Title: leather working ??
Post by: imskippy on February 27, 2008, 08:32:00 AM
I'd like to try my hand at building a few leather quivers. Back and/or hip style. I found some plans but had a question about type of leather and weight. If I got a lighter leather like 5-6 oz is there a way to stiffen the leather to hold the shape like a back quiver? Or is there something like a cardboard or plastic liner I could use? Also if I buy a colored leather can it still be dyed more. (I found some cheap hides but they are light blue and 5-6 oz.)
I'm sure I'll think of more but thats it for now.

I think 5-6 oz leather is a good choice for a back quiver.  It is stiff but will still comform to your back.  Any heavier and the arrow would just rattle around so you might as well put a strap on a PVC tube.  The only leather you can really stain is veg tanned.  Most likely a leather that is blue was chrome tanned and thats the color it is always going to be. You might be able to darken the blue -dunno-.
