first of all i know nothing about this.i want to make a bamboo backed bow.and some day i still want to buy one of wingnuts kits.but to get me started.i would like to know about tools.the only tools i have is a 3/4 horse band saw, palm sander and the rest is hand tools, draw knife, rasp that sort of stuff.so,can still do it with these tools.thanks john
BTC, With one of Wingnut's glue-ups all you will need is a scraper and maybe a rasp. After a little hand sanding at the end and you are good to go. Pat
I am going to beat you to it, I will be blaming you for this when my wife winds up to kick my butt.
All I want to see is pictures. Before, during and after. I love the Osage, I relish the Yew, but really something about that Boo.
laddy i am sorry about the wife thing.i hope it wont hurt to bad.what i am trying to say is.that i want to start a boo bow from scratch and was wondering about tools if i could do it from the ones i had or if i had to look into buying some thing.thanks john
The new TBB4 has a build along that we did on a multilam bamboo backed bow. I think it would be real helpful in getting started.
Mike
I would go ahead and invest in Dean Torges' DVD "Hunting the Bamboo Backed Bow". www.bowyersedge.com (http://www.bowyersedge.com)
Here is a buildalong of a benefit bow done a couple years ago. It's done with a yew belly but the process is the same: St. Judes BBY Buildalong (http://residents.bowhunting.net/sticknstring/stjudesbbyp1.html)
Here's a buildalong I did in 2002 after Dean's video came out, basically following his process: Hunting a Bamboo Backed Osage Following Dean Torges\\' Video (http://residents.bowhunting.net/sticknstring/hbbb1.html)
Have fun. They are awesome bows.
John
If you get one of Mike's kits, go ahead and get the DVD with it. It will walk you through the process.
I'll second the Torges video suggestion as well.
blacktailchaser, all you really need in the way of tools is a couple of rasps and a scraper, (and a knife could be used for that)...agree on the torges video, but you'll need a couple of books to get an idea about tillering.
good thing is that you can get some cheap Red oak 2X1" and that will aloud you to mess up a couple of bows in the learning process without killing your wallet, 3Rivers now sells already prepped bamboo
John,
Where in Oregon are you at?
Stan
thanks guys for all the info i am soaking it up like the sun.hey stan right now i am living in prineville.BUT,if every thing goes the way i want i am hoping to be moving in july to newport.i dont know if that will be closer to you.but i do know you love trad bow and blacktails...later john
Bandsaw is handy. Other tools include a rasp, hand plane, scrapper, spring clamps and sandpaper.
Great build along here:

Hey John,
Well, I'm a little south of Eugene. Give me a holler if I can help you.
