I'm going to be making a hickory backed hickory board bow...as soon as find the wood...lol
going to use unibond 800 glue.
What do I need to do to make it FF string safe?
..or is it a NO-NO no matter what is done?
Thanks!
John
I would put horn tip over lays on it for FF string.
or pad the loops with some b-50 and itll be fine
That's it eh?
cool!
Probably could use some phenolic or glass too then I suppose..?
...though horn would be classy
Thanks
Mammoth ivory would be cool. :bigsmyl:
I have two osage selfbows with no tip overlays and both have FF string on them. I think FF can adversely affects glass bows more than wood bows.
I shoot FF (D10) on my self/wood/vintage and "approved" bows with no issues I just pad the loops to 16/18 strands....

FF or other low-stretch strings do not present the dangers to wooden bows that they do to glass bows that don't have beefed up tips. I've been shooting D97 strings on wooden bows forever and have never seen any ill effects. you don't need to do anything to a wooden bow to make it safe for FF or any other string material.
Well, I lost count of the no. of bows I've made and I never had a nock split when bracing a bow while the bow was being built or actually ever... come to think of it. I decided to become a modern selfbowyer.
You know what I mean. I wanted to get with the 20th Century. I know it is the 21st now but you know modern stuff s good right? I wanted to use modern string materials. I knew I shouldn't but hey everyone said it was ok.
I never ever split a nock. Nope never. Never ever. I now I said that. I might as well try FF. It can't be all that bad.
That is until I tried tillering a red oak log stave using FF. Son of a gun if that nock didn't split for a good 8 inches right down into the limb right at its first bracing.
I fixed it with super glue and a nock overlay. See I am a modern bowyer. I used a modern glue.
Having said that I have used FF to tiller osage with no ill effects. Whitewoods without overlays. No thanks. :) Jawge
I've used FF on every bow I've made(,maybe 20 or so), many of them board bows.
In fact I've used FF on an sine2w backed Eastern Red Cedar with pin nocks and no tip overlays at all. The string dented the wood very slightly but no trouble at all after hundrds of shots at 60+#.
I think the on;y thing you need to do is put on a FF string.
I brought a red oak board bow to an achery shop once and asked them to make a FF string for me. Everyone sneared and refused to shoot it, but that bow shot many arrows before it's eventual end (unrelated to the string, I broke off the tiup trying to recurve it.)
Ah bs, lb. I don't believe it one bit.
haha I dont know what part you dont believe Roy but I dont blame you.
Believe this though, I had that bow recurved and I was trying to remove a slight tip misalignment and just snapped the limb tip off... g/f just laughed at me while I cried ...
