Got this piece of boo to back a bow and it has this damage on the back. Is it too deep to be of any use.

If the damage ends up glued over the riser, it Shouldn't matter. In the working part of the limbs it might be a problem.
Dave.

Hard to tell without being there but I've made bows from boo that looked like that. Does it look like just the rind is scraped off?
-
Not sure Roy. I have not worked with Boo before so am not familiar with the feel of rind vs power fibers. I may scrape the section to see how it looks.
Dave, it will be in the middle of a limb.
-
I'll bet it's ok but I hate to tell you to use it, then it splinters up. Scrape it about 2 inches above and below then look at it. Scrape over the bad spot too, lightly. Remember just remove the rind, you will see the difference in color as it comes off..

Grind it flat and cover it with glass.
Seriously, if you are concerned about it, use it as a core wood, middle lam of a trilam or something like that. Would be better than spending a lot of time to have it blow up when you draw it.

Dave, I think I'll order some glass the day after Roy finishes his first glass bow. I have an osage slat that is already pre-tillered and this piece is shaped to go on the back of it. It is not the best piece of osage with some ill placed knot holes and other issues. I think I will glue it up and se it as an experiment. If it splinters or blows i will take what I learn from it. Both pieces have been kicking around the shop for a while and it is time to s!@t or get off the pot.

Sounds like a plan. I bet she holds together.

Well then chit:)
-
That boo is 100% okay IMO.
-
Mine too, Cory.. But I don't want it coming back on me, just cause I said ok use it:) So the test is on, Tony? :)

Well Roy the truth is I'm still running scared from the Thumpin List, so there is no way i would blame you for anything.
Cody, glad you like it cause when I'm done with this piece I am going to use the piece I got from you a while ago, to make a bow. This one is going to be a learning tool so when I use your clean piece I will have some experience.
