Title: Help, is this a problem?
Post by: Mark Middleton on November 21, 2014, 01:51:00 PM
I fell down on some rocks on a recent hunt, and dinged the edge of the upper limb on my bow.  It is a Hunter's Niche predator, and the ding is on the belly side, about mid limb. Is this something that is going to get worse and lead to the limb starting to delaminate? Is there a way to fix it?  Thanks in advance for any help.

If it were mine I would saturate the area with loctite 420 and watch it.

Might sand it a little to keep the glass fibers from hanging on your clothing or hands and pulling more loose

Ditto on the Loctite 420 (another similar glue is Hot Stuff CA glue-- available at Woodcraft stores.  Comes in 3 different viscosities, I think.  You'll want the thinnest [watery-est] one so that it can wick deep into the damaged area).  Both Loctite 420 and Hot Stuff are CA (cyanoacrylate) glues-- high-quality super glue.

Put some in/on the damaged area, let it work its way into the crack, maybe put on a little more if it all wicks in, wipe of any excess, and clamp to squeeze the damaged area back together to its original thickness.  Be careful not to over-clamp-- don't want to do further damage.  Let the glue set up for several hours or overnight. remove clamp, and use very fine (300-400 grit) sandpaper to smooth the repaired area.  A little Minwax wipe-on polyurethane on the repaired area to match the surrounding finish, and you're good to go.

Thank you all for the advice.  I will try the Loctite 420 and see how it goes.

Treat it like an airplane prop.  Take a nock file and file it until there are no signs of crack then sand off sharp edges and apply whatever super glue you like.  Yes you will have a round divit on the edge of you limb but it will go no further.
