I am the dummy and want to start dipping my arrows for a crown dip instead of using wraps. After doing some research here I am looking at getting a little dipper with the gasket system. What laquer or paint do I use with this system. Is there something I can get locally at the hardware store to work with this? I want white crowns. Also do I need to seal this crown with something and if I do what? I am going to start on some aluminum's right now before I move on to woodies. Thanks for your help... :clapper:
I just buy the little dipper and Bohning paint with one can of thinner. then I thinn out the paint until it's about as thick as maple syrup or a little less....
Dipp the arrow to the mark then let it drip back into the dipper.
Keep it close to the surface and keep a needle handy for any bubbles that might show up. REMEMBER 2 THIN COATS ARE BETTER THAN 1 THICK ONE. after I dipp I let it dripp until only a few drops a minute run off . then I hang it to let it totally dry.
Another thing to remember is that no matter what color you crown dip... the first coat needs to be white... Learned that the hard way. ...
Another trick is after the crown dip dries from the first coat check for any bubbles that have formed on the shaft.... Take a razer and carefully cut them off. The second coat will cover it up if you are carefull and wait for it to completely dry before doing so. Hope this helps.
P.s. If you're doing alum. take some rubbing Alcohal and wipe down the shafts with a paper towel. I rubb until I hear them hummmm!!! You'll see what I'm talking about when you do it. This getts all the grease and such off the shaft. And letts the paint really stick .
Don't use the gasket for paint unles it is the stuff that is special made for the gasket laquer system. Joseph
I have the gasket system that I use with the big dipper and gasket lacquer. I do all but what I'm going to crown dip then after they dry I just crown dip them in Bohning paint thinned down like the directions state on the can. The Bohning is compatible with 3rivers gasket lacquer, I have thought about trying white gasket lacquer as a crown dip using the gasket system, I think it will work good. I struggled with off brands and spray cans but found that the 3rivers gasket lacquer and Bohning paint and thinner are worth the little extra cash. You can buy the thinner for the gasket lacquer at a hardware store but use Bohning thinner for Bohning products.
I made my dip tube from P.V.C. used Rust-Oleum thinned with mineral spirits, works and the stuff is easy to find. I don't believe you can use Bohning stuff with PVC.
I agreew with mark, ya can make several dip tubes from PVC and ya caneven make caps for them, all out of PVC for the cost of one store bought one. I use rustoleum thinned with paint thinner 70% paint 30% thinner. I also dip full length in oil based poly mixed the same way. I find this to be a better finish than Bohnings and a lot cheaper as well. Shawn
