Title: Any Up & coming Bowyers?...
Post by: NDTerminator on February 25, 2008, 10:36:00 PM
When we start discussing bows here, the same group of established makes of bows/bowyers tend to come up (and with good reason, I might add...).

I'm curious if anyone knows any up & coming new bowyers whose work has yet to be widely recognized in the Trad world?  There has to be a at least a few out there.

Pics of their bows would be nice too...

I have a Sapphire Hawk 3p longbow made by Ernie McKenzie and I love it.
 www.sapphirearchery.com/ (http://www.sapphirearchery.com/)
He's building me another set of limbs for it right now and I can't wait to get them. I've shot and owned a bunch of more expensive bows and this thing shoots really well for me. It chrono'd as fast as my Black Swan hybrid, is dead in the hand and looks great.

Hey guys...I hope this question fits here.  Maybe one of the above mentioned bowyers will respond:

Recently, I was given a red oak stave by a good buddy of mine.  I'm looking for some direction on a good bowyer who could make me a 55# pound selfbow.  There is some significance about this bow that I'll get into later.  So, do the fellas up top make selfbows?  If so, does anyone have pics or feedback they could pass on to me?  Thanks for the help.....CJ

LBR,
I think Eric Krewson, John Scifres, and Ted Fry will make custom selfbows, and they are all excellent selfbow bowyers.  There are a few glass bowyers that can and will make selfbows, like Ed Scott at Owl Bows, but they are few and far between.  There is very little money to be made making selfbows when compared to glass bows so expect to pay a premium if you want a good bow.  Also, the condition of your stave will play a major factor in determining the final product.

Jon,
Run a search on Randy Morin here at Tradgang, he is making some really nice glass bows, but usually only posts pictures of them when he kills something.

Ed Mikuta in Rome, New York

Ed builds Top Quality R/D longbows with a Big East style locator grip. My family and I all shoot Ed's longbows.

Sorry I don't have any pictures, but my good friend Joe Skipp is a dealer for Ed's bows, maybe he could post some pictures for me.....   :notworthy:

Going with Walt here. I know it sounds like all us Montanans stick together, but Randy Morin does a really nice bow. I shot one through the course at the Traditional Bowhunters of Montana get together up Moose Creek last year, and was very impressed. Well thought out design, great mechanics, and workmanship was awesome. That's my two centavos.

Timberhawk Bows.

I don't think many people know about them, but they are excellent bows! Not super fancy, but I don't know of another bow I like as much in terms of shootability and comfortable grip.

I gotta second the Timberhawk Bows. Scott makes a very nice looking/shooting recurve with the most "shootable" grip I have tried. Haven't shot one of his longbows yet, but they look good too! Mike

John Holzrichter in Wichita, Ks. He makes a really nice T/D recurve and 1pc longbow. He even made me a T/D longbow that I loved but my oldest son seemed to like it even more so it found a new home. Not to mention the awnry old fart shoots pretty darn good too.He built both of these bows for my youngest son Noah!

I'll give a shout out for Randy Morin as well. Saw one of his bows on Tuesday. Good design and very well made. I wanted to shoot it real bad but it was a lefty unfortunately.

Seven Lakes has a dedicated following although I don't think Mike finishes many bows these days.  I have two of their Blanks and no matter how many I build myself I'll always have my "Long Night".
