Title: Adding a second shelf?
Post by: b.glass on February 14, 2013, 01:57:00 PM
What do you think about adding another shelf to a longbow riser, (fiberglass bow), to an exsiting bow? So it could be shot right or left handed. I realize it would nulify any warranty.

Bona, I think it would depend on how much "meat" the handle area has. It would be a shame to weaken it at the handle. Lots of stress there anyway.

Sounds risky. How about a picture of the test subject.

I don't have the bow, yet. It is a Howard Hill lefty. The owner jokingly said it could be made into a righty but it got me thinking.

I've seen a HH that had a right and left shelf. The owner suggests calling the bowyer at the HH shop to ask his opinion. I plan to do that tomorrow.

I talked to Mr. Ekin and he said the shelves on the double shelved bows are cut more shallow than on a single shelf bow. Makes sense. I asked about shooting it like a self bow or making a very shallow shelf and he thought that would work.

You could cut in a shallow shelf and add a leather or wood addition on to it.

That sounds good too Pat. I'll let you all know how it turns out.
