Title: Is this a stupid idea?
Post by: Kopper1013 on September 17, 2014, 07:24:00 PM
Hey guys just curious,

I've been thinking about making a three piece long bow, key word here is "making". I was sitting around my workshop and though to my self, what if I build a long bow, and right out of the form before I do any shaping or profiling I put it in a mitering chop saw and cut the limbs off at a given angle, could I make a three piece bow this way or do I need to make both limbs and riser individoualy? Just wondering

first problem i see is the wedges will be absent.
but no reason that you couldnt laminate the two limbs simultaneously , then cut them in half, but if it were me , i would just make two forms, and lay them up separately, then just cook them together.
cheers.

I have seen some bowyers that will glue up both limbs on one symetrical form (kind of like a form for a 1 piece bow) and then cut the thing in half to have two limbs.  To fujimo's point - the wedge would basically be a very thick power lam.

The riser is an individual build no matter what you do if you want a 3 piece.

I wouldn't call it stupid, but there are definitely better ways to build a 3pc. I'm sure you could make it work, but I foresee many problems arising.

If I'm not mistaken, Stotler makes a 3 pc takedown exactly how you are describing. They make both recurves and longbows this way. Albeit the risers on their bows are very long and deep in the fadeout area to accommodate. I believe that they use 2 bolts to attach the limbs.

Stotler's longbow version is called the gamegetter elite....if you want to check it out. I'm pretty sure this is what you are proposing to do. I have no idea if they are still making them like this, but the method does indeed work.
