Title: Help me pick a glass thickness
Post by: beachbowhunter on June 02, 2014, 01:50:00 PM
I need to build a TD LB with a total stack at 0.300.
I made my last bow with that stack using 0.040 glass and it is fine. However, the rule of thumb on the glass/stack ratio suggests 0.030 (20%) instead of 26.7% using 0.040 glass.  I guess I'm saying that it is a toss up based on percentages.

Based on your past experience, which would be most likely to make a faster, smoother bow?

If I drop down to 0.030 would the stack need to change?

You could go with a .030 and a .040 to get percentage, but not sure you will be able tell the difference in shooting.

I'm guessing if you drop .010 glass and add that much wood , you will see 2-4# less. Maybe somebody who has built both ways will chime in tho.

Like Kenny, I'm not sure you'd notice a difference between .030 and .040.  Playing numbers games is OK but they're jut numbers.  I suspect Kenny has the right balance - one .030 and one .040 glass and call it good.

Where 'bouts can you find that Osage glass?   :saywhat:

I looked around a little and didn't see any .030 glass. I'm probably just getting too nerdy on this. Thie bow I just finished is a little lighter than my new target and shoots fine. I guess I will just go with .040 all around. Thanks!

I have used the .030 glass before and realized no benefit...didn't really care for it either...unless you are using carbon inside the veneer on the back.

I also use ULS only and it is not available in .030...although you could sand .043 down from the slick side so you won't hit the scrim...again not worth the effort in my opinion.

I get .030 glass from Bingham's and use it in really curvy bows like my Scythian design:
