My advisor from when I was in graduate school at WVU recently told me his son had a renewed interest in archery and he asked me if I would build him a bow. Of course I said yes.
And I figured while I was at it, I'd build myself one too since I didn't get a shot with the the bow I was using this past season. I figured if it doesn't have any luck in it, it's time for a new bow ;)
I put the final touches on my advisor's son's bow tonight. It has black glass, bubinga riser and overlays, and I hit my mark of 40# at 28". I hope it will make a good Christmas for him.

The finish was still a little tacky on the bow I built for myself, so I'll get pics of that one up in a day or two. It's the same design as this one, but different woods and glass.

I really hate this time of year. Get's dark to dang early to get good outside pics. So you all will just need to look at my kitchen floor for now.
-
Nice looking bow - bet he will love it!
-
Nice Job John. Like the looks of your R/D design. Really a great looking bow

Gorgeous John. Love that braced profile. Looks quiet and smooooth to me.

Great looking bow. I love that mild r/d form.
-
Beatiful bow. And yep I believe it is going to be a Christmas to remember for one young man!
-
ya well... nothing out of the ordinary there....
you always build the sweetest bows, John- this is no different :D
very slick, uncluttered lines- beautiful work...again!!
-
Very nice!!!!
-
That's a great looking bow!! Very classy.
-
Thanks for the compliments everyone.
I shot it a little bit tonight before I packed it up for delivery. (You know, I just had to make sure it wouldn't blow up ;) ) It seemed pretty speedy considering the arrows I was shooting out of it were overspined and about 12 gpp. It should zip pretty good with arrows down in the 8 - 10 gpp range.
The bow I built for myself is taking forever for the finish to dry on it. I'm hoping to have it all dressed up by the weekend so I can play.
-
That one looks great John!
Now.... quit holding out on the other one!
You are out shootin it instead of taking pics! :D
-
Looks great! Let's see the other one!

Here's your proof Roy. The dang finish is still a little tacky, so I got it hanging in a warmer/dryer place - my living room by the Christmas tree. Details and better pics to come.

Nice! Wouldn't mind seeing one just like that under my tree. :)
-
Nice bows John! Waiting for more pics!

OK, I got the handle wrap on it tonight and got some pics.
The details....It has a morado riser, actionboo limb cores, dark brown glass on the back and light brown on the belly. It came out at 49# @ 28", which is about 5# less then I wanted. I had 0.050 glass on hand (courtesy of Kenny), but I usually use 0.040 glass in these mild r/d bows. So I wasn't sure how much my total stack should be and took a guess. I thought going from 0.040 glass to 0.050 glass would add more weight than it did. Oh well, I'm getting older anyway and I'll know what to use for a total stack on the next one. I'll give it a real workout this weekend.

Love it John! That 48# sounds just fine to me. Smooooth as butter I bet.
-
Really like that bow you made yourself too. Those handle overlays look great against the brown glass.
-
Jweska I love these mild D/R bows you make I have two strips of .03 glass and would like to make one like yours for myself about 35 to 40#@26" could you please help me make a successful mild D/R bow like yours?
Thanks
Dan

Sweet looking bows John! I can't wait to see the hero pic with these bows in it... Still waiting for my own hero pic with my own bow. Hopefully this year is the year!

Wish I was on your Christmas list.....beautiful!

Thanks guys. I'm kind of surprised to see this thread brought back up. It's been a while. That bow did draw some blood last year, but I made a bad shot and didn't recover the buck. My first non-recovery with a trad bow. I was pretty bummed and dang near gave up on hunting with trad bows. Since then, I've gone back to my straight ASLs and will be using my reverse handle ASL this year.
Djoseph - I wish I could help, but I've never built one of these with 0.030 glass, so I don't have any recommendations on stack thickness. Also, if your form isn't exactly like mine, any stack thickness I give you is a guess. My advice would be to build one and then once you see what weight it ends up, you can have a much better idea how to adjust for the next one. Sorry.
