This id a hickory backed hickory pyramid bow. it is 67"ntn and the limbs are even length. I am pulling it from 1 1/2" above center to simulate how it will be pulled in the hand. 2' wide at the fade tapering to about 1/2" at the nock. Tips are glued on recurves ala 4est's board bow. I will be adding some hardwood overlays to the tips before the end. Right limb has a natural deflex in the outer half and the left limb had a little natural reflex. Tried to even out but stave didn't want to cooperate so left it as is as it wasn't too bad.

looks purty to me. i think... maybe... i detect left limb bending very slightly more at midlimb than the right? the photoshop trick would probably show it. very slight.... and i don't know if ... actually... and this is just a guess, im an amateur... don't take my advice, but i think the right limb should bend just a hair more midlimb to match the left.
Eric, that is what the gizmo was telling me at this point. I have evened that up and moved it another couple of inches. The little deflex in the right limb and the added length due to where I am pulling it makes me a little unsure. I think it is looking pretty good.
To me it looks stiff out of the fades and stiff in the outer third of the limbs.
yeah i think thats probably right sporthunter. i tend to be afraid to touch the fades cause i have seen so many hinges there that i leave them stiffer than they should be, and i think my eye has learned to be ok with that. i can see better tiller than i can make if that makes any sense.
I don't know about it being too stiff in the fades...it is a bit deceptive with the front handle overlay (there is one of those, right?), plus it depends on whether you want arc of a circle tiller or more elliptical. Just because it's a pyramid bow doesn't mean it can't be more elliptical. If it takes set near the fades it will project out to more set at the tips.
Looking forward to seeing the next set of photos!
Too stiff out of fades and outer 1/3 of limbs is too stiff..
Ditto the above but getting close
Early on the right limb developed a weak spot towards the outer 1/3rd, right at that dark section. I worked the middle to avoid a hinge. I have left the fades stiff for that same purpose. I think the static tip overlays give it a deceptive look for the outer 1/3rd. I will work the fade area some more and keep an eye on the outer 1/3rd. More photo's tonight.
Personally I wouldn't do a ton near the fades, just a little, I like to keep the near fadea rea fairly stiff personally. Mainly in the outer 1/3 of the limb I would work on.
Looking more closely at the photo's I can see that the first 5" out from the fades are not doing much of anything and the same with the outer areas. . Thanks for the input guys.
Yup:)
I thought I might see some of your fancy artwork on this one Roy but I guess since we both see it we don't need no stinkin artwork.
How is the arm feeling, that looked like it might have smarted a little.
It's getting better, but still has a ways to go. But I kin shoot a bow:)

Ouch! You using piano wire for strings now or what ol' boy?
Seriously though, you fall on a broken beer bottle or what? Main thing is that you can still shoot a bow. Get well bud.................Art B
Ya got a PM , Art.
Here is the next photo. Still needs more movement in the tips and near the fades. Though when I run a flat edge along the limb there is consistent curve. The gizmo shows fairly even bending as well, even though it looks uneven to the naked eye.

Took a short draw shot with it just to see how it felt and it felt lousy.

Luckily a bit came all the way through and I could keep pulling it out. I think I'll ice it from the inside with a cold beverage, just like Roy does, but with something better than Coors Light :)
full penetration!!nice tony!!youch!!!
how close are you to target weight??
plumb your stick to the peg board and it will be easier to see the tiller--its looking pretty nice!---hows it shoot? shot feel??thats what counts at this stage
Oh boy, bet that felt good.
Seen that happen in real time, but worse. Not something I would want to happen to me. Sorry it happened to you. I now thread wrap the front of ALL my fletching............Art
Mike, Bow is level with the pegboard. I put a level on it each time to make sure I'm consistent. I going for 45-50# and am at about 35# @ 20", so I'm close. I have been taking small amounts off each time. being off center makes it look less even than it really is. Tips are at even distance.
Not sure how the shot feels yet. I have only taken one and I got a little distracted at the result :)
Here's another look. I think a little more at fades and ends will have me looking good. I like the way it is bending evenly through both limbs.

tony
you have a shot of the limb tips straight on from the back?--my goal is to see the width of the stiff tip section-----
how much set if any is it taking?
im not sure that i'd mess with the fades much--
if any--light sanding on the top limb--its real close by my eye [and a dandy ellipse]
Mike, the bow is straight taper from 2" to a little less than 1/2" tips. Tips are fairly thick from belly to back, so I plan on thinning them out some. When I unstrung it, it had a little less than 1" set and that went to less than 1/2" after sitting for a while. I am very pleased with it so far and have it to the point of sanding and shooting in. Will see how the tiller holds up. Will post more pics tomorrow night.
It's better, but a little more bend right outside the flares is needed. Just a little.
listen to roy---you know i'm a glass guy anyhow---
that being said i'm also partial to stiff limb tips-like yours--so my thought on yours is to put an extreme trap on them to keep the stiffness but reduce tip weight--looking good!
