Title: 64" Glass Longbow build- DONE BLOODED!!
Post by: kennym on December 12, 2013, 09:39:00 PM
Planning right now , got some ideas(dangerous I know)in my head.

Got a few days off my real job, so we'll see how it goes.

64" D/R longbow

50+ @ 28"

Clear .050 glass ul (normally use .040 but got a diabolical plan)

some walnut veneers that had a 1/4" knothole in em

Grenadillo riser?? (maybe walnut and phenolic or all phenolic)

Amber-boo cores ??(maybe walnut)

I'll try to take some pics and maybe even do a build on it...              :dunno:

Kenny, all phenolic riser sounds interesting.. with a couple of wood lams added for the fades. I prefer a bow with a little extra mass weight in the riser.

Just messing with ya big guy.   PV did one a while ago called bear run.  All phenolic and lacewood.  Stunning.  Look it up.  Can't wait to see what you do.   I have a all phenolic one coming up.

Get that thing built by the 26th so I can shoot it!

I love walnut.  Been wanting someone to use some in some limbs.

That sounds like a good plan, Kenny. I would like to see your riser design with some phenolic in it.  I have been thinking about using some as well. Should look and feel nice.

Did a little between orders, heres what we have so far...

The patched lams.........

Ground to .040 "   ....

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0206_zpseb333989.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0206_zpseb333989.jpg.html)

The riser pieces from back/belly view....

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0208_zpsdcdcb0c3.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0208_zpsdcdcb0c3.jpg.html)

The scrap I found to rip to .250" for color on sides of riser....

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0209_zpsb9d6bac6.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0209_zpsb9d6bac6.jpg.html)

I actually think it is from the same board as the lams. Lucky find in the scrap bin!!

Gonna put the mating surfaces outside to show, hope that looks right when done!!
 :)
Title: Re: 64" Glass Longbow build- DONE BLOODED!!
Post by: kennym on December 13, 2013, 06:04:00 PM
And Norb- my diabolical plan is to grind the glass at .0005" per inch taper to reduce tip weight.     :D

So, from .050 to .035 on the belly glass and same on back, but in one piece....

Which I've done already.....

Oh, I went maple on core just to be different....

Ya know, if you have a 6" piece of scrap we could make something to go along with your new bow.  Just a thought...

I'm one of them backwards redneck wood bow guys, Kenny. Hain't got my Masters Degree in numbers yet! Kin ya break these tapers down into 1/64th, 1/32nd, 1/16th, 1/8th stuff? All them fancy .005, .035, .0005 just messes wif my head..

And where did ja get that blue wood from? I thought you was into pink? LOL

Also Kenny, anyway to order from your 'special' stock?  Don't know how many pieces you've got like that hiding in the shop, but sure would be happy to get my hands on some after the holidays!  Would of course pay more  ;)
Title: Re: 64" Glass Longbow build- DONE BLOODED!!

Nick, I don't keep special stock for my own use for sure. Just about anything I put  in one  for me has a defect I won't ship out. I just find a way to work around it or burn it. I may have the other end of that board out back, I'll look. But the price will be regular price.

Roy. Here ya go  .001 is1/1000 ,  .005 is 5/1000 , etc dat help ya?

Kenny, that's pretty funny right there! Lol.

Tapered glass!?? I'll be following this one for sure.
Title: Re: 64" Glass Longbow build- DONE BLOODED!!
Post by: kennym on December 14, 2013, 06:56:00 AM
Seriously Roy, most lams are 36" so a .002 per inch taper is .072" overall, and 1/16" is about .063, so that's pretty close to a .002 taper.

More confusing? LOL
Title: Re: 64" Glass Longbow build- DONE BLOODED!!
Post by: Dmaxshawn on December 14, 2013, 07:30:00 AM
Kenny are you building this bow the same weight as the five test bows you built a while back and with the same core thickness as the maple bow from that test so you can see the difference in the tip weight?  Just curios on this one understand the logic but you cant be using stuff  5/1000   thats just way too confusing.

Im tuned in on this

Post by: beachbowhunter on December 14, 2013, 11:58:00 AM
Pretty sneaky!  I don't know about how glass is made but wonder if the fibers are continuous through the piece. If you taper, it would maybe cause "grain runout"?  Wear a helmet   :goldtooth:
Title: Re: 64" Glass Longbow build- DONE BLOODED!!
Post by: fujimo on December 14, 2013, 12:11:00 PM
probably not too different than tapering a boo backing on a wood bow, and i guess the taper will be near the tips where it might not be as important

Kenny
do you run the same core taper with the tapered glass? side profile about the same?
got my eye on this one!!

Title: Re: 64" Glass Longbow build- DONE BLOODED!!
Post by: kennym on December 15, 2013, 11:19:00 AM
Norb , I hope the glass still works, I'm sure all the glass strands don't run full length  and the taper is only .016 of .050. If it blows you can say I told ya so!! Lol

Mike, I'm running same taper and profile to kind of see what happens. I am planning to take it to 1.25 wide later. I may need help stringing it before I narrow it tho!!!!
Title: Re: 64" Glass Longbow build- DONE BLOODED!!
Post by: kennym on December 15, 2013, 11:21:00 AM
Now , I hadn't thought about keeping the ratio the same, may be an added benefit!
Title: Re: 64" Glass Longbow build- DONE BLOODED!!
Post by: Roy from Pa on December 15, 2013, 12:48:00 PM
To be honest, Kenny. The glass is so thin anyway in thickness, I can't see the reasoning to taper the glass when width tapering will do the same thing. But hey, I'm no glass expert either...

You using tip wedges on this guy too Kenny?  What core taper are you planning on going with? Going to be a cool experiment!  You could be the first guy setting everyone up with tapered glass! Haha

But usually most fibres shall run through full length- even full coil, or with very very little grain runout! The fibres are produced endless; they are draged out of the melt ("pultrudiert"; can`t find a translation). But when you taper from one side the inner cohesion of the matrix shall be way enough to keep everything together...

Thanks Moe, didn't know that.

It will have the superlam in it with tip wedge and powerlam built into a .001 taper.

It will have a .001 taper on the back under the veneer and the glass has .001 total taper.

So the same .003 taper, thought about going to .004 since I was narrowing it a bit, but with more glass towards center, thought it might get a bit whip ended?

As far as custom grinding glass to tapers, its not in the plan just yet. Its hard on belts too, not just blades , besides being time consuming.....
Title: Re: 64" Glass Longbow build- DONE BLOODED!!
Post by: bornofmud on December 15, 2013, 11:03:00 PM
Hmm, I'd say .003 would probably be safer.  I'd imagine that taking off .001 of glass is kind of like having a .002 or .003 wood taper, though it's hard to say because the ratios are different.  You did a .004 with plam and tip wedges on the testing bows right? or was it .003?

And yeah, working fiberglass is a nightmare regardless of how you decide to go about it.  Wouldn't be fun putting those fancy tools through so much abuse on a regular basis! Regardless, excited to see the outcome of this thing!

What I might do then, is to put the ground side of the glass facing the core...

Yep, ground the glue side of glass.

Instinctively , tho, not because I thought of the fibers ... LOL

Justin, I been working on orders and doin the bow build as time permits. Would help if bowhuntin season was over too! Bout got yours ready to go bud.

OK, here we go with the riser, all pcs roughed up with 50 grit and marked so we get em in there right, but only the outside 2 can be messed up for grain...

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0210_zps8990edd8.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0210_zps8990edd8.jpg.html)

The EA-40 , mixed by estimation of 50/50 A and B, I had to mix a little more before I was done. Lots of pcs in there!!

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0211_zps5e829aca.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0211_zps5e829aca.jpg.html)

Note the plastic wrap, when all glue is on, I wrap the riser up to keep glue off my clamps and everything else! Vinyl gloves are cheap and keeps the glue off you....

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0212_zps0fa4f481.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0212_zps0fa4f481.jpg.html)

Glue is applied here and riser block wrapped up in plastic

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0213_zps93c98a9a.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0213_zps93c98a9a.jpg.html)

Now we put the 1/4" plywood blocks and some spring clamps on the sides to keep the pcs all lined up...

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0214_zps3e76a6a5.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0214_zps3e76a6a5.jpg.html)

Make sure the ends are flush with each other...

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0215_zps66224152.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0215_zps66224152.jpg.html)

Now put the rest of the clamps on, tighten in sequence and lightly, it lets the glue out . Go over them several times , giving each the same torque by feel. Now throw her in the easybake oven and wait....

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0217_zps8f434a16.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0217_zps8f434a16.jpg.html)
Title: Re: 64" Glass Longbow build- DONE BLOODED!!

I have whats probably a dumb question, but what's the difference between a power lam and a super lam?  :dunno:
Title: Re: 64" Glass Longbow build- DONE BLOODED!!
Post by: kennym on December 21, 2013, 04:31:00 PM
First 2 pics are back and side of riser all cleaned up.....

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0220_zps6cf51ef4.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0220_zps6cf51ef4.jpg.html)

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0221_zps3a1e6570.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0221_zps3a1e6570.jpg.html)

Now I clamp the skive jig on the old disc sander. That 20 year old rig still has the squarest table on it!!

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0222_zps4bc480aa.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0222_zps4bc480aa.jpg.html)

Here I run both back lams in it to skive an angle on it to glue into one lam. I grind the one next to disc, then switch places with em and run the other. No idea what the angle is, longer joint is better tho....

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0223_zps9015eadd.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0223_zps9015eadd.jpg.html)

Result....

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0224_zps67560f36.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0224_zps67560f36.jpg.html)

Now if you look toward the other end of bench, that is a 1/4" x 1.5" x 6' aluminum straightedge that I lay the lams on to glue the skive joint.

Lay a piece of plastic wrap over the aluminum at the joint area so you don't glue your lams to it.

I clamp one lam to keep it straight with the aluminum bar, then apply CA to BOTH lams, this gives you about 15-20 seconds to get them lined up with the bar.

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0225_zps4f7e952f.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0225_zps4f7e952f.jpg.html)

With all that done, lay the 2nd lam on , flip the plastic over and feel to see if they are flush. Then put a little plywood block on top and clamp . I clamp to bench , aluminum bar and all....

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0226_zps48bf5ada.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0226_zps48bf5ada.jpg.html)

Let it set for 20 minutes or so, then take clamp off and sand the glue line til it blends in with lam. You will still see a dark area where the glue soaked into lams. Won't bother, as long as you get it roughed up....
 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0227_zpsa310c15b.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0227_zpsa310c15b.jpg.html)
Title: Re: 64" Glass Longbow build- DONE BLOODED!!

A powerlam is just at the riser to stiffen a little thru fades, the superlam is a .001 taper with the powerlam ground into the same lam, plus a tip wedge on the other end......
Title: Re: 64" Glass Longbow build- DONE BLOODED!!
Post by: kennym on December 21, 2013, 04:51:00 PM
Here are the veneers glued together to make a full length lam.....

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0228_zpsc4661b3c.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0228_zpsc4661b3c.jpg.html)

The maple core lams skived and ready to glue....

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0229_zpsa8afb8bd.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0229_zpsa8afb8bd.jpg.html)

You can see I soak em pretty good. Might not need so much glue, but it works....

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0231_zps2739acb7.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0231_zps2739acb7.jpg.html)

Flip the plastic wrap over, put the block on and clamp after making sure the lam is laying on the straitedge....

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0234_zps77d426ac.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0234_zps77d426ac.jpg.html)

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0235_zps1f8d44ee.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0235_zps1f8d44ee.jpg.html)

Now I cut everything to length and mark the matching lam side to go out to see thru glass....

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0237_zps0b764b9f.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0237_zps0b764b9f.jpg.html)

Now to cut the riser for the bow back radius...

I clamp the riser on the swing jig and check from the pivot to see where the blade is gonna cut the riser. 27" radius on this bow fits really good, and 27" is gonna cut just a shade off the back of riser...

Here she is rough cut out. First I go to the disc sander and remove all bandsaw marks with 40 grit.

I take it before I cut the belly fades on it and clamp on top of all lams that go under the riser to the form to check glue lines. I had to adjust a little on this one. Only one trip to the disc sander tho, so not a bad one...

Checking glue line with lams/glass under riser....

  (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0246_zpsffdad080.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0246_zpsffdad080.jpg.html)

Now I grind the fades to feather ends.

  (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0248_zpsb24762ec.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0248_zpsb24762ec.jpg.html)

Glue the little helper on with CA, keeps lams and glass from sliding up the belly ramps and gives something to push them against. If they slide up over the corner of riser, it lifts them down on the belly ramp and leaves a gap!! Don't ask, I still cry over that one! Just grind it off when you shape the riser....

  (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0249_zps0b3e5c04.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0249_zps0b3e5c04.jpg.html)

Got everything laid out and ready on a new sheet of butcher paper, after blowing all dust off lams and glass...

  (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0250_zpse042a0d0.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0250_zpse042a0d0.jpg.html)

Got the EA-40 stirred well, and even took a pic during glue up(got a new camera, so this one is the shop cam)

I glue 2 lams wide when I can if they are close to same thickness...

  (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0251_zpse9ed9de8.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0251_zpse9ed9de8.jpg.html)

Full length lams are glued, so I grease the riser up good and clamp it in place so it don't get away from me!

  (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0252_zps9420ed22.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0252_zps9420ed22.jpg.html)

Glued all the belly lams and put on the stack, taped in place , covered in plastic, pressure strip, air hose, top form. Needed a bit of help to get bolted up....

  (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0253_zpsb31b4845.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0253_zpsb31b4845.jpg.html)

More uses for the plywood pcs, I just screw em on the form before airing up to keep lams in place side to side. I use 4 per side , 2 at ends of riser and 2 midlimb, the tips can be off a little....

I put 70 # in about 10# at a time and let it squeeze glue out in between shots off air...

Don't forget to wipe the glue down off limb edges before you bake it. It stays between the plastic sheets you put on form and on top of bow, and you can just tear the plastic and excess glue off and throw it out.

I'll be back on it pretty soon, had to shovel some snow and put some ice melt on the sidewalks.

At least it didn't blow around and drift!! (yet)

Out of the oven....

  (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0259_zps6f7304a4.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0259_zps6f7304a4.jpg.html)

Here is the limb with the boogers we wiped off after airing up the hose.....

  (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0260_zps084cb6e2.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0260_zps084cb6e2.jpg.html)

Here I've snapped off all I can, now to the old disc sander to clean one side up , then to the thickness sander to get it straight and both sides cleaned up....

  (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0261_zps4ba4aa09.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0261_zps4ba4aa09.jpg.html)

Peeled the tape off before it sticks permanently, don't look too bad...

  (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0263_zpsd79a7613.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0263_zpsd79a7613.jpg.html)

New tape on and run thru the big sander a few times, down to 1.470 wide....

  (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0262_zps422362e7.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0262_zps422362e7.jpg.html)

Now we mark where the limb taper on sides starts, and the nocks, 12" and 32" from centerline down the bow back, its a 64" bow....

  (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0266_zps046e087b.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0266_zps046e087b.jpg.html)

  (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0265_zps159e1d56.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0265_zps159e1d56.jpg.html)

You also mark center of limb side to side at start of taper, and at nocks. Then string thru nock to nock and check bow center, and the start of limb taper for being in line. This one was right on, but if it doesn't line up with center, move both nocks the same amount to get on the bow center line.....

  (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0269_zps927c0412.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0269_zps927c0412.jpg.html)
Title: Re: 64" Glass Longbow build- DONE BLOODED!!
Post by: kennym on December 22, 2013, 05:50:00 PM
Now I mark the tips at 32" line for nock, I start 5/8" wide , but intend to be 1/2" when done here...

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0268_zps60d417bb.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0268_zps60d417bb.jpg.html)

7 minutes later, the limbs are profiled using the old Skil disc sander....

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0270_zps535fbe2d.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0270_zps535fbe2d.jpg.html)

Here is a pic that p bucket got out of order somehow, checking the string to the line. I have lasered them, but with the curves, I don't quite trust it....

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0267_zpsb75842dc.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0267_zpsb75842dc.jpg.html)

Now to the nocks, remember the line I squared across the limb when it was full width, 32" from bow center for a 64" bow....

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0271_zps961e7011.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0271_zps961e7011.jpg.html)

A 45* mark at the line, we will curve the nock groove to the belly later, right now, I file on the side of line toward center, leaving the line....

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0272_zps65fb8c0f.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0272_zps65fb8c0f.jpg.html)

The round file...

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0273_zps62bcb1fd.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0273_zps62bcb1fd.jpg.html)

There we go...

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0274_zpsbe2a83d9.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0274_zpsbe2a83d9.jpg.html)

Always wondered why you lam guys put your string grooves so far from the tip. That aside it looks great so far.
Title: Re: 64" Glass Longbow build- DONE BLOODED!!
Post by: kennym on December 22, 2013, 06:02:00 PM
Now smooth the limb edges , taking care to not run a glass sliver in your hand, hurts like heck and don't do the bow any good either. Note how I curve the edge of paper up toward center of bow. That is the direction you will pick up a sliver.

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0279_zpsd953d15c.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0279_zpsd953d15c.jpg.html)

Nocks filed in, we find a string, have some old ones in shop to use while nocks aren't smoothed out yet, string her up and put on machine to look tiller over...

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0282_zps09aa940f.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0282_zps09aa940f.jpg.html)

Also check weight, really good!!!

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0280_zps84087571.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0280_zps84087571.jpg.html)

A little tweaking, tillering and sanding edges and here we are...

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0284_zps69b88788.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0284_zps69b88788.jpg.html)

OK, now for overlays, here I've peeled the tape after litely scoring on an 11" spot in center of bow. My skive looks pretty good under that glass.....

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0288_zps47113d47.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0288_zps47113d47.jpg.html)

Here we glue on the overlays, 1 black, 1 red, 1 walnut.  The actionwood pc is just for clamping it......

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0289_zps83a29881.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0289_zps83a29881.jpg.html)

Same on tips, don't forget to rough up the glass on the limb so glue can grab. I glued on with CA, but will wish I'd used EA-40 by the time I get done sanding the overlay to limb glass area.....

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0291_zps3873bc2a.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0291_zps3873bc2a.jpg.html)

And last one for today,I trapped her to the back but didn't think to get pics of that......

 (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0298_zpsc1245201.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0298_zpsc1245201.jpg.html)

I'll shoot her thru the chrony next time I have a bit of time here. I think I'm gonna like her a lot so far. Might be the last bow I'll need to build myself...   :D

The grooves are much closer to the tip now, that was still under construction, another thing I didn't get a pic of when done...

Everything past the groove is just unneeded weight IMO!

Awesome build Kenny!  That walnut is really beautiful, came out great!!

Also, are nocks usually measured to the top lip? I've always measured mine to the bottom lip as I figured thats about where the sting will be when it's on.  Wonder if I've been making my bows a little long now haha.

Thanks guys, wanted to finish her this weekend, but not gonna make it.

A note- the tips don't seem to hold as much reflex with the tapered glass. I shot it a few times , seemed fast enuff , and quiet. We will see when we get done and fire a few thru the chrony.

Glad I stuck with the .003 total taper.

It will pass the quiet test I think and that is waaay more valuable to me than fast...

On these, it comes out to a 3" shorter string makes about the right brace. So that's what I do with it...

Absolutely awesome build along Kenny. Gave a lot of us some useful tips! A masterpiece bow as well. Those lams are just gorgeous! The line about the bow falling off the hanger into the sawdust gave me a warm feeling. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one that has that kind of thing happen!  :)  Mike

Is that black phenol in the I-beam ? That riser is looking absolutely awesome. I guess on my next one I'll try something like that as well.
How about the tapered glass, do you notice any difference in performance or handling ? It would be great if you could do some speed measurements.

Thanks guys!!

It is a lammed together  phenolic riser with 1/4" walnut caps on sides.

A 250  CX heritage 31" long with 250 up front is working nicely.

I haven't done enough testing to see if the tapered glass helped or hurt. my feeling right now is it didn't make any difference , unless it is quieter. David Flanrey is here hunting on the lease and shot it today, he thinks it is pretty quiet.

Actually took her hunting tonite, but was in the right place at the wrong time I guess, saw zip!!
17* with a 20 mph wind when I went and 14* when I came out. BRRRRR

The bow not only looks great it is hot.  We shot it through crono with a heavy arrow and got 174.  It is real quiet.  Now if we could get the deer to cooperate.

Kenny, what do you think of the "I-beam" riser method?  I can understand how it might add stiffness, but on most (not yours of course    ) I don't care for the looks. Any noticeable difference?

Norb, I think the phenolic is a little stiffer and that should translate to better speed, but I don't have any data to back that. A solid glass riser glued up would be killer I'm thinkin....

Thanks Mike, I have a few character flaws!!  :D

Thanks guys!!
