Title: ?'s for Texans.
Post by: ishiwannabe on February 28, 2008, 06:44:00 PM
Hey all. One of my best friends is moving there in a month or two, and Im working on him to turn trad.(he is borrowing my Chekmate) He wants me to visit once he gets all moved and settled. He will be in the Eagle Pass area.
What is there to hunt? What time of year can I hunt the largest variety of game? Im looking for general info here, as nothing is set in stone...well except him moving there.
Any Trad Gangers in that immediate area? Thanks!

That part of Texas is rich in all kinds of game, from dove, quail, turkey, WT deer, wild hog, javelina, the list seems endless, plus there are exotics there also.

In Texas, since we are about 97% privately owned, it is mainly lease hunting. The state has developed a number of public hunting areas around the state. Given a little time I would imagine that he will be able to find a place to hunt, it most likely will cost but that's the way it is. There are "day hunts" available also.

Folks on this forum will be able to help quite a bit, lots of Texans here. Best of luck.

Yep, as the Cop said above, the Eagle Pass area is home to a plethora of game, but it's one rugged place to hunt with it's very arid climate making it almost desert-like in appearance.

There's also a great deal of Indian land around there with the Kickapoo Indian reservation nearby. They also own and operate the finest, and possibly only land based casino in Texas. Just a little more to do when you can't hunt.

Amistad is very near there and has some public land to hunt.

Gary, Saying that Eagle Pass is "almost desert like" is like saying that Laurie Dhue is "almost woman like".  :p
It IS desert-but lots of game lives in the desert.

This is federally controlled pulblic hunting around Lake Amistad.  It's a good area for whitetails.  Pretty rugged deserty type country.  Also...lots of audad!!!  You should be able to find info on it through the Texas Parks and Wildlife.

Leather chaps or tall, comfortable snake boots might be a good idea.

That is arguably the best whitetail country in TX. I hunted there from 93-2003 on a 22,000 acre lease. It was amazing, trust me. Or trust these fat 'ol antler pics.....
