I would like to interject some info here that may be helpful to those wanting to use antler-

Although you may not have issues all the time, it can be very common for this to fall off or separate  after the glue has curred if you don't take a couple precautions.

during the heat up process of curing the glue, plus normal expansion and contraction, the horn will shrink and your bond will give way. Also, there is fat stored in horn that will deter a propper bond.

To circumvent these problems, after grinding the back side of my horn, I heat it up with a heat gun and then drop it in a jar of acetone to soak for a  day. The heat will pre shrink it and the acetone bath will pull the fat out.
Also make sure that when grinding the back side that you are making it rough rather than polishing it.
I use antler and horn every day and after adopting this process, I have eliminated any of the common issues with overlay delam.

Nice job Tony,
BigJim

Big Jim is right, I've had some come off after awhile. I hadn't thought about oil in the antler. I thought it was because of to smooth surface on the antler. Thanks for the input Jim.

Your welcome, however, I think the shrinkage is a much bigger issue.

Early in my building career, I removed the lamps off a set of horn tips and when they cooled, I removed the clamps. I carried the bow from one bench to another and the tips just fell off.
I picked them up and reglued them and they never came back off.
