Title: Where to Buy Unibond 800?
Post by: John Scifres on March 18, 2014, 10:48:00 AM
I went to Nelson Paint's website and they want $18 to ship a pint.  That's 2x the cost of the glue.  I can't swallow that.  Where do you guys buy it except on their website?  A google search for a pint qty. was not fruitful.  Pine Hollow wants $30 for a pint.

I think 3 rivers sells it also. Although I don't recall it being much cheaper.

John, the shipping is so expensive because that resin is a hazardous material. you will not be able to avoid that cost if you have it shipped to your door. best way is to buy from a vendor in person if possible. perhaps find a local woodworking store, cabinet shop, or paint store that will order it for you/sell it to you.

Thanks to all.

I wish I made enough bows to justify a gallon  :)

Jamie, I understand that's what Nelson says that FedEx says; but they are wrong.  It does not have to be shipped as a DOT hazmat.  I deal with hazmat for a living.  That's why I can't stomach the charge.  I have the money, it's just the principle of the thing  :)   I have tried some stores around but none have it.  But I do appreciate the ideas.

I always wondered why urea formaldehyde resin was considered hazmat. why on earth would any shipper categorize it as hazardous if they don't have to? liability? price gouging? probably both.   :banghead:

FedEx (and UPS to a lesser degree) is notorious for misunderstanding most things in general but the hazmat regs in particular.  And if there is a buck to be made by their misunderstanding, then so much the better.  One thing that confuses the situation even more is the way some manufacturers put things in their documentation.  Nelson has done their customers a disservice in this case by the way they wrote their material safety data sheet for this product.  You would think a paint manufacturer could do better.
