Why should I make a mollegabet bow? What is the advantage if any?
Mike
-
dang it, now you are causing me to look up yet another thing. :jumper:
-
ah, one of those !
Why ? Because you don't yet have one ?

It is one of the oldest style wood bows that has been found...and it seems to be one of the most poplar wood bow style made today.
If you consider this style bow's age and the engineering to accomplish it back in stone age times, it is a pretty amazing accomplishment.
-
why not?
-
The advantage is that the very narrow-but-deep rigid tips act like siyahs, giving added impetus to the arrow compared to a conventional flatbow limb tip. Think of an atlatl mounted on the end of each limb.
The Mollegabet design is dated back to about 12,000 (yep twelve thousand) years ago!!
Second good reason is that for a non-recurve bow they are just plain sexy! I've been thinking of making my next wood-glass composite in the Mollegabet shape.
-
I've only seen/shot one and it was an osage bow 58" long. It was shockingly fast with a range of arrow weights and shot nearly silently.
I was thoroughly impressed.

Here you go guys, this one was build by the Master himself, he let me shoot it at NALS and I could'nt pass it up.

Who was the Master?
-
strunk?
-
now that is a cool bow...
way underpowered for a tough bloke like you- it would prolly fit a skinny reed like me better :D
-
Yup,
Mr John Strunk, I am very lucky to call the man a good friend.
Wayne not underpowered by any means my friend, I have a date with an Elk in a few days and hope to show you how under powered this bow really is
-
Is that a 3rd lamination I see in there? What is that dark streak?
-
yeeha- I win the bow!!!- jus send it my way.
you are truly blessed to call such a great man your friend.
we need to see pictures of the elk hunt.
did you ever chrono that bow.
what is your general opinion about mollegabet bows?
-
Ken, yes you see a third lamination it is Jatoba in between the Boo and Black Locust.
Wayne, it shoots absolutly amazing, I have not chronographed it but I do shoot high till I get dialed in.
If you could'nt tell already, I like it!!!
I will keep you posted on the Elk extravaganza.
Have a great Labourday weekend guys.
Regards.

I have a lot of red oak, hickory, and maple, so what should I use to build it. Remember now I am new to this. Maybe all three?
Mike
-
Mike, start with the hickory. It is the toughest and most forgiving.
-
Here is one I made from a white oak board with straight grain. I backed it with rawhide prior to skinning for added protection. While Oak Molle (http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php?topic=35344.0)

Hickory, then Maple. Red Oak is OK but the other two are much superior.
