Post by: duck66dawg on July 26, 2014, 01:13:00 PM
Does anyone know of a sawmill that might sell milled Osage lumber? I hope I am in the correct forum, please excuse if not. Thank you Bob (404) 289-2245

3 rivers is a sponsor here and they have bow stave sized lumber available. Also I was on the net this morning and there is a lumber mill that has some shorter than stave size boards that could be spliced for a bow. PM me for their web address.

They had some at Wilcox Lumber in Rusk, Texas one time.  They used to have it at the Hardwood Barn in Mt. Enterprise, Texas.

Terry Dunn, in La Vernia, Texas has it, but he charges a lot more for it.

I saw some nice boards at a woodcraft store.  I see there is one in Atlanta.  Might be worth a call if you live near there.

Everything I've seen at woodcraft is argentinian Osage ... not related but may still be bow wood, and the color is similar.

Argentinian Osage Orange - MACLURA TINCTORIA
American Osage Orange - MACLURA POMIFERA
They are related.I have used both and prefer the Argentinian. The grain on the Argenitian is a little finer and the rings are really tighter, smoother and straiter. But I would take either one if I could get the chance.

I just found this guy up in Kansas.
I was having a horrible time trying to find Osage to make axe a handle. I stumbled onto this guy. From what he tells me he has miles of this stuff. He is a small family sawmill and is priced well. I bought a rough cut board 2x10x9' for a $200.. I can get a couple of axe handles, 2 bow staves and a bunch of spare out of the piece of wood. He even sent me pictures of the piece of wood before I bought it.

Thanks

Their price on web said $5 per board foot.
