-
Real nice group :archer:
-
Got her glued up this evening. About what number bow does a guy stop stressing out during a glue up?!!? :knothead: (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/350D3C43-0A2D-45E7-BCB7-B08DFBFB6FBB_zpsez8fydcq.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/350D3C43-0A2D-45E7-BCB7-B08DFBFB6FBB_zpsez8fydcq.jpg.html)
-
I couldn't help but peal the tape off and take a look. Lighting isn't that good. Love that coco! The glass is streaky but what's a guy gonna do??! (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/FC1A223C-3083-4D0C-B06E-E50494D01EE9_zpsiaftw1uu.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/FC1A223C-3083-4D0C-B06E-E50494D01EE9_zpsiaftw1uu.jpg.html) (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/C1C69758-39D8-441E-BABB-BE7C54BEC635_zpsdpvlqbng.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/C1C69758-39D8-441E-BABB-BE7C54BEC635_zpsdpvlqbng.jpg.html)

:knothead:
-
  !!!!!!!!!
-
posting to remember to check this out. That looks great so far!
-
Put some tape back on and got the limbs profiled. That's as far as I'm gonna get this week. Headed out in a few hours to take my oldest daughter hunting in west tx. I'm taking a bow along because does and spikes are still open out there! (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/2B3DB4AD-A20A-4C32-8276-82C992C689AE_zps6cy4mplc.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/2B3DB4AD-A20A-4C32-8276-82C992C689AE_zps6cy4mplc.jpg.html) (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/47AE0BB9-CE33-49CD-BF1D-00E4CE87E115_zpsw7osifme.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/47AE0BB9-CE33-49CD-BF1D-00E4CE87E115_zpsw7osifme.jpg.html)
I really wanted to put a string on her and see it bend before I left. But looks like it'll be next week.
-
What kind of finish is that? :)
-
Albino bat wing!
-
Sweet.. :)
-
'albino bat wing' :biglaugh: :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
-
I'm back! Got the string grooves cut in and put a string on and checked weight. Pulling about 62#. Hoping to end up a little under 55 by the time I trap and round the edges. Tiller is about 3/16 positive. I also picked up some Red Stag antler for overlays the other day. Gonna have to splice a piece in the handel area but it wont be visible by the time I shape the grip and put a wrap on it. What do y'all think? (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/3FDA3F6E-7243-49DC-AA35-0CFBE0D317B6_zpspvxfpurx.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/3FDA3F6E-7243-49DC-AA35-0CFBE0D317B6_zpspvxfpurx.jpg.html)
-
think it's going to look pretty darn good!
-
Should look very good. Bue--.
-
Red Stag antler!!! Now that is really going to be cool. That's some good looking stuff. If you have any extra, I'd be glad to take it off your hands. Lol. Nice job so far. Can't wait to see the finished product.
-
Love those coco limbs... Looks great!
-
Got a little more done today. Work keeps getting in the way! Prepped all the antler per Big Jim's instructions and glued em up with smooth on. (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/C915B7C8-29DB-4A18-A771-07278FB574D0_zpsnpwmsicw.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/C915B7C8-29DB-4A18-A771-07278FB574D0_zpsnpwmsicw.jpg.html) (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/A3A9E641-28DA-47BF-A2AA-8AC9505F13D6_zps61ooqit8.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/A3A9E641-28DA-47BF-A2AA-8AC9505F13D6_zps61ooqit8.jpg.html) With these clamps I keep going back and checking them every 15 min or so for the first couple hours. Guess I'm a little paranoid! :scared:
-
Geeze, ya glued them on upside down.. :)
-
Phoenix, if I had extra id gladly pass some on. I learned 2 things while doing these. 1. Buy more than u think your gonna need. 2. Get the biggest flattest pieces you can! I had to grind these thin enough to get them clamped down that by that time I had very little room for error! I just hope they turn out!
-
Roy, do I need to start my own "thumpin list"!! :deadhorse: LMBO!!! you'll be glad to know that I did edit out my slippers this time! Just for you!!
-
Why, did ya have your bunny slippers on today? :)
-
Close but no cigar!! (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/1F494891-0B1F-4805-B47B-284B7FC696D0_zps9feqz9bc.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/1F494891-0B1F-4805-B47B-284B7FC696D0_zps9feqz9bc.jpg.html)
-
LMAO...
-
Thanks for sharing!
-
Thanks for sharing. I really like the cocobolo. Can't wait to see it finished. Josh
-
I was able to work on it some more this evening after work. Got the grip, tips and shelf roughed in. Still not happy with the tips but I'll finesse them along when I trap the edges.
(http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/0DA792BF-AC86-4379-BD9C-5FC6E5627AE0_zpsnkc3ydok.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/0DA792BF-AC86-4379-BD9C-5FC6E5627AE0_zpsnkc3ydok.jpg.html) (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/896F8934-0C34-4D1A-B0DD-16F4DC1E7C4E_zpsoil5dr8e.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/896F8934-0C34-4D1A-B0DD-16F4DC1E7C4E_zpsoil5dr8e.jpg.html)
-
Coming along nicely. Bue--.
-
Very nice...
-
Alright, trapped the limbs and rounded the edges. Got er down to 57 lbs. still got to fade in the overlays and round the edges a little more. Hope to get down to 55# by the time I get to final sanding. Took it out and put a few arrows through it and it hits Hard!!! My arrows for my 64"er were way weak. This one is 62". And it's Fast!! (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/08675001-5A5D-4AD8-A62B-B5DB6B3A4DB4_zpswy9nsjsc.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/08675001-5A5D-4AD8-A62B-B5DB6B3A4DB4_zpswy9nsjsc.jpg.html) (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/BF1F475F-BCA8-4080-8C0C-4981C4428980_zpsqqvxblen.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/BF1F475F-BCA8-4080-8C0C-4981C4428980_zpsqqvxblen.jpg.html) (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/B0BF5260-0AC8-40C0-B2D5-530CF2359295_zpsgawss0t9.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/B0BF5260-0AC8-40C0-B2D5-530CF2359295_zpsgawss0t9.jpg.html)
-
That's looking great!
-Jay
-
looks great!
-
Looking good!
-
Yea, I made weight!! That's something you'll never hear me say outside of bow building! Lol. Anyhow, she's 55# at 27" and 62" ntn. And I'm pretty happy bout how she shoots! All sanded down and ready for some buffalo hide! (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/E93DAB9E-0A4C-468F-9459-D3D0A98BF6A6_zps3o4b7a17.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/E93DAB9E-0A4C-468F-9459-D3D0A98BF6A6_zps3o4b7a17.jpg.html) (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/12F05B5B-B850-43E1-9EFB-983FBF8521B8_zpsretvhoph.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/12F05B5B-B850-43E1-9EFB-983FBF8521B8_zpsretvhoph.jpg.html) (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/2429AA74-22B2-481A-BAF9-4041EF865687_zps5xjk7exu.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/2429AA74-22B2-481A-BAF9-4041EF865687_zps5xjk7exu.jpg.html) I'm still not crazy about the tips. They look fat to me. Think I'll shave em down some more. What do y'all think?
-
Look fine from my end!
-
Awesome! Good looking bow- those antler tips and
overlays came out nice.
-
That's one to be proud of!! That red stag antler looks great. It's hard to judge the tips without seeing more of the limb, but from that angle, it looks like you could trim a little weight off. The shape looks good though.
-
Thx guys, The tips are 1/2" wide but the thickness is what bothers me. I'm seriously considering grinding these off and going back with some thinner pieces. They are bugging the crap outta me! (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/2C319700-1D81-49CB-9684-B1FDC4A74A9F_zpsdikow6mt.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/2C319700-1D81-49CB-9684-B1FDC4A74A9F_zpsdikow6mt.jpg.html) (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/B2040962-E386-440F-9A55-764FAB7F1DB8_zps8nixturp.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/B2040962-E386-440F-9A55-764FAB7F1DB8_zps8nixturp.jpg.html)
-
Now I see what you mean. You'll not likely notice any adverse affects from them, but if they are aesthetically displeasing, I'd fix them. Not sure what you used underneath the antler, but some scrap .030 black glass works great, and blends into the limb glass flawlessly. You could even grind it down to .020 and be safe with that anler overlay.
-
Thanks, I used black woven glass under the antler to reinforce the tips.
-
Very nice and a good job. If the shape of the tips bother you it looks like you have plenty of material to make them smaller. I know one wants to keep the outer decorative skin of the staghorn intact, but sometimes one has to file it off. Happened to me. Bue--.
-
Very nice job!
-
Yup those tips suck... Why don't you just package that bow and ship it to me? I'll shoot it for a couple years and if I don't like it then I'll ship it back.. :) LOL
Or you could take the tips off, use thinner black glass or don't use glass at all, thin the horn on the bottom side and glue them back on. Or just ship the bow to me.. :)
Very nice I think....
-
Well Roy I would, buuuutt. This one is going to another bud! Maybe next time! I think I'll do as Bue said and just remove a little more material. Make the fades more gradual and round em a little more while trying to leave some of the outer "skin"! If I still don't like em then I'll take em off. Thx for the "tips"! Lol
-
They look good Randy, if anything I would just round the sharp corners a bit and leave the texture on a strip in center....
-
Those tips look awesome... i really like that bow! nice work.
-
Well, that's a little better. (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/287227D7-DA4E-4A77-980D-61E6D1F1E09E_zpsifusqkvy.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/287227D7-DA4E-4A77-980D-61E6D1F1E09E_zpsifusqkvy.jpg.html) (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/162586AA-9281-40E4-B185-D857C82E673D_zpsx0gv9awe.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/162586AA-9281-40E4-B185-D857C82E673D_zpsx0gv9awe.jpg.html) definately learned a few things on this one! I'll post a few more pics after it gets sprayed. Thx everyone!
-
Nice job!!
-
Looks good to me
Side note I might have to polish an antler tips for my next bow. that might be sweet.
-
I think it looks nice, good job.
-Jay

All done finally! -
Turned out real nice. Bue--.
-
Tips are still fat... :)
-
It is already deadly and it is not even glued up yet :scared:
-
Roy, you might wanna duck! I just picked up a hammer and threw it in a north easterly direction!! :knothead:
-
Ifin ya throw a hammer like ya shoot a bow, then I hain't skeered.. :)
-
LoL. I'm a fixin to move yer name to the top or yer thumpin list so's ya can kick yer own butt! :smileystooges:
-
Lol! That's funny right ther!
Turned out great. I like the addition of the beaver tail.
-
Beaver tail makes the handle look fat too. :) LOL here comes another hammer
-
Well I'll be darned. A huge tube with a bow that looks exactly like this one showed up at my work today!!
Hey Roy, the tips not only aren't fat they're downright dainty. The Critter did a super job on this bow. The cocobolo is super cool looking! The bow really reminds me of a Marriah Chinook LB. Always wanted one! I guess this officially closed the book on the 2014 TG Bow Swap. Thanks again Randy.
-
Dad gum! I didn't know that was a swap bow. I'da been more than happy to wait for that one! Great job.
-
Congrats on a sweet bow.
-
Well technically it's a backup bow. I wasn't in the swap last year but my moto is "no man left behind!!". Beach, sorry bout the streaky glass and sorry the package was opened. I sent you a pm with some other details! Hope you enjoy!
Ps. She likes a Heavy arrow!!
-
The streaks in the glass look worse in pictures than they do in real life. You had that thing packed nine ways from Sunday. Those gorillas must have thought the glue smelled like bananas to want to rip off the PVC end cap!!
Thanks for stepping in to finish off the Swap bow for me. My patience paid off for sure!
-
awesome looking bow you made there.
-
Can't believe I missed your post on here beachbowhunter.
And thanks crittergetter your efforts are really appreciated.
Congratulations to you both.
