Curious,
How many of you find that your cedar arrows perform better than carbon? I've been shooting CX150's out of my Black Widow PSA for about two years and have loved the performance. Wood arrows are a mystery to me and I've wanted to keep things as simple as possible as a newcomer to traditional. A few months ago, I purchased some cedar arrows and they sat in the closet because they were "too pretty to shoot". Recently, I've gotten them out and they seem to fly better than the carbons. They are easier to see in flight, and it just feels right to shoot wood arrows. Anyone else experience superior performance from wood and is it normal? Thanks.
Have you bareshaft tuned both?
No Tripp you have psychiatric issues that need immediate treatment. Send the bow and arrows to me and we'll begin your healing. :biglaugh:
Hey whatever "Tripps" your trigger and makes you happy is all good. Confidence is key.
woodies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! are the best!!!!
just a personal preference
You're funny, Dave! But I believe you..PSA II on the way so that I can start the mind healing process.
JUST KIDDING OF COURSE! If it means I can shoot my bow when I want I'll stay psychotic. :bigsmyl:
I'm really falling in love with wood arrows, though!
Wood is Good!!! Especially from a longbow.
Off the top of my head if you find that wood arrows are shooting better for you then carbons, I'd have to say that your carbons are not tuned properly to your bow. Oh and I am a wood shooter. All things being equal the nature of wood lends itself to not being as accurate as Carbon. That doesn't mean you can't learn to drive tacks with wood arrows however.
Derek
dunno, I have never shot carbons, but do know that a good well spined woodie is as accurate as any arrow out there.. I really like shootin wood, but switch around between wood and aluminum..
my perfectly tuned wood arrows perform as well as my perfectly tuned carbon arrows :)
I would agree with robslifts, Just a personal preference. I wouldn't say one is better then the other, just different.
My "crookedest" wood arrow still flys straighter than I can shoot!!!!!
ANYONE can shoot straight with perfectly tuned arrows.....but it takes a real "instinctive" shooter to shoot straight with a bunch of crooked, mismatched wood arrows.
The carbons bare shaft a little stiff! But, I've got that corrected recently. It just seems more "natural" if that's a good way to express it, to see that big ole woodie arcing through the air. I guess I am just surprised at the performance of wood. Thanks for everyones input. Also, seems the wood is a little more quiet.
Depends on your definition of better, I suppose.
In my opinion anything other than wood is a faux arrow.
Jack
I shoot both and I also like to shoot wood more so than carbon. I just recently made some out of ash and just love to shoot them. I am afraid of breaking nocks on them, they shoot that well. To each is own, as long as you are happy with what you have. ;)
Nothing wrong with wood arrows however it take's a heap more work to make "good" arrows from wood than carbon shaft's.Shoot what ya like I like my carbons but have gone thru a few doz woods too both have their points no pun intended LOL
I agree with Bard, if the wood is perfroming better it is because the carbons are not properly tuned. I myself get perfect flight from my bows with both wood and carbon but it takes a little tuning to each. Shawn
I think you got it right when you say they just feel right! That is my experience with woodies over any other arrow material. I love shooting my alums out of my LB, but when I put a set of woodies thru it, they just feel natural, like a marriage made in heaven. Of course, I shoot the top premium wood shafts, like Alaskan Yellow Cedars, or Stika Spruce, or just some hand spine/matched cedars!
I have never shot carbon but I have no reason to doubt the claims that they are straighter, more consistant, more durable, easier tunned and out penetrate wood.
I prefer wood.
A well tuned arrow, wood, carbon, or aluminum, to me are all equally accurate from a bow with no sights. It just takes practice to achieve the best accuracy you can with each.
Right now I like wood!
I think good carbon arrows are as good as good wood arrows. I happen to feel good when I'm shooting wood, and making wood arrows; and that's what better is all about to me.
I love shooting wood, making arrows, the whole thing. But I have yet to find a wood arrow that shoots as consistantly well as a well tuned carbon. Never thought I would say that! Even so, I will continue to make and shoot wood arrows cause I love them. If I were to shoot in a scored tournament I would shoot the carbons.

X 2 SAme preference here!
im with snag.
me too. And, they're quiet.
Fro shorter draw longbows one usually has some leeway, even if there are variations in the release. With carbons that same person has to do a bit of trial and error work to get the right combinations. i don't understand why some need to leave them so long, i much prefer net for blunts and blade to the fingers for broadheads. Narrow aluminums and wood allow that much easier for me.
I began my journey "back to wood only" several years ago, self bows and wood arrows. It is a natural "progression" sounds like you have began your journey also.If your destination is archery and bowhunting in their purest form you are on the right trail!
I think wood is more forgiving. I find them easier to tune than carbon. Maybe it's just me, but I have a much harder time getting good arrow flight with carbons. Even aluminum is easier. I think part of the problem is the limited spines available with carbon compared to wood or aluminum. Wood just works better for me. Shoot what works for you.
i think vermonster nailed it on the head....the best arrow is what works best for you.... "confidence is key"
I will accept that wood can be the equal of carbon when I am allowed to shoot my carbon hunting arrows in the "Eagle Eye" shoot at Denton. Until then, I have to believe those in the know are protecting wood only because of its shooting characteristics.

They sure would be the better choice if you needed to start a little fire. :bigsmyl:
I finally tried some carbon arrows this year and have been pretty impressed, but theres just something about woodies. I love build'em!!
I've never shot carbons since going trad, but I would try them. I shoot mostly aluminum because I have a 31" draw which doesn't accomodate most POC arrows once you taper the ends. I got some of those poplar shafts that are 34" and made my first set of woodies - and they don't shoot bad (notice I didn't say they shoot well).
Shoot what you like and gives you the most confidence of an accurate shot placement and humane kill.
Wait till you make some of your own, it'll really "feel" right. Lots of fun during the long winter too.
Shoot whatever you like, arrows that is:)
I think the secret to good cedars is the supplier.
Another thing about wood, even if you break one you can use it. Put a little piece in your pocket and pull it out once in a while and smell it. This only works with certain wood. But I love the smell of cedar. Gary
I just can't see me shooting a carbon arrow off of my bare finger. Imagine is one broke. :scared:
New archery club, off shoot of the ldlbsofa, csa, cedar sniffers anonymous. I am an addicted member.
I haven't been able to find a carbon tree or shoots to make arrows out of. Do those grow regionally or are they imported?
-Brett
P.S. I did find an alluminum tree once around christmas, but it didn't look like it would yeild any decent shafts.
From my limited expierience, wood is quieter for the same arrow weight as carbon. I get good flight out of wood, but what I have had is not very durable. I have only bought cheap woodies and I think that is a mistake. Find a good supplier before you buy cheapies and get discouraged like me.
This came up on another site (LW) and I did a little test...see thread Epitaph II: pics
I shoot my cedars better the my aluminums...I dont shoot carbons yet.
I like shooting the cedars...someone raised a concern about carbon fibers that might remain in the animal if the arrow breaks. Wood will soften, carbon will just stick into the roof of your mouth or gums! Anybody else had this concern?
It really doesn't matter what kinda shaft material yer arras are made with, what counts most is can you hit yer mark consistently.
just bought some carbons today
shot aluminum most of the time
well see in a little while
That header made me wonder "What you smokin in that pipe?" :saywhat: :bigsmyl:
It's too bad Howard Hill never had the chance to take shooting lessons from you guys, he would have finally been able to hit something once and a while. Really now, I have both and when the arrow works, it works no matter what it is made out of. It is possible that some just don't know how to get cedars to work for them.
LOL good point! I just never liked how much work they take then they break so easy. :knothead:
I think i'm goina go back to ceders. I like the feel of the shot better with wood compared to carbons.
I think I'm going back to wood too. I just like the looks and feel and they shoot plenty good enough. Less monkeying around adding weight, etc.
Tripp, Haven't you learned, YET?! Carbon has no SOUL! Wood has a Spirit!
